If the Boeing Co. and Bolsa Chica Con-servancy were a married couple, they’dbe presenting each other with some-thing silver in 2015.

They are marking the 25th anniversary ofa partnership that has seen the conservancybenefit from thousands of volunteer hoursput in by Boeing employees, along with morethan $400,000 in corporate and individualdonations.

And for Boeing employees, being involvedwith the conservancy has meant getting up

Even though no silver anniversarygifts are being exchanged, this long-run-ning relationship is not going withoutnotice.

Boeing and Bolsa Chica Conservancyare being honored this year with the Giv-ing is Living Award from OneOC, OrangeCounty’s hub for mobilizing volunteersand supporting nonprofits.

In the words of OneOC president andCEO Daniel J. McQuaid, the Giving IsLiving Nonprofit/Corporate VolunteerPartnership award is “the highest honorthat recognizes outstanding partner-ships between nonprofit organizationsand companies.”

The collaboration between the compa-ny and the conservancy will be spotlight-ed at the annual Spirit of Volunteerismluncheon.

The award is notable, said GraceAdams, executive director of Bolsa Chi-ca Conservancy since 2003.

“It gives us a sense of validation for thekind of work that we do and the impact

we’ve made on our community.”Adams said the nonprofit has numer-

ous corporate partnerships that help tocarry out its mission of restoring the1,400-acre preserve and providing edu-cation to youth in wetland science, coas-tal ecology and sustainability.

But no other partner can boast of thelongevity of Boeing.

The conservancy was launched in 1990and Boeing, Adams said, has been therefrom the start.

Repeatedly.“They’re a company that walks the

talk,” she said. “They don’t just write thecheck; they come and roll up theirsleeves. They get down in the trash andhelp us clean up the basin.”

A place that is known as a birder’s hea-ven has become a favorite pet projectand respite for many employees at Boe-ing, famous for its own winged prowess.

“I always appreciated it when I droveby at 60 mph, but to really appreciate it,you’ve got to walk the paths and see thenature up close and personal,” said Tere-sa Howe, Boeing’s environment, healthand safety director in Huntington Beach.

Volunteering drew in Howe, who hasworked at Boeing for 13 years.

“For years, I drove by the wetlands, glanced over and thought, ‘Oh, that’skind of neat.’ But I had never popped in.”

Now she not only attends the annualclean-up day, but has served as treasureron the conservancy’s board of directorsthe past four years.

Howe appreciates having what shecalled “a little oasis” like Bolsa Chica thatJEFF GRITCHEN, STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER

offers a relaxing wilderness experiencein Orange County’s urban environment.

“It’s kind of ours to keep and maintainand support. It’s notsome distant conceptualthing. It’s right here inour neighborhood.”

Some 85 Boeing em-ployees turned out in Fe-bruary for the company’sannual day of service atthe conservancy – pullingweeds, removing invasiveplants and picking up de-bris. They wore T-shirtsthat read: Give Inspire Volunteer EveryDay.

Anne Blaikie, configuration data man-ager in Huntington Beach, has partici-pated in the clean-up since 1998. She’s al-

so volunteered at the wetlands as part ofBoeing’s Global Day of Service.

In the past, Blaikie has taken her hus-band and children with her. This year, she brought along her father, who wasvisiting from Minnesota.

“I love helping clean the wetlands tohelp the birds have a clean place to live,”

said Blaikie, who hasworked at Boeing for 34years. “I have picked uptrash, cigarette butts, and pulled weeds there. Igrew up on a 160-acrefarm and I love nature.”

of the conservancy’s goals. Boeing hasplayed a key role in that effort as well.

The conservancy was awarded twoCrystal Vision Award grants through theEmployees Community Fund of BoeingCalifornia. The fund’s money comes di-rectly out of workers’ pockets with pay-roll deductions and one-time giving.

The first Crystal Vision Award grantin 1999 provided $50,000 in seed moneyfor the Wetlands Research Program thatexposes Advanced Placement college-bound high school students to hands-ondata collection and wetlands scienceprojects.

A second Crystal Vision Award for$30,000 in 2011 launched the Youth Lea-dership and Environmental Actions Pro-

gram through which students from mid-dle school to high school receive year-long mentoring at the conservancy. Theycan do research, lead tours, or get in-volved in outreach and educational pro-grams.

Boeing employees also have offeredtechnical support to the conservancy, which has only five employees, served asguides and conducted field activities forchildren. A group of engineers also cameby one time to help paint and do roof re-pairs, Adams said.

“We depend on the support of diffe-rent members of the community,” shesaid. “But to have a longstanding rela-tionship with a company like Boeing isphenomenal.

“It’s impactful for a little organizationlike ours that is trying to do big things.”

Spirit ofVOLUNTEERING

Volunteering stems from passion – a sense of caring and ownership of one’s community. Volunteers act on that passion daily, helping neighbors and strangers in their quest to improve our community.

This list represents a portion of that effort. The people listed here – as numerous as they are – stand for hundreds more acrossOrange County who make the community stronger each day. And they barely hint at the thousands and thousands who benefitfrom their kind efforts.

For that, the Register salutes these individuals for their contributions, knowing the impact they make will stretch far into the future andserve as inspiration for others to act on their passions to the community’s benefit.
