speakers: Brad Chilcott - National Director of Welcome to Australia, and delegate to ALP national conference who has argued for the ALP to accept boat turnbacks

Chris Breen - Refugee Action Collective activist and long-term trade unionist

Can STOPPING THE BOATS LEAD TO WELCOMING REFUGEES?

a debate about asylum seeker boat turnbacks, regional resettlement and strategy for the refugee movement

PUBLIC DEBATE:

6.30pm Friday July 24, Multi-Cultural Hub Blue Room, 506 Elizabeth St Melbourne

Brad Chilcott recently told the Guardian that ‘Labor needed to accept boat turnbacks’ and a ‘regional resettlement framework’ in order to achieve benefits for refugees in other areas, because the ‘public will not tolerate the perception of uncontrolled borders’. The Refugee Action Collective opposes boat turnbacks and regional resettlement and argues we can build a movement to shift public opinion. Come to the debate to discuss strategy, the ALP national conference, and the way forward for refugee rights.
