To the Class of 1977:
I t is trad it io n a l on this occasion to m a k e some ponderous statem ent on the future of private education or the state of the world. I plan to depart from this trad iti on.
Why publish a yearbook? This question has been posed by a var ie ty of educational institutions during the past ten years. Rising costs and dec lin ing student interest seem to be the m a in factors prom pting this question. Some schools have decided to drop yearbooks. Others have changed the trad it iona l fo rm at.
I b e l ieve that publishing a yearbook is an im portan t part of the educational process in a secondary school. For m any students it is the first experience at organizing a m a jo r p ro ject. M any skills are invo lved; ed it in g , fund raising, photography, lay out, and budgeting. I t is tru ly a m u lt i - fa c e te d experience. M any resumes c ite yearbook experience and r ig h tfu l ly so.
Yearbooks are im portan t for other reasons. They provide an ongoing chronicle of events and personalities. They a re , in e f fe c t , the o f f ic ia l history of a school. Yearbooks are also a l iv ing rem inder to a lu m n i /a e of the ir educational experiences. Yearbooks from m y various a lm a maters are shelved in my favo r ite bookcase. I often pull them out to rem ind m yself of a nam e or a fa c e recently encountered on a downtown street.
In short, this is an im portan t docum ent. A l l of you w il l benefit from it in m any ways. Treasure it as a rem inder of a very im portan t period in your lives.
Good luck in your future endeavors!

This the beginning of a new day. God has given me this day to use as I w ill. I can waste i t or use it for the good, but what I do today is important because I am exchanging a day of my life fo r i t . When tomorrow comes, this day w ill be gone forever leaving in its place something I have traded fo r i t . I want i t to be gain and not loss; good and not e v il; success and not fa ilu re ; in order that I shall not regret the price I have paid fo r it.

Go p lac id ly am id the noise & haste,& remember
qu ie tly & c lea rly ; and listen to others,
even the dull & ignorant; they too have the ir story.Avoid loud & aggresive persons, they & lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as w ell as
your plans.Keep interested in your own career,
however humble; i t is a real possession in the
changing fortunes o f tim e .Exercise caution in your business
affairs;fo r the world is fu l l of tr icke ry .But le t th is not b lind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideal; and everywhere life is fu l l of
heroism, be yourself,
specia lly, d o jio t fe ign affection. Neither be cynica l about love; fo r in the face of a ll a rid ity &
disenchantment i t is perennial as the grass.
Take k ind ly the counsel o f the years, gracefu lly surrendering the thinqs of
youth.Nurture strength o f sp irit to shield
you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself w ith
imaginings.Many fears are born o f fatigue & loneliness.Beyond a wholesome d iscip line, be gentle w ith yourself.
You are a ch ild of the universe, no less than the trees & the stars; you have a righ t to be here. And whether or not i t is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as
i t should. Therefore be at peace w ith God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors & aspirations, in the noisy confusion o f life keep
peace w ith your soul.W ith a ll its sham, drudgery & broken
dreams, i t is s til l a beautiful world
Yeah that's what they are . . . A carousel An interesting co llection of
animals Only WE are not there Moving endlessly . . .In tim eSuspended from a point Dangling on a string . . . JUST BEING THERE And isn 't that rea lly What life is a il about?
To Mi m i- memories past, present, futurein and around the lakemountains come out of the skyand they stand thereone m ile over w e 'll be thereand laughing too.Tw enty-four before my love and yo u 'll see I ' l l be there w ith you.I w ill remember you Your silhouette w ill charge the view

. . .people often say of H im ; " I 'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don 't accept His c la im to be God." That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was m erely a man and said the sort o f things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would be e ither a luna tic - on a level w ith the man who says he is a poached egg - or else he would be the Devil of H e ll. You must make your choice. Either th is man was, and is, the Son of God; or else a madman or something worse. . Le t us not come w ith any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not le ft that open to us.

mariposas aladas de estrellas, butterflies w ith wings o f s ta rligh t-
how can i express the feelings held deep inside me, locked away, deeper even tha t i dare to searcn:
look in to the m irror of my memoryand watch the ripples o f your own reflections floa ting on the dream-waves of my thoughts, forever to rem ain there, always dear,
and someday, i t may be tha t i w ill findthe words, the concepts worthy to be used- perhaps i w il l m yself create the thoughts, and then invent ideas suitable to express what cannot ever be expressed-
my thanks.pero, hasta que el dia que no vendra, llega a ser,
but, u n til the day that may never come, should come to be, para vosotros dejo atras mis mariposas queridas,
i leave w ith you my beloved butterflies, para que digan lo que no puedo decir.
tha t they may say what i must leave unsaid.

Our Soccer team of 76-77 was a young but very s k illfu l and determ ined squad. Unable to score extensively, but playing dogged defense, the team was able to force a p la y -o ff game w ith Scottsdale Christian to determ ine which team would play against Judson fo r the League Championship. This game was ind ica tive of our efforts throughout the season. Though dom inating play from the opening w histle , we were s til l unable to score, and a fter two scoreless overtimes, the rules demanded a k ick o ff of penalty shots, each team alternating a shooter and goal tender. A fte r e ight shooters from each team had gone to the penalty line , Scottsdale booted the w inning goal. Though i t was a heartbreaking loss, our team, losing only John Gleason via graduation, is looking fo rward to what seems a very good shot a t the League Championship next fa ll.

Upper School varsity basketball team , otherwise known as the K iddie Core a t Phoenix Country Day School, engaged in a rough basketball season. Rough in regards to the won-loss record, but great in re lation to hustle, desire, and dedication. Don Singer, Mark Three Stars, Greg Haus, Bart Hechtman, B il l Leiber, Steve Gates, Todd Gilmore, Stuart Frische, M att Gregory, Brian Rose, George Kokalis, and Randy Steckler were the members o f the varsity basketball team which included Paul Valach as the Team Manager. This was the Advisory Board's firs t fu l l year of operation under its constitution. With the social function of the Advisory Board in m ind, we held an Upper School and M iddle School dance at the beginning of the year w ith the band, Orpheus. In its leg lis la tive position, the Juniors f in a lly won off-campus priveledges.
During the second semester, M r. M onell spoke to us about the role of the Advisory Board. With the aid of this speech, and some im agination. I hope that the ensuing years w ill show the Advisory Board ac tive ly improving the school.
