Christmas comes early for local boyA LOCAL family are cele-brating an early Christmas present after a young boy emerged unscathed follow-ing a freak festive accident.

The boy was out shopping with family members when he fell from an escalator in the Penneys shop in the Marshes.

Shocked onlookers feared the boy had been seriously hurt in the fall, but fortu-nately he was uninjured, al-though somewhat shaken, by the incident.

It is understood the boy was climbing on the outer-side of the escalators leading to the first floor when he fell. Staff, shoppers and family reacted quickly in coming to his aid.

Emergency services at-

tended the scene and the boy was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital but he did not suffer any serious injury.

One shopper who was in Penneys at the time of the accident described what she saw. “I was just after coming from the till when I heard screaming and people run-ning to the balcony.

“Somebody said that a child had fallen down and we could hear screams from downstairs. There was a woman crying and every-body was in shock. We were all just hoping that every-thing would be ok.

“We didn’t want to go over to see exactly what happened so we just left the shop at that stage”, she added.

Santa is used to travelling around the world in style on his reindeer driven sleigh but last week 120 Santa’s took to the streets of Dundalk to take part in the 2012 fun run.The Dundalk Chamber of Commerce who organised the event said they were de-lighted with how the day went and praised the people of Dundalk for pulling to-gether to help local charities.“On behalf of the organising committee of Dundalk Charity Lunch and Santa Fun Run we would like to thank everyone who assisted in making both events a phe-nomenal success. Over 100 Santas took part in the fun run and over 200 where booked into the lunch.“The events raised in excess of €18,000 including in-kind toys. Each of the nomi-nated charities received a cheque on the day for €2,500 and the toys where distrib-uted to St Brigid’s School and other local charities. Additionally a local child, Travis Foley received a trip to Euro Disney worth €2000”, said organiser, Michael Farrell

DkIT students have given the college the green light to expand their facilities and purchase the JJB Sports Complex.

Last week students were asked to vote on approving the purchase as college authorities will impose a €125 additional fee starting next year. More than 1127 people voted, 66% of whom supported the college’s expansion.

The Students Union remained impartial during the campaign according to President David Brannigan.

“We provided information for both sides and let people make up their own minds. We just wanted to make sure they were informed when they

were going to vote”, he said.

Mr Brannigan thinks that the purchase is a good move for the college and that it represents good value for students. The students will have full gym membership including a swimming pool, steam rooms, hot tubs, 450 free parking spaces as well as a free shuttle bus between the campus and complex.

However as basic fees are due to increase by a further €250 in September not all DkIT students are happy with the additional €125 charge.

“We know one in three students are not happy with it but in this case the majority rules.” The SU president said that they will look at solutions where students legitimately

cannot afford to pay the additional cost. We will continue to represent those students in the same way we always have,” he said.

President of the college Denis Cummins welcomed the news saying that the college now has among the best facilities in the country and hopes that the purchase will be completed early next year.

“As well as catering for the needs of our clubs and societies we can now develop a whole new range of sports related programmes such as sports science, sports psychology and sports administration. The reopening of the JJB centre will not only benefit DkIT but the entire north east region,” he said.

A PIECE of Olympic and Women’s history has made its home in Co Louth as memorabilia from Beatrice Hill-Lowe’s appearance at the 1908 Games has been acquired by the county Museum.

Lowe was a native of Louth and Ireland’s first female Olympian. Her bronze medal for archery from the 1908 Olympic Games is a part of the ‘Patriot Games: Ireland and the Olympic 1896 -2010’ collection. The collection is being

housed in Louth County Museum only until renovations in the Ardee castle are complete.

More than 100 years ago Ireland was a constituent part of the UK and Hill-Lowe

competed as an archer as part of the team for Great Britain. It was the only sport at the time that was open to women as they had to be fully covered while competing.

A 49-yeAr-Old music teacher faces a huge inconvenience in terms of his employment prospects after being disqualified from driving for three years.

Paul McCreevy of 16 Castle Heights, Castlebellingham, was

banned at dundalk district Court after pleading guilty to a drink driving charge.

The court heard that the loss of licence will be a huge inconvenience for the traditional musician as he travels to people’s houses to

teach music. The defendant had been stopped by Gardai on August 23 this year at Castletown road, dundalk. He had been veering over the road and clipped a kerb before being stopped by Gardai. He stated that he had musical

instruments in the car and didn’t think it would be safe to leave it parked in town.

Judge Flann Brennan also imposed a €400 fine and deferred the disqualification until May 1, 2013. Other matters were struck out.

‘The Gooch’ is special guest for St Vincent’s Trade FairWEDNESDAY December 12 saw the culmination of months of hard work for the TY students in St. Vincent’s Secondary School with the annual Christmas Trade Fair. The TY students involved worked so hard with their business teachers Linda McCusker and Cora McBride in setting up their companies from idea generation and development early in September to market research to see if their ideas would sell and then into production in the hope of making a profit at the trade fair.

Fifteen stands were in place at the trade fair with various companies selling a range of cards, cupcakes, baked goods and sweets perfect for the Christmas market. Not to be forgotten were ‘2 Catriona’ who asked to have a stand in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation where they sold various baked goods and raffle tickets for some lovely prizes. They raised a fantastic amount of money for the charity so well done to them.

The highlight of the day had to be the arrival of Colm “The Gooch” Cooper who officially opened the schools AIB Build a Bank Challenge. He made a lovely speech wishing the girls well with their challenge

of opening and running the school bank called “Rags to Riches Bank” for the year to encourage our students to save even a small amount each week.

The girls involved in the Build a Bank Challenge include Aoife Malone, Katie Laverty Bent, Meabh Sloane, Claire Cooney, Annabelle Morris and Meabh O Hanrahan.

With the help of Sheila Breen the local student officer from AIB Dundalk and

their teacher Linda McCusker the girls open the bank on a weekly basis and try to encourage the students to open accounts and save on a regular basis.

Colm stayed in the school for over two and a half hours meeting students, getting photos taken and signing autographs for all the girls and meeting the very successful Gaelic team, illustrating just why he is such an inspiration to all the young players in the country.

LOCAL students braved the icy conditions to take part in annual 5K Santa Dash to raise funds for the Make a Wish Foundation.

St Louis Transition Year students embraced the cold day that was Sunday December 9 and decked themselves head to toe in Santa cos-tumes to run in the an-nual 5K Santa Dash in Dublin. The race was to

raise funds for Make a Wish Foundation, a foundation that aims to grant the wishes of chil-dren with life-threaten-ing illnesses.

Training for the 5K was the first project of the Transition Year PE programme. The train-ing programme lasted eight weeks which in-volved running three times a week, and to reach being able to run a 5K a lot of dedication was required.

“I was apprehensive about bringing up the idea of the 5K training programme, I wasn’t sure how they would all take to it. But I was pleasantly surprised,” explained PE teacher Kate O’Byrne. “I couldn’t get over the commitment and dedi-cation of the group each week.”

After the training was finished the group want-ed to run in a 5K race and picked the Santa

Dash as the race they wanted to compete in.

“The Santa Dash was for such a great cause and we knew it wouldn’t be really competitive as it is a family event, plus we thought it would be cool to race dressed as Santa” said TY student Emily Reilly.

Over 1000 participat-ed in the race in Dublin all dressed as Santa Claus and all St Louis students finished the race in great time.

THE Dundalk Lions Club have launched a new helpline card to try and tackle the ongoing problems with regard to bullying amongst young people.

The problem of bullying and suicide amongst children was outlined recently in an NUI study which showed that 17% of all children had been victims of bullying.

The study among Irish second-level students aged 12 to 18 found cyber-bullying usually goes on for one to two weeks, but can last for several years.

It also claimed that up to 25% of those who are bullied did not confide in anyone.

Tadhg O’Sullivan from the Dundalk Lions Club said he

hoped the cards would be of use to schoolchildren while urging those who are affected by bullying to speak about their problems rather than bottling it up.

“In producing and sponsoring the card we were conscious of the increasing level of suicides involving young people and the increased levels of bullying/cyber bullying.

“The card contains helpline numbers for among other services drug counselling/suicide and bullying/cyber bullying and for people with depression and parents under stress.” explained Tadhg.

Anyone wishing to obtain copies of the card should apply on the Lions Club website at www.dundalklionsclub.ie.

THE Christmas period around Blackrock would not be com-plete without a Conor Hughes fundraiser to entertain the masses on Blackrock beach and this St Stephen’s Day sees that trend continue with the theme of the fundraiser being the humble ’bee’.

This 26th of December in Blackrock will see the launch of a new self-help initiative for pov-erty stricken West Africian com-munities.

For every €65 raised, Cross-

cause can place a bee hive with a rural family. When the honey bees have produced, the honey it is then sold for the benefit of the family In keeping with the project, St Stephen’s day will be all about Bees.

The highlight will be an all day variety concert featuring such artists as BEE-oynce, The BEE-eatles and of course Sting.

Speaking ahead of the fund-raiser Crosscause founder Conor Hughes called for everybody in the area to come out and support the fundraiser.

“Everybody is invited to come

along and enjoy the show, espe-cially if they dress as a bee” he explained

“All singers, dancers, and co-medians are welcome to come and perform, with these great in-ternational stars! The idea of the fundraiser is of course to raise money for these West African communities but as always we’ll be having lots of fun whilst doing so” added Conor.

The action starts at 12 midday and continues until everybody buzzes off.

Give Conor a buzz on 087-9674829 for any inquiries.

NO MORE READING GLASSES

For a free consultation call 08000 121 565www.optilase.co.uk - Belfast - L/Derry - Newry

Did you know, you no longer need to be dependent on reading glasses, thanks to a pioneering new surgery called KAMRA Vision. At Optilase, we are proud to be the only clinic in Northern Ireland and the UK, to offer this new, life-changing surgery.

Maybe you’re holding this article at arm’s length trying to focus? Everyday tasks from reading the paper or a text, checking a price tag or food menu are equally tricky, with-out the use of bothersome reading glasses.

The fact is, as we get older, we lose our near vision. The technical term is “presbyopia”. It’s simply part of the age-ing process and happens to everyone, even those who have previously had laser vision correction or enjoyed perfect vision all of their lives.

Traditionally, most people with presbyopia use reading glasses to improve their near vision but with reading glass-es come numerous vision and lifestyle constraints. This is the unique benefit of this revolutionary new treatment. With KAMRA Vision comes freedom and convenience. The restoration of near vision means no more dependency on reading glasses.

Brian Loughlin, from L/Derry had the Kamra treatment at Optilase, Belfast in July of this year and commented:

“I had the Kamra treatment at Optilase in July and it has absolutely changed my life. I used to need reading glasses to see anything up close, my mobile, computer, the news-

paper. As soon as I heard that I could get rid of my read-ing glasses I went for an assessment at Optilase, L/Derry. Thankfully, I was an ideal candidate and I booked my treatment for the very next week. The treatment itself was absolutely painless and took less than 30 seconds per eye. Immediately afterwards, my reading vision was fantastic! I no longer have to wear any sort of glasses. It really has changed not only my working life but the quality of my life altogether”. So how does it work? What’s called a “KAMRA inlay” is used, an exceptionally small ring, just 3.8mm in diameter and weighing less than a grain of salt. The inlay has an opening in the centre and is placed under the surface of the cornea over the centre of the pupil. It corrects presbyopia by narrowing the opening that permits light rays to enter the eye. The inlay reposi-tions the focal point back onto the surface of the retina to achieve crisp, sharp vision. Expect to return to your usual routines the very next day! The result is picture perfect vision, without the need for cumbersome reading glasses!

To find out if you are a suitable candidate, why not contact Optilase on 08000 121 565 or visit www.optilase.co.uk

Comedian takes to the ice

DUNDALK’S brand new skating Rink had an un-expected high profile visitor over the weekend when Channel 4’s ‘8 out of 10 cats’ star Sean Lock took to the ice with his daughter on Sunday afternoon.

The star of the popular comedy panel game show was preparing to travel from Dublin to Belfast for a gig when he found out that Dundalk had recently become home to an outdoor ice skating rink.

As Adrian Conlon from the Brew Crew Café company explains the funny man lists ice skating as one of his favourite pastimes and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to put his skates on.

“We were working at the Square all weekend be-side the ice rink selling coffee when we saw Sean Lock arrive with his daughter” explained Adrian.

“He came over and had a coffee with us and we just had the craic with him for a few minutes. He told us he had heard Dundalk had a new ice rink and as he was going to Belfast decided to stop in town for an hour to skate with his daughter”

“He told us he had been a fan of ice skating for many years and he stayed for an hour and skated away with his daughter before heading off to Bel-fast. It was a bit weird to think that he was skating in Dundalk but it was great to meet him and say hello” added Adrian.

The first Junior Chef Challenge was won by Ultan Larney and Glenn McCourt

STUDENTS from throughout the region are lining up to take part in the annual Junior Chef Challenge. Prepa-rations are currently un-derway in all local sec-ondary schools for this much anticipated event which will take place on Thursday January 10 in DkIT.

The competition which is being spon-sored by Tony Kieran Butchers and judged by celebrity TV Chef Jenny Bristow, is in its second year. Last year’s Junior Chef Challenge was won by Ultan Larney and Glenn McCourt who represented St. Mary’s College, Dundalk.

As overall winners they lifted the Tony Ki-eran Junior Chef Per-petual Cup and won

€1,000 for their school in prize money. In all sixteen Junior Chefs representing eight local schools took part in the competition.

The whole thinking behind the Junior Chef Challenge is to encour-

age young people to cook and eat healthy for their family and friends at home, with an aware-ness of budget con-straints.

The theme the stu-dents have been given this year is to cook a

“Local Produce Family Celebration Meal” and Jenny Bristow will be awarding the Junior Chefs marks for origi-nality, presentation, use of local seasonal pro-duce and their interpre-tation of the brief.

TWO men who attempt-ed to take copper and wiring from a ghost es-tate faced charges of bur-

glary and criminal dam-age at Dundalk Circuit Court.

One of the defendants,

who is training to be a drugs counsellor, was warned by Judge Flann Brennan, to advise his clients not to do what he had done.

Jonathan Reid of 14 Cresent 1, Muir-hevnamor, Dundalk, and Thomas Stokes of 1 Road 2, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to the offence on January 19, 2012.

On that date, Gardai were called the Carlinn Hall estate by a security guard and when the en-tered one of the houses they saw black bags con-taining copper and wir-ing, and found the two defendants upstairs.

Solicitor James MacGuill stated that Mr Stokes, who had been drinking on the night, in-correctly thought there would be no harm in tak-ing items from an aban-doned property in a ghost estate.

The 27-year-old had not been in trouble since 2006 when he returned

to full time education and is currently training to provide guidance as a drugs counsellor, was concerned that a convic-tion would undo the good work he has done.

A sum of €400 in compensation was hand-ed to the court and in light of this, Judge Flann Brennan found the facts proven and dismissed the case.

“When advising peo-ple in relation to matters, you should advise them not to do what you have done”, added Judge Brennan.

Solicitor, Peter Lavery stated that Mr Reid was also drinking on the night and couldn’t ex-plain why he had become involved in the incident.

He had hoped to have his €400 share of com-pensation in court didn’t have it just as yet.

Judge Brennan ad-journed the case until December 20 to allow him address compensa-tion.

pany are now investigating. A spokesperson for the company said, “In line with company policy, Penneys does not comment on specific incidents.

“The safety of customers in our stores is always of paramount concern to us and an investigation is now underway regarding this incident.”

Spat at security guard when refused entry to nightclubA MAN who was refused entry to a nightclub became so upset that he

ended up spitting at a security guard.

Robert Conway of 249

Cedarwood Park, Cox’s Demesne, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to the

offence on November 23, 2010, when he appeared at the local District Court.

It was stated in evidence that Gardai were called to a nightclub in Park St and they found a man in a very agitated state and very drunk. A security guard informed them that he has been spat at. This was confirmed by CCTV images which also showed the employee being pushed.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that the defendant had been out with his girlfriend on the night in question when they were refused entry to the nightclub. There had been an amicable exchange before Mr Conway became increasingly upset.

He added that his client was now in part-time employment and doesn’t drink as much. He apologised for his actions.

The defendant also

faced two public order charges from an incident on July 29, 2011, when he was spotted fighting with another man at 3am. He was very drunk and arrested by Gardai.

Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case until December 19 to allow €400 to be paid to the Court Poor Box.

THE reform of Louth County Hospital contin-ues this month with the

announcement of a new modle of care for older people. The new modle is designed to help particu-larly frail older patients

get access to care. The programme which

will begin to be imple-mented in both Louth County and Our Lady of

Geriatric services for hospital Lourdes Hospitals early next year will see special-ity ‘geriatric teams’ and dedicated wards.

“This way of deliver-ing geriatric services in the acute hospital will mean the older person is more likely to go home and less likely to have an extended hospital stay. This initiative will not just improve the quality and outcome for the older person, it is also cost ef-fective and designed to ensure the needs of the older person are assessed when they are admitted to hospital and their care de-livered in a coordinated and focused manner,” said Dr Diarmuid O’Shea, Clinical Lead for the Na-tional Clinical Pro-gramme for Older Peo-ple.

The care was devel-oped through consultation with patients, HSE serv-ices for older people and care staff including doc-tors and nurses.

Peter Fitzpatrick wel-comed the announcement stating that it would “greatly improve the quality of care for older people and shorten their length of stay in hospital.

“This is a positive step forward in the overhaul of the Irish healthcare serv-ice.”

THe Minutes will make a very welcome return this festive season when they headline New Day Rising Christmas Bash in O Connells, Quay St this Saturday night. It’s been a massive year for the trio as the bands reputation gets bigger and bigger. So far in 2012 they have played support slots to the likes of Foo Fighters, Stone Roses and Noel Gallagher. Just this week the band toured the UK with indie giants The Hives. Gav from New Day Rising says its we’ll over a year since we last had them

in town and we are delighted that they agreed to play this years party. In rock and roll terms in just doesn’t get any better. It shaping up to be a fantastic night as some of the town’s best bands have also been added to the bill. Third Smoke will be the main support on the night, while the town’s top punk band The Gakk have also been added to the line. ONOFF will kick off this stellar night and the boys are well up for it. Doors open 8.30 with the first band on stage at 9pm. Admission €12.

Over the last four years Marshes have hosted the Toy appeal with their Santa sleigh be-ing the focal point for shoppers to deposit new toys and tinned foodstuffs so that needy families could have a wonderful Christmas with goods distributed by the round Table. Traditionally hampers are made up of food items left in the sleigh and supported by a selection of new un-wrapped toys for all age ranges.harry Traynor, General

Ardee Concert BandA total of 145 musi-cians, all members of Ardee Concert Band, performed to a packed house in their 31st Annual Christmas Concert. For many Ardonians the Annual Christmas Concert marks the start of their Christmas festivi-ties. There were four different ensembles performing. The band will perform at the Ardee Par-ish Carol Service on Sunday 23rd at 7pm and 12.30pm Mass on Christmas Day. They will also be perform-ing carols on the street and in Moorehall Lodge on Christmas eve. “The band mem-bers would like to wish all the members their families, all band sup-porters a very happy Christmas and 2013” said Fiona Reilly PRO.

MArSheS Shopping Centre have appealed

again for kind hearted shoppers to support

this year’s Toy and Food appeal for 2012.

Toys on Table Appeal 2012Manager of Marshes said he was once again delighted to offer sup-port to local needy causes and thanked the public for their kindness and encour-aging support year af-ter year. he asked that the pub-lic buy one additional present or a tinned food item, however small, when shopping and leave in Santa’s

sleigh for distribution over the next week, everything large or small helps somebody in need. Goods are usually de-livered by Dundalk round Table who have provided kindness and support to many in past years and he was hopeful they would do so again. The appeal will run to Christmas eve.

Cycling club reflect on impressive year

Students from Dun Dealgan N.S. at the dress rehearsal for their Christmas Service which took place on Sunday morning

Recently crowned Irish Cycling Club of the Year, Cuchulainn Cycling Club celebrated their 2012 successes at their annual awards ceremony. The biggest competitive award on the night was the winner of the club’s flagship event, The FPM Accountants Summer Cy-cling League. The event sees the cyclists do battle over 21 rounds, compris-ing a mix of flat and hilly road races, time trials and finishing off with a hill climb. Consist-ency is what is required to win this league and this is exactly how Raymond O`Shaughnessey claimed the title. Celeine McPhilips was the win-ner of the ladies league. Here it was in the time trials were she picked up the most points and held off Lisa Neary for the win, with Annette Dawe in third. Annette did earn herself a Louth Jersey by winning the Hill Climb Championships in late August. Her Louth title was the second in the Dawe household this year, with her sister Breda winning the ladies Louth Road

Race Championships. The Mountain Bikers off road league also an epic battle be-tween newcomer to the trails Gary Morton and the more ex-perienced Ed Lennox. The other big club event, from the tail end of 2011, was the Carrick Cycles Christmas Time Trial won by Gerry McCabe. Eve McCrystal showed glimps-es of what was to come by win-ning the ladies event. The most improved Female Cyclist of the Year was Lisa Neary, who claimed the run-ner’s up spot in the Ladies Cy-cling League.

Lisa Neary receives Most Im-proved Ladies Award from Kevin Dolan

St Josephs hope to reach top of the chartsPUPILS from St Josephs NS, Dndalk, are hoping to push for a place at the top of the Christmas charts with their festive offering entitled, ‘Another Christmas Morn’.

The song was originally written for the school choir 21 years ago by Liam Reilly of Bagatelle fame before being re-released this year.

It certainly has caught the imagination with over 4,000 hits on YouTube in just over ten days and is available on iTunes, Amazon US and HMV shops.

All proceeds go to the Simon Community and despite the competition from other Christmas releases in aid of good causes, the school is hoping to get to the top slot for Christmas.

One interesting fact is that Elizabeth Cleary, who sang the solo lines on the original song, is now a teacher in the school. She sings the solo lines in the contemporary version, while her son, Oisin, is in the St Josephs School Choir, under teacher Muirbe Lawlor.

Christmas Morning runONE of the longest running sporting charity events in the country will continue this year when Dowdallshill GF & AC organise the annual Christmas Morning Run to St Oliver’s Hospital.

The event was first organised in 1959 when athletes and footballers from the Dundalk club ran from their clubrooms, then on the Racecourse Road, to deliver presents to patients at Blessed Oliver’s on the Ardee Rd. Every year since then club members have made the trip that is one of highlights of the year for the hospital as the club also provides music and entertainment.

The club now visits St Oliver’s at the Louth Hosptital and over the years, money collected has been presented to the hospital to purchase much-needed equipment such as PA sound systems, wheelchairs, walking aids, televisions and a full size crib with figures.

Those wishing to support the event can contact any Dowdallshill committee member.

Agnieszka Boniewicz

Bay estate School and St Oliver’s, a visit they make every three weeks throughout the school year.Scoil Mhuire school principal Martina rafferty, said the visits were of ‘great therapeutic value to the kids and helped them to understand and ap-preciate older people of the town.Kay O’Keefe who is director of nursing in St Oliv-er’s echoed those sentiments whilst also acknowl-edging the importance of the project saying it had ‘contributed greatly to the quality of life of the residents’ as it was something’ they thoroughly looked forward to throughout the year’.
