Dr.George calls ita "tempestin a teapot." Hetold us that thecity ofSanta Ana wasindeed tired ofbeingblamed for theDevil's Wind and may beresponsible for thelarge-scale publicrelations effort behind Santana. However,Dr. George thinks Santana isreally a"corruption by Iowans" and notes thatWebster's calls itSanta Ana because thewind, around Los Angeles at least, originates in the Santa Ana Mountains.Being in theword business, we are inclinedto go With Webster's.

Y " OUR FIRSTglimpse of historic Saltspring will be ust east of Highway127. The Spring is ever-flowing andguarded by two giant m esquite trees, thick andgreen, and always looking totally out of placeagainst the dry, scorched appeara nce of thesurrounding desert and crusty white alkali. On foot, you can follow a narrow trail(northwest) a short distance where you discovera very early rock-house ruin, nestled in to thenatural deep gorge of the ancient Amargo sachannel. The Mexican miners m ay have residedhere. To the south sits Silurian Lake, all dry andskirted with the sites of ancient Indian camps.East of that and a little north are mo re adoberuins. North of Salt Spring lie the be autifulDumont Sand D unes. And to the west is therugged Avawatz Range. Amethyst crystals andgeodes are found up and down nearbyKingston Wash.It is said that the Devil controls the Am argosaRiver. He causes it to flow underground. Only atinfrequent intervals does the bed of the river riseabove the surface, and of this beware, especiallyin stormy weather. Enjoy Salt Spring and mayeach step you take over her old trails be alw ayshaunted by Breyfogle's lost gold and theMexicans'hidden treasure. EJ1

By Kirk PocanAmong California's scenic high-ways, there is probably none moreinspired than the stretch of U.S. 39 5that straddles the Owen s Valley be-tween the White Mou ntains and theeastern Sierra Nevada escarpment. And wha t's more, it leads one to BigPine where it intersects withWestgard Pass Road (C-168), gate-way to the forest of the ancientbristlecone pines.Asyour vehicle wheezes up the"pass" to its 9,000-foot peak and itsmeeting with White Mou ntain Road, which in turn leads to thepre-biblicalforest, stop and look out atthe panoram a of life zones that un-fold below you.

    eglegSmith'sLost Gold "In t e rv i e w w ith C h o r al P e p p e r

Early in 1965 an anonymous writer sent an article to Dese r tMa gazine stating that he had, during the past ten years, collected$314,660 in black gold nuggets in an area "within 30 miles of theSalton Sea." This article, which was published in March of that year, wasfollowed by other letters answering qu estions from readers, eachaccom panied by at least one of the writer's nuggets in o rder toauthenticate his correspondance. All of his letters were signed "Fromthe Man Who Found Peg leg's Black Gold"and each was mailed froma different location. With some letters he sent photographs. Theletters were also published in the magazine between 1965 and 1968,and the nugge ts he sent were displayed in Desert's office for readersto examine. Because the Peg legBlack Gold legend is as important tothe lore of the Southern California desert as the Lost Dutchman Minein the Superstitions is to Arizona, proof that the black goldactually existed and w as still to befound made a substantial impactupon modern desert history. To recap and update this fascinating
