This "Chico" is probably th. greatest of the "Old Masters", in the art of throwing a soft- ball, having pitched to the best players in Calif, for the last 20 years and set a strikeout record in 1925 for other "chuck- ers" to shoot at, by mowing iown 21 of the 27 batters to face him in a single game.

boxing promoter, has announces an amateur boxing tournament for the novice scrappers. I must confess that boxing has been my favorite sport for many years and I expect to see al that Hairy has to offer at his sock arena.
I expect to see youngsters that have had enough training to qualify them to show. I am presuming that Harry Harrii personally sees to it that those who do not belong in the fighl game are soon weeded out. That he discourages the boys who arc inclined to take too many by this I mean that he will nol permit them to go on his card if after a fair trial they fail to develop some sort of defense.
Amateur boxing is a "rugged game and the pace is usually much faster than that set by the jjros. Only the promoters in terested in the boys' welfare will carefully match these scraps. A few years ago, while active boxing, I discovered professional has-beens fighting in the ama- teurs against green boys, many of whom were punch-drunk be- fore offering "for hire."
Many in this area join me 'in wishing Harry Harris lots of luck in this "novice" tournament and hope he exercises all of his experiences in matching these kids. Records indicate that champions are developed that way.
Dale Riley was in the other day with a baseball quiz too complicated to write, so if any if you baseball fans want to
know how every player at bat can hit doubles and triples plus walking the pitcher blirid and still not score, then trap the city'a Supervisor, pt ..Rpcreatlon and make him toil you.
I'll warn you however, that's 's a terrffic headache for the
average fan to figure, out.
Columbia Steel Continues With High Scores
The highlight ' in the week's bowling, according to Louis King, is the clinching of the first place position by the hard hitting Rolling Mill team of Co- lumbia Steel's Friday night league.
By winning two out of three points again, they, place them- selves in a position to hold on to first place regardless of the previous night's scores.
In a close second will be theranomcn who have the Rolling
Mill loam "rolling" to beat them. With such men as "Red"~Ossca who bowled a 618 series Friday, the team has been a hard one to beat.
After this week's bowling th final results will be known and the league will finish a highly contested season.

Feature of the show this week will be Dave Levin, former world's heavyweight champion, who challenges Jim Londos for the crown. Torrance Varsity To Meet Jordan In Scrimmage
Torrance High School footbal squad journeyed to Jordan High School in Los Angeles, for a pre-season scrimmage,1 .Sept. 28 This was. an ai'/alr where the teams took turns with the ball
at a.n actual game.s This year's squad looks' very
good, on paper, with its severa returning linemen; Gerald God ard. Frank Dominguez, Jim Standifer, Robert Warning, Bil Rogers, Dallas Martin, and Ralph Prime. The first six men tioned will probably hold down first string positions. ' These boys will fill in the center of the line while the ends will be
losen from among Dan Moon L-roy Schwenk, Bill Dietlin, and
George Poh.The backficld is the weakest
department with only two letter- men, Gene Hollomon, and Frank Dominguez, a lineman who has> been converted. Other contend ers for backfield positions are ~>on Cook, Ralph George, Bill ohnson,' Bud Smith, Kenny haw, Paul Moser, and Bob 'urner.Although the team look;
pretty good, they are still fa from perfect, reports indicate.
