CounselorsCornerNurturingaGrowthMindset
Over 30 years ago StanfordUniversity Professor,Dr. CarolDweck, and her colleaguesbecame interested instudentattitudes towards learningand failure. Theyobserved thatwhile some students rebounded frommistakes and failure others seemeddevastated byeven the smallest setbacks. After studying thousands of children, Dr. Dweck coined theterms “fixed mindset” and “growthmindset” to describe the underlying beliefs peoplehave about learning and intelligence. Fixedmindset people are inclined to believe thatintelligence and talents “are born”, therefore, effort in learning isminimal because theybelieve that their ability is a fixed trait. While students that nurture a growthmindsetbelieve that intelligence has a malleable quality and can “be built” through embracingchallenges, effort, and learning frommistakes. When students believe that they can getsmarter, they understand that effortmakes them stronger. Therefore, they put in extratime and effort because they know that they can actually grow their brains, they gainstrength by persevering through the struggle of learning something new that leads tohigherachievement.Recent advances in neuroscience have shown us that the brain is farmoremalleablethanwe ever knew. Research on brain plasticity has shown how connectivity betweenneuronscanchangewithexperience.Studiesondifferentkindsofpraisehavealsoshownthatparentandteacherfeedbackcanmakeadifferenceaswell.Wecaneitherencourageachildtochooseachallengeandincreaseachievementorlookforaneasywayout.Researchhasshownthattellingchildrenthat“theyaresmart”encouragesafixedmindset,whereaspraisinghardworkandeffortcultivatesandpromotesagrowthmindset. Whenstudentshave a growthmindset they take on challenges and learn from them.
