BADGES-DANGLES -ROVERS A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTS HELLO! - Hope you all enjoyed your holidays and and all the excitement and preparations that make them so special. Our dancing year promises to be
special to - something for everyone. January 29th is the date for the Class Level Mid-term Dance at Montville HS from 2 - 5 PM. This is usually a great fun dance for the students, squaring up with strangers and ending with having made new friends. Will YOU be thete to extend an enthusiastic welcome to them? For our seasoned dancers, and this includes our Al-A2 dancers too, same place but from 7 - 10 PM our 3rd ANNUAL BOOSTER BALL will be held. Callers will be Dick Pasvolsky and Manny Amor with McLaughlins on rounds. As we approach BOOSTER MONTH it is especially fitting that our ball be held at this time. Let's have a great It.tendance and keep Grand Square out of the ::ED. We all are looking forward to greeting many old riends. We have started our "Visitation Tour" of the many clubs com-prising our Association. Many times we hear the remark "It's a long ride from the Delaware Water Gap, and must take quite a while". True - but time and distance are immaterial when you are visiing S/D friends and anticipate making new ones. It is always a pleasure to share a square with you. Several constructive comments and ideas have been presented to us by various club members. Such suggestions are always welcome. Enthusiasm seems to be very prevelant in all clubs, which is a good sign. The hope of our Association is that the clubs will continue the visitations started during our anniversary year, even though, at the present time, there is no reward other than the pleasure derived from being with other dancers. COMMUNICATION - a very important link between the clubs and the Association. Your delegate is an integeral part of your club, and the executive board and we ask each president to give the delegate time to make a bri_ef report. When any member of the Executive Board of the Association -attends your dance, won't you please recognize him and invite him/her to say a few words - just a few. CONVENTION TIME - BALTIMORE in '84 ! How fortunate we are to -,ave this years convention right in our own back yard! Many dancers in this area are working deligently to make this one of the best conventions ever. If you have never been to one -this is your opportunity - it is an exciting experience, and so close to home. have YOU signed up yet???

"What does it take to pu.t on a National Squaite Dance Convention?" Why dou one need a minimum oA there uealt.6 to p4evake AOA a 3 clay event?"
Yes, the NSDC is different from any other convention. It is the largest convention in the WORLD put on completely by volunteers!!! Put on by people who have regular 40 hr/week jobs! And most of them will tell you, it's not work-it's
400► F U N !!! You get to meet interesting people. Most conventioneers are in meetings all day,
and are looking for entertainment at night. S/Ders move around from one event to another, day and night, always needing a cold drink, or something to eat. (The hardest job any convention planning group has is to convince
the restaurants to be prepared with LOTS of food! S/Ders want to shop for attire and accessories; they want to learn how square dancing is pro-moted in other areas; they want new patterns and ideas for sewing; they want to dance, dance , dance...but they also want to see the city in which the convention is being held, and sometimes tour that state as well.
The committees in charge must provide the facilities for all this -plus the security and safety and information to handle all this and then some PLUS the full dance program from 9 am until 1 Al..!!
Along the way there are check points to see how things are progressing. The National Executive Committee, made up of past Convention Chaitmen-also serving without any remuneration) meet with the local people to give a guiding hand and then about a year before the Convention, the entire NEC comes in and really looks over the facilities and all the planning up to that point. This culminates in the convention kick off dance- which many of our area attended last March in Baltimore.
This coming February all the Baltimore committees will meet with the convention General Chairman, Peter J & Jennie Zukauskas to evaluate progress and plan accordingly. While NNJ at present has no really good place to hold a convention of this magnitude (30,953 were in Louisville last year!) nevertheless our area wholeheartedly is supporting their efforts.

We have received a communication from Joan/Ed Kozlowski tell-ing of their plans to coordinate a fund raising project to help in the refurbishing of the STATUE OF LIBERTY. There are several S/D groups that are co-sponsoring the idea along with hundreds of schools across the country. Ed is making arrange-ments to secure a tax exempt number for all donations, to designate a bank as fiduciary, to secure endorsements from ROUNDALAB,LEGACY, CALLERLAB, the 2 National S/D Publications and to conduct a six month program to raise money culminating
in the presentation of a check at NSDC in Baltimore next June. In the meantime, NJ efforts to raise monies are being coordinated by
the Square Dance Council of New Jersey (SDCNJ) representatives Betty/Frank Olier (45 Oakridge Avenue,Nutley,NJ 07110 201-661-1423. The Oliers, along with the NNJSDA 3rd VP's (Chuck/MaryAnne Mosseau) suggest - after the GRAND SQUARE Booster Drive is concluded, all who wish to make club or individual donations to the project, channel their contributions thru the Oliers. Careful records will be kept and all who donate will receive due recognition. (The Oliers are also in the process of coordinating a state wide outdoor square dance in July, within Miss Liberty's view,....more on this in another issue.)
Death did not take the holidays. Our area extends its sympathy to callers Peggy (& 'ill) Heyman and Fred (6, Sonia) Weiner on the loss of a parent - and to Mary Gorham on the passing of her husband Tom. Although Staten Island residents, Tom and Mary had made a lot of NJ friends during the many years, they'd been dancing. Always ready with a helping hand, Tom and Mary were presidents of Richmond Dancer-and Colonial Squares, served the Association as delegates, and were R/D Advisors in 1972-73. We will all miss him.

assisted by Frank/Betty Olier & Frank/Helen Cavanaugh. Your NM has agreed to furnish 225 floor spotters for the Thursday evening dancing halls. As explained in previous
Liaison from NNJSDA to the convention are the Tirrells
issues, rather than have a caller waste valauble time try-ing to fill in sets, this is the Floor Spotter's job.
When the Floor Spotter sees an incomplete set, the F.S. stands in that set raising the 3 foot lollypop type sign so dancers entering the hall can quickly jump in & the dancing can commence. You work in 2 hour shifts with a number of other dancers in each hall...so you can sign up with your friends. Sign up now with the Oliers so you can be in the hall of your choice.
Would you believe we have a number of displaced Jersey-ites and New Yorkers who remember the fun from when the NSDC was in Atlantic City ('77) who've already signed up from Nebraska, Florida, Vermont::: To all those now in classes, there will be plenty of dancing at the program (new word for LEVEL) you enjoy - so send inour regis- tration blank for Baltimore in '84 NOW and then sign up with the Oliers. (And then plan to stay for the LEGACY After Party from 11 PM to 1AM in theARena-Civic Center.

2nd VP's of the NNJSDA, Alberta/ Harry VanLuvender, have the respon-sibility of answering all requests/ questions concerning the NJ official state costume. They have sent out 45 kits as of this typing and would have sent more except the Kelly, or Christmas, green fabric became scarce during the holidays! (All we kept seeing at the dances was red, RED, RED!) It also takes about an entire evening to trace a pattern, so if there are any dancers who would care to volunteer to help Alberta in her tracings, she would welcome the help.
grtt rit is./c sko-t ;:5, Write or call - 70 Miller Road in
Kinnelon, NJ 07405 201-838-3392. All the NNJSDA Board are pleased with the enthusiastic response the
dancers have shown concerning the state costume...not only in NNJ, but in the other sections of NJ as well as our neighbors in New York and out in PA. We look for slot of dancers in the GRAND MARCH at the Baltimore Con-vention in their green and white outifts. (Dancers do not have to wear the state outfit, to attend the convention....the state outfit is purely a voluntary costume worn by dancers to show the state in which they do much of their dance activities.) The state costume is also available at some of the S/D shops...either as a complete costume or as separates. The star is to be placed so as to designate the home of the dancer - and always provokes a question on our PA & NY dancers as to why the star is not in the state!!! The green overskirt is optional.

The SQUARE DANCE COUNCIL OF NEW JERSEY (SDCNJ) was officially born October 30, 1983 in Edison, NJ when representatives from various Square & Round Dance organizations within NJ met and after a thorough discussion formally adopted a constitution establishing the SDCNJ.
The purpose of this organization is "to promote Square Dancing in all its forms. Square dancing is defined to include square dancing, round dancing, contra dancing, clogging, etc.. To establish a line of com- munication from Associations, Federations, Councils, and non-aligned clubs to a recognized body so that various opinions may make statewide decisions. Each individual organization shall be self sufficient and the Square Dance Council of New Jersey shall not interfere in the internal operations of the member organization. To provide Education to further the growth & enjoyment of the S/D activity throughout the state. To encourage cooper- ation among clubs, Associations, Councils, Federations and other groups involved or interested in the Promotion of the S/D activity. To present Square Dancing to the general public as a wholesome and enjoyable recrea- tion." Elected president was Frank Cavanaugh (NNJSDA); Vice-president George Dock (CNJSDA); Secretary Peg Tirrell (NNJRDLC): and Treasurer Donna Anderson (CCNJ). Plans for the future include - creation of a flyer to promote square dancing statewide; publicity to acquaint all with the formation of the SDCNJ; setting up a committee to coordinate efforts for a state-wide benefit dance for refurbishing the Statue of Liberty (Chair-man Betty/Frank Olier); the investigation of a State-wide Festival possibly as early as 1985 (Chairman Nancy/Max Nosker); and creation of a state wide calendar of S/D related events.
The next meeting of this group will be Sunday afternoon March 25, 1984 at 1 PM in the little brown house behind the white church in Edison, NJ. The meeting is open to interested dancers, but only representatives from dues paying organizations may vote.

ministration expenditures. The deficit usually runs between $500 & $600 per issue. Other than this one appeal, GRAND SQUARE is a FREE service of your Association. The staff thanks you for your thoughtful support.
Did you notice on page 2, at long last an Associate Editor has been appointed by our NNJSDA President and confirmed by your elected officers. we are thrilled to welcome MARY ANNE (who can type up a storm) & CHUCK (with his ruler & pen & ink) MOSSEAU aboard.

The National S/D Convention in Baltimore has 2 mottos - "Capture a Maryland Memory" and "It's A Grand Old Flag". Behind Frank/Nan Habersberger & Helen/Frank Cavanaugh is the flag Peter J & Jennie Zukauskas (Baltimore General Chairman) presented to the NNJSDA which had been flown over Fort McHenry. The Zukauskas' are now busy making arrangements for a special flag to be flown over every state capitol before the NSDC opens! So one fine day last fall Frank Cavanaugh & Burt Caplan travel-led to the NJ state capitol in Trenton to ful-fill this wish...and then sent the flag on to
Connecticut. Another reason to be in Baltimore this June - to see for yourselves just what Peter J & Jennie plan to do with this special flag.

BEE SHARPS OF SOMERVILLE -- Bnidgewatet, N.J. (4) 1 8 3 Satunday4 Someuet County Vo Tech H/S
The S/D year is flying by. Since becoming members of the Association, we have been raided by three clubs and several dancers have had their Pa-
trons book signed. It's a good feeling to belong. Our fall dances were well attended. Will Larson called a super dance, while Roy Leiber had our feet really moving with his quick pace calling. Merri-Eights and Somerset Hills swelled our ranks when they raided with better than three squares each in early Nov. We ended the month of Nov. with Buck Fish and his charming wife. Buck challenged the group with some all position moves. Hill City was on hand that night with three squares. Our first Bee Sharp S/D class is doing very well. Twenty two persons attend each Monday night at the Old York School. Ralph Stapenell, club caller and teacher is keep-
ing their enthusiasm high and we look forward to their joining the club this spring. We hope 1984 is a great year for everyone...a year filled with love, and peace and lots of square dancing.

The holidays have come and gone leaving many happy square dancing mem-ories. As is our custom, we welcomed our class to our annual Christmas dance. They've come a long way since September! New Years Eve brought another successful party and dance. Our thanks go to the Verstraetes and their super committee, the Connollys, Schippes, Matthews and McComiskeys for making the evening such a delightful one. Now we are looking forward to our monthly Class Level dances January thru March with callers Paul Brody and Bill Heyman. This year they'll be at the Church of the Annun-ciation.in Paramus. Parking is excellent and we urge dancers of levels of experience to join us. The enthusiasm of new dancers is contagious!
We had a successful raid on Tenafly Squares and are hoping to visit many more clubs during the coming months - watch for us! We'd be happy to have you come and dance with us too.

Christmas has come and gone and the New Year is upon us. We wish for you the best in 1984. Our Nov. As we didn't have a dance in Dec., we missed you. Why not join us in Jan. for our "Snow Ball" dance? You would enjoy dancing with us.

ELSE. His passing creates a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. He was with us a long time & did more than his share of work. Whenever there was a job to be done, a floor to sweep, chairs to put away, or dance with be-ginners, his name was always mentioned, "Let SOMEONE ELSE do it." Now that Someone Else is gone, I wonder what our clubs will do. When you are asked to help out, please remember that you cannot depend on SOMEONE ELSE any more. We hope that everyone's holidays were happy ones, and that by now you are enjoying the winter's dancing schedules. Colonials will not have a dance on February 23rd, but we'll be dancing regularly on all other Thurs-day nights. All C-I dancers are most cordially invited to come and dance
with us. Want to know some more about us? Well, we're not related to each other (for the most part), but if the caller says so, we're Once Removed. We're not a group to meditate, but we do know how to Levitate. 11-7767fee we serve is instant, but on the dance floor we Percolate. Here we are...starting 1984 on a real up beat after a successful Fall Season. We had good crowds with great callers. Cooperation in the re-freshment area was good and the committees performed well.
We began January with Joe Fioretti. This will be followed by a Pie Night Dance with Bob Benner as our caller. All Country Promenaders (and anyone else who likes to bake pies) are requested to bring one pie to the dance. Our last February dance will be a Students' High/Low affair on alternating tips, and will feature dancing with balloons?
Our annual Dinner Dance will be held Sunday evening in March at Krainski's Hall in Sayreville. Mike Cleary will call. This is a ticket dance. For information and reservation call Elaine Gracchi at 752-7004.
So far this season we have conducted 2 raids and are looking for other clubs to visit. Come on out and promenade in our country! 201-780-2366 18

"Double, double, toil and trouble, fire burn, and cauldron bubble," chanted Macbeth's witches. Thank heavens they didn't come to our Hallow-een dance, as all of us would have fainted dead away. A wicked witch did come, complete with a green made-up face. Great make-up job, Virginia. Many other costumed characters came also, including my favorite Sheik.
Busy, busy, couple, the Oilers, Frank/Betty are looking high and low, and far and wide for floor spotters for Thursday, PM at the Baltimore Con-vention. Please volunteer, make them happy. The Oliers also write our zippy and thought provoking Club Newsletter, aptly named "SPAN OF EVENTS". Margy Cox submitted the winning title. Nice play on words. Talent cer-tainly abounds in our club.
Christmas dances come and go. Some memorable and some forgettable. Ours is always special and to be remembered, as our students are always invited and they always attend. It is such a pleasure to see the wonder-ment in their eyes at all the goings on. One wonders who's enjoying it more, them or us. Fran Cashill, Class Chairperson and her Assistant, Eloise Fagan were positively beaming at their charges, and telling all what a super class they are. We all think you're pretty super too, Fran and Eloise. Santa (we all know him as Roger) came to distribute grab bag gifts and Jules' and Dick's calling and duets had everyone running to square up.
Thanks to all dancers who have come to dance with us and to those who intend to, any 2nd and 4th Friday.

A Happy New Year to all I Our Christmas Dance got us all in the holiday mood and spirit. It was well attended with our student class join- ing in the fun. Our New Year's Eve Dance was another success. It is an event everyone eagerly looks forward to and this year it was under the capable leadership of Evelyn and Bert Boucher. Hurrahs to you both for a job well done.
It's hard to believe that we are half-way through our dancing season but we look forward to our Treasurer's Ball in January and dancing to the talents of Bob Tarrant, Joe Fioretti, Manny Amor and of course, our own Paul Brody with Jeanne on rounds. Come dance with us -- we're always happy to see you and you'll have a good time!

Even with holidays and busy schedules, people still are finding time to enjoy square dancing. Other activities must wait and priorities must be arranged so that the good fun of dancing can continue. While people joke that it is always possible to identify a square dancer's house (lawns needing care, houses requiring painting, cars that should be washed), we all recognize that a well-organized life places square dancing first. To that end, we remind you that we have outstanding guest callers this year: Dec., Joe Landi; Jan., Mike Foley; and May, Joe Landi. Three fantastic callers have agreed to serve as guest callers for 1984/85. Specifically
they are Rusty McLean, George Potts, & Clint McLean. With our regulars Z. these quests, we should be able to continue our great fun square dancing. Why not come and join us?

A club badge says a lot. It tells the world which club you belong to, the club's location and what your name is. Be proud of your club - wear your badge where people can see it. The Hill City badge is green and white and has been for oany years. There are two, however, that are black and gold, worn by Blanche and Iry Weaver. When you see them on the dance floor ask them why they insist on being different.
Four squares of class members are working towards gaining a Hill City badge. Bob Benner is patiently molding them into another outstanding class of dancers. To help the class make the transition to square dance attire, Hill City will hold a clothing exchange at the class level Valen-tine dance in February. Experienced square dance clothes are invited. Barrels will be furnished for on the spot donation.
Last year's graduates have been dancing so well it's hard to believe that they only graduated last spring. Come join in our fun and meet some good new dancers.

The friendships that eeveiop between square dancers were surely at the
October dance when Kay Ballantine was presented with a beautiful clock/ plaque in memory of Jim, her late husband. Kay's tears of love joined the hearts of all present in warm rememberance. Their contribution to our club and square dancing will remain with us despite their absence.
A special salute to Frank Bremer. Not only an angel extraordinaire (6 years in a row) but the talented man who makes our posters, arranges our flyers and ads and contributes his time and efforts in all those big and small ways that make Hix and Chix enjoyable.
George/Mary Lou Baurhenn, Demo chairman, picked a beautiful spring-like day for the really fine demonstration they arranged at the annual Clifton, N.J. Picnic. Stan Sikora calling to a Hix and Chix square on an outdoor stage had the audience interested and smiling. Stan's warm thank you/commendation letter was much appreciated.
Marshall Flippo, the dynamite national caller in a small package, called our special with liquid smooth but challenging choreography for which he is famous. We noticed that John Kaltenthaler brought a van-load from Pa. and our own Dick Pasvolsky together with or Der outstanding call-ers were there. What better tribute than from your peers! The 46 squares not only enjoyed the great voice and beat of Marshall Flippo but were cued through rounds by Both the Shearwoods and the McLaughlins. The square dance season is once again in full swing. This year Kings Squares has embarked on a very active raid program. Our intent is to ex-pose our dancers to many different callers, enabling them to get valuable dancing experience. Equally as important, it will give them the opportuni-ty to meet and get acquainted with many new friends. We encourage other clubs to raid our dances as well, where a friendly, congenial atmosphere and excellent dancing can be found.
In September we raided Country Promenaders where 26 couples enjoyed dancing to the calling of Clint McLean. In October, 8 couples danced to the unique style of Bruce Busch at Staten Squares. In November we raided Ramapo Squares with 8 couples to give our advanced dancers an opportunity to improve their skills. In January, we'll be at Alemo's dancing to Ginny Reaske. We look forward to the participation of all our dancers in these raids. Charlotte & Irving Mandel are Raid Chairmen.
Enjoy the New Year in good health and happiness. (AD on page 35 ) Catherine/George Hughu 212-763-7405

We've been having a very enjoyable time of dancing this Fall, and each dance has had a different theme which has added to the interest. Some of our members are very ingenuious and dress accordingly. We've had a Harvest Dance, Pumpkin Dance, 50's Dance and Thanksgiving Dance. It all adds interest to the evening, but most important are the square dancing and the round dancing. Where else do you meet so many wonderful, happy, lively people under one roof? In addition we have delicious snacks and nice door prizes at each dance, so come and join us whenever you can.

Lakeland had their Halloween Dance in October which was a great suc-cess. Special fun dangles were available for those who participated in the dances with a ghost, dancing while eating apples, and dancing in the dark with flashlights. The Thanksgiving Special was another enjoyable evening. There were pies galore. Decorations for both specials were all over the dance hall, and it brightened the night for everyone who attended
Lakeland hopes to see many people out for our specials coming up in the near future. In January, Ted Knauss will be our guest caller. Feb- ruary has our Valentine's Dance, and March our St. Patrick's Day Special.
Lakeland Squares, along with Bob Mitchell, will be having a class level dance in March. Lakeland invites all new students to attend. We encourage everyone to come and join our Mainstream Club. Dancing is fun and our members are Friendly!! Happy Dancin g .

Leisure Squares are off and running this fall. The general meeting and covered dish supper was held in Oct. at R Own Lake Stbg. with 40 attending. At our club dance in Nov. , all dancers were treated to sun-daes and cookies. Dalt and the Blooms helped us dance off all those
calories. Three couples and a single were given their club pins re- cently. They are Joe & Sue Geczi, Carl & Norma Smith, Chet & Lois Walker and Ann Birmingham. Also in Nov., two squares raided Warren Wheelers. A lot of fun and so good to see old friends. All our members enjoyed dancing to Danny T Bow, a new caller to some. Our Turkey Trot dance was a huge success with Warren Wheelers raiding us. During the evening a turkey was won by one of our guests. Then a SURPRISE! Lou and I were escorted to our president Bill Smith at the mike. There we were given a plaque which said we have a life membership in Leisure Squares. A large circle formed and wished us well. Three of our couples arrived at the dance looking tan and rested. The Gillmans and Higgins returned from Hawaii and the Millers from Mexico. Glad to see them home safely. Dalt wound up the evening with three singing calls and everyone went home happy.

To raid is to be raided. A simple concept that seems simply to work. We may not always visit with two squares but our club is fast becoming a raiding bunch and I'm sure that increased attendance at our dances is a result. A raid by the Country Promenaders, at our last dance is a case in point. We will soon be donning our new raid vests, designed by the Bloemekes and Sensbachs, and will sally forth to raid - perhaps - your club. We should also have our jackets.
Our club continues to enjoy successful dances due in no small measure to our fine guest callers and our round dance leaders. Our guest callers promise us more of the same for the rest of the season. We have a number of special dances planned. See our ad for St. Patrick's Day. Our pres-idents ball, with Manny Amor, calling will be held in Feb. when all club presidents are invited to dance free. That will also be our pie night.
Our class is doing very well under the headmastership of Bob Benner. The help and interest of the many angels at each session is obviously appreciated by both the students and Bob. They are further encouraged by the fact that some of the angels are last years graduates. When you come out to help as an angel you will find the students a lot of fun to dance with. What better credentials can they have than that they are future square dancers? Best wishes for a healthy and happy New Year.

We teceime Letter "Why must we be bored with dull songs when there
are countless numbers of beautiful, rousing, exotic, tingling, exciting, melodious & nostalgic songs. Who cares if the song is as old as the hills or brand new as long as it sounds good We wish the callers would be more selective. There is no need to settle for a so-so number. If there is any question on the quality of a song, don't do it. Why not the best! Hats off to those callers who do make square dancing
more fun be being choosy with great "singers":"Name available upon request "We have a new Quarterly Selection - "Break the Square Down". No com-
mittee devised this one, it is strictly a caller creation. Too many cal-lers, out of boredom, perversity or cuteness, will deliberately call in such a manner that squares, including those with 8 veteran dancers, are bound to break down. Not occasionally but frequently. The operative word in "square dancing" is "dancing". It connotes grace, rhythm, and continual movement. It does not include standing around, looking at each other in confusion, forming lines and waiting. Some callers find this amu-sing. If we wanted laughs that badly, we could stay home IN watch a sit-com. One caller claims that the same old calls or combinations become boring, hence, the trick calls. If callers think dancers get bored that easily, let them think again. There is nothing so popular as an uncompli-cated, rhythmic singing call such as EL PASO. No tricks there, no boredom just grace and the chance to say when it's over, "Good tip."
Some callers reserve the third tip of the evening for trick calls, which they workshop first. That's fine. It keeps the callers from being bored and limits the tricks to that one time. For all other tips, call 'em straight. Keep the squares moving. We promise not to get bored." Sincereli. /ours, John A. Martin - Cranford, NJ

we would like to extend a big thank you to Fred Fields for stepping in on a two hour notice to call at our November dance. Fred did a really fine job and saved a lot of dancers from being disappointed that night.
Our "Turkey Trot" and "Holiday Fling" dances were a big success during the holiday season, but we're not resting on our laurels. We've sched-uled several exciting winter and spring dances with our regular caller, Glenn Cooke, and guest callers; Mike Foley, Will Larsen, John Marshall, Bruce Busch and Red Bates.
There seems to be a rumor floating around that Princeton Squares will not conduct a summer dance program at the Nottingham Ballroom. That ru-mor is only half true. The summer dance program, which has been very suc-cessful, will definitely be continued; only the location is changed. The new location will be the Rider College Student Center, Rt. 206, Trenton. The new location is very large, air-conditioned, and centrally located. We can thank our past presidents, Joan and Bernie Lechner for making such great arrangements and for lining up several good callers.

Looking back on 1983, we hope it was a happy and productive year for all square dancers, and that 1984 will be even more pleasurable and ful- filling. By now you must know that Ramapo, 33 years old and still going strong, is the super club for advanced dancing in the whole area. If you're not 100 per cent completely, thoroughly, and totally convinced, we urge you to put us to the test. All you have to do to become an ardent Ramqpo fan is to attend our forthcomina dances.

The first special of the season, with Mike Cleary, was held in Nov. Dangles and door prizes were given out for the occasion, and fun was had by all. We are planning future specials throughout the season. They will be announced by flyers and in the GRAND SQUARE.
Margaret Brownell, our club secretary and reporter, has had serious heart surgery, and apparently is having an extended convalescence. I am sure she will appreciate any "well wishing", as a stay in a hospital is a lonely one. Any card can be sent c/o Reelers, P.O. Box 22, Landing, New Jersey 07850, and it will be forwarded to her.
Instead of a club caller, we are having guest callers. Each caller has his own style, so expect a great variety of dancing in the near future. Grace/Walt Pennie are teaching the ROUND OF THE MONTH and other nice dances to Round Dancers. They start promptly at 7:30 and go on to 8:oo. We need more Round Dancers, and those who turn out, find the teach rewarding. We hope to see you there.

Boy, the holidays sure did burst upon us in a hurry! Our Christmas
party/dance on the 10th was a marvelous success - chaired by Bill/Donna Anderson, the committee did an outstanding job - each of the ladies pres-ent went home with a "cherry" magnet for messages on the refrigerator, and a special hand decorated Christmas tree ornament - how many hours did TM project take? Betsy Gotta & Ralph Stapenall & Shirley put us through our paces earlier in November. We're looking forward to seeing many of our friends in January & February, including the CCNJ student special in February. Our new hall is bright and cheery & the sound is great.
Our only sad note this holiday season was the loss of Tom Gorham - we will miss his helping hand and guidance. Our hearts go to Mary & his family. We're also very glad to see Jean Laird up and around again. Cheerio. (AD on page 22) The Andeiusoms 212-727-5141

In December we celebrated two birthdays...our 5th and prematurely, one a couple thousand years earlier. With this milestone under our belts, we can be sure of offering our guests some of the best callers and friendliest dancers around. Our November dance was another milestone. Joe Fioretti called to 12 squares, including a raiding group from Sussex Spinners in their black and white outfits, they looked as great as they danced.
We are constantly learning new things about our hall. Now we find we can turn the lights from ''Look How Good We Are" to "It's Dark Enough To Hide Our Goofs", and the big picture windows offer a warm welcome from our parking lot. There are book, fruit, record, candy and other "of the month" clubs, but our Raid Chairman Trudy/Bob Faillace seem to be starting a "RAID of the MONTH Club". We have raided Lakeland Squares and Belles & Beaux, and at this writing Hanover Squares is on our hit list. January, February and March raids are in the works, and our prayer chain is working on the weather. Your reporter met and danced with the German dancers this summer, and heard the glowing reports from Belles & Beaux contingent that returned the visit. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the whole world could join Square Dancers in spirit, if not on the floor, then "Peace On Earth, Good Will Toward Men", would be a reality instead of a seasonal dream. SOMERSET HILLS SQUARES -- Ba4king Rid N.J. N.J. + 2 g 4 Tuezdayt. Ptabytetian Church, Eaot dak StAeet
HAPPY NEW YEAR from all the members of Somerset Hills. Our club has been very busy right up until Christmas holidays, dancing, doing demonstra-tions and raiding area clubs. Our first demo of the season was at the Rose City Festival and we continued to do demonstrations through mid-December. We had 10 demos in that short span of time. We have also been very busy raiding other S/D clubs and to date have raided 5 area clubs. We have had tremendous enthusiasm 4 participation from all our members. At this time we would like to invite all the clubs to come visit us. We are sure you will find the atmosphere very friendly and of course we cannot say enough about the delicious refreshments. Hope to see you guys and gals at one of our upcoming events. HAPPY DANCING!

STATEN SQUARE SET -- G4anitevitte, Staten Taand, N.V. (4- ) 1 8 3 Sattadao Methodist Chutch, T 840 Fotest Avenue
The Lucarini award, the highest honor Staten Square Set can convey to a deserving couple in the NNJSDA is not given lightly. The requirements are stringent, indeed in the entire NNJSDA, no suitable candidate was found in 1978. Rather than lower the standards, the award was not be- stowed. Hence it is an honor to welcome Harry/Rita Childs as this the 13th recipients. The award is traditionally given on our anniversary. We are 35 years young. With the enthusiasm our hard working committees per-sue to make each dance more successful than the previous one, the warmth that comes when individuals team up to make any job easier and more ful- filling, Staten will see another 35 years of Square Dancing in the manner with which we are accustomed - Fun & Friendship.
The four clubs on the island worked beautifully together in the past. The nine Roundups and demonstration tips come to mind. Now another first. It was a pleasure to welcome and dance with the new RIOS class in Decem-ber at our Christmas dance. R I 0 S - Richmond Dancers, Isle Squares, Ocean Waves & Staten Square Set combined forces to teach the newest S/Ders the basic movements and to build confidence in themselves. We eagerly look forward to April when we welcome you into the club in our traditional graduation ceremony. Mark your calendars for another great dance coming in January - the Winter Wonderland Special with Bruce Busch calling the squares and Joan Newman on Rounds. Joan/Don Abtamson 609 - 443 - 3054

SUSSEX SPINNERS -- SpaAta, N.J. ( ) 2 6 4 FAiday4 Atpine Schoot, Andovelt Road
Winter is near, & once again, the Spinners continue their success with
d fuii slate of events. The Apple Harvest dance, with all the signs of fall, lent to an atmosphere reminiscent of precious times spent together -times of fun & friendship during the most beautiful part of the year. And while the seasons slowly changed hands, the Spinners did also as both the Mainstream and Plus program classes forged ahead to become better dancers.
Further activities for the Spinners included a Mystery Surprise Night which was indeed both a mystery and a surprise. The Presidents, Stan Lach & Martha Strait, honored club caller, John Kaltenthaler, and entertained the other members with a roast. Clearly, the evening proved to be most enjoyable and even John's wife, Freddie, got into the act. Other high- lights on the calendar included the Halloween Costume Ball with a parade, prizes, and trick or treating; the Dangles Night Dance attended by many visiting clubs; club raids to Kuntry Kuz'ns & Spinning Wheels of Wayne; and the New Year's Eve party and Christmas Student Dance were all part of the celebrations. But in the midst of an extensive schedule, the fall featured an unsurpassed grandeur of two weddings. Ann Tulp & John Lovatt and Alice Tulp and Bud Goodell are now Sussex Spinners couples - best wishes for wonderful lives spent together! Happy New Year dancers - come see us soon. SWINGIN' STARS -- Teaneck, N.J. ( ) 2nd Sattaday Community Church-coxnek Etm/Notth Stteetz
We have become a moveable feast. We started the year at Petruska Park, which confused some people, but by November a lot of dancers had found their way there, December found us back at Maywood Avenue School for a farewell dance. Everyone knows where that is & everyone was there.
Starting in JANUARY we will be at a brand new location - did you notice it in our masthead? We are now at the Community Church of Teaneck at the southwest corner of Elm and North Streets, near Cedar Lane. Our ad and flyer will list the outstanding guest callers....and the flyer has a map to guide you to our new location. As always, the Shearwoods will be there to start the rounds at eight, our refreshment committee will provide those succulent goodies and all your friends (remember, a strange square dancer is just a friend you haven't met yet) will be waiting to dance with you. So you all come.

November dance Yeas relly a PatrPatriotic Glance !!! A!! the dan-crs were dressed in outfits of red, white and blue - making it difficult for Fred Weiner to keep track of who the partners were. A raiding party from Star Thru Squares (from Lakewood,NJ!) made it one of the biggest dances in a long time. The December dance with Paul Brody was the time of the Christmas Cookie Dance with plenty of goodies to celebrate the holiday season and a visit from the members of the New Milford Tenderfeet.
We're all looking forward to more happy dances in the New Year....and by the time you read this will have had our first Chinese Auction Dance. If you haven't danced with us, why not make a New Year's Resolution to visit our next dance. We're sure you'll return for more enjoyable evenings of relaxed dancing. Ekyan Schoot, IS/Look-aide Avenue
Were you with us in October when the Rellingers were awarded their life membership pins? We can't think of a more deserving couple. In November 14 squares divied up and devoured about 30 pies! Many laughs and calories were had by all. The Hix and Chix pulled a raid and 33 of their members assisted in the feasting. In December Tenafly Squares raided us and joined in the holiday festivities. Many of our members welcomed in the New Year with the traditional party at the Tirrells where once again Fred Weiner called the squares and Doc cued rounds. In January we're calling all NNJ-SDA Delegates to a dance commemorating their services. Hope to see you then...and at our subsequent dances. Happy New Year to All

WARREN WHEELERS -- Pont M N.J. ( + ) 2 6 4 Thuu iday Mans School, Rt 57
By the time this issue goes to press we will all hopefully have had a wonderful holiday season and looking forward to a bright new year. We
have been kept quite busy with our late fall and early winter schedule. We have had two raids, one to the Kittatinny Rangers and the other to Leisure Squares. Our demo at Heath Village was certainly appreciated by all the senior citizens there. Our Halloween Best Masks competition found Sheri Bacon & Ray Raimondo of our club & Bruce/Marilyn Auriemmo of Sussex Spinners in the winners circle. At our Thanksgiving Dance, Mark/ Lise Bipper were the winner of our turkey give away dinner. All Warren Wheelers extend to all our S/D friends a warm & sincere wish for a Happy New Year and an open invitation to come and square up with us in '84.

WEST MILFORD FLUTTERWHEELS Newfoundland, N.J. (+) 1 S 3 Ftkday Pakadise Knoll School, Patadise Road "Now we are Six." Although Christopher Robin and his friends were with
us only in spirit, many of our SID friends celebrated with us live & W.M. Flutterwheels is feeling quite grown up. We have enjoyed the fall & lots of good dancing. In November we raided Spinning Wheels and in Dec. Hix & Chix. Bob Mitchell called our Anniversary Dance in January and Dick Pasvolsky led our Christmas Dance at which our students, and students from other nearby clubs, were our guests. We had a great time and look forward to greeting more of the "undergraduates" at our class dances in the next 3 months. We want to get to know these new dancers as soon as possible.
Earlier this past season, we had 3 guest callers at Flutterwheels: Frannie Heintz from MA & Bill Wagner & Ralph Stapenell from PA. Outstand-ing callers, all, they provided us with evenings of interesting and excell-ent dancing. So with our spirits high, and, we hope, snow - not so high, we are into winter. It is never cold dancing, however, so come out and join us when you can. The good times are not all behind us: we've got exciting things ahead. We wish each and everyone a Happy New Year & happy dancing. (AV on Ha44y/Otive GAaveman 201-697-4075

WESTERN WHEELERS -- Pane Ridge, N.J. ) 2 Wednesday; 4 Sattaday eongtegationat Chunch, 131 Pascaek Road
As the holidays fade into history, we certainly have a lot of happy memories. The winner of the Thanksgiving turkey raffle (Norma Vent) still reflects upon how delicious her prize was; & we can all laugh at the pic-ture Santa Claus (Jim Palmer) made in his scratchy suit! A more recent memory is of the grand New Year's Eve party at which we danced into the wee hours to the superb calling of Randy Longobucco (who came down from CT) & Ed/Les Shearwood. Everyone shared in the midnight supper by bring-ing a special dish, & our President couple, Norma Vent & Jim Palmer, or-chestrated our contributions into one unforgettable spread. Thanks go out to everyone who came & made our evening such a smashing success.
Our Next Saturday Special in January will be the Chinese Auction, brought back again this year by popular demand. There will be a huge ar-ray of lovely items on auction, so come prepared to be a winner! The auction activity will not detract from our dancing - Paul Brody will be calling the squares that night, & the Shearwoods will be cueing the rounds. In all this discussion of Saturday dancing, please do not forget that we dance on the second Wednesday of each month to the calling of Dick Pasvol-sky. Come out and dance with us. SQUARES -- CLwda, N.J. ( QS ) 2 S 4 Friday tan.E Kump6 Schoot, Wicked TeAtace
It started with a catered dinner to candlelight, followed by a demonstr-
ation of a very modern Quadrille, called "St. Louis Blues Square"; erupted into gales of laughter as "Kelloggs Kuties" performed on stage; got every- one into the act with a Grand March; & continued to the end with about 15 sets dancing to both old & new calls by Mike Foley & cues by Jean Kellogg, interrupted by the raffling of 2 beautiful afghans & other prizes. That's right, it was the 20th anniversary Dinner-Dance of Y Suares, held last Nov. A wonderful time was had by all who attended, from the newest member to the many old timers, from those down the street to those who travelled many miles. Since June, 1963, when 32 couples who graduated from a class at the Westfield YMCA decided to form a club, thru to today's twice a monthly dances in Clark, the club has always had a good following & a reputation for friendliness & fun. This certainly was in evidence that night. Let us all thank the Ericsons, Hartlines, Margos,Mehlenbecks & Jean Kellogg who planned & carried out the celebration activities. And-let me close with a quotation from the anniversary dance program,"Tonight as we celebrate our 20th anniversary, we ask all of you to join U9 in a prayer of Thanksgiving for this wonderful group activity and the hope it continues for many more years."

The SQUARE PINCUSHION continues the NEW JERSEY state costume
I'll continue on the costume as promised 2 issues ago.(Time out for the holidays.)
First, the applique. The center back of the vests uses a silhouette of the state of N.J. This can be hand apliqued or done by the machine.
If doing this by hand, add a seam allowance of t° all around. Clip in and press under to the outline. Pin in place and slip-stitch in place. Add an embroidered star applique at the point where your home town is, and sew on the initials N J.
If you choose to use your machine, cut out the design on the outiine,no seam allowance necessary;tack in place with the help of a glue stick or stitch witchery. Use a zigzag stitch very close together and edge the applique all around. I highly recommend practicing on a scrap first. You want this to be pucker free and you need to learn how to pivot on the curves. Finally add the star & initials as above.
An overskirt can be made also in green, gores that are cut and stitched to a point, a N.J. state applique added, same as on the vest, and trimmed with some gathered white eyelet edge the same as trims the blouse part of the dress.
Miscellaneous overskirts, aprons, pinafores and detach-able trims made to suit other holiday occasions throughout the year, will get you the most mileage of this versatile dress.
See you next issue, Happy Sewing, Hose Ericson

We can hardly wait for next week-we've invited all 4 of the adult clubs
on the Island to come to our First Annual Star Teens Christmas Party. Statens was supposed to come to the hall in the morning to decorate, but when they found out that our party was scheduled for the same time, they said they'd come dance with us, & THEN decorate. Thanks- we really do appreciate your support. We have only six more calls to learn before we complete our Mainstream Program. If we're lucky, we'll start another class in February, and try to double the size of our club. We'll see you all soon at the student level dances - we're already starting on our out-fits....and we'll tell you how our party came out next issue. u',17 APPLAUSE is a wonderful way of saying, "Thanks!" Like a -rsmile, it costs nothing and yet provides great dividends.
It is sort of a lubricant that keeps both dancers & callers operating smoothly. APPLAUSE tells the caller that his/her
efforts are appreciated, & his response probably will be to work even harder. It tells the other dancers in the square that you enjoyed dancing with them, & they will feel wanted & appreciated. It is a way of sating to oneself, "That square was fun, and I did my part in making it so.'
APPLAUSE is just another way of sharing the joy of S/D. Everybody gains something from the simple act of hitting the palms of the hands together. Some feel that the custom of all joining hands in the middle of the set for a big "Thank You" in unison is a bit impersonal & lacks the sincerity eye-to-eye contact, & enthusiasm that individual "thank you's" & a round of applause carry. However, this is a matter of personal taste. However you decide to do it, do not forget this essential courtesy of saying " you
you". It is an integral part of S/D. We suggest a round of applause for APPLAUSE.

Round Dance Teachers from 27 states & a Canadian Province attended the 7th annual International Assoc-iation of R/D Teachers, Inc. convention in Indiana. last October. Early registrants were welcomed at a
@ pre-convention R/D party Saturday evening at which a proclamation from the Governor was read declaring
October 23-29, 1983 RID Week in the State of Indiana. All who attended the convention had an opportunity to share their ex-
pertise and talents as the attendees made progress in defining the phases and terminology used in round dancing. The Educational Committee provided several informative sessions. The 1983-4 Classic List was adopted, addit-ions were made to the ROUNDALAB Code of Ethics, R/D terminology, cue words and abbreviations were approved. Were you watching TV in time to see the S/D float celebrating Smokey Bear's 40th birthday go by? Featuring dancers from IA,CO, SD, & CA, the float was the S/D salute to Smokey's volunteers.
All those brillant blue roses you have seen on badges helped to pay for this float...the 9th! Over 500 dancers donated 5,000 + hours to decorate the float in time to glide along Colorado Blvd in Pasadena, January 2. Our thanks to all who purchased or sold roses. For a number of years the TIRRELLS have handled the sale of roses in NNJ, but now with their new responsibilities in ROUNDALAB, they are looking for a volunteer who will be willing to coordinate the NNJ effort for the Square Dancers of America who undertake this project. Please let the Tirrells know ASAP.

IN TFRNATIONAI. ASSEMBLY OF "TRUSTEES" OF THE KAIAK DANCF ACTIVITN,
r- ACY
At the recent LEGACY VI meetings in St. Louis, MO. the following resolutions were passed: LEGACY VI recommends that S/D organizations at
the Local, National International level support Leadership Training by holding Mini-Legacies.
LEGACY VI reaffirms the recommendations of LEGACY V: "LEGACY recognized that square dancing offers many opportunities for social interaction which is enjoyed by all participants throughout the whole spectrum of the activ-ity. The consensus of the meetings was that the social aspect of square dancing is a major factor, if not the most important one, to assure a suc-cessful program. LEGACY proposes that the S/D community be made aware of the importance of social aspects and encourages the continued development of this practice."
Since the learning experience should not be allowed to diminish the goal of having fun, LEGACY VI recommends that the experience of enjoyment be fostered beginning with the dance learning process.
Since square dancing has become a WOrld-Wide Activity, and in the interest of better participation and unity in this project, the S/D Week Committee recommends that LEGACY VI adopt the following: Resolved, that LEGACY International designate September as Square Dance Month.
LEGACY VI encourages outreach programs be developed within and beyond the boundaries of continental North America under the auspices of LEGACY International.
LEGACY also maintains a Hot Line in various sections of the country. An individual or group spotting a potential problem to the activity simply alerts the Hot Line. They in turn contact others and depending upon the situation, the S/Ders across the nation can be alerted within a very few hours. Our Hot Line contact in the North East are the Tirrells. ***************
L U S T - - NNJSDA's"Let Us Speak Together" - A Mini-Legacy or Leader-ship Seminar to help dancers understand what makes a S/D club tick - will be held Sunday afternoon September 9, 1984 from 2 - 9:30- probably in the Montville,NJ area. Joe/Florence DiSano are the Chairmen. Plan to attend.

The UNITED SQUARE DANCERS of AMERICA, now in its third year, will hold its mid winter meeting of their Executive Board at the end of January at Copecrest in Dillard, GA. The location of this meeting will afford those in attendance the opportunity to visit the proposed site of the USDA
Museum & Hall of Fame near Franklin, NC. While the goals of the USDA closely resemble other S/D organizations, the USDA has the capability of focusing greater attention to these goals thru its large state-wide mem-bership...and it is for this purpose that the USDA is seeking to work harmoniously with the many other organizations in the S/D activity.
One of the 2 couples appointed to represent FL as Directors of USDA are our past presidents Frank/Nan Habersberger. And we thought they went to FL to retire::: In fact they're even busier than ever. Did you know they are General Chairmen of the 32nd (1985) Florida Square & R/D Convention!

S Many said it couldn't be done, but the Foun-quar€ Danc€ dation's dream is coming true. Their drive to
Foundation of establish a central headquarters dedicated to n England the promotion, preservation & perpetuation of the New England S/D heritage is reality. In
just 10 months thru the help, interest & generosity of many, their member-ship is now over 800 members and they raised enough for their initial pay-ment of $100,000 on Kramers Hayloft with the Kramers accepting a $75,000 mortgage. ALL facets of square dancing - square dance, round dance, folk dance, callers, cuers, suppliers, clubs, associations, federations work-ing TOEGTHER to provide a home for the S/D activity in New England.
Naturally there is still a tremendous amount of work to do and they can definitely use your help & support should you care to offer it. For further information as to its goals and purposes pick up one of those green brochures at your next dance or write the S/D Foundation of New England at PO Box 329, VBeverly, MA 01915. By the way, all contributions are tax deductable. Should you plan to attend the New England convention in Vermont the end of April, stop by the display of the Foundation and learn more about their ideas first hand.

NATIONAL FOLK DANCE COMMITTEE
CONGRATULATIONS everyone --- it's happening!
S 1448, the Bill sponsored BY Senator Byrd (WV) PERMA-NENTLY DESIGNATING the S/D as the National Folk Dance was passed unanimously, in perpetuity, by the Senate on September 20, 1983. The Holsers & McClures traveled, at their own expense, to Washington, D.C. during S/D Week
to obtain more co-sponsors for HR 1706. Their efforts were bolstered by thousands of telegrams (remember TELEGRAMS TO CONGRESS DAY-Sept. 21) plus the letters & petitions from S/Ders from all around the US. Also, the Congressmen Mineta & Panetta from CA sent another "Dear Colleague Letter" po all previous Cosponsors. The combined efforts of all paid off for by September 30 there were the required 218 cosponsors.
There are now 250 Cosponsors for HR 1706; however, please keep trying to persuade your Representative to become a cosponsor for a PERMANENT DES-IGNATION...we will need a show of strength on a Floor Vote. Congressman Mineta & Panetta have repeatedly contacted Chairman Ford & Members of the Post Office & Civil Service Committee requesting that HR 1706 be reported out of Committee without an amendment. Members of the Post Office & Civil Service Committee must receive letters, cards, petitions, visits, etc from their constituents urging that HR 1706 be reported out of Committee with a PERMANENT DESIGNATION for a House Vote. If necessary to achieve this goal, request that a public hearing be held so members of the S/D activity can testify the S/D be PERMANENTLY DESIGNATED as the National Folk Dance of the USA. Please let's flood the Post Office & Civil Service Committee with letters, cards, petitions, visits, etc.
On the Post Office & Civil Service Committee from N.J. is JAMES A. COURTER - 12th District (Yes, he was invited to the Mini Festival since he lives so close, but declined to attend); In New York - 10th District CHARLES E. SCHUMER; 18th District ROBERT GARCIA; and 22nd District BENJA-MIN A. GILMAN; in PA 6th District is GUS YATRON. Please contact them requesting a Public Hearing be held on HR 1706 for a PERMANENT DESIGNATION. The Public Hearing will be held in Washington, D.C. and will include members of the S/D Activity throughout the USA to testify in support of a PERMANENT DESIGNATION. Frank Cavanaugh has been down to Washington recently and urges all to either write or visit their Representative during the recess (November 18, 1983 to January 23, 1984) to encourage a favorable response. Those desiring a copy of the petition contact Frank/Helen Cavanaugh at 113 Stony Road, Edison, NJ 08817 201-985-1428. *****************
To help the National Folk Dance Committee (who pay all their own phone & travel expenses) with the tremendous expenses involved in mailing, pub-
licity, flyers, etc the committee has designed a new badge (appropriately red, white & blue) - available for a donation of a dollar. Minimum order of 25 + SI postage/handling from George/Ann Holser 226 Coronado Drive, Aptos,CA 95003. Make checks out to National Folk Dance Committee.

VALLEY SQUARES -- Watchung, N.J. + 1,3,5 Thuuday4 Saybetity Lane School
We have been raided by those friendly folk over the other side of the oountain - Somerset Hills! A real treat to see them in their green & hite outfits & they're a great group to be teamed with in sponsoring ou4 'classes. Then it was our turn to raid and we had a super evening at S-harps, thanks to the efforts of Alice/Henry Rowan, our Raid Chairmen. A
re-Sale Boutique for the Class was very successful and a Christmas Dance inviting other Classes filled out our December program for them. We have e Guest Caller, Will Larsen, in February when Carl Hanks is in Hawaii, where he'll bring his Spin Chain and Exchange the Gears almost across th4 International Date Line! A call heard round the world! What next Carl? home dance with us listen to Carl Hanks' mellow music and smooth danceable hythm. That's what it's all about at VALLEY SQUARES.
