Design Statement

What is architecture? Everyone has their own answer for this. I feel that architecture is something beyond artthat one inhabits not only physically but emotionally. Everyone has their own style and personal touch. I havea traditionalist approach with some exciting and unusual aspects. I have a tendency to use multiple versions ofproportioning systems including the golden section, Palladio's proportions for room heights and the modularman. I like when things are understandable when one looks at them, not to make one feel uncomfortable.

Architecture is beyond designing. It is about problem solving. Architects have to work though puzzles and findsolutions for problems that occur in the world of designing. I work best through process. Finding better ideasthan the one I had before. If one thing doesn’t work, put it aside and find a solution that does work. Peoplehave to love what they do. Don’t just settle. I found a love in architecture.I have always been a big fan of art. I have taken art classes all throughout school. It was always my favoriteclass. I was that kid that asked for paint for Christmas when most kids wanted video games. I played withLincoln Logs, building blocks and my cousin’s Lego bricks. One of my favorite childhood memories was playingwith building blocks with my dad on the living room floor.

I am the creative one in my family. I have been drawing my whole life. There are other ways to expresscreativity though. I started color guard in sixth grade. I did marching band (including parade and field band)and winter guard until senior year. I spun flag and sabre for years and joined the rifle line as well in twelfthgrade for winter guard. I loved performing, the teamwork and the sense of family. I was the section leader myjunior and senior years. I joined theatre in seventh grade doing “Return of the Glass Slipper.” There was noplay production in eighth grade at my school so I joined again in ninth grade. I did the musical every spring andone play in the fall. This includes “When in Rome,” “Flapper,” “Heaven Help the Po’Taters,” “Copacabana” and“Footloose” I continued this in college doing the production of “Oklahoma” and then “You Can’t Take it WithYou” for my second year.

I found Architecture when we had to do a shadowing experience in eleventh grade. I was put into a group thatvisited a local architecture firm in Rome, NY. I learned what they did and how they worked. I found itfascinating. I talked to my art teacher about it after. She encouraged me to go into architecture. I got a lot ofmixed reactions like “Are you sure you are smart enough for that?” and “That is a great job choice. You willmake a lot of money.” It is not a matter of money; it is about fulfilling a dream and going for what I really wantin life. To have a job that makes me happy where I get to design and be creative while still being logical.

The objective is to design a place ofseclusion for one person. It is to bea quiet place for the observation ofthe inner self, or a sacred place.

There are three defined spaces;entry, reflection/ meditation/observation space, and a space witha function defined by the designer.

Five equally spaced horizontalmembers that are 8’-0” above theground are to hold sheets of plasticdefining the spaces. The plastic is tobe hung with clips and string.

The elements to be included are 5lights of the designer’s choice, a16” diameter Sonotube™ 6 feetlong, and 2 framed images.

An Inside Look

4

Penny is a 23 year old actress who has oddjobs as a waitress and bartender. She goeson auditions during the day and out withher friends at night. When she is home, sheis rehearsing lines or watching movies onher home theatre system. She doesn’t careabout neatness and is a slob.

She got the top floor to separate her fromSheldon. She has a radial plan because sheis scattered and unorganized.

Sheldon is a 25 year old computerprogrammer who works at homewithout distraction. He enjoys physicalactivity and going to the gym. He iswell organized in everything he does.

He got the bottom floor with a linearplan to emphasize his organization andpersonality.

Cube and Construct

Three planes in the X, Y and Z axis that are from 1” to 8” and made of 3/16”foam core. Each plane is to be orthogonal to the others and self supporting. Those planes are to be enclosed in an 8” square cube. The cube is to act as acontainer for the orthogonal planes. They are to work together to show spacesand a hierarchy. Portals are to be cut out that make sense and are notcartoonish.

I went with a gothic style castle themed cube with a tower construct. Thehierarchy is the “first floor” that is attached to the tower. The secondary spacesare the “basement” and the “roof” The portals are gothic arches.

The project naturally leans towards modernism, but I did not give in to thoseways and thought “outside the box.”

Structures and Volumes

Using vertical and horizontal structural members, we were to explore theordering, definition and expression of a series of spatial volumes. Horizontaland vertical structural members together defined the spatial volumes. Youmust understand the relationship between shape/form and volume. A gridof nine 1 ½” squares making a grid with 1/8” balsa making shapes to createvolumes in layers. Various amounts of various sized circles, squares, triangles and rectangles that were given made up the layers.

Cubist Painting Analysis

The objective is to produce a three-dimensional spatial analysis of a two-dimensional composition. A cubist paintingwas selected and analyzed. The layers werepulled apart and 3-dimensional forms werefound in the 2-dimensional painting. Thenthe layers were pulled apart and then made3-dimensional. The final result is differentvolumes creating an interpretation of thecubist painting.

My painting is “Le Effort Moderne” byLeCorbusier painted in 1922.

Light is an important part of life.Natural light from the sun has manybenefits although artificial lightinghas become very advanced. Thisproject is all about creating directand indirect lighting using the sun. Abasic light box was created first andthen a museum was designed with apainting gallery as well as a sculpturegallery. Pictures were taken of themuseum every two hours from 8:00until 4:00 to show how time effectslighting.

The corners are indirect, diffusedlighting and the light tunnel in thecenter is direct lighting for thesculptures with a ring to diffuse thelight that would hit the artworkdirectly. The lighting will not damagethe art from any angle of the sun.

Autumn Tree House

The objective is to design a smallbuilding with one space containing adesk, rolling chair, and cabinets inthe season of fall. One is to “climb”and “sit” “off ground” in a field witha given topography in Vermont.

Since there were no trees in thefield, I wanted to go with the ironyof designing a concrete tree with atree house. The wood used is mapleand oak, native of Vermont. Theroof is slate tiles that are orange, red and yellow to represent leaves. The back walls are solid to block outthe direct southern light. Largeopenings face the north wherethere is never direct light but one isstill able to see outside and view theVermont nature for inspiration. Thisis an artists getaway.

I create various things from ducttape. This includes purses, wallets, flowers, masks, neck ties, hats, aprom dress, etc. I wore my duct tapedress to senior prom in 2009. Pursesand wallets are the most commoncreations. They are all unique with notwo the same. The duct tape is puttogether with sticky side to stickyside creating a form of a texturedfabric that can be cut and tapedtogether creating different shapesand volumes. I do this on my own forfun with no guidelines to follow.
