June, 2010

May is a very busy month for many companies, associations, schools and various organizations as they close off their year with an annual general meeting, parties and celebrations. Other organizations are just starting up for the summer and getting their sports team up and running. Many of us are busy with one or more of these events, through work, other organizations, family activities or simply out of our varied interests.

The Desk and Derrick organization fits right in with it all. We have the Region VII Meeting happening this month and we have fun field trips which have been planned for May and June. Lots to DISCOVER during the month of May!

Thank you to the members of our Education committee, who have been diligently organizing the following field trips:

May 19th – 5:30 to 6:30 pm – BJ Fracing Lab Tour, 6920 36

th St. SW, Calgary.

June 19th – All day – Interesting Alberta History Tour - Southern Alberta

As well, thanks to our Program committee we have very interesting guest speakers at our monthly dinner meetings and we have been getting a great turn out at each meeting. Thank you to members for attending and for bringing guests.

We will have even more learning opportunities at the Region VII Meeting, which is happening during the last week in May. I am very proud to say that 10 members from our club are registered to attend. It would be nice

to have more participants, but again, unfortunately, with the busy lives that we all lead, at work and with our volunteer organizations it is difficult to do everything and be everywhere we would like. Maybe those who cannot attend this year will be able to make it next year.

Meanwhile, we should all take some time to reflect on the important things in life and think about what makes us happy. I invite you to please share with us any ideas you may have on how we can help make that happen through the Desk and Derrick Club.

Your input on helping us to organize the right things, for the right people, at the right time is invaluable.

Thank you for listening and in closing, I would like to share with you the following thought:

Science is organized knowledge. Wisdom is organized life. - Immanuel Kant -

Guest Speaker, Kolja

Vainstein

Submitted by Maureen Pearson

Kolja Vainstein is the Manager, Engineering, Renewable Energy for Suncor Energy and was the guest speaker for the May, 2010 joint meeting of the Alberta Foothills and Calgary Desk and Derrick Clubs.

Kolja’s presentation focused on how wind energy is captured and converted to electricity, the advantages and challenges of wind energy, and the present and future opportunity of this form of energy to augment a larger portion of our demand for electricity.

Our speaker explained that wind is created

when warm air rises and is replaced with cooler air to generate air movement or wind. Kinetic energy from moving air is then converted to electricity by wind turbines located in areas where there are favourable wind patterns. The wind turbines are located above ground to heights of 60 to 80 metres which is necessary to pick up the wind currents. The turbines capture the kinetic energy of the wind and a gearbox and a generator, which are the main components within the turbine, convert the speed and movement to electrical energy.

Wind turbines need enough wind (typically 11 to 15 kilometres per hour) to turn the blades and the turbines are structured to shut down when wind speeds reach approximately 90 kilometres per hour in order to protect the structures.

The electricity generated may be used locally or placed on the grid to power homes and businesses further away.

An important advantage of wind energy is that wind farms or wind projects utilize far less space than other energy generation operations. In addition, wind projects can be constructed and operational in a short time frame (approximately 12 to 15 months). Also, wind power is a free fuel source, the energy produced is clean and

emission free, and wind is a renewable resource that can provide a consistent source of energy. In addition, wind energy reduces environmental impact and our dependence on fossil fuels.

The main challenge or disadvantage in implementing wind power is the need for backup or another source of power. Additional challenges are that wind projects are location-dependent, noise levels can be a factor, and avian wildlife can be impacted.

While the amount of electricity generated by wind power in Canada and Alberta remains small compared to other sources such as coal, natural gas and hydro, it is also the fastest growing source of electricity. We learned that Suncor has four wind projects across parts of Canada located in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario. These wind power projects have a total of 147 MW (megawatts) of generating capacity. Over the past decade wind energy capacity in Canada has grown from 137 MW to approximately 3,300 MW or enough to power one million homes per year. Government incentives and industry initiatives have enabled this growth and will remain a

factor for further development in the decades ahead.

Our speaker provided many slides for this extremely interesting and enlightening presentation. The presentation was followed by a very lively question and answer session.

Kolja’s presentation provided us all with an excellent opportunity to

acquire knowledge of an industry that is indeed focused upon “harnessing the wind”.

Questions

Q. How many towers does it take to generate 75 MW of power?

A. A 1 MW turbine can produce between 8,700 MW and 3,066 WM in one year. 2 MW are enough energy to

supply 800 homes. In Ontario Suncor has a contract with Ontario Power to sell all of the power generated from the wind farms to them for distribution. In Alberta it is slightly different. Alberta is deregulated, so we sell to a power pool and that is dependent upon a fluctuating market.

Q. Is Suncor not using wind power for its operations? A. No, all of the power generated from the turbines goes

into the power pool. There are calculations that can be made on the amount of power being used, which would then allow us or other companies to determine a percentage which would come from this source. No one loses power because there is no wind to turn the turbines. The power pool will generate the required amount from the pool.

Q. Do wind farms in water have any effect on marine life? A. Don’t know much about those as Suncor does not own

any. Some foundations are floating on the seabed and there are always environmental studies being done.

Q. Comparatively, how is the US doing? A. Texas is the leader in the Wind Power industry.

California is next and Canada is 13th or 14th. Denmark and Spain are huge.

Q. Where do you get your turbines from? A. The nacel - from General Electric in the US, the blades

from Brazil, the towers from North Dakota, Germany or Japan

Q. What kind of a delay is there on getting the parts? A. In 2007 – 2008 it could take up to a couple of years

and since 2008 it became a buyers’ market.

Q. Are the wind turbines very loud? A. Yes, if you are close enough you can certainly hear the

swooshing sound, but they get much quieter as you walk away. They must be at least 600 meters away from any house and at that point the sound is equivalent to the rustling of leaves.

Q. Have you ever climbed to the top of a turbine? A. Yes, most have devices inside to help you climb to the

next level. Some even have lifts.

Q. Do you have many environmentalists who visit your wind farms?

A. Yes, definitely. Some are pro and some are against wind farms.

- In the early 1970s through the 1980s in the Pincher Creek area environmentalists were saying that birds

were attracted to the arms of the turbines and that the turbines were affecting the bird and bat habitat. There were actually no birds affected but they found lots of dead bats. Studies have been done and it was discovered that the bats’ lungs were sensitive and they would explode when they went from the front to the back of the blade as there was a dramatic change in pressure. This was only happening during migration.

Q. What happens when we have very strong winds? A. There are mechanisms which control the turbines and

they automatically stop turning when we have strong winds.

Q. What is involved in getting permits? A. To name just a few, there are a lot of permits to get,

such as:

- Alberta Utilities Commission - Environment Impact - Federal - Navigation Canada - Highways - Community - Building.

Q. What kind of costs are we looking at? A. A general estimate would be about $2 million / MW,

so a wind farm which would generate about 30 MWs could cost up to $60 million. The life span of a turbine would be approximately 20 to 25 years.

Q. What are other sources of renewable energy? A. Solar, run of river generators or turbines, bio gas from

lands fills and wastes.

I was born and reared in Edmonton, AB and have 5 older sisters. I moved to Calgary in 1993, have met some great

people and enjoy living here. I have three wonderful children Michael, Kari-Ann (Dave) and Brandi-Jane (Michael) and seven grandchildren, Kennedy, Connor, Sarah, Alyson, Seamus, Emma and Jennifer.

When I first came to Calgary I worked as an accounts receivable supervisor for a local

furniture manufacturer. It proved to be a very educational and great job for 9.5 years. I not only worked in AR but also distribution, customer service and handled a variety of other tasks. Then I started thinking that it was time for a change and that it would be nice if I could get into some kind of oil and gas job. I applied at Calfrac Well Services and have now been here 7 years. I supervise the accounting department both in AR and AP so it can be pretty hectic most days.

In my spare time I enjoy cake decorating, quilting, gardening and, of course, anytime with my family is always an added bonus. I have done some volunteer work for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and have participated in The Weekend to End Breast Cancer (60 km walk) for the past three years.

I joined ABFDDC in 2004 and have really enjoyed it. I chaired the Hospitality Committee for the ADDC annual convention held in Calgary in September 2009. I had a great committee to help me, we had an excellent time and I am looking forward to convention in Houston this year.

My dream place to visit has always been Australia so when the trip came up through the club and the Australian Energy Excursion I joined that committee and got to experience an awesome trip down under.

I was born and reared in Alberta. I first joined the Calgary Desk and Derrick Club in 1990 and have served in

almost all positions in the Club, except Treasurer. I have served as President of the Club in 1996 and then again in 2009 and 2010. I served as Region VII Director in 1999 and my Region Meeting was in Long Beach, California.

I received the Canadian Energy Woman of the Year in 2000. I

have also served as the Region VII representative on many committees as either chairman or committee

member. I then served as ADDC Secretary twice and have served as chairman or committee member on many of the ADDC committees.

I have attended Region VII and ADDC Convention meetings since 1994 and have taken advantage of field trips and seminars that were available at these events.

The networking and friendship opportunities are endless and really one of life’s treasurers. There is no amount of money available to compensate for everything that Desk and Derrick provided me in the last 20 years. When opportunity knocks take full advantage of whatever is being offering.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS NORMAN An Update from Connie Harrison

Since last you heard Norman has really been traveling. He is left Amarillo, TX and travelled to Baton Rouge, LA where he was the guest of honour at the Baton Rouge Club’s Industry Appreciation Mardi Gras Ball.

He was crowned King of the Ball and I heard through the grapevine that he danced with every lady in attendance. He has grown up so much and evidently has honed his social gracious to the point that he has become “The Most Interesting Buffalo” in the world. He waved goodbye to Baton Rouge and I am told that many a tear was shed when he departed.

He then traveled to Wichita Fall, Texas where he again took center stage and was treated like royalty. I have attached the report we received from Diane Walker of the Wichita Falls, Texas club that explains what Norman did better than I ever could. I will say that he is now on FACEBOOK. Can you believe it, out little boy has grown up so fast and is becoming quite the social “butterfly”.

After leaving Wichita Falls, Texas he traveled to El Dorado AR, Gaylord, MI, Stillwater, MN, Cross Lanes, West Virginia and should now be in Penn York and soon to travel to Bakersfield, CA.

We are awaiting further updates on his experiences in these places but I am sure we can rest assured that he is the center of attention everywhere he goes. He is becoming a “Young Buffalo of Mystery and Intrigue”. He is becoming so cosmopolitan.

I know that Norman is loving all of his Aunties and Uncles and having such a wonderful time. I bought Norman a playmate and have sent it to his “mommy”. It is a Mammoth and his name is ”Diego from Waco, TX” - don’t you love it. Norman’s “mommy” has been telling Diego from Waco TX all about Norman. Her hope, and mine, is that Norman will welcome Diego from Waco TX as a brother and share with Diego from Waco TX all the experiences he has had and that they will be able to travel together someday back to all of us for a visit.

Please remember to send me your pictures of Norman’s travels and his clothing as he gets new ones. I need the pictures for Norman’s travel log and I need his clothing with your club pins attached so that we can get his trousseau put together in his new suitcases for his Mommy. Thank you all for your hospitality toward Norman and we are all looking forward to hearing from

you as you spend time with him and then send him on his way to another new adventure.

I will close for now and be watching for another update on “Where in the World is Norman”.

Connie

From the West Virginia Desk and Derrick

Club

Norman is here!!! Norman’s original travel itinerary had him visiting with us from April 1st through the 15th. Fortunately for us, he’s running a little behind schedule, you know how those pesky airlines are. So poor Norman wasn’t able to leave MN until April 12th. But he’s here now. He was even lucky enough to attend the Three Rivers Desk and Derrick Club’s second organization meeting. (He might have dozed off just for a bit, but who can blame him, it was the reading of the bylaws!) From there Auntie Charlene Tenney took Norman home, and to the ramp fields on Saturday the 17th. He thought ramps were but Auntie Charlene reminded him that he didn’t want to get too stinky for the West Virginia Desk and Derrick meeting on Tuesday.

Norman arrived at our meeting before most people, and apparently while trying to find out what was on the menu, temporarily became part of the menu. Sam may have not been at the meeting, but this has his influence written all over this picture. You could almost hear “Buffalo Burgers” being chanted in the distance.

During the meeting Norman had a great

time. He met 12 charter members, and watched them get pinned! And then he sampled the 5 year anniversary cake and punch. Norman is off to California next, but we’ll get to see Norman again at Regional. Our club has offered to help babysit for PYOGA, while they host this year’s regional meeting. Safe travels Norman! We’ll miss you

Late Breaking News: Dated May 25, 2010

Update from Bakersfield CA

Norman finally showed up in Bakersfield yesterday and we truly were anxiously awaiting his arrival.

I didn’t know whether to send this to you or the next club in line to receive Norman. Since I had problems sending it to you via customs I will be sending it to the Buckeye Club

today but decided you should be the first person notified in regards to Norman’s sudden demise.

As you are aware we have been having a great down turn in the economy - I will not go into much detail, suffice to say that The Bakersfield Club has been hit extremely hard in this regards. Needless to say by the time Norman reached our club we were all more than a bit hungry.

This is why I am now sending you pictures of what is left over from Norman. As President of the club I take full responsibility as I should have kept a better eye on Norman and my ever so hungry members. We all feel quite guilty (as well as quite full). Thus we are sending our condolences to you his mother.

With much regret.

We are so very Sorry.

May 2010

Greetings ADDC Members!

I’ll start off this letter with some great news! We have received the Teaching Guide for the EAB and it is being sent to the printer. The Board had approved 1,000 copies of the Teaching Guide to be printed initially and to include one free copy with the purchase of each 25 copies of the Energy Activity Book. We will let you know as soon as we receive them at ADO.

We have begun our 2010 journey to CONNECT, COMMUNCIATE and COLLABORATE. So far, I have attended the Region IV and Region V meetings. My first trip took me to the Region IV meeting in Rockwall, TX, where we were Energized by Education. Then it was on to Region V where we learned about geology in the area. Both meetings were a great success and everyone came away with a little more knowledge of the industry and the world we work and live in. The finishing touches are being put on the rest of the regional meetings. All the information is posted on the ADO website if you have not already registered.

You should have recently received the first edition of the 2010 Desk and Derrick Journal. I want to thank Audra Horton and Debbie English for their hard work in getting this out as planned. The articles are great and information from all over the Association was included so that all the membership can be aware of what else is happening around the regions. The next deadline of the DDJ is July 1. Audra and Debbie are already collecting articles for the next issue, so be sure to send any articles or pictures from your regional meetings that might be used in the next DDJ.

The ADDC Nominating Committee is looking for candidates for office in 2011. Are you ready to take the next step? Don’t worry, I thought I was stepping off the edge of the earth when I completed my submittal, but I had a lot of supporters that were ready to support me and catch me if needed. And yes, I have needed it already, but thankfully they were there. Think about it! It is a very rewarding experience and I am not even half way through my year.

If you don’t think you can take that step yet, take a small step by volunteering to either be a rep or a Committee Chairman on an Association committee. It is a great small step to take to start your journey and to learn how things work. Angie Duplessis is currently seeking volunteers for 2011 and the form is on the website.

Until next month….

Spring has arrived! The windows are open, the birds are singing and the crows are fighting over space. The sun is shining and the warmer weather is so uplifting. Spring; a time to clean up after winter and enjoy the outside - it’s a time of renewal!

I have had some inquiries as to why member’s names could not be found on the ADO website. At the end of every year Andre lists all members as inactive until their registrations have been received at ADO. Then they are reactivated. So it is very important that you get your membership application and payment into Andre at ADO as quickly as possible. If your dues are not paid you will not be able to attend regional – you must be an active member.

The Edmonton Club is getting very excited about hosting regional. We all hope many of you can attend. It will be a wonderful opportunity to catch up with old friends, make new ones and experience some of the city of Edmonton. Rita Novak and the GAC Committee have a wonderful field trip planned Thursday and instead of a bag lunch at Leduc #1 there will be a barbecue before beginning the tour of the museum. The seminars sound very interesting and Friday night should be fun as we take in some of the excitement of the “Klondike”. I am very pleased that President Donna Siburt and Vice President Judi Adams will be attending. Neither have been to Edmonton before so it will be fun to show off our great city to them - and to all our visitors. Be sure and join us for open forum. There will no doubt be issues to discuss. I look forward to the business session to hear about what the other clubs have been up to and to an exciting Awards Luncheon. The Saturday evening banquet is sure to be entertaining as our guest speaker will bring us up to date on C02 Sequestration.

I am so happy to announce that Barb Schaefer from the South East Saskatchewan Club is letting her name stand for Region VII Director for 2011. Good for you Barb – I know everyone will give you their full support. Give some thought to volunteering at the Regional or ADDC level. Join a committee and go beyond your club and find out what happens in the rest of the association. It is an eye opener to a bigger world. Without you, our wonderful volunteers, this organization would not exist.

If you have anything you would like discussed at Open Forum please let me know.

Remember to keep those less fortunate in your prayers. There are many that are suffering and need our support.

Until next month…….

Lynne

Club Presidents – Please share this information with your club members!

Dear Fellow D&D Members:

Greetings from Texas!

We’ve had to make a change in our registration form. Due to identity theft problems internationally, it is now an ADDC requirement that credit card information CANNOT be sent through e-mail. This note has been added to both the member form and the guest form. This means that if you are charging your registration by credit card, you must phone, fax, or mail the form to ADO. If you prefer to e-mail your registration form, you will need to leave the credit card information blank, then phone ADO and provide the necessary information. There have not been any problems that we know of, but it is of vital importance to the Association that you and your personal information are protected. Any registrations previously sent by e-mail have been deleted from ADO’s computer after printing your form. Once the charge has been processed through the bank, your credit card information is blacked out so it can no longer be read.

The Leadership Resources Seminar will be offering a seminar at convention. We’ve adjusted the schedule, and it will be presented on Thursday morning. More information will be provided as soon as the details are finalized. The RD Elect training previously scheduled at that time will be moved to Monday evening to make room for this seminar.

We’ve had some requests for information regarding transportation to and from the hotel from the airports. We have made arrangements with SuperShuttle for you to receive a discounted fare when booking with them. That information will be provided in an update that is being prepared and will be posted shortly. The Club Sales and Photography information will be posted at that time.

Your General Arrangements Committee is excited about hosting convention and we are all looking forward to seeing you in Houston in September!
