Dear Parents and Students Our Semester II College Mass celebrated the theme “A Heart of Flesh”. Loreto is a school deeply immersed in the mission of the Heart. We place learning not only “at the heart” of all we do but we also strongly emphasize the importance of learning ‘about the heart’ and ‘from the heart’. From the Catholic Catechism, the Heart is: the dwelling place where I am, where I live, my home; my hidden centre, beyond the grasp of our reason and that of others.

Our inner heart is our soul; it is the very essence of our being. Fr Christopher Gleeson SJ captures our mission of the Heart well when he speaks of education being “a process of learning to savour what moves and affects our hearts and minds”. The heart is commonly reached, not through reason, but through imagination; and it is imagination that allows us to put a mirror to our own experiences - and in that reflection, to discover the true meaning for ourselves and others. Learning ‘about the heart’ is to discover who and what we are and what it is that gives meaning to our lives. Teaching this love of self is a transforming process that develops the whole person in relationship with self and others and it is in that love of others that we are called to give ‘from the heart’.

We thus congratulate each recipient of a Semester I Honour Pocket. These girls, who were presented with their Honour Pockets after last Thursday’s Mass, have given ‘from the heart’ – both generously and selflessly. These fine young women exemplify Mary Ward values in their hearts and minds and through their actions. We are proud to duly acknowledge their fine example of what it means to be Loretian through commitment and service. We warmly congratulate these Year 12 Students:

Art News Three Loreto Art students recently entered essay work into the Write About Art competition, produced by Flying Arts in association with

Eyeline Publishing and the Queensland Government.

The three Year 12 students, Emma-Shay Gallenti-Guilfoyle, Mikaela Lynch and Megan Smart, were successful in being selected to have their work published in a full colour anthology by Eyeline Magazine, a leading visual art journal. Students will choose their own mentor from a selection of established industry mentors who will work with them to hone their writing skills and produce a high quality work for publication.

Congratulations girls! The selection panel was impressed with the high standard and quality of your submissions. We wish you all the best for your writing workshop in September and look forward to seeing your work published next year.

Debating News Last Wednesday was the first of the Finals for Debating. Loreto had five teams competing: 11.1, 9.2, 8.1, 8.2 and 8.4. Unfortunately, only

8.2 progresses forward to join 9.1 next Wednesday.

Well done to the girls who debated last week! All teams lost only by the smallest of margins and I thank Mr Cutts, Mr Rawson, Ms

Gooley and Mr McKinlay for their efforts and time in helping the girls.

Next week, we will be supporting Mrs Radvan and Vail Bromberger as their teams face off in Finals 2. Best of luck to Maddie Lloyd,

Rebecca Marshall, Hannah Radvan and Meghan Shannon as well as Leah Carey, Lauren Causer, Rachael Wands and Emma Richardson.

We are behind you all the way! Rosemary O’Neill - Debating Coordinator

Drama Department A group booking has been made to see “Mary Poppins” Wednesday 15th February 2012 for any interested

students. I have managed to secure seats in Balcony 2 – Rows A-J for students (approx. $50.50 per ticket). School

Group Bookings are always allocated these seats – that is why the price of the tickets is considerably reduced. I

have booked and been allocated 50 seats for students. Unfortunately I cannot add to this booking so it will be a

case of first in - best dressed! A booking sheet has been placed in the Main office for any student who is interested

in securing a seat to this performance. You will be informed regarding payment arrangements at a later date.

Students are responsible for their own transport to and from the Lyric Theatre on Wednesday 15th February, 2012.

ICT News

Information and Computing Technology Competitions

Throughout the year a series of computer competitions are run through the Australian Mathematics Trust and the University of Sydney. In

Term Two we ran the first of these competitions: The 2011 Australian Informatics Competition. The content of the competition is very

difficult and based on the types of mathematical questions found in computing. This year six students sat the test across a range of year

groups. Of the six students who sat the test: Abby Martin, Jemima Moore, Alexandra Cracknell and Dayna Watson all received Certificates of

Participation; Madeline Pratt received a Certificate of Credit, and Eloise Rimon a Certificate of Distinction. Well done!

The next competition in the series is the NCSS Challenge which is an online programming based competition that is run over five weeks in

Term Three. The program students will use is Python. Each week a series of exercises will be posted on the Internet by the University of

Sydney. The University of Sydney will provide an online tutor and at Loreto support will be provided to assist students who wish to take part

in the competition. Any students interested must see me before Friday this week. Mr Lane-Richardson - Snr ICT Subject Coordinator

Library Hours During Term 3 2011 the library will be trialling longer opening hours. Starting Monday, August 8th , the library will be open from 7.30am to

4.30pm, Monday to Friday! Come in, and borrow a book! Debbie Northway - Teacher Librarian (Acting)

Music News Trivia Night – Don’t miss out on the Trivia Night this Saturday 6 August in the Mary Ward Centre! Organise a table of 8 or just purchase

your tickets, using the flyer on the back of this newsletter. This is the Music Support Group’s single biggest fundraising event for the year and therefore finances the majority of the $8,000 worth of scholarships that they offer to Loreto Students. Students are welcome to book and form their own tables.

QCMF – the Catholic Colleges’ Music Festival is one of our main performance opportunities for each year and all College ensembles are

once again entered. As previously advertised, the dates for this year’s Festival are Thursday 18 August to Sunday 21 August and attendance by all ensemble members is compulsory. UNIFORM – for all performances (except Guitar Ensembles One and Two and Sorelle) students are expected to wear the College uniform, including navy blue stockings. Hats are not required. If weather is cold at your performance time, you should wear a College Blazer – not jumpers or PE tracksuit tops. Guitar Ensembles will wear black pants and shirts as for regular con-certs. Sorelle will wear their Mt Gambier Tour uniform.

Chorale Rehearsal - Chorale members should arrive at Room 701 in time to begin rehearsal at 11:30 on Information Day this Sunday 7

August. Don’t forget that Chorale members will also stay on after Senior Choir on Tuesdays 2 & 9 until 6 pm to make sure you are fully prepared for QCMF.

Concert Band One – Will be performing on assembly on Tuesday 9 August. All students are to arrive by 8 am and meet in 705. Don’t

forget that your rehearsals this week and next (4 & 11 August) are extended until 5:30pm. This has been advertised in the past three newsletters and at rehearsals, so it is expected that all members of the ensemble will be available to stay on these weeks.

Mt Carmel Fete – Sorelle and Exit Stage Left have been asked to perform at the Mt Carmel School Fete on Sunday 7 August, starting at

11am. The performances will be held on the Mt Carmel handball courts and students from both groups should arrive by 10:30am as we are performing at 11am. Chorale members will need to return to Loreto as quickly as possible after the performance for their Information Day Open Rehearsal.

Parent Helpers – For the past 20 years, Villanova has run the Catholic Colleges’ Music Festival as a service to the Catholic community in

Queensland. It is now a huge event that runs for four days (Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 August). This is a massive undertaking that relies on the help of a huge number of Villanova parents, students and past pupils. There is now a way we can help! Any Loreto parents or senior students who would be willing to assist by signing up for a 3 hour shift over the weekend can do so via the Villanova website (http://www.vnc.qld.edu.au/Music/events.htm). You can choose the sort of job you would like and also the venue. Now that our performance schedule has been in the newsletter, it is easy to sign up for a shift directly before or after one of your daughter’s performances. There will always be experienced people on all shifts who can help make the job very easy – it would be great if the Loreto Community was able to support this important event in our calendar!

String Sextet – The String Sextet have been asked to provide background music at an International Women’s Mental Health Forum held

at the Brisbane Convention Centre on Saturday 20 August. While this is QCMF weekend, and a very busy time for all, we have agreed to this

performance. It is a great honour to be asked to play at this very important event. Ben Langford - Director of Music

Year 8 Assessment Planner This week the Year Eight Assessment Planner will accompany the newsletter. This will help you to assist your daughter in organising and

completing her assessment items by the due date. In Semester Two, with an increased assignment load, it is important to plan and organise

time effectively. We frequently encounter girls trying to copy their assignments on the morning they are due. Any printer or software failure

at this late stage will mean the assignment will not be ready for submission. The girls need to plan their time to avoid the last minute rush

and anxiety this causes. All assignments are given out well before the due date with sufficient time allowed in class to complete work. Girls

are reminded of the need to use this class time effectively and avoid distracting chat and inappropriate use of our internet facilities. The due

date of an assessment piece has been established by the amount of work required to complete the task so if students use their time wisely

both in class and at home the task will be finished by the due date. I encourage parents to assist their daughters in meeting the deadlines of

the assessment requirements with the use of the assessment planner provided. Jenny Strachan – Year 8 Coordinator

Results Round 7 - 27 July

OPEN ONE

Loreto One had a tough afternoon out this round with a hard fought battle against Brigidine. We were short of troops due to illness and

were without a goal keeper, putting us on the back foot right from the outset. Our girls put up a great fight and gave it their best over the

whole match. Anna Hertle showed a large amount of “ticker”, putting her body on the line in one of her attacking runs up the centre. She

had a most impressive face-down stack as she was tackled by the Brigidine full-back, but promptly got up, dusted herself off and ran back to

regain the ball. This is despite the strong taste of famed Downey Park turf that would have no doubt lingered in her mouth for a

considerable time thereafter! Brooke “Bring It” Postle really came into her own when the chips were down, with rock solid defence at

full-back and some scorching 50-60 metre runs up the left side of the field to bring the ball into our attacking zone. She also had a great

crack at taking short corners this match. Elise Gellweiler revelled up in the forwards, keeping the Brigidine goalie on her toes with some

great shots from the top of the circle. Tyler Kilvington at centre half showed how much her stick-work has developed this year, leaving the

opposition scratching their heads at times. Clare Griffiths backed up admirably after her stint in the NAB comp earlier in the week and

capitalised on some loose deflections in the circle to score our sole goal for the match. Unfortunately we were not able to claw our way

back after Brigidine scored five goals in an unguarded box, resulting in a 5-1 loss. The whole team is to be congratulated on their tenacity

and great sporting spirit. They represented Loreto in a fantastic manner by showing Brigidine that we never give up and just enjoy being out

on the pitch for the fun of it. You did us proud girls! Matt Lourigan - Coach

OPEN TWO

Unfortunately the Loreto Two team was defeated by Mt St Michael’s One his week, 3- 0. It was a tough game for the girls but they never

gave up, staying strong in defence and making great attacking plays. Awesome work in goals by Lauren Williams, stopping many shots on

goal, and fantastic attacking runs by Isabel Christ. Elisa Mooney - Open Two Coach

This Week’s Draw: Round 8 - 3 August

Things have not gone our way in the finals. However, those who turned up to play this week thoroughly enjoyed themselves regardless of

the outcome. Well done!

Loreto One is now out of the top four and will play Mt St Michael’s Two in the final round and Loreto Two is out of the top two and will play

Brigidine. The final round for the BSGSA Hockey competition is on Wednesday, 3rd August. Alan Lane-Richardson - Hockey Coordinator

NAB HOCKEY

Loreto v Brisbane State High School

The second round of the NAB Cup Hockey competition started well with a goal in the first two minutes from a very well executed penalty

corner. From this point Loreto never looked back, leading the game to the very end.

In the first half Loreto dominated play forcing six penalty corners compared to Brisbane State High’s one. Loreto’s play during the half was

fast with very accurate passes between players giving an edge that BSHS found very difficult to match. At half time Loreto commanded a

comfortable lead of two goals to nil.

After half time the comfortable lead didn’t last. A very determined opposition had picked up the pace and penetrated deeply into Loreto

territory scoring quickly after four minutes of play from a field goal. In response Loreto dug deep to match the opposition’s determination

and effectively neutralised the attack. The following fifteen minutes of the game remained centre stage with neither team dominating play

until eleven minutes of play remained. In the final eleven minutes Loreto scored two more goals and sealed the fate of the game. In the end,

Loreto defeated BSHS five goals to two.

Two goals were scored by Murphy and Georgia and one by Claire. An excellent effort was put in by all fifteen members of the NAB squad.

Well done!

Thanks to the wonderful support from all the spectators and helpers who have given up their time to support the team and lend a hand. In

particular, thanks to Leah for coordinating the timekeeping and scoring at the game.

When writing this report it is not known who we will meet in the final round for Division Seven. As soon as this information is known I will let

you all know who we play and when. Alan Lane-Richardson - NAB Hockey Coordinator

Junior A Grand Final

The grand final for Loreto Junior A Soccer will be played tomorrow Wednesday 3 August. Please come and support the team who are

undefeated in the 2011 BSGSA competition. The match will be played at the Annerley Soccer Club, 98 Victoria Terrace, Annerley kicking off

at 4.00pm and should be completed by 5.00pm. Due to Athletics on Tuesday mornings, there will be no more training in 2011.

Jim Bellos - Coach & Katherine Stephanos - Manager

Results: Round 7 - 27 July Junior B - The Junior B team played against Lourdes Hill in what was a very competitive match. There were several occasions where either

team could have scored, particularly Loreto in the second half. Keeleigh proved a formidable striker and was unlucky not to get a goal on

more than one occasion. However. the outstanding player was our defender, Brianna, who was on to every ball that came her way and

kicked us out of trouble (and with some authority!). After a scoreless game, we went into extra time and then into penalty shoot out where

Loreto proved too good coming away with a victory 3 - 2. Brianna, Fifi and Yana all scored goals and Yana was outstanding in goals. While

individuals were mentioned it was a real team effort where all players did their best. A big thank you to Jim Bellos who stood in as coach for

the day and I wish all the players the very best in their last game of the season. Chris Jones - Soccer Coordinator

Open A Soccer - Loreto College 4 (Kearney, Caputo, Milligan, O’Leary) defeated Stuartholme 0

Right from the start Loreto took control of the game, dominating in midfield with great intensity and fast movement of the ball. It was

only a matter of minutes when a pass from Zoe-Lee Spero lead Captain Grace Kearney towards goal and 1v1 with only the Keeper to beat.

Grace made no mistake capitalizing on the fantastic pass, slotting her shot past the advancing Stuartholme Goal-Keeper to put Loreto 1- 0.

Early goals have been hard to come by for the squad this year, but it was no surprise when Carla Caputo used her pace well to beat her

marker. Charging into the box from a wide right position Carla slammed home her shot into the roof of the net making it 2- 0 within the first

10 minutes.

Chances were coming thick and fast due to a complete performance in midfield by work horse Emme Ball; however these chances were only

foiled by an outstanding performance from the opposing Goal-Keeper making a number of good saves.

Loreto went into half time 2 - 0 up and looking good. With rock solid defense from Madi Brown and Andrea Plaxton, Stuartholme struggled

to get back into the game, especially with the ever reliable Taili Beausang protecting the Loreto goal.

The second half was much of the same for the Open A team. Emme Ball and Fiona Malone continued to overwhelm the opposition and take

control of the game in midfield - It was only a matter of time until the Yellow and Gold’s would score again. Patient in their search for a third

goal, Loreto played some very attractive football and were eventually rewarded through another net breaking shot – this time from

Courtney Milligan.

3 - 0 up wasn’t enough however, and the squad pushed for a fourth goal. Late into the game Captain Grace Kearney broke free from a wide

position. With only the keeper to beat, but this time from a more demanding angle, Grace unselfishly cut the ball back into the path of the

talented Kelly O’Leary who hooked her shot around the keeper finishing with the best goal of the game. It was a great way to finish the

game and a great result.

Full-time and 4 - 0 was definitely well deserved. Outstanding performances all round by the players; it was good to see such a fantastic team

effort. Well done girls, let’s have more of the same next week! Brandon Vitale - Coach

Matches for 3rd August 2011 – FINAL GAMES FOR THE SEASON Junior A vs Brigidine Court 26 Junior B vs Our Lady’s College Court 11 Junior C vs All Hallows’ Court 8 Intermediate A vs St Rita’s College Court 39 Intermediate B vs Brigidine Court 24 Open A vs Lourdes Hill Court 35 Open B vs St John Fisher Court 41 Open C vs MMC Court 14 Intermediate C vs MMC (2) Court 1 Intermediate D vs Lourdes Hill Court 5

Results: Round 7 - 27 July

Junior A - This week was a tough game for the 8A's with only 7 players. It was hard to keep up with Mary McKillop College’s fast game. The

girls went down fighting, unfortunately losing 32 - 10. Coach - Magdaleine Ryan

Junior C- Loreto was defeated by San Sisto College 31 - 4. This game was very intense and surprising. We lifted our defensive intensity after

the first quarter but made little in road in our goal tally, as their defence was exceptional. Full credit to the spirit of our girls who played with

their heads held high. Leading the way in the midcourt were Tiarna Brock and Sarah O'Shea. We're looking forward to a more even game in

our last round, so we show what we're made of! Coach - Mrs Jacqui Gold

Intermediate A - In a nail-biting game, the Intermediate A team beat Mt St Michael’s this week, 25-22. The game was close throughout

and showcased how much each of our players has progressed during the season. They worked together seamlessly as a team and played to

each other’s strengths. Our centre court players performed particularly well and Alannah Jeffcoat and Emily McMahon deserve special

mentions for their tenacious defence and opportunistic attacking. We go into our last game of the season with fresh determination.

Congratulations girls! Coach - Claire Wilson

Intermediate B - Score was St John Fisher 23 - Loreto 15. A slow start by the Loreto girls allowed St John Fisher to get an early

advantage, which proved hard to catch up to. The girls managed to pull themselves together for a stronger third quarter. A particularly

good effort by Mary Kate Dennis who fought hard in the defensive circle until the end of the game. Coach- Rebecca Healy

Intermediate C – Had a convincing 29 - 7 win over Mt Maria College, which places the team second on the ladder and gains them a

position in the grand final match against the strong Mt Maria team this week. Jacqueline West and Melissa Roberts put in an inspired effort

in defence, obtaining numerous circle and mid-court intercepts. However, while the team as a whole did not play to their usual standard,

the win illustrates they are definitely capable of a much better performance in their last and most important game of the season.

Coach – Bridget O’Connor

Open A – The Open A team flowed well down court yesterday against St John Fisher College and delivered some excellent aerial balls into our shooters. The shooting circle was on fire with fantastic accuracy, good use of fakes and short sharp passes around the circle. The final

score was 33 - 21. Coach - Adeline Ryan

Open B – Loreto defeated San Sisto 24 - 14. Although the girls had a shaky start, they entered the second quarter phenomenally and kept

getting better from there! Strong defence and immaculate transition down the court resulted in a great win. Special mention must go to

Georgia Dennis and Eloise Jackson for their teamwork in defence. Coach - Larissa Hughes

Open C – The girls had a great game today defeating Mary McKillop College 24 - 8. Excellent shooting by Alyssa and great centre court play

by Hannah Fowler. Coach – Karen Holahan
