LPB celebrated 40 years of excellence in broadcast-ingin2015.Wepaidtributetothosewhoareapartofourhistorywitharetrospectivelookatpastprogramsandpersonalities.We also created new contentwith awardwinningprogramssuchasKatrina Ten Years After :A Second Life, A Second ChancethatairednationallyandLPB’s Musical Roots: A Look Back.Our long tradi-tionofLouisianacookingshowspecialscontinueswithHooks, Lies, and Alibis with Chef John Folse andGreat American Seafood Cook-Off. Our three gubernatorial debates were carried state-wide, providing Louisiana’s citizens an opportunity tomakean informeddecisionabout theirvote. Programslike Louisiana: The State We’re In and Louisiana Public SquarecontinueLPB’scommitmenttonewsandcommunitydialogue. In2015,wehavebeenconfrontedwiththephilosophyof “doingmorewith less” aswe dealtwith budget is-suesthataffectedtheentirestate.Wehavebeenfortunatetohavegenerousviewersupport.Oursuccessfulpledgedrivesprovidedfundingtopurchasethequalityprogram-

mingourviewershavecometoexpectfromLPB. HereatLPB,wecontinuedourmissionofprovidingthe best educational programming throughout the stateofLouisianain2015.Thisattitudepermeatesallfacetsofourstationlife–fromournewsshowstoouronlineresourcesforteachersintheclassroom,fromourlocallyproduceddocumentariestoourcommunityorientedpro-gramming. WehaveconstantlyfoundcuttingedgewaystobringLPBto thepublic. WithourfreeLPBApp, thepubliccanaccessusonalltheirdevices.WehaveintroducedLPB Passport to our sustaining members which givesthem the ability to streamyears ofPBSprogramming.And,ofcourse,wehavetheLouisianaDigitalMediaAr-chivesavailabletoteachersandthepublicthroughoutthestatethatprovidesanincrediblesourceofhistoricalandculturalinformationaboutLouisiana. I look forward to another successful and productiveyear atLPB and believe thatwe can accomplish greatthingstogether.

In2015,LouisianaPublicBroadcastingcelebratedits40thyear.IampleasedtoreportthatLPB’scom-mitmenttothedeliveryofquality,diversebroadcast-ingtothepeopleofLouisianaremainsstrong. Without the support of our friends and viewers,LPB simply could not deliver the superior qualityprogrammingyouhavecometoexpect.SohowdoesLPBdoit?Duringthecourseofayear,theFriendsofLPBBoardorchestratesseveralwonderful fundrais-ers.Forexample, theArtandTravelAuction raised$53,350dollars from the sale of 275 itemsdonatedbyLouisianaartists.TheannualLegendsGalaraised$170,671throughsponsorships,ticketsalesandasi-lentauction.Thiseventhonorssomeofourmostes-teemedcitizenswhohavedistinguishedthemselvesintheirlife’sworkand,indoingso,havebroughtposi-tive recognition to the state ofLouisiana.The hon-orees in2015were theHonorableKathleenBlanco,RobertCrais,JoeDumars,RollandGoldenandRogerOgden. This level of fundraising would not be possiblewithoutourviewersandbenefactors.Thetirelessded-icationofthestaffofLouisianaPublicBroadcastingcoupledwiththeenthusiasticcontributionsofvolun-teersfromaroundthestate,whomakeuptheFriendsofLPBBoard,createtheperfectbalanceinreachingsuchloftygoals. 2016marks the final season ofDownton Abbey,aMasterpieceprogramthathasdrawnoneofLPBslargest audiences forfive seasons.The futureoffersanendlesschoiceofqualityprogrammingforallagesand all preferences. I personally can’twait. PleasejoinmeincontinuingyoursupportofLouisianaPub-licBroadcasting.

2015hasbeenalandmarkyearforLPB.Aremarkableachievement in broadcasting - 40 years on air! WhenyoustopandthinkwhathasbeenaccomplishedbyLPBinthesefourdecades,itisalmosttoomuchtocompre-hend. Think of the childrenwho have benefitted from theeducationalprogramming–fromSesame Street,Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,andReading RainbowtoDan-iel Tiger,Super WHY!,andOdd Squad. Thinkof the cultural and informativedocumentariesthathavebeenairedaroundthecountryaboutLouisiana–Atchafalaya Houseboat,Ernest J. Gaines: Loui-siana Stories, andAmerica’s Louisiana Purchase toKatrina: 10 years After,Sunshine by the Stars: Cel-ebrating Louisiana’s Music,andKate Chopin: A Re-Awakening. AsChairoftheLouisianaEducationalTelevisionAu-thorityBoard,Iseethelegacyofthepast40yearsasapreludetothenext40plusyears.Wewillstrivetokeepourcommitmentofbroadcastingthehighestqualitypro-gramsandeducationaloutreachLPBviewersexpect.

TheFoundationforExcellenceinLouisianaPublicBroadcastingplaysanessentialpartinassistingLPBincontinuingitslonghistoryofprovidingthetypesofprogrammingtheviewersofLouisianahavecometoexpect.WithoutfinancialassistancefromtheFounda-tion,theeducationalprogrammingandonlinelearn-ingcurriculumforteacherswouldbeverydifficulttoprovide;thehighcaliberdocumentariesandculturalprogramsaboutLouisianawouldbetoocostlytomake;andthenewsprogramsthatcoverthemanyissuesthataffectourstatewouldbeimpossibletocover. OurboardmembersarestewardswithwhatweconsiderafiduciaryresponsibilitytohelpguaranteethatLPBwillcontinuetothriveandprosperforyearstocome.TheFoundationiscommittedtoworkingalong-sideLPBtomakethatareality.

EVENTS CELEBRATING YEARS

Since1975,LouisianaPublicBroadcastinghasbeenthepublictelevi-sionnetworkforthestateofLouisianawithstationsinAlexandria,BatonRouge,Lafayette,LakeCharles,MonroeandShreveport.LPBisalsoaf-filiatedwithWLAE-TVinNewOrleans.Inadditiontoitsaward-winningdocumentaries about thehistory andpeople ofLouisiana,LPB is dedi-catedtohelpingchildrenthroughoutthestatedeveloptheirliteracy,mathandscienceskillsthroughitsnumerouseducationaloutreachprograms.

Throughout2015,LPBcelebratedits40thanniversary.Tobeprecise,LPBsignedontheairat11:58a.m.onSeptember6,1975,butwedecidedtomakeitayear-longcelebration.Wereceived“happyanniversary”wish-esfromeveryonefromMarthaStewarttotheSesame Street Muppets.

TheculminatingeventoftheyearwasthebiggestsingledayeventthatLPBhaseverhosted:LPB’sFamilyFunFest.With thehelpofagrantfromHitEntertainment,LPBbroughtThomas the Tank EnginetoLou-isiana.The venuewas the JohnM. ParkerColiseumon the campus ofLouisianaStateUniversityinBatonRouge.InadditiontoThomas,LPB

alsobroughtinSuperWHY!,PrincessPresto,CliffordtheBigRedDog,andCuriousGeorge.LPBofferedfreeboothstoareanon-profitagencies.Approximately40groupsparticipatedincludingOperationLifesaver,OurLady of the Lake Children’sHospital, East Baton Rouge Parish EMS,AmericanRedCross,LSUMuseumofNaturalScience,andmanymore.Inadditiontothebooths,Thomas,andthecharacters,theRedBarnFarmwastherewithapettingzoothatwasahitwithchildrenandadultsalike.Over3,000peopleattendedLPB’sFamilyFunFest,somedrivingfromhoursawaytoattend.

LPB’sLouisiana Young Heroes Awardscelebratedits20thanniver-saryin2015.Eightmoreoutstandingstudentsingrades7through12werehonoredwithadayofawards,gifts,andabanquetwheretheyfirstsawvideoprofilesdemonstratingwhytheywereselectedforthetribute.

LPB’sLouisiana Legendsalsocelebratedamilestone in2015– the25thanniversaryoftheaccolade,whichspotlightsthebestandbrightestofLouisiana’ssonsanddaughterswhohavedistinguishedthemselvesin

Inaddition to theLouisianaLegendsGala,FriendsofLPBheld twoDownton Abbey-related events. InDecember,FriendsofLPB traveledwith a groupofDownton Abbey fans toEnglandon a special holidaytour todiscoverall thatfascinatesviewersabout thispopularseries.In-cludedwasaprivatevisittoHighclereCastle,thehomeofthe“Lord&LadyGrantham”andprincipalfilminglocationoftheseries.TheyvisitedhistoricsitesinLondon,Bath,andOxfordledbyexpertsandscholarstoexplorethemannersandcustomsoftheindeliblecharacters,upstairsanddownstairs,whomourviewersknowsowell.

Also inDecember, a groupofFriendsofLPBwas thefirst to see apreviewofthemuchanticipatednewseasonofDownton Abbey,themostpopularseriesonLouisianaPublicBroadcastingandPBSinthelasttwodecades.TheyenjoyedaleisurelyafternoonofteaanddelectablepastrieswithAlastairBruce,historicaladvisorforthehitdramaseries,followedbyaspecialpreviewofSeason6.LPBcontinues to connectwith its viewers through socialmedia.The

number of fans on the Louisiana Public Broadcasting Facebook pagetoppedthe12,000markin2015.LPBcontinuestoconnectwithviewersthroughweeklye-newsletters,Twitter,Pinterest,Instagram,andPeriscope.LPBlooksforward to2016withnewproductionsandexcitingevents

andprogramming.

Musical Roots: A Look Back,whichpremieredinDecember,wasaretro-spectiveofsomeofthebestlivemusicalperformancescapturedthrough-outtheyears.AkaleidoscopeofdiverseLouisianamusicianswasfeatured,includingFatsDomino,Beausoleil,BuddyGuy,WyntonMarsalis,HarryConnick, Jr.,BuckwheatZydeco,Louisiana’sLeRoux,AllanToussaint,andothers.NickSpitzer,afolkloristandaprofessorofanthropologyandAmericanstudiesatTulaneUniversity,hosted.LPBlaunchedtheLouisianaDigitalMediaArchiveonJanuary20,2015.

TheLDMAisthefirstprojectinthenationtocombinethecollectionsofapublicbroadcasterandastatearchives.Over2,000newvideoswereaddedtothesitethroughouttheyear.Wenowhaveover3500videosavailableto thepublic.Eachmonth, theLDMAhighlightsanew topic.The top-icshighlightedin2015includedBlackHistoryMonth,Women’sHistoryMonth,the5thanniversaryoftheBPOilSpill,the10thanniversariesofHurricanesKatrinaandRita,LouisianaGovernors,andmore.Thewebsite–ladigitalmedia.org–makescompleteLPBdocumentariesthattieintothemonth’stopicavailableforviewingthroughoutthemonth.

Louisiana: The State Were In,Louisiana’sonlystatewidenewsmaga-zine,celebratedits39thyearontheair.Theseriescontinuedtocoverhard-hittingnewssuchastheBPOilsettlement,theatershootingsinLafayette,theanniversariesofHurricanesKatrinaandRita,andmedicalmarijuana.CharlieWhinhamandShaunaSanfordalsocoveredlightertopics,suchastheChristmasEvebonfires, theLouisianaSportsHallofFame,andtheLouisianaBookFestival.

theAmericanGraduate:Let’sMake ItHappen initiative.TheAmericanGraduatedropoutpreventionprogramissupportedbytheCorporationforPublicBroadcastingandallowsLPBtoidentifypeopleandorganizationsthatarehelpingdecreasethehighschooldropoutrateinthecommunitiesitserves.LPBwasfeaturedtwiceduringthenationalAmerican Graduate Day

2015broadcast, theonlystationinthecountryreceivingthisamountofattention.A“mini-doc”abouttheLSUCollegeofEngineering’sXCITESTEMCampforhighschoolgirlsandalivestudiointerviewwithmembersoftheBatonRougeYouthCoalitionwasproducedbyLPB.TheAmericanGraduateDay2015broadcastairedonover100publicmediastationsin138nationalmarketsincludingPuertoRicoandtheU.S.VirginIslands.

AsaleaduptotheOctober3rdbroadcast,BatonRougeMayor-President“Kip”HoldendeclaredthelastweekofSeptemberasAmericanGraduateWeekintheCapitalCity.LPBalsorecognizedover20AmericanGradu-ateChampionsfromtheBatonRougeareaatastationeventwithMayorHolden.Theseindividualsworkdiligentlywithstudentsinourlocalcom-munitytosupporttheAmericanGraduategoalofreachinga90%nationalgraduationrateby2020.LPBheldthreeweeksofliteracyandtechnologysummercampsfor4

and5yearolds.Forfouryearolds,weekonefocusedonliteracyandtech-nology,whileweektwofocusedonmath,science,andtechnology.Fiveyearoldsenjoyedafun-filledweekofmath,science,andtechnology.Thecampsutilizedsuccessfullytestedprogramstohelp4-and5-year-oldsde-veloptheliteracy,technology,scienceandmathskillsneededtotransformthemintosuperreadingheroes!AnothertimelyLPBproductionthisyearwasKatrina Ten Years After:

A Second Life A Second Chance. TheprogramthatpremieredonLPBrightbefore the10thanniversaryofHurricaneKatrina. It looksbackatthoseill-fateddaysandhow,tenyearslater,thecityofNewOrleanshasachievedwhatseemedalmostunimaginableadecadeago–theresurrec-tionof oneofAmerica’smost beloved cities. Itwas something that noonehadeverwitnessedbefore-imagesofwhatappearedtobethetotaldestructionof amajorAmerican city.ManyofKatrina’s survivorswillnever return toNewOrleans.Butothers—both long-time residents andnewarrivalshavecometogether,determinedtorebuildtheircity—maybebetterthanbefore...becauseit’shome.

EDUCATION LPB’sEducationalServicesDepartmenthadabusy2015.Through

twoDigitalLearningFests,LPBprovidedtwohoursoffun,hands-on,educationalactivitiesforchildren,parents,andteachersusingPBSdigi-talmedia.TheywereheldinEastBatonRougeParishattheFreemanMatthewsHeadStart,andinNewOrleansattheDoloresT.AaronChar-ter School. Each Fest consisted of adult participants learning how toteachchildrenusingdevicessuchasiPads,smartphones,andcomput-ers.The childrenwatched their favorite educationalPBS shows, readbooks,anddidhands-onactivities.LPBprovidedamobilelabofiPadsand laptop computers.A portion of the Festwas devoted to teachingparentshowtoeffectivelyworkwiththeirchildrenusingthePBSme-diaresources.DuringtheremainderoftheFest,parentsinteractedwiththeirchildrenimplementingwhattheylearnedandreceivingsuggestionstoimprovetheirinteractions.Parentsreceivedappsformobiledevices,books,andtake-homematerialsincludingeffectiveparentingtips.

LPBhostedasix-hourhands-onSciGirlsworkshopforlocaleduca-torsattendingthe jointLouisianaScienceTeachersandLouisianaAs-sociationofTeachersofMathConferencetolearnandpracticeprovenstrategiesforengaginggirls(andboys)inSTEM(science,technology,engineeringandmath).SciGirlsisanEmmy-awardwinningPBSKIDStelevisionseriesandwebsitededicatedtochangingthewaymillionsofgirls thinkaboutSTEM.Teachers leftwithaccess toonlineresourcesandcreative ideas for engagingchildren inSTEMsuchasbuildingabouyantdeepseadiver,wiringadoughcreaturetolightuparoom,andmanymorefuneducationalideas.

Using theweeklongOddSquadCampcurriculumassociatedwiththePBSKIDSseriesOdd Squad,LPBpartneredwiththeExxon-MobilYMCA inBatonRouge tooffer a “Be theAgent” summer camp forforty5 to7yearoldchildren.Thecamphelped thechildrendevelopearlymathskillsthroughstructuredgroupactivities,interactivecontent,andgamesandcrafts.

LPBcontinuedthepartnershipwithEntergyofNewOrleanstopro-videmonthlyteacherprofessionaldevelopmenttoteachersat10child-care centers inNewOrleans.Themonthly sessions showed teachershowtoeffectivelyusetheresourcesofthepopularPBSchildren’spro-gramSid the Science Kidtoteachpreschoolershowtothinklikescien-tistsandconductage-appropriatescienceactivities.

WithfundingfromVerizon,LPBpartneredwiththeSulfurLibrarytoprovideDinosaur TrainactivitiesattheLiteracyLibraryKick-offatHarborEdgePavilioninCalcasieuParish.Parentsandchildrenlearnedhow to access thePBSKIDS apps onmobile devices. SuperWHY!madeaspecialappearanceattheevent.

InOctober,LPBwasawardedagrantbytheWalmartFamilyFoun-dation to implement a Success in theWorkplace program.With thisgrant,LPBispartneringwithCatholicCharitiesoftheDioceseofBatonRougetoestablishthecoreinstructionalcontentthatwillupdateclients’workand technologyskills tomeetcurrentemploymentexpectationssuchas,preparingonlineapplicationsandresumes,onlinejobsearches,and computer and technology skills.This programwill help providecareer opportunities for the unemployed in eight parishes in theBa-
