Th e Fl ori s s ant United Soccer Club, Incorporated, ( a n ot f or profit corporation), is extremely p r oud and happy to serve as sponsor for the second y e ar, at the annual soccer tournament of the N.A.I.A.

1 ational Champion-in 1 5 \hen Slippery Rock lle e(PA) hosted the initial

a i 1al occer Championships. lipp ry Roe al o hosted the 1960

T urnament and since that time the 1 AI 1 s ati onal Soccer Tournament ha grown to over 200 member schools ying for one of the tournament

spots. In the last 15 years the AIA at·onal Soccer Tournament has

produced some of the most thrilling and bizarre contests in the entire package of the 16 NAIA National Tournaments.

The first tournament - a four team invitational affair held in miserable weather in 1959 was won by Pratt Institute (NY). Elizabethtown {NJ) and Newark College of Engineering (NJ) battled into overttme in 1960 with the match ending in a 2-2 tie when the contest was halted by darkness.

Howard University (DC) won the 1961 Tournament staged at Lock Haven State (PA) and the 1962 crown went to East Stroudsburg State (PA) as the championships were held at Earlham College, Richmond, Indiana.

In 1963 the weatherman moved back into the picture at the NAIA National Soccer Tournament hosted again by Earlham College. It rained on Friday during the semi-finals; then as temperatures dropped, the rain turned to snow. Although the Tournament Officials mad e every effort to complete the tournament, the cold wind and snow forced the issue 'and Earlham and Castleton State (VT) were declared co-champions.

Trenton State (NJ) became the first school to win back-to-back Soccer Championships with titles in 1964 and 1965. Quincy College (ILL.) duplic ated the feat inl966 and 1967. The 1967 title match was the first "Midwest" title affair in NAIA Soccer his tory as Quincy defeated Rockhurst College of Kansas City, Missouri, 3-1.

The growth of NAIA Soccer was evident in 1968 by the fact that all

eight of the NAIA Area Soccer Cham pions journeyed to Quincy, Illinois for four days of round - rob in com petition. When it wa s all over, Davis and Elkins College of Elkins, West Virginia used a superior de-f e n s e to e d g e Q u i n cy , 2 - 1 , i n 6 overtimes. Up to this time this was the longest game ·in NAIA Soccer history.

Earlham College again hosted the 1969 Champio nships that saw Eastern Illinois University derail Davis and Elkins'bi d for a second consecutive NAIA National Soccer Championship when they edged the West Virginians, 1-0, in two overtimes.

Davis and Elkins returned to the NAIA Soccer throne with a thrillin g 2-0 win over Quincy in the 1970 finals. The 1970, 1971 and 1972 Tournaments were hosted by the Dunn , North Carolina Chamber of Commerce with the 1970 Tournament establish - -ing an all time attendance record when 11,314 spectators witnessed the six sessions of the tournament. The 1970 Tournament also set another -record when the "Longest Game Ever Played" took place w.h.en Davis and Elkins edged New Paltz University (NY) 1-0 at the 2:05 mark of the 8th overtime in the first round of play.

Weather again played a major role in the 1971 Tournament as rain, snow, sleet and wind caused cancellation of the consolation and losers' bracket games on Saturday. Playing S a t u rd a y a ft e r n o o n , t he C h a m p i o n.s h i p Game again pitted two old rivals together as Quincy topped Davis and Elkins 1-0. 1972 saw rain and snow again play havoc with the tournament sc~edule as Westmont College of Santa Barbara, California became the first NAIA National Soccer Champion west of the Mississippi River as they defeated Davis and Elkins 2-1 in two overtimes for tne Championship.

Moving to Florissant, Missouri · for the 1973 Tournament, Quincy College added their 4th National Soccer Tournament crown to their trophy case as they defeated Rockhurst College (MO) 3-0 in the finals.

NAIA'S AREA SOCCER COMPETITION

In the NAIA's National Soccer Tournament Championships the United States is divided into eight Areas. Each of the teams entered in the 16th Annual NAIA National Soccer Tournament represents the best team from each of these eight Areas. Each of the eight teams entered in this Tournament has survived the Area Playoffs to get to the National Tournament. The Area Playoffs are conducted by the NAIA Area Soccer Representative for that Area and the eight Area Champions make up the National Tournament Field. Two hundred and one NAIA Soccer playing instituti·ons started the year, with a berth in the National Tournament as their goal, and of these 201 schools the best eight remain. The eight NAIA Soccer Areas are as follows:

AREA I ..... California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Idaho, Alaska and Hawaii. Twenty-three NAIA schools play soccer in Area I. Dick Lyons, Occidental College is the Area I Soccer Representative.

AREA !! .... Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana comprise Area II. Seventeen NAIA schools play soccer under the direction of Terry Hanson, Benedictine College, the Area II Representative.

AREA III ... Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming make up the geographical location of Area III under Area Representative Frank Longo of Quincy College. Twenty-seven NAIA member institutions engage in soccer as a varsity intercollegiate sport in Area I I I .

AREA IV .... Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio are the states represented in this Area. Twenty-eight NAIA schools play soccer under the watchful eye of Dr. Charles Matlack, Earlham College, the Area IV Representative.

AREA V ..... North and South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Virginia supply the 31 NAIA schools that play soccer. James "CATFISH" Cole, of Campbell College in Buies Creek, North Carolina serves as Area V Representative.

AREA VI .... Western Pennsylvania, Western Maryland and West Virginia comprise Area VI. Jim Egli, Slippery Rock State College (Pa.) and a member of the NAIA SOCCER HALL OF FAME, serves as Area VI Representative.

AREA VII ... Western New York, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., Delaware, Eastern Pennsylvania and Eastern Maryland make up Area VII under the direction of E. Douglas Burke, Houghton College (NY), Area VII Representative. Twenty-seven NAIA Soccer playing schools vie for the Area VII Championship.

AREA VIII .. Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Islandt Vermont and Massachusetts are the states represented by Soccer Representative Frank Tripp of Southeastern Ma ssachusetts University. Thirty NAIA soccer playing institutions are represented by Professor Tripp, a member of the NAIA SOCCER HALL OF FAM E .

HONORARY COACHES HAVE UNIQUE HISTORY

Five ational Tournaments conducted by the NAIA - Basketball, Baseball Golf, Soccer and Tennis - have adopted the Honorary Co ch Program. The Honorary Coach idea was originated in 1948 and was the workmanship of three men: Frank Hesselroth, Charlie Stevenson of Kansas City (the home of NAIA) and the late Emil S. Liston, former Athletic Director of Baker University, Baldwin, Kansas and the founder of NAIA and the NAIA National Basketbal 1 Tournament.

Their purpose was to assure the Tournament field of a memorable gathering that would impress them with Kansas City. Hesselroth felt that in some of the formative years of the Basketb all Tournament that a team eliminated in the early round went home without enough recognition.

How are the Honorary Coaches selected? What do they do? What is their purpose?

The Honorary Coaches volunteer their time and each subscribes to a financial share of the sponsorships of the NAIA 1 s National Tournaments. They are assigned to teams, either by a drawing or by the sponsor and NAIA. Each Honorary Coach me ets their team upon arrival in the Tournament City; they attend the Tournament Banquet as a member of their team they sit on their team's bench during their games, offering words of encouragement and living the same moments of excitement or disappointment that is experienced by their team.

Each Honorary Coach is presented with a special gift from their school-a letter jacket, a blanket a plaque or some other commemorative gift symbolic of this team.

The purpose of the Honorary Coach Program is to make certain all eight teams feel relaxed and at home despite the fact that they m~y be hundreds or thousands of miles away from their own homes.

Countless numbers of other Tournaments and sporting events have adopted the Honorary Coach idea, but the plan originated in Kansas City for the NAIA.

Those who have served as Honorary Coaches often correspond with coaches and players and many have visited the campuses of the teams with whom they have been associated. As Frank Hesselroth so aptly put it: 11 The. Honorary Coaches of the NAIA Basketball Tournament have established a solid tradition and the Banquet which they sponsor each year for the entire Tournament field, is a heart-warming event. It takes only a brief glance at the 320 players of all races, creeds, and religions to assure anyone that this is democracy in action".
