Just the other day Mother West Wind was calling to all the Merry Little Breezes, "Autumn has come to the country and town!" She guided the Breezes, her children, across the sky and they could feel that Father Sun was softening his rays. He had
listened to
Sister
Autumn
who

bed a bit earlier. Ah, the people down below could be heard saying that his sunshine
was no longer as scorching as the summer and they were thankful that he had
listened.
Then Mother West Wind turned and whispered to the Merry Little Breezes, "Now we
will blow over the valley to see what Sister Autumn has brought to the trees. Be ever so quiet so that I can show you the way." But one of the Breezes, Blustery was his name, he did not listen to Mother and blew so quickly that the other Breezes could
not hear their Mother.
At first his brothers and sisters were patient, waiting for him to quiet. But he would
not come to quiet, he was so full of his own wind. Mother told Blustery to tuck
himself in a little canyon where he could blow as hard as he wished. Then she called
the others to follow her and, oh, what the Merry Little Breezes saw as they ever so
quietly listened to Mother point out the magic colors of Sister Autumn! whisper this part‐ "Look there my children, see that my little ones, oh my, what a wonder there...!!"
They could see how Sister Autumn was painting some of the trees with warm gold, rust orange, and flame red. What a lovely sight it was!
That evening when the Merry Little Breezes shared what they had seen with Blustery, he was very sad. He wished he could have listened and gone along on the adventure. But instead he had been lonely and had even gotten very tired of his own windy
noises.

Blue
Jay
was
a
friendly
bird
who
all
the
other
birds
loved
to
be
with.
Why?
It
was because blue jay would help them find nuts and seeds for their tiny baby birds. It was because he sang the most beautiful songs when he knew they would like to hear one. He especially liked to sing along with the songbirds. And tt was because he
always had kind things to say to the other birds, like, "My, hummingbird you are such
a quick and nimble flyer" or "Eagle, your wings are so strong. They help you fly to
great heights!"

But then one day Blue Jay changed. Some say that he woke up on the wrong side of the bed but the fact is no one knew exactly why, especially Blue Jay. But he changed. He began to steal nuts and seeds from the other birds' nests. He squawked a loud
shrill song (I would imitate the squawk here), interrupting the songbirds' melodies. And he didn't have anything kind to say anymore. He instead made fun of the other
birds.
At first some of the other birds thought he was being funny and since they liked him
they would laugh at what he called out in his cackle. But it was just too much
naughtiness for them all. They told him so in the kindest way they could but he
laughed at them with that awful squawk. Then they just had to stop being friends with him. And Blue Jay found himself over time all alone with no one to talk to, no
one to play with, no one to sing to. You can still see him today all alone. Oh he acts proud moving his plumed head this way and that and still calling out with his annoying sounds, but he is so very sad and lonely inside. So very sad and lonely.

For a child who doesn’t know his strength
Once there was a town of friendly, willing people who just really loved the kind and
gentle giant
that
lived
behind
the
Misty
Mountains
near
their
homes.
He
helped
them
clean their chimneys in the autumn time. He rescued their cats out of tall trees. And
he looked out for bad storms.
But it hadn't always been the case that the giant was kind AND gentle. You see, when
the townspeople first encountered him, he was not used to being around such little
people. You have to remember that giants can be very, very tall, as tall as the pine
trees in our play yard! And they have mighty strength in those arms of theirs, arms as big around as our trees' limbs! (show the size with your hands).
Well,
anyway,
these
friendly
townspeople
had
gone
into
the
Dark
Forest
that
lay
in
the nooks and valleys of the Misty Mountains to gather wood for the winter and that is when they came upon the giant. He was very gracious, bowing to the little people
and announcing his name with a soft voice that to them was the sound of thunder. They shivered in fear as they covered their ears but they could see he didn't mean to
bother them. Then they bowed and gave their names but their voices sounded like
straight pins being dropped on a tile floor and the giant couldn't understand. So what did he do? He picked one of them up to hear the name again but he squeezed the

man too hard and the poor gentleman burst out with a dreadful scream. This man
was so shocked and bruised that he wouldn't speak to the giant for weeks.
The mayor of the town could see that the giant felt badly about hurting the man he
picked up and equally sorry about the other injuries that ensued as the giant and the
townspeople became
friends.
Like
the
time
when
the
giant
was
trying
to
guide
the
townspeople to the Valiant Valley where there were many downed trees to be cut for firewood. The giant thought that he could nudge them toward the valley in what he
thought was a quite gentle manner but they all fell over by his rough ways. Some
even had skinned knees and elbows and wanted to shout angry words at the giant.
But the townspeople knew he meant no harm. They slowly taught the giant how to
have gentle hands and ask first before touching them. He listened well and tried to
learn and he did. Now he is kind AND gentle and helps them with the many tasks they
would never have been able to do on their own.

Once there was a little kitten who thought she was so strong and sure. She always
wanted to be first and to do what she wanted. Often her mother found her off somewhere she shouldn’t be and she had to pick the kitten up by the scruff of the
neck and bring her back to the nest where the others knew to stay while so young.
One day when Little Fire was a bit older, for that is what this little kitten was named
by her mother, knew she was not to go near the dog. Her mama had told her and all the kittens never to venture by him until they were older. But now mama was gone
and Little Fire was determined to do what she pleased. She saw the dog sleeping on
his rug
so
she
bounded
over
to
him
on
her
wobbly
legs.
Little
Fire’s
brothers
and
sisters looked on with wide eyes. What was she doing? They knew not to go near the
dog for they had listened to mother who had told them of the dog’s mighty power.
But Little Fire didn’t care. She thought she was so brave and strong, so much braver and stronger than them, she would do as she pleased. She wasn’t going to let mama
tell her what to do. So Little Fire went right up to that dog and put her nose right up
to his nose.
And…with such a flash, the dog gave out a loud bark as dogs will do and flung his
paw
in
her
direction
without
even
a
moment’s
notice!
Little Fire leaped in the air and ran under the bed. Oh how afraid she was! She was shaking and her nose bled where the dog’s sharp claw had scratched it. She felt so
alone and scared and shameful. She could her brothers and sisters mewing for her but they could not come to help her because of the dog who every now and then
would stick his head under the bed and swipe his big paw at her. Oh how she
