1-9. Message for Applicants

Our education goal is to develop engineers and researchers who will support our society in the future, and who possess a global perspective and high ethical standards. While at university not only do our students acquire specialist technical knowledge in their chosen major, they also have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and learn about the world and people around them. This includes cultivating a deep awareness and understanding about the relationship between society and the environment, and understanding about different cultures and the importance of communication skills as a tool to play an active role in international society. Furthermore, from October this year the Faculty has become the first among all faculties and departments at Kyushu University to establish a degree program in English, enabling students to take all their courses and lectures in English, from the first year through to graduation. This development means that we are now able to welcome many overseas students. The new Ito Campus, which stretches over 275 hectares in Nishi Ward of Fukuoka City and Itoshima City, is the largest campus in Japan and is set in a beautiful location. From our new home we will continue to produce graduates with a global outlook, who possess specialist scientific and technical knowledge, coupled with outstanding skills that will help to lead future generations. I look forward to welcoming the young people of today, who are the bearers of dreams and hope for the future.

(The college was legally attached to Kyoto Imperial University at that time). In 1911, Kyushu Imperial University, along with the Colleges of Medicine and Engineering, were established. Since then various reforms have been made to the higher education system in Japan, such as the introduction of a new educational format after World War II and the reorganization of national universities to University Corporations in 2004. The total number of students currently amounts to19377, while the faculty members number2099. International exchange programs are also greatly encouraged at Kyushu University. With this in mind, the university accepts many overseas students each year. At present there are more than 1,500 international students from about eighty countries studying here. Kyushu University is located in Fukuoka city, which is the largest city of Kyushu island, Japan. http://www.isc.kyushu-u.ac.jp/g30/aboutus.html 3.Features of Graduate School Given Kyushu University's position as a foremost graduate university, the central aim the Graduate School of Engineering is to be a leader in the advancement of industrial technology in Japan. We endeavor to provide an education framework which nurtures talented individuals who possess outstanding professional and comprehensive abilities to assist the continuous development of human beings. To achieve this goal, in adherence to the Kyushu University Educational Charter, the Graduate

Through these education and research opportunities, we aim to systematically nurture engineers, researchers, and educators who will build and maintain the future social infrastructure. To achieve this, the following programs are offered:

A high-level professional education with systemized instruction from foundation to application Internships with affiliated industries, government offices, and academia, and a practical education

in the use of the TA/RA system An education with an international focus An education that trains students to develop leadership and independent problem solving skills

throughout the entire research process. http://www.eng.kyushu-u.ac.jp/e/graduate/civil/index.html

Department of Urban and Environmental Engineering The Department of Urban and Environmental Engineering provides comprehensive education and research opportunities by providing advanced knowledge and technology that contribute to environment preservation, reclamation, and creation. The purpose of this is to address the issues of community and urban environments, such as land use, landscape, traffic, water, and waste issues, with the aim of creating a harmonious natural and human environment. We also nurture engineers, researchers, and educators who will be able to support the future social infrastructure and its maintenance. To achieve these goals, we offer the following education programs:

(Specific Research Fields No.13.14.15) Department of Earth Resources Engineering The Division is involved in the sustainable development of energy and mineral resources essential for all types of industrial infrastructure and society, as well as the novel development of green technology, and resources recycling. In addition, our target is to foster global technologists and researchers who can proactively apply creative thinking and unique invention skills. The Division provides professional education relating to underground energy and mineral resources, ranging from surveying to development and usage. Furthermore, faculty members and graduate students are able to appreciate the Division's fields of study as comprising essential elements of earth systems, and deal with resources and environment from the perspective of coexistence with the earth's environment. Our ultimate target is for students to acquire values and skills based on these policies, ready to become active as researchers and technologists in these fields, both in Japan and overseas. http://www.eng.kyushu-u.ac.jp/e/graduate/earth/index.html

8. Message from PEACE participants 1. In my opinion Kyushu University mostly known as a Research Institution in the world is very good university for a research project. It has a lot of technical facilities such as very well equipped laboratories, a fruitful library connected with famous Academic Journals, Data bases and other universities' libraries in the world. The campus environment is quite good for a university life. There is Halal Restaurant, and very well equipped gymnasium and most importantly the Kyushu University allocated a specific space for Muslims to perform their prayers. There are many international students from different Asian, African and European countries and they have International student association called KUFSA (Kyushu University Foreign Student Association) which they have a lot activity during an academic year. As an Afghan student in Kyushu University I recommend studying here. 2. Life in Japan will be very comfortable and fun once you settled in Japan. Japan has very friendly people, but they are a little shy. They usually hesitate to start conversation with strangers. Therefore, you need to start conversation with them once you start the conversation then you find them very friendly. For Muslims, life is much easier now. There are a number of Halal shops in each prefecture so you can find Halal food easily now. Also, you can order Halal food by Internet they have very quick service. In addition, there is also Fukuoka Mosque a few Kilometers from Ito Campus very close to Hakozaki Campus where Muslims do activities. There is no security, sexual harassment or any other concerns related to the living in Japan. Therefore, you can live in Japan without any concerns at all.
