THE “GREY BRIGADE” – Getting things done in Orange

By DEREK MAITLAND

We’ve all read about the crisis that’s awaiting our society when our ranks of old aged people swell to costly levels in the coming years.

The latest warning has come from the Business Council of Australia, which by its own estimates, claims that health and aged care spending will land us with vast $70 billion national deficits by the year 2050 unless the federal government brings in major cost-cutting reforms.

One reform it’s particularly interested in is deregulation of aged care, which it says would provide “greater choice” and also make more ageing Australians fork out their own money for health care and welfare.

Not a mention in the scheme, of course, of the contribution that ageing Australians are actually likely to make in the future, with a lot of the retiring Baby Boomers in particular demanding the right to continue working, with the independence it ensures, well into their final years.

The idea that our ageing citizens can contribute valuable work and unique experience, therefore being a boon to instead of a blight on our economy in the future, is one that’s captured the imagination of Central West Photo News managing director, Bob Holland.

He sees the legions of post-retirement people forming a “Grey Brigade” of volunteer workers who’ll be able to bring their skills and experience to community maintenance and protection – dealing with tasks like litter disposal, park and public gardens cleaning and beautification, civic restoration jobs, even a revival of the old Neighbourhood Watch concept – which would be of tremendous social benefit.

Bob has already floated the idea to Orange City Council as a way of “getting things done” here, and is now ready to call a meeting of councillors and community leaders to look at ways of getting the Grey Brigade up and marching.

As he says in a full-length video interview on the subject on ONN (Orange News Now) -- our online multimedia news feature service: “everyone knows that these people have got great talent, great experience, and it can be used for good.”

“And I think that the more opportunities we can create to tap into that experience and enthusiasm, the richer our community will be.

“I see the Grey Brigade as a seniors’ club, a volunteer’s club that with council support can fill a particular gap in our community, and have fun doing it, and save us a lot of money.”

You can hear more about Bob Holland’s Grey Brigade concept on ONN at www.orangenewsnow.com.au

“Everyone knows that these people have got great talent, great experience,

and it can be used for good.”

FROM THE EDITORWITH BOB HOLLAND

Hi friendsI’m not sure about everyone else, but at this time of year I tend to struggle through what is traditionally a dead time in our business. Not a lot happens for us between Christmas and when school goes back as many people take the oppor-tunity to grab a breather before the day to day routine kicks back in again around February. Still, although the easier time is good, when you’re in small business like ours you can’t become too complacent so it’s onward and upward as they say.

You’ll probably notice that this week’s Photo News is very small compared to recent editions in fact it’s the smallest issue we’ve produced for several years. Despite this there’s still plenty to keep everyone entertained. We’ll continue with our Special Holiday Editions through January and pick up the pace again from the start of February when many of our regular features will return.

It’s worth reminding you again that we’re always happy to receive contributions from our readers. By contributions I mean just about anything that other readers might like to see or hear about. If you’re in any doubt about whether or not we’d be interested, call Rachael, our lovely Director of First Impressions on 6361 3575 and ask. There’s not too much that we say no to. Also, don’t forget how easy it is to arrange for a Photo News photographer to come along to your celebration or event to take photos to share in Photo News. Again, call Rachael on 6361 3575 and she’ll make all the arrangements.

We’d also welcome nominations for you or your friends to appear in any of our regular features like Page 3 Girl, Men @ Work, 60 Seconds, That’s My Team and Mag Wheels etc. Go on and pick up the phone!

Until next week, happy reading! [email protected]

Odour seeking

technologyBy BOB HOLLAND

Anyone who has been reading my columns over the years will be well aware that I am essentially a marketing consultant and as such I have a fascination with some of the outlandish claims that are made in advertising.

For example, the way the word technology is now used to describe a products attributes is, in some cases, laughable. My all time favourite was Mortein’s claim that one of their insect sprays had insect seeking technology. The notion that an insect spray, when sprayed from a can, would go chasing insects is absurd and I can’t for the life of me understand how any regulatory body could accept such a claim as credible.

There has been a string of so called “technology” claims and I always have a chuckle whenever I hear the term used in an ad, but just when I thought this phase had passed they’ve come up with another one that again makes me scratch my head.

Would you believe that there’s now an air freshener being advertised that has ‘odour seeking technology’? The mind boggles again.

Think about it, if it was true.

you would no longer have to keep a can of air freshener on the shelf or floor in the loo. Cleaning would be easier because when you dusted or mopped the toilet, you wouldn’t have to dust or mop around another can nor would an ugly can be spoiling the decor or look of your loo. you could simply keep the can where you keep other cleaning materials and then when an odour needs attention you just pull it out of the cupboard, give a spray or two without moving and then you can rest in the knowledge that the spray will go here, there and everywhere until it seeks out the rogue odour and deals with it. How simple is that?

For those who are laughing about now, I challenge you...who’s the biggest fool - me or the advertiser? If this product really has odour seeking technology, is this not a reasonable assessment of what the manufacturer seems to be implying?

Anyway... enough of this silly rot. If you believe the advertising, buy the product, but I strongly suggest that you don’t assume the spray will go from here to any specific there where a sneaky odour may be lurking.

Hope I’ve given you a laugh!

Who’s the biggest fool - me or the advertiser?

This week’s Page 3 Girl is Alanna Scott. When she was young she wanted to be a hairdresser and likes to watch kids shows.

playing for the orange ex-services junior hockey team.

Jade said that she would not be where she is today, without the financial support of the club.

“The tournaments I attended, particularly the under 15’s and under 17’s tournaments, is where I was recognised by the Australian selectors,” she said. “I simply would not have been able to attend these tournaments without the financial support of the orange ex-services’ club.”

Mr single said that it is an absolute pleasure to support Jade in her sporting career.

“Jade is an amazing athlete with such talent and we wish Jade and the Hockeyroos team all the best for the 2012 olympics,” he said.

Jade jo ined the Hockeyroos squad in 2011 and her sporting achievements are a credit to her.

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED

Orange’s “old barracks” – now a hive of

Colour City creativityBy DEREK MAITLAND

If you live in Orange you’ve probably driven past it hundreds of times – a stolid red-brick and tiled building with several wings which sits between the railway lines at the sweeping flyover on southern Peisley Street.

The complex is actually known as the Old barracks, which was used to accommodate railway staff and workers back in the days when rail haulage and travel was in its heyday.

Though it still belongs to NSW Rail, it’s been empty and abandoned for years, with estate agents unable to rent it out.

But prominent local artist Aida Pottinger just recently leased it for a “community rent” and she and fellow

painter Joy Engelman have turned it into an artists’ cooperative called Colour City Creatives where members can paint and inspire each other in peaceful cloister-like studios -- and not just paint, but market and sell their works.

With its crisp white interior decor, loads of windows, polished banisters and rooms all over the place, the two-story building, now known as the Barrack Gallery and reached by walking or driving over the railway track, is where Colour City Creatives are staging their celebratory first public exhibition with champagne and live music on friday, January 27 at 6pm.

It’s only a one-night event, and there’s a reason for that – the “Creatives” want the place to be a

quiet, inspirational refuge for its members and so, instead of regular crowd-pulling exhibitions, art enthusiasts and buyers will have to make private appointments to view the various works.

for any artists, it’s an exciting concept and, as Aida and Joy make clear in a full video interview with ONN – on our multimedia online news website, Orange News Now -- it’ll make up in some ways for the chronic lack of a commercial art gallery in Orange.

You can watch and hear the full story on ONN at www.orangenewsnow.com.au

Toll news! if you plan on visiting the big smoke soon, you may want to get up to scratch on the toll situation!

From 30 January 2012 all tolls, except M5, are cashless. This means you will be advised to make prior arrangements to pay tolls. One way you can do this is with the new eMU Pass.

The eMU (electronic motorway user) pass is a temporary casual travel pass which enables motorists to pay for tolls across Sydney’s eight toll roads. it can be used for up to 30 days, and will be available from participating NSW petrol stations and convenience stores.

Once you’ve got your eMU pass, call 13 18 65 to activate the card with your credit or debit card, licence plate number, travel dates, your name, and the state where your vehicle is registered. Then you’re good to go!

The Thumbs

Thumbs down to the condition of the dirt road at Lower Lewis Ponds on the way to Ophir.

Thumbs down to the two older women who chose to walk across the road in front of traffic when there is a perfectly serviceable zebra crossing a few metres away.

Thumbs up to the local fire brigade personnel who attended a call out to a property on Christmas Eve.

Calare Rotary Raffle

Good onya Clem!

On Saturday, December 17th the Calare Rotary held a toy raffle in the Orange Central Plaza to support the Dragons Abreast. Andrew Gee was there to help choose the lucky winner. Pictured are Warren Artery, Kay Rutherford, Yvonne Artery and Phil Lambert.

On the 25th of November the United Services Union Central West Branch had their annual general meeting and dinner which was held at the Robin Hood Hotel. This year they had special guests, Clem McFawn and his wife Betty who were invited along to enjoy the fine food and service. Also on the agenda for the night was the presentation of a Certificate of Merit to Clem for his 50 years of service, “what” I hear you say, yes! 50 years of service to the Orange City Council and its Community. Clem has been working hard and trucking for Orange City Council for the whole time before retiring earlier this year. Available for this special occasion was the General Secretary of the United Services Union Graeme Kelly who presented the Certificate of Merit to Clem. The USU who have a proud history of supporting people like Clem who work in Local Government and regional communities for over 100 years were honoured to have him as a guest. Well Done Clem! the entertainers

A multi-instrumentAlist, Ash’s debut acoustic solo performance was at a 2005 4loor.

“i was so nervous that night. staring down the barrel of the microphone alone was so daunting,” Ash admitted.

Her passion for music began with the violin.

“it was when i was eight. my tutor banned me from the instrument for life. i think the neighbours were thankful,” she joked.

After embracing jazz, which Ash described as “more suited to my abilities”, the grunge phase hit.

introduce the guitar and using university down time for penning her own music instead of essays.

“song writing began as a form communication with friends. i would write and record songs because i couldn’t afford phone credit to actually talk to them,” Ash said.

While travelling Ash performed in italy, spain and london, penning songs using a guitar formerly owned by of her idol PJ Harvey.

“i was au-pairing in a remote part of italy for a uK couple. One day while i was jamming the father said ‘you sound like PJ Harvey. Have you heard of her? she used to support me. i was in her band for a while’,” Ash said.

“i was stunned. then he leant my one of her old guitars.”

Ash now works with musicnsW as well as local businesses and charities to encourage live music.

All on the back of writing new songs.

“now song writing is like cheap therapy. At least these days i can just use Bandcamp instead of the hassle of email,” Ash said.

I thought we might take a little look back at some of the awesome titles that may have been missed some of the gamers out there. This week; Red Dead Redemption. This

would probably go down in the top 5 of my all time fave titles. If you haven’t given this one a go--it’s time to saddle up!

Released in 2010, Red Dead was a sequel of sorts to 2004’s Red Dead Revolver. The game places you in the dusty dacks of John Marston, A former outlaw trying his darndest to make peace with a volatile--oft corrupt world.

There’s is just something magical about Red Dead Revolver. From the moment you take control of Marston you get a heady sense of the old western world in which you’re situated. The locales are rich and engaging and no expense has been spared with regard to detail from the pure grace of the horse animations (which are among the best ever) to the impeccable gunplay and enemy AI--this game rocks.

The size of Red Dead Redemption is remarkable. The main story line itself will take the average player around 20 hours to complete, not to mention the countless side missions and rewarding online multiplayer modes. Add to that the various updates and DLC and you’ve got a game will keep you going for quite a while.

The landscapes and environments in Red Dead are superb. I often find myself aimlessly wandering the countryside taking in the sites. A sunrise from the top of a snow-capped mountain, the searing heat of the Buffalo plains. The game design and atmosphere is so awesome you can almost smell the cow dung.

Red Dead is an absolute must have for your collection. A massive world, awesome graphics, incredible gameplay, magic AI and a ginormous world to play in help cement Red Dead as one of the best games ever created.

SocialSceneMore laughs!Something to tickle your funny bone...

THE PERFECT HUSBAND Several men are in the locker room of a golf club. A cell phone on a bench rings and a man engages the hands-free speaker function and begins to talk. Everyone else in the room stops to listen.

MAN: “Hello”WOMAN: “Honey, it’s me. Are you at the club?”MAN: “Yes”WOMAN: “I’m at the mall now and found this beautiful leather coat. It’s only $1,000. Is it OK if I buy it?”MAN: “Sure, go ahead if you like it that much.”

WOMAN: “I also stopped by the Mercedes dealership and saw the new 2007 models. I saw one I really liked.”MAN: “How much?”WOMAN: “$80,000.”MAN: “OK, but for that price I want it with all the options.”

WOMAN: “Great! Oh, and one more thing. The house we wanted last year is back on the market. They’re asking $950,000.”MAN: “Well, then go ahead and give them an offer, but just offer $900,000.”WOMAN: “OK. I’ll see you later! I love you!”MAN: “Bye, I love you, too.”

John Crawford used his skills in repair and maintenance to turn an old beat up cart, into an awesome replica!

John is a guy who likes to keep busy. he spent his working days as a maintenance man with the orange Base hospital fixing the various problems that arose. Yet nothing has changed with his retirement, as he keeps his hands and mind busy with a range of projects!

John got the opportunity to tackle this unique restoration after he got his hands on an old unused cart. he immediately knew what he was going to do with it.

“a friend of mine had this scale model of an old 1942 willy Jeep, and I thought it would be great if I could turn the old cart into something that resembles the willy Jeep.”

So he stripped down the cart and started from scratch, building from the floor up.

It took John just over a month to finish the impressive jeep, using over 200 pop rivets and bits and pieces he salvaged.

“I noticed a neighbour of mine had a load of ply wood that he was taking to the tip... I

said ‘hang on, I’ll have that!’ and I used it to make the grill and

the back section!” John said.“It has everything a

modern scooter has from blinkers, a horn and even a spare tyre on the back!”

The jeep doesn’t just stay in the shed... John takes it out for a ride whenever he gets the chance!

“I’ve taken it down the street a couple of times and it certainly turns some heads! The

good thing is the side panel holds a carton of milk perfectly!” he laughed.

John would like to encourage other retirees to keep active. “I can’t stand sitting around and doing nothing... you’ve got to keep busy!”

If you see John out and about on his Jeep... give him a wave!

Hey hey everyone, I’m in the good ole USA and it is absolutely freezing. I left Sydney and it was a warm and sunny 29C and I landed into LA for the Chris PaulCelebrity invitational where it was about 10C and then directly after that I flew toDover, Delaware and it was -5C. My shirts, shorts and things were just not cut out for all of this cold :)The Chris Paul was awesome fun. I got to mingle with stars such as Drew Carey, singer Ciara, NFL star Reggie Bush and of course Chris Paul himself. It came down to the final frames to see if Chris Paul and I could win his event for a 3rd straight year. Did we do it? Well, you will just have to wait to watch it on ESPN when it airs :) I have now also finished a coaching clinic in Dover and it was seriously tip top. Dover is much like Orange in the face that it is a small city and the people there are extremely friendly. Everyone seems to know everyone and the support for an event like the IAB clinic was second to none. I had a great time and the IAB team will 100% be back in Dover. Till next time Be good, or if you can’t, be careful. Cheers Jason
