Introduction
How do you create an entrepreneurial company, a place where
the entrepreneurial consciousness is alive in all of its people?
You must first have a vision, your Strategic Objective, and then
be able to communicate that vision, inspiring others to be a part
of it so that each and every person in your business works
together to make it happen.
The best leaders must also develop others to lead or the business
will not mature and grow, and will never be separate from them.
Many small businesses fail, in part, because there is no plan for
developing leadership. That is why it’s essential for you to begin
by creating a model of leadership that represents the best of you,
your company, and your people, and then implement a leadership
development system.
In this module, you will go to work on these critical areas. You’ll
find strategies to further develop your own leadership and
communication skills, while creating important legacy documents
for the business that will make it possible for others to effectivelylead, manage, and communicate your vision.
Communicating Your Entrepreneurial Dream
There are strategic documents that will help you inspire and
communicate your vision: Your Strategic Purpose and Your
Company Story. Your company’s Strategic Purpose is a written
series of impact statements that clearly describe how you want
the business to influence, or impact, your employees, your
customers, your lenders, your suppliers, and the community. It’s
a powerful part of your vision because it integrates the two forceswithin the business and within your people—the head and the
heart. The head looks at reason, processes, products, results,
efficiency, and the organization. The heart looks at intuition,
humanity, spirit, feelings, purpose, and the individual. The head
and the heart—connected and balanced—provide a powerful
foundation for creating effective strategies and business plans.

“A business without a vision is directionless. It lacks the essential idea from which commitment,
growth and a sense of personal achievement arise and flourish.”

What Is True Leadership?
Thus far in Mastery Impact! you have focused on the three
main components of entrepreneurial leadership: Vision, Action
and Spirit. In the business development process, The Essential Leadership Skills, you and your management team will drill
down and further develop five core skills: vision, discrimi-
nation, strategic thinking, commitment, and inspirational
communication. At the same time, you will assess your own
leadership and that of your employees, and devise a leadership
development system for your business.
You will also learn that it’s not enough to be a leader in
business; you also have to be an effective manager. Just as there
are five core leadership skills there are also five core
managerial skills: supervision, system development, planningand budgeting, quantification, and informational communi-
cation. A manager doesn’t have to be a leader, but all the
effective ones are. A leader doesn’t have to be a manager, but
all the effective ones are. The point is that to be effective you
need to be competent in all ten core skills. That’s the key lesson
in this module.
Your Company Story
Next, you’ll put your newly acquired skills into practice in
Your Company Story. It’s not a historical description or an
autobiography. Your Company Story is one that tells what is
unique and special about your business, why it matters and
what purpose it serves.
You probably know the inspiring and compelling stories of the
founding of companies that you admire, be it Disney, or
Hewlett-Packard and the famous garage. There is a spirit to
companies like these and the entrepreneurs that started them.
Their spirit lives on through their employees because they took
the time to craft and tell the company’s story.

Effective Leadership and Communication Skills(Prerequisite: Module A)
Your Strategic Purpose
…guides you in defining the impact you want you and
your business to have in the world; once defined, your
Strategic Purpose becomes the heart-based foundation
for your documented business plan.
Your Company Story
…is a story that captures the essence of what you want
your business to become. It’s a description of what
makes your business special. It’s not a history,
although it could include “legendary” anecdotes. It’s
the tale of a game worth playing.
Essential Leadership Skills
…demonstrates that leadership can be learned and
systemized, and that it must be built into your business
so you can be free of it. It explains the five core leader-
ship skills, the five core managerial skills, and the five
types of managers, and it shows you how to develop
leadership skills in yourself and others
