The conference, which was organized by Time Taylor International Publishing, was attended by over 300 participants from different countries. DLSU Counseling and Educational Psychology Department facultyDr. Carlo Magno was a keynote speaker together with Professor Rod Ellis from the University of Auckland, New Zealand and Dr. Phyllis Chew of the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Magno, in his keynote speech, provided different perspectives for EFL and ESL teachers to become effective in teaching English while Ellis and Chew talked about task-based language teaching and changing world orders and the teaching of English, respectively. The three speakers addressed issues raised

by the audience about teaching English in the Philippines and the booming English schools in the Philippines that accommodate EFL learners.

Also during the conference, Department of English and Applied Linguistics (DEAL) faculty Jessie Barrot presented his paper titled “Accuracy Order of Selected Grammatical Morphemes in the Monitored Written Compositions of Filipino Adult Language Learners.”

Meanwhile, Jun Feng Xin, a graduate student of DEAL, presented his paper, his masters thesis, titled “Noun Versus Verb Bias in Mandarin-English Bilingual Pre-school Children and the Influence of Salient Positions of Their Bilingual Caregivers’ Language Input.”

Paul Ong, Vernice Liao, and Rosee

Alimon, undergraduate BS Educational Psychology students, also presented their paper titled “Effects of Speaker’s Accent on Students’ Learning and Speaker Rating.” Their paper was also published in the second volume of the Philippine ESL Journal, published by Time Taylor International.

Part of the conference was the inauguration of the Philippine ESL Journal which is the latest sister journal of the Asian EFL journal. The journal is now abstracted in the Asian Education Index, Summons Serial Solutions Index by Proquest, Ulrich’s web, ERIC, and NewJour. Part of the editorial board of the journal are DLSU faculty Dr. Rochelle Irene Lucas, Dr. Danny Dayag, and Magno.

Faculty and students from the College of Education participated in the Asian EFL International Conference last July 8 at the Diplomat Hotel in Cebu City. The theme of the conference was “The Multiple Roles of the EFL ESL Teacher in the Philippines.”

DLsU hOLDs firstbOarDs Of aDVisers’ MeetingMembers of the newly established De La Salle University Boards of Advisers (BOA) gathered for its first meeting held at the Natividad Fajardo-Rosario Gonzalez Auditorium of Br. Andrew Gonzalez Hall last August 8.

The meeting aimed to gather the members of each college’s BOA and allow them to engage the University in meaningful dialogue, and to establish a concrete and sustainable touch point for industry through the advisers.

Some of the major points discussed during the meeting include the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to education, professional training of faculty, strengthening of industry-academe linkage, practicum opportunities for students, and the internationalization of education.

The meeting was divided into three parts: first plenary, breakout session, and closing plenary. All the participants

were accompanied by their college’s council of chairs composed of deans, vice deans, and department chairs and vice chairs. In the closing plenary, a representative for each college presented several action points that transpire during their breakout session.

The first meeting was intended to be on a regular interaction between academe and industry to seek the advice and direction of trusted allies in both the academe as well as in the private sector, and to align college programs with the needs of the industry as well as apprise would-be employers with the skills of graduates.

Lasallian Guiding Principles. To answer our questions and successfully pursue our quests, we must return to the beginning. In order to find real answers and to see our way clearly, we must go back to our real source. This means going back to our core Lasallian values: the spirit of faith, zeal for service, and communion in mission.

That was almost two decades ago. Yet today, the man continues to be a source of inspiration for Sales. He describes Cachero as somebody whose life was measured by kindness, not by the worth of his estate.

“To speak of a man being poor but happy is the greatest heresy today. Atty. Cachero did not die rich. That is perhaps one legacy that tells something of the man. He had spent his life teaching. A lawyer who teaches is commonly perceived as not capable of taking the rough and tumble world of his profession. A kinder view, however, is that a lawyer who teaches hears a different drum and thus, marches to a different beat. It is a transposed and corrected version of the Rubiayat, for Omar Khayyam was looking at the world through

inverted glasses,” he says. To the new and incoming part-time faculty, Cachero

became a sort of half-way house, describes Sales. “The uninitiated new timers meet and talk with Atty. Cachero at Room 401, William Hall, and somehow, the transition was made easier by the man. This is a personal testimony and was, from observations, repeated in others,” he says.

He recalls of stories about the man who could not say no to friends or requests. “Atty. Cachero has stopped often to smell the flowers and perhaps, was left behind in the process by his peers,” he adds.

Sales remembers a quote from one successful American lawyer who told his son: Above all, be kind. “Atty. Cachero had given us this advise and in the best possible way,” he says.

In 1990, one of the most beloved teachers at the Commercial Law Department “unobtrusively” passed away, says De La Salle University’s Legal Counsel Atty. Emmanuel Sales. The professor he is referring to is Atty. Eusebio Cachero, who was part of the University for over 30 years.

The project, which was funded by the International Development Research Centre of Canada, aims to promote understanding of the challenges of inclusive growth in the Philippines (and East Asia, in general) in the face of increased economic integration and rising pressures for industrial upgrading in much of Southeast Asia.

The program also focuses on selected issues of importance toward making globalization work for workers and firms as well as for inclusive growth and international competitiveness in the Philippines.

During the conference, the Integrative Reports from Indonesia,

Vietnam, and the Philippines were presented. Also, six research papers on furthering inclusive growth and industrial adjustment in the Philippines were presented in parallel sessions.

Guiding the research project was a steering committee composed of Assistant Secretary of Labor and Employment Reydeluz Conferido, University of the Philippines School of Economics Professor Emeritus Dr. Gerardo Sicat, Federation of Free Workers External Affairs Executive Assistant Isidro Antonio Asper, and Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman Emeritus Ambassador Donald Dee.

De La Salle University’s Angelo King Institute, together with the Centre for Strategic and International Studies of Indonesia and the Central Institute of Economic Management of Vietnam, held a public presentation of their research papers for the project, “Globalization, Adjustment, and the Challenge of Inclusive Growth” last August 14 at the Renaissance Makati City Hotel.

For responding to this year’s theme, “Know the youth. Know the truth.” winners from the five categories (published feature story on youth and education, published photograph on youth and education, televised feature on youth and education, published feature story on youth and education in a school organ, and published feature story on DLSU) each received cash prizes and an Orlina glass sculpture trophy.

Stephanie Dychiu’s article in Marie Claire Philippines titled “New lives for teen gangs” won outstanding published feature on youth and education for capturing the true stories of the youth immersed in gang lifestyles and how a group of individuals responded to change the course of their lives.

Manila Bulletin photojournalist Regie Mason won outstanding published photograph for his photograph, “Left alone amid dangers” while Linus Guardian Escandor, also of Manila Bulletin, was given an honorable mention for his photograph, “US helicopter lands in Dumagat Country.”

GMA’s Howie Severino, meanwhile, bagged his second Scholarum Award in the Outstanding Televised Feature on Youth and Education category for his

daring exposition of sex education and family planning, “Papa papa, paano ako ginawa?”

Hazel Joy Galamay of Far Eastern University’s student publication, the Advocate, won outstanding feature on youth and education in a school organ for the article “FEU’s artistic heritage: Renewing a sense of pride.”

Philippine Daily Inquirer columnist Augusto Villalon won the outstanding feature on De La Salle University with his article, “La Salle Building cited on international architecture list” for his illustration of DLSU’s rich history and legacy through its oldest building, the St. La Salle Hall.

This year’s board of judges is composed of Isabela Governor and 2008 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee Grace Padaca, RFM Corporation Chairman and CEO Joey Concepcion, Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. President Rina Lopez-Bautista, Chairperson of University of the Philippines’ Journalism Department Rachel Khan and DLSU’s Marketing Communication Office Executive Director Ayi Magpayo.

The Scholarum Awards, which is now on its sixth year, is the university’s means to encourage journalists to provide the public with an intelligent discussion of timely youth and education topics in mass media.

Also, the Scholarum Awards aims to urge various sectors, including governments and private organizations, to be actively involved in addressing the critical issues confronting the youth, particularly their education. This endeavor is envisioned to motivate key sectors and individuals to contribute towards youth development through various initiatives in education.

De La Salle University’s annual Lasallian Scholarum Awards honored the country’s outstanding print, photo, broadcast, and campus journalists for their impressive reportage on various youth and education issues last August 14 at The Conservatory of the Manila Peninsula in Makati City.

The induction of the GSC officers was held last August 1 at the Chapel of the Pearl of Great Price together with the newly elected officers of the different graduate student organizations.

In his welcome remarks, DLSU Vice Chancellor for Lasallian Mission and External Relations Br. Bernard

Oca FSC said that with the establishment of the GSC, graduate students would have a stronger voice,

despite their small number as compared to undergraduates.

“Your contribution to the generation of new

knowledge—as well as your potential to

undertake more and bigger

initiatives and research projects—is actually taking over the center stage of our academic pursuits,” he said.

Moreover, Br. Bernie explained that students would have a bigger opportunity to discuss common issues and concerns, as well as pursue varied interests and advocacies through the GSC.

“Your organizations will not only provide a venue for your professional and personal growth, but will also challenge you to be of help to your fellow graduate students,” said Br. Bernie, addressing the graduate students present during the oath-taking ceremony. “As the first batch of student leaders representing the different graduate programs, I hope that you will serve as models to others who will come after you.”

The GSC Council of Presidents are: Teddy Monroy for the College of Engineering; Lawrence Pedregosa for the College of Liberal Arts; Jerome Ganzon for the College of Science; Gary Soriano for the College of Computer Studies; Jerome Ouano for the College of Education; and Leah

Sampang for the College of Business and Economics.

De La Salle University’s Graduate Studies recently elected and appointed officers of the newly established DLSU Graduate Student Council (GSC) for AY 2009-2010.

In his opening remarks, President and Chancellor Br. Armin Luistro FSC shared that he envisions for the new college to provide what our country needs right now—lawyer-leaders who are equally committed to excellence and service, and who will advance the two ideas which is at the core of the new college—human rights and the environment.

Br. Armin further pointed out that the law school seeks to actively engage in the promotion, protection, and preservation of human rights and environmental laws. This, he said, will make DLSU's College of Law different from any other law school in the Philippines today.

Joaquin Quintos IV, Chairman of the Board of trustees of DLSU, further added that the opening of the College of Law is also part of DLSU’s efforts in giving back to the community in celebration of the 100 years of Lasallian presence in the country.

During the launch, the Board of Advisers (BOA) and faculty of the College of Law were also officially introduced. The CoL BOA includes Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban of the Supreme Court of the Philippines (Ret.), Justice Florentino Feliciano of the Supreme Court of the Philippines (Ret.), Justice Josue Bellosillo of the Supreme Court of the Philippines (Ret.), Judge Anselmo Francisco Trinidad Reyes of the Court of First Instance of the High Court in Hong Kong, and 2009 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee Atty.
