“Put on love, which links
everything together in perfect harmony.” ~Colossians 3:14
August 2013 LINK: One of the best summer activities in our region is going huckleberry
pickin’. Huckleberries are the best berries that the northwest has to of-
fer. These little delicacies are worth their weight in gold. The hardest
part of this fun pastime, is actually keeping the berries and not eating
them as fast as they are picked. In our family, not only do we like to
pick them, but we like to enjoy them in ice cream form at Huckleberry
Heaven in Elk River. Enjoy that last bit of summer, fall will be here
sooner than later!
September 2013 LINK: Sitting around a meal, talking with others, and enjoying the great
outdoors are all things that bring a group of people together. Our
church has offered the great opportunity to enjoy each other's company
at campouts for the last two years. This picture was taken at last year’s
campout. Nothing like coffee and eggs (omelets in a bag) for breakfast
in the morning during camping. Join us for our annual All-Church
Campout September 13-15! More information on page six. See you
there! Photo taken by: Andrea Johnson

What I Did On My Summer Sabbatical I have enjoyed a wonderful summer of study, reflection, rest and renewal, and I
would like to share with you just a brief overview of my activities. I had three goals for my
sabbatical: to engage in academic study in areas of personal interest, to undertake biblical
study which will inform our fall sermon series, and to complete a practical ministry project.
On the academic side, I read, studied, wrote and attended classes at Regent Graduate
School of Theology (in Vancouver, B.C.) on the theology of Saint Augustine and the litera-
ture of J.R.R. Tolkien. Saint Augustine (354-430) is most well-known for his spiritual
autobiography Confessions. In this work I focused on the themes of friendship and grief
and the purpose of human life. J.R.R. Tolkien (1892 – 1973) is the author of The Hobbit
and The Lord of the Rings. With Tolkien I enjoyed reflecting on our journey through life:
“It’s a dangerous business,” Bilbo Baggins declares, “going out of your door. You step into
the Road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept
off to.”
Biblically, I focused on the many ways the New Testament uses the concepts of
farming and gardening when describing how we are called to live the Christian life. Jesus’
teaching includes a sower and grain seeds, wheat and weeds, mustard seeds and vineyards,
vines and branches. In similar fashion the apostle Paul speaks of wild olive shoots being
grafted onto the cultivated olive tree, reaping what we sow, and the fruit of the Spirit.
These biblical themes will form the basis of our fall sermon series beginning September 29:
“What’s growing in your garden?”
I serve on the committee of our Presbytery which guides and oversees those in the
process of becoming ordained as pastors in our denomination. The committee lacks a com-
prehensive manual of policies and practices, so as my practical ministry project for the sum-
mer I volunteered to produce one. I have presented my draft to the committee and we will
be fine-tuning it this fall.
I also had time to enjoy my relationship with Lauri and to visit family on both sides.
Lauri’s family mostly live in Washington and we had a wonderful week with them on
Whidbey Island and in Darrington. We also spent some time in Colorado with my father
and my siblings where he has spent the past three months either in the hospital or in care
facilities. He has a life threatening disease and we are grateful for the time we have been
able to be with him.
Lastly, let me thank Pastor Josh, the
rest of our church staff, and the Trustees and
the Board for their leadership this summer. I
was confident that I was leaving the church in
good hands, and I was not disappointed!
Thank you for your prayers for me while on
sabbatical leave. I have missed you, my
church family, and I look forward to being re-
united.
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Steve

WEDNESDAY
The Well for September God invites us into a new way of living that is larger than ourselves. It is a movement, not an institution: a people, not a place to go. It is service and sacrifice, not self and security. It is not what you say; it is what you do. It is loving God and loving others.
Join us at the well, starting September 11 at 6:15pm.
We will be kicking off the new series Church for the Rest of Us. Come and enjoy coffee, cookies
and conversation.

The Parables of Jesus Class led by Pastor Steve Wilbraham; 10am in the
Administration Basement Room
Jesus often taught using parables which are
stories that convey important spiritual truth.
Many of Jesus’ parables refer to simple
everyday things, such as a woman baking
bread, a man knocking on his neighbor’s door
at night, or the aftermath of a roadside
robbery; yet they deal with the message of
the gospel such as the growth of the Kingdom
of God, the importance of prayer, and the
meaning of love. Join Pastor Steve
Wilbraham as together we read and discuss
these amazing teachings of Jesus.
God's New Society: A study of Ephesians Class led by Steve Taulbee; 10am in the Chapel (off of Fellowship Hall)
Join us as Steve Taulbee educates us on Paul’s teaching to the Ephesians.
Paul discusses the vision of a renewed community set against today's background of
alienation and strife.
Equipped for Every Good Work Class led by Pastor Josh Bruns; 10am
in the Administration Conference Room

how God wants to use you? Do you have

yourself? If so, you are invited to

will spend a number of weeks together
for the purpose of helping believers
identify and utilize their Spiritual Gifts.

STEWARDSHIP! Welcome back after a long hot summer! The Stewardship group is planning our
Autumn Campaign. Kelly Paynter has found an excellent book for children on
“Giving, Saving, Spending” which we will explore with the Children’s Ministry. We
also hope you keep us in mind if your Small Group has a request for any financial re-
sources. We would love to have an expert member from our church or stewardship
team come to your small group for a single session to help teach and inform you on fi-
nancial questions and issues.
There is a really good resource online for financial planning forms, to help or-
ganize your information. The website is: www.presbyterianfoundation.org Click on
Financial Planning. The forms I thought were helpful were: Personal Record Book,
Guild to a Christian Will, and Estate Planning Worksheet. If you click on Resources
on the blue bar across the top of the page and then click on Financial Resource Center
you can look at the forms that are most appropri-
ate for your age group: 20-30, 30-50, 50-70,
70+.
Please call or email me or Kathy Johnson
(in the church office) to request a class for your
small group. Vicky Boubel 509-243-4424 or

Thank you for your faithfulness
throughout the summer!
The beginning fly fishing class made a camp trip up the
Lochsa River July 19-21. This gave everyone a chance
to enjoy the wonderful scenery of northern Idaho and fish
for native cutthroat trout on a blue ribbon class stream. It
was a hot weekend but pleasant under the big fir trees at
the campground. We fished a couple of holes together
Saturday morning with everyone working on casting and
hooking fish. By the afternoon I think everyone had
caught at least one fish on a dry fly. That evening we en-
joyed stories around campfire, s’mores, and a great dutch
oven dessert prepared by Joline Moore. Those camping
included Steve & Joline Moore, Gary & Beth Chase, Larry and Tina Lantz, David Kugler, Jim,
Gabe and Eli Cach, Mike Holder, and Jim and Becky Schroeder. It was tough to leave the
beautiful surroundings and head home Sunday. We had a great time and hopefully will plan
one more trip before the weather gets too cold.

church can provide this outreach
program.
Our goal is to be able to stock the Sharing Room with donations of new or gently used
items from the congregation. We will be collecting items throughout the year starting with
the list below and then asking for specific items as needs arise.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact Marcia Barkley at benand-

Choir Song Birds: Our traditional chancel choir will begin rehearsing on Wednesday,
September 4th at 7:00 pm downstairs in the choir room. If
you are interested in singing with our choir this year, please
contact Beth Katzenberger at the church. Our practices are
on Wednesday evenings, from 7:00 pm-8:30 pm and
Sunday mornings at 10:00 am in the sanctuary, prior to the
11:00 am traditional service. We hope to see some new faces
and hear new voices as we start another years journey in
music ministry.
Worship Team: Our 8:30 contemporary worship team is in need of a few more
instrumentalists and voices as well. Practices vary, and we are look-
ing not only for musicians, but also people with fresh, new ideas for
worship and music leadership. Contact Beth if you are interested or
curious about being a part of this ministry.
Bell Choir: Fall rehearsals will be on Thursdays, from 6:00-7:30 pm in the Admin
Building basement, starting September 5th. Please note the
change in day and time.
We’d love to have more people share in our ministry and
fall is a great time for new people to join our choir. You don’t
need to know how to ring bells—we’ll be happy to teach you!
You can’t read music? No excuse, we can help with that, too.
All you need is a desire to have fun, a willingness to learn, a
commitment to come to rehearsals, and a sense of rhythm (if
listening to lively music makes you feel like drumming on a
table or stomping your feet, you’ve probably got it). If you’re
interested or want to know more, please call Greg Thompson
(758-2622).

During the summer, Gary Gibler, Janet Pinson, Micki Mennet-Martin, and Greg
Thompson from our bell choir attended the National Seminar of the Handbell
Musicians of America in Portland. The seminar lasted four days and offered a huge
variety of classes to help us expand our skills. We also got to listen to some out-
standing bell choirs. A Japanese choir named Kiriku played over five octaves of bells
and chimes with only 6-8 ringers (to
put this in perspective, our choir of
11+ ringers plays three octaves). The
Hong Kong Youth Handbell Ensemble,
comprised entirely of kids between the
ages of 12 and 16, played from
memory music that ranged from
classical to Lady Gaga! We also
watched a couple from Portland’s Bells
of the Cascades dance a tango while
ringing bells! Needless to say, we
returned home awestruck, inspired,
and excited to try out what we learned!

Has your home seen an excessive amount of weed growth
this summer? Well, we are experiencing the same prob-
lem at our church. It has become difficult for our custo-
dian, Dick, to keep up this summer, with his recovery
from knee surgery. If you have a little extra time during
the week, and enjoy gardening, please think about stop-
ping by at your convenience to pull a few weeds and pro-
vide a little TLC for our grounds. Whether you have 10
minutes or an entire morning, any help would be greatly
appreciated.
