ALBANY Avalanche Manager: Pat Barry (Elizabeth) Age: 62 Occupation: Retired; MLB Stringer; Cloistered Crazy

The Season Story

It was the end f a long good run, and 88 wins is not a bad way to go out. Some of the old stars showed their old

swag; there just are not enough of them left around to make the playoffs. Ted Williams enjoyed a fine year

putting up MVP caliber numbers. Eddie Joost had an All Star season at shortstop. Jeff Hath, Dick Sisler and

Elmer Vial were solid contributors. All in all a decent offense. Mel Parnell, Bobby Schmitz, Bob Rush and

Ellis Kinder were a formidable rotation, but that lack of any bullpen at all was this team’s Achilles’ Heel. So

the team heads off into the dark valley. At least watching Ted will get us through what promises to be some

very lean years. Name AVG SPC OBP G AB R H RBI 2B 3B HR TB BB IW K SH SF SB CS HBP GDP RC RC27

The Season Story

Another rebuilding year with over 100 losses (a horrible 121 to be exact!). With some decent prospects like

Buddy Lewis, Arkie Vaughn, Augie Galan and Bucky Walters plus copious high draft picks in a very deep 1947

draft the future can only get brighter.

BEVERLY Hillbillies Manager: Mike Dickinson (Andrea) Age: 50 Occupation: Meteorologist/Philanthropist

The Season Story

The season unfolded as expected given the team was bereft of pitching and lacked offensive firepower. In fact, I

am surprised the team did as well as they did. Offensively, the team was paced by Enos Slaughter and a

smattering of others during the course of the season. The Hillbillies only hit 78 home runs on the season... a

sure sign that the Cement Pond was a little too deep for this squad. Ray Scarborough was by far the team's best

hurler and was one of only two Hillbillies with ERAs under 3.00. Without quality pitching, it looks like more

of the same for the Hillbillies going backward.

BLOOMINGTON Burning Bunyans Manager: Bob Weisman (Janet) Age: 59 Occupation: Meteorology Professor

The Season Story

Bloomington tried to lift itself out of being relegated to the Atmospheric Conference. The offensive strategy of

having Murtaugh, McCosky, Stewart, Conatser et al single or walk their way on base and have Ken Keltner

drive them in worked to the tune of Keltner setting a team record of 163 RBI and having the best individual

season (155 runs created) since the days of Eddie Mathews. The struggle was to get the key hit, rather than the

double play. The pitching was mediocre for a while, then turned it on during a 56-28 tear to rally for first place

in the conference. And, Wally Westlake and Danny Litwhiler took up the cause to allow Bloomington to

petition to enter the upper (Oceanic) Conference. However, the especially shaky bullpen and the inability to get

key hits led to once again being relegated to the inferior conference. Oh, well…Ken Keltner was fun to watch

while it lasted.

BROOKLYN Browns

Manager: Jim Pertierra (Janet) Age: 70 Occupation: Stat Supervisor MLB.com

The Season Story

The top 4 in the lineup, Appling, DiMaggios, Doby set the pace and it was a fine year in Flatbush. Not a playoff

year, but a very satisfying one from start to finish and helped take my mind off other things. We were all going

to finish behind the Ravagers from the get go and that was the fact. Especially noted was the great year from

Bob Lemon who fell just shy of the 30 win mark but was the staff leader from day 1

right until the end. Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby have both hinted at retiring after the 1947 season so it will

be one to savor. It is always fun.

CHESTERTOWN Blue Herons Manager: Eric Rogers

Age: 61 Occupation: Meteorologist

The Season Story

The Herons battled Summer and Bloomington for the top two spots in the Atmos Conference, ending up in a tie

with Summer for second place. The tie-breaker game at Summer was a classic, as the Cyclones came back from

an early 5-1 deficit against ERA Champ Vern Bickford, taking a 8-6 lead into the 9th, but the Herons had their

last hurrah with a two out rally to tie it before losing in the 10th inning. This was the swan song for CH's

competitive run from 1959-1948, as it's time to rebuild. We bid a fond farewell to Richie Ashburn, who ends his

run as the first CH player to amass over 3000 career hits, with a team leading .338 career batting average. Name AVG SPC OBP G AB R H RBI 2B 3B HR TB BB IW K SH SF SB CS HBP GDP RC RC27

DULUTH Thundercats Manager: Kevin Tyle (Bryan) Age: 56 Occupation: Computer Administrator/Meteorologist

The Season Story

Duluth was locked in a season-long battle for 2nd place but outlasted division rivals Albany, Moosen, and

Brooklyn thanks to its deep lineup. Most of the offensive eight could just be penciled in day after day. The team

batted over .300 for the year, with Tommy Holmes cracking .360! That more than made up for a decent but

unspectacular mound staff, although Hal Newhouser and Johnny Vander Meer had fine seasons. What kept

Duluth from having a great year, and perhaps even besting the division leader Oakdale Ravagers in the playoffs,

was a disappointing season from Johnny Sain. Manager Kevin Tyle had his own take on the famous poem,

penning "Prayed for rain instead of Sain"!

EL DORADO Gold Sox

Manager: Jack Kohn (Patti) Team Name Change for 1947

Age: 82 Occupation: Retired USAF Sonoma Crushers

The Season Story

Except for their ten games (2-8) with the potent Oakdale squad, the Gold Sox battled on even terms with their

1948 rivals. The majority of their matches were close enough for the Sox to go into period three action with

hopes of making the post season playoffs. Thanks to a 12-2 performance vs. Arkansas, the Sox still had a

chance until the last series of the season when they lost to Summer, 6-1. Bob Dillinger (.325) and Hoot Evers

(.317) anchored the offense by playing all 154 games. Part timers Dick Wakefield and Frank McCormick will

help in future seasons. Gold Sox pitching finished fourth with a team ERA of 3.98 and allowed just 69 home

runs. When the hitting improves, franchise will have a chance to move up.

The Season Story

On paper the Squirrel looked a strong possibility for a post season wild card spot. Then the season started and

reality set in. The Squirrel would have to wait at least another year. The team offense and pitching were decent

but not quite decent enough to get the job done. But somewhere in the recesses of Ebbets Field, the Squirrel's

home park we can hear cries of "Wait 'til next year!!!" Or in the Retro League it may be "Wait 'til last year!!!"

NORTH ADAMS Bevers Manager: Mike Ameen

Age: 56 Occupation: Restaurateur & H.S. Softball Coach

The Season Story

Another lost season for the Bevers in 1948. They finished 6th (57-97) 29 games off the pace. The team pitching

era was 5.78. Only 3 pitchers had a era under 4.00. Boo Ferris had 10 wins and Bubba Harris 12 saves as the

seasons low lights from this aging staff. The Bevers offense was led again by Andy Pafko (.317, 35 2bs, 2 3bs

and 32 hrs. The 32 hrs was good for 2nd in the league. He also scored 116 runs and knocked in 123. Also

contributing were Walker Cooper .324 and 20 hr’s , Tommy Henrich with 18 hr’s,106 runs scored and 104 rbi’s.

Also Dale Mitchell hit .333 and scored 104 runs. The future does look a little better moving forward. The

management has done a good job rebuilding the offense but the pitching staff will continue to be an issue until

some new blood can be added through the draft and maybe a trade or two. Here is to hoping 1947 is better for

the Bevers than the first 2 years of the 1940's.

OAKDALE Ravagers Manager: Mike Landin (Teri) Age: 66 Occupation: Retired/Senior Softball Player

TML Champion

The Season Story

The careful drafting of the 1950s and crafty blockbuster trades by George Biffenbrenner of the past three

seasons finally put all the pieces together for a “dream season!” After putting up 110 wins during the run-a-way

regular season, the Ravagers played great “team” ball to defeat two worthy opponents in Duluth and

Bloomington to win the TML Championship. The regular season Superstar and unanimous TML MVP “Stan

the Man” Musial had a rough post season, but his teammates rallied behind him. Ralph Kiner even had a tough

World Series, but hit a key HR late in the final game. This team’s primary strength was its offense, which

sported no fewer than six (6) players with 100+ RCs, led by Musial’s incredible 206 RCs! Musial led the league

in most offensive categories and his TML Record 39-game hitting streak was extremely exciting, breaking Ron

Fairly’s 38-game hitting streak set back in 1972. Gordon was the HR champ with 42. Not to be overlooked, the

starting pitching was strong and deep, led by dual “Aces” Warren Spahn (25-5) and Gene Bearden (20-9). The

team should be more balanced and stronger offensively and defensively in 1947, with even deeper pitching! Let

the ravaging continue!

The Season Story

The slide. It has begun. Two consecutive years in the World Series 'tis now but a memory. The offense was the

first to spring a leak, with a lack of power and lack of contact leading to the second worst offense in the league.

It was Hank Sauer, Al Zarilla and the rest of the misfit pieces. Would have been worse without some over

performance on the defensive side of the books. Vic Raschi was king of the bump notching 18 wins, but

Kretlow was Mr. Hard Luck with 20 losses (despite being fourth in the league in QS). But you have to look past

the 139 walks. Sadness ahead. Great sadness.

SUMMER Cyclones Manager: Ken Fusci (Rozanne) Age: 72 Occupation: Retired – Part Time at Saratoga Casino

The Season Story

A somewhat better than expected season for SM, tieing for second in the Conference and winning an exciting

extra-inning tie-breaker vs CH for entry to the Conference Playoffs. They made the best of their mid to lower

pack Team standing in pitching and batting. They did lead the League in Team fielding; however, it ended up

being key errors in the deciding 6th game of the Conference Finals that led to their undoing. Third baseman

Hank Majeski led the team with 211 hits while carrying a .338 AVG; Dizzy Trout was the pitching leader with a

low 2.72 ERA along with a 14-6 record. Weakness in the Outfield will likely hold them back, but a decent

Pitching staff is likely to see them remain competitive at least, if not a contender going back to the '47 Season. Name AVG SPC OBP G AB R H RBI 2B 3B HR TB BB IW K SH SF SB CS HBP GDP RC RC27

Stat Key

RC (Runs Created) = [(A times B) plus C], all divided by D, where

A = H + BB + HBP - CS – GIDP

B = TB + [.26 x (BB - IBB + HBP)]

C = .52 x (SH + SF + SB)

D = AB + BB + HBP + SH + SF

RC / 27 outs: runs created per 27 outs; in other words, the number of runs a player

would create if he were to bat in all nine positions in the batting order.

QS (Quality Starts): the number of starts in which a pitcher pitches six (6) innings

or more and gives up three (3) runs or fewer.

OAVG: the batting percentage against each pitcher.

**************************************************************

Batting & Pitching Leaders: the following symbols were used to denote

individual accomplishments that were record-breakers:

♦ - TML Record

◊ - Tied TML Record

Team Stats: an asterisk ( * ) preceding any stat indicates that the player or pitcher

led his Association in that stat category; a caret ( ^ ) indicates that the player or

pitcher tied for the lead in his Association in that stat category.
