His visit also emphasized the Christian duties of families to go beyond themselves to help the orphans and the poor. “I braved the rains to attend the Papal Mass at Luneta.

Somehow, I felt that I was in solidarity with those who did the

same in Tacloban,” shared DLSU faculty member Grace Zamora

Roldan, whose experience represented the joy and gratitude of

the Lasallian multitude who celebrated with the nation during the

four-day visit of Pope Francis.

The Apostolic visit of the Holy Father last January 16 to 19

DLSU to host Harvard Asia confab

The DLSU Bienvenido N. Santos Creative

Writing Center (BNSCWC) announces

Write Green: Premio Ambahan 2015, a

competition that seeks to promote the

writing of ambahan as a contemporary

expression deeply rooted in Philippine

tradition.

Ambahan is a short poetic form indigenous

to the Hanunuo Mangyans of Mindoro. It

consists of seven-syllable lines, mono-

rhyme scheme, and illustrates people’s lives

in relation to their natural habitat.

Premio Ambahan is open to all

undergraduate students of De La Salle

University’s Manila and STC campuses.

The entry is one original poem in English or

Filipino which follows the stylistic features

of an ambahan. The contest theme is

landscape and environment and entries

may reflect on green things, retell scenes

of disasters, rediscover myth and milieu,

imagine the future, or express love for the

planet.

Only one entry per contestant will be

accepted. Entry should include author’s full

contact information (address, email, phone)

and copy of current EAF (3rd Term AY2014-

2015). Not eligible for the contest are the

student personnel of BNSCWC.

Three winners will be selected to receive

the following prizes: First, Php 4,000;

second prize, Php 3,000; and third prize,

Php 2,500. The decision of the Board of

Judges is final.

The deadline of entries is February 28.

Winners will be announced in March.

Entries may be submitted electronically,

as Word attachment, to bnscwc@yahoo.

com, with “Premio Ambahan” as subject.

Chemical Engineering grad students and faculty in Kumamoto University exchange program

To introduce Asian youths to leading Japanese universities,

research institutions, and private companies, Chemical Engineering

graduate students were sent as delegates to Kumamoto University

in Japan as part of the Sakura Science Plan last October 15 to 24.

PhD students Angelo Choi and Fritzie Baldovino and MS students

Clarence Co and Christian Uson were accompanied by Chemical

Engineering Associate Professor Dr. Michael Mananghaya in a

10-day tour. The exchange program was sponsored by the Japan

Science and Technology Agency (JST),

Kumamoto University professors Dr. Armando Quitain and Dr.

Makoto Takafuji gave lectures on breakthrough research studies

relating to nanotechnology and supercritical fluid technology.

A tour of university laboratories were also held and opened for

use of the students. Private companies, such as KOHJIN Film and

Chemicals, Suntory Holdings, and Kaketsuken were visited.

The Harvard Project for Asian & International

Relations (HPAIR) Asia Conference, one of Asia’s

largest business and youth leadership gatherings,

returns to the Philippines after 21 years. DLSU was

selected to host the confab this August 20-24.

As Harvard University’s largest annual student

conference in the Asia-Pacific region, HPAIR

has continuously gathered and carefully chosen

international students and academics from major cities

throughout Asia.

The confab, which focuses on social, political,

economic, and cultural business issues, is known to

attract key dignitaries such as UN Secretary General

Ban Ki-Moon, former Australian Prime Minister Kevin

Rudd, and Director of the Earth Institute, Professor

Jeffrey Sachs.

The 2015 HPAIR Asia Conference is presented

by HPAIR and DLSU in partnership with the Ayala

Corporation, Globe Telecom, PHINMA Corporation,

and the Jollibee Foods Corporation as primary

sponsors.

In the recently filed House Resolution No. 146, Dr. Alvin Culaba, University

Fellow and Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Academician

of the National Academy of Science and Technology, was commended by

the 16th Congress of the Philippines for his conferral as “Outstanding World

Researcher of 2014” by the International Association of Multidisciplinary

Research (IAMURE) on May 1, 2014 and for his numerous contributions in the

fields of science and technology.

A recognition ceremony was held last January 21 at the Batasang Pambansa

and was presided by House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. In attendance

were Rep. Henedina Abad, Deputy Speaker, Rep. Victor Yu, Chairman of the

Committee of Science and Technology, Rep. Eric Olivares, Rep. Arnulfo Go,

Rep. Damian Mercardo, Rep. Roman Romulo, and Maria Ethel Culaba.

During the ceremony, House Speaker Belmonte commended Dr. Culaba for his

dedication and for helping the country gain further recognition in the fields of

science and technology.

New York Times bestselling author Michelle Hodkin, on her first Philippine

book tour, visited De La Salle University last January 20 for Author Talk

and a question and answer session with her audience. The event was

sponsored by DLSU Libraries and Fully Booked.

Hodkin is the author of the highly successful Mara Dyer Series: The

Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (2011 YALSA Reader’s Choice selection), The

Evolution of Mara Dyer, and The Retribution of Mara Dyer. She grew up in

Florida, went to college in New York, and studied law in Michigan.

Currently the President and Chancellor of University of St. La

Salle in Bacolod, Br. Ray also serves as a Board of Trustees

member in various organizations, including DLSU, La Salle

Green Hills, and De La Salle Santiago Zobel School. He

served as Chairman of the Board at La Salle Lipa and DLS

College of Saint Benilde in 2013. Br. Ray is also La Salle

College-Victorias President.

Br. Ray serves as member of the District Council of the

Lasallian East Asia District. He was Chairman of the Board of

Lasallian Supervised Schools Association, Inc. in 2013.

A student of DLSU Integrated School, 5th grader Marco Erano

Dumale, won the gold medal at The Chong Hua Cup, a Math

competition held last July 19-22 in Hong Kong.

The tournament was participated in by students from Hong

Kong, Macau, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and

the Philippines. He also won a bronze medal in the Star of

Mathematics competition.

On October 5-11 last year, he also participated in the 11th

International Mathematics and Science Olympiad held in

Bali Indonesia, where he won a bronze medal in the science

category. The IMWO was participated in by 224 students from

various countries, including the Philippines, China, South Africa,

Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Brunei, India, Kazakhstan, Nepal

and Indonesia.

NY Times best-selling writer in Author Talk

He earned a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology with high distinction at

DLSU in 2007. He also attended the Pontifical Gregorian University

in Rome, where he took a Bachelor and a Licentiate in Clinical

Psychology from 1982 to 1983, graduating magna cum laude in both

programs.

A consistent honor student, he also graduated magna cum laude in

1969 at then DLS College, with a double degree in AB-BSE.
