2010 MILWAUKEE MODEL CONTEST

This is the 7th in a series of online-only PhotoBooks covering the model contest at a national convention. As with the previous installments, I tried to use at least one photo, and very often many photos, of each model appearing under the text information box to show each model’s detailing to its best advantage. A sample of the listing format is shown in the box at the bottom of this page. This was a huge amount of work but was done to better show the modeling commu-nity, and the general public, what the Achievement Program (AP) scoring was on each of the models judged in this contest. It is also a way to show that more than just a small handful of models were entered in the contest as in publications of the past, only the winners of a contest have been displayed, whereas there have always been many more models entered or displayed in the contest room. At Milwaukee this year I took over 3000 photos between the contest room, the mod-ule contest at the Train Show, and the two awards ceremonies. With that many pho-tos to draw from it can easily be seen that almost every one of the models will have multiple views available and I have picked the photos that do the best job of showcas-ing each modeler’s workmanship.

Last year we introduced the Kit-Built categories which parallel the Scratch-Built categories. Previ-ously there had been no distinction between the two however it was decided to make the playing field more level for the non-scratch-builders among us. This means that we kit builders now have a level playing field where kit-built models can earn their own place awards. Additional information on all of the Contests at the convention, including all of the forms and the AP Judging Guidelines, can be found online at the NMRA’s website:

www.nmra.org As some of you have asked how and what to fill out on the Model Contest Judges Sheet, where possible I have included photocopies of those sheets with some of the models that were entered in the contest. In some cases the modeler attaches a sepa-rate sheet of paper listing what was done or listing parts that were made or added and writes “see attached” under that judging category. It should be pointed out that in looking at the few lines available on the Judges form, you should not assume that you need to be limited only to the amount of space available. Where more room is needed you can either use the back of the form or use a separate sheet of paper to describe or list what you did and the number of parts you used or fabricated. If you choose this route, be sure to point out to the judges that they need to look at a separate sheet (i.e. “see attached”). Also remember that when you are filling out the form, in most cases the judges need to be educated just as you were on what you are trying to accomplish, and for that reason you should also include whatever information you used to educate yourself on the prototype being modeled such as photos, articles, or whatever. In the case of a freelanced model, you should explain what you used as a guideline to build the model. Does it represent generally accepted methods of construction and if so what are they? Use photos and/or drawings of similar subjects to further your case. On the other hand, keep your explanations or lists short and to the point! In other words don’t write a book-length explanation, you can do that later when you write an article on the model that you built for a publication such as NMRA Magazine! (Hint) I hope some of you who are viewing this PhotoBook will be encouraged to enter fu-ture contests in your local club, division, region or at the next national convention. If you are not interested in a contest format, please remember that there is also the Modeler’s Showcase category available where you may bring whatever models you are working on or wish to show-off to your fellow modelers. You may also bring mod-els that you do not want entered in the contest but want (need) to have AP judged to further your progress in the Achievement Program. See you in Sacramento! PVV

One of our Special Awards sponsors is the IWATA company which makes Professional Air-brushes. The award includes airbrush equipment along with a plaque. Winners this year seen here with Tom Grossman of IWATA are (clockwise from top) Dennis Eggert, Amanda Wade and Jeff Eggert.



The Brass Bell Award is provided by the Broth-erhood of Locomotive Engineers and as the name implies, really is a Brass Bell. Each year this award is given to the best locomotive entry in either the Steam (odd years) or Diesel (even years) categories on an alternating year basis. This was a Diesel year and so this year’s winner is Dennis Eggert, seen here at right with Contest Chairman Bob Hamm, MMR, for his C&NW Slug Set 847-BU33-854. You can see the model in the Scratchbuilt Rolling Stock PhotoBook.

The Brass Lantern Award is provided by the Untied Transportation Union and is also an actual object, in this case a real Brass Lantern. The award is given for the best “Over the Road” caboose meaning it has to be a model of a “mainline” type of caboose. At times this means that it will not also be the highest scoring ca-boose entry. However this year it is and here we see contest winner Jim Grell (left) accepting the Lantern from Contest Chair Bob Hamm, MMR. Jim’s winning caboose entry can also be seen in the Scratchbuilt Rolling Stock PhotoBook.

Winner of this year’s Bach-man Innovations Award, Sam Swanson is also this year’s Gold Award—Best of Show winner. Sam is seen here with his award winning model of a Barnhart Log Loader mounted on a flat car with a second flat car being loaded with logs. This is a very good educational type model showing both how logs were loaded onto flat cars and also how the Barnhart could be moved between cars by using the short ramps that were placed atop the wood side rails of each car. Chief Contest Judge Allen Gross, MMR shows us the William J. Lenior Locomotive Construction award plaque which is handed out each year only if there is a qualified entry winner. To qualify you must have built the best scratch built steam locomotive entry in the contest. This is a steam-only award and if there are no qualified entries for a particular year, then the award is not given out. Like the Brass Lantern award, eligible entries must also be “Over the Road” type mod-els meaning in this case mainline type steam locomotives—not switchers, tea kettles or the like. This year’s winner is Phillip Bonzon for his “B&O 4-6-2 "Cincinnation" steam locomotive entry shown here at right.

The Contest Awards Ceremony was held in one corner the contest room. Food service was provided for guests prior to the start of the ceremony.
