Volume 13, Number 11 November 2015

This sign was made by brothers Jerry Bradford and Dwight Bradford who both drive 1929 pick-ups. The radiator shell came from Jerry’s pickup and Dwight got the idea to make a bulletin board out of it. Dwight cut the plywood for the insides. Dwight looked at the sign and thought it would make a good sign to welcome participants to the MAFCA National Awards Banquet. Dwight brazed the radiator cap. It was a joint creative effort and much appreciated by the three hosting clubs.

RESIDENT’S CORNER, By Dennis Perry

1928 ~ 1929 ~ 1930 ~ 1931

Greetings Rogue Valley A's, I hope everyone survived a wild Saturday night of Halloween parties and “Trick or Treating”. While on the surviving theme, Michelle and I survived our youngest daughter’s wedding on October 10

th. All the planning, tears,

and money spent came together for one glorious event. It did rain, (imagine that happening in Portland), but had it not rained we wouldn’t have this fantastic picture. At the reception, one very special moment for me was an Averie/Gramps dance with my 8 year old granddaughter. When Averie heard that I was doing a Father/Daughter dance with the Bride she decided there needed to be a Gramps/Granddaughter dance as well. Averie takes dance lessons and was a very quick study learning the old 50’s style swing dance during a practice session. Our dance was very well received by all the spectators at the reception complete with cheers and applause. Later, during a quiet moment, Averie told me that she wants me to dance with her at her wedding. With a tear in my eye, I told her that it is a date. Do you think she has Gramps’ number? I want to thank Dan Doss, Kyle Edwards, Nell Mathern, and Kitsy Wikkerink for volunteering to be our President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer, respectively, for 2016. I also would like to thank Jerry Mathern for streamlining the election process. Jerry, your idea saved a lot of time and energy. Everyone please sign up to help with the National Award Banquet. Our Planning Committee has expended a great deal of effort putting this event together. We as a club need to step up and help make it a big success. Lets all take pride in our chapter and the Rogue Valley. Don’t forget DQ on November 7th. I hope to see you there. Happy Trails, Dennis

Tech Tips

We are often asked about the color(s) of our Model A’s. Answer to basic questions can be found on the MAFCA website: www.mafca.com/tqa_paint.html QUESTION:

Are the Color Charts from the Model A Restoration Guidelines and Judging Standards available on the MAFCA web site? ANSWER:

Yes there is - click here: http://www.mafca.com/tqa_paint_charts.html QUESTION:

Are there photos of Model A's painted in authentic colors on the website? ANSWER:

Yes, check the GALLERY pages under "What Color Is It?" QUESTION:

I'm about ready to have the 1931 Deluxe Tudor painted and a question has come up about the door and pillars. Lower body is Brewster Green, upper body is Black. Do you know what color the inside (hinge area and door check arm area and above) of the car that is above the lower body is supposed to be? Brewster Green or Black? I'm wondering if lower body color extends from the lower body and the interior cowl area up the door pillars/hinged area and around the door windows including the door top steel frame (remembering that there's the wood graining on the door trim and around the windshield) and along the entire length of rearward door pillars where the dovetails are located. Thanks for fielding this question! Jim Morris, New York ANSWER:

The latest version of the Model A Ford Paint and Finish Guide says that the entire body was painted lower body color with the gas tank, doors and deck lid (when appropriate) installed. This included the door jambs. The caption for the photos on the bottom of page 4 indicate that "the secondary color was applied primarily with the doors in the closed position". Since the door overlaps the body along the rear edge, the door would have been slightly open to catch that portion but no masking was used so that a "soft color break" appears. Upper body color did not extend around the door post or jamb. Excellent photos to illustrate this process. -- Chuck Christensen, 2012 Technical Director 05/05/12

There are two (2) non-elected positions in the club that need to be filled for 2016:

Tour Director/Guide:

responsibilities include, but are not limited to, working with other club members to plan and schedule tours, keeping in mind the seasons of the year and scheduling season-specific activities (i.e., don’t schedule long, long trips during the summer months when driving conditions might tax our precious cars). This position could easily be held by a small committee.

There are several important things to remember for December 2015. The following list is not all-inclusive (there may be other events that are not listed below)

1. The MAFCA Annual Awards Banquet will take place at Inn at the Commons in Medford December 2-5. The three hosting clubs (Henry’s Lady in Grants Pass, Rogue Valley A’s in Medford, and the Sis-Q-A’s in Yreka) will need volunteers to assist with providing cookies for the hospitality room, registration and “manning” the hospitality and raffle rooms.

2. A new donut sign-up sheet will make the rounds. We will need three dozen (36) donuts for eleven (11) meetings in 2016; donuts will not be needed for the December meeting.

3. There will be an installation of new board members at the December meeting. After the meeting/installation there will be a potluck meal. A sign-up sheet for that potluck meal will be passed around immediately before the November business meeting and will be included in the club’s December newsletter.

4. Membership renewals will be due by the end of 2015 (see page 15 for renewal form.
