“I braved the rains to attend the Papal Mass at Luneta.
Somehow, I felt that I was in solidarity with those who did the
same in Tacloban,” shared DLSU faculty member Grace Zamora
Roldan, whose experience represented the joy and gratitude of
the Lasallian multitude who celebrated with the nation during the
four-day visit of Pope Francis.
The Apostolic visit of the Holy Father last January 16 to 19
centered on the communities devastated by Typhoon Yolanda,
as well as the youth-at-risk, the poor, and other marginalized
sectors of society. His visit also emphasized the Christian duties
of families to go beyond themselves to help the orphans and the
poor.
A Lasallian contingent joined other Catholic school
representatives who welcomed Pope Francis as he entered
the Mall of Asia Arena for the Meeting with Families
on January 16.
DLSU also sent select students for the Pope’s Encounter with
the Youth on January 18 at the University of Santo Tomas
Grandstand and Open Field.
A seminar-workshop on “Procaliming the Joy of the Gospel...
Experiencing God’s Mercy and Compassion” was also held on
campus last January 8.
The seminar sought to increase people’s awareness, interest,
and understanding of the Pope’s document “Evangelii Gaudium”
so they can also evangelize in their respective parishes, schools,
and dioceses.

Opportunities for community engagement The Center for Social Concern and Action (COSCA) met
with a Leveriza partner community last January 7 to
identify possible short term community engagement
opportunities wherein DLSU departments and offices
can participate.
Barangay 717 of District 5, Manila represented by its
Chairman, Victoriano Barbosa, noted areas that can be explored
for partnership programs. These areas include: training on children’s
rights for youth; catechism and values formation session for youth;
computer literacy for youth and adults; setting up of a mini-library
at the Barangay Center; computer literacy; and medical or dental
support.
COSCA encourages the academic and co-academic units
of the University to participate in these activities. COSCA
Coordinator for Community Engagement Joseph Rosal may be
reached at telephone number 525-4267 or local 147 and email
address [email protected] for details.
