The LED DayLite Wireless Mini, which we evaluated in 2016, has just been upgraded by the addition of new High Definition Imaging (HDi) by Designs for Vision (DVI). According to DVI, HDi presumably uti- lizes advanced photonic design to create a more uni- form distribution of light which, in turn, produces more illumination. Virtually everything about this enhanced model is identical with the non-HDi version, which is still avail- able. Therefore, this preview focuses primarily on the HDi feature, its effect on the illumination level, and any other differences. Concerning the illumination level, our tests found the conventional model to emit 20,100 lux, which was still considered acceptable or exemplary by 90% of our evaluators, while HDi boosted this power to 22,600 lux. Not a quantum leap for sure, but more illumina- tion nonetheless. And as with its recently introduced companion cord- ed model, the LED DayLite Micro, the shape of the beam is square, but unlike the conventional version that has diffuse borders, HDi technology produces a more distinct, focused beam. From a clinical per- spective, the more uniform beam should provide enhanced illumination, but our full evaluation will have to verify that premise. According to DVI, a fully charged battery will power the headlight for about 90 minutes or 1.5 hours. tested three batteries and found an average runtimeof 78 minutes, about 12 minutes short of the 90-minute goal.

Note that there is still no low battery warning whileyou are using the Mini. Therefore, having a fullycharged spare battery close by for quick changingwould be prudent.

Recharging time for a spent battery is stated to beabout 60 minutes, while we found the charger indicat-ing 99% at 60 minutes, but to reach 100%, it took 139minutes or over 2 hours. However, with the 3 batteriesincluded in the kit, you should never be out of juice.

The size of the spot @ 14.0in/35.6cm is 2.7in/6.7cm.As noted previously, the HDi technology makes itssquare borders distinct, not diffuse like most conven-tional LEDs.

With the filter installed, the headlight measures0.8in/20.6mm in diameter, while it weighs1.1oz/31.2g. The size is identical to the conventionalversion, while the weight is 0.1oz heavier. All evalua-tors considered the size and weight of the conven-tional version to be acceptable. Two evaluators notedthat size and weight were the Mini’s best attributes.

This HDi version of the Mini is certainly an improve-ment over the conventional unit (which is still avail-able for $995), while it retains its minimal weight andsize. However, even with its boost in power, you stillneed to accept an illumination level that is lower thanmost of its competition. On the other hand and asnoted previously, most of our evaluators felt the con-ventional model has adequate power, so the some-what higher level of the HDi version may be perfectlyacceptable to you.
