20 February 2020
Student Investiture Investiture for our School Leaders for 2020 will take place tomorrow, Friday 21 February at 8.35 a.m. (Pat Cavanagh) Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Our STEM journey at Coolum continues in 2020 with reimagined curriculum units and new and exciting opportunities like ‘Drone Days’ being planned. STEM is the integration of our curriculum subjects Science, Technology and Mathematics underpinned by a real-world problem solving context. Typically a STEM task draws key content from each of these subject areas and poses a problem specific to a relevant topic of study for the class. Students then follow an inquiry process to investigate the problem and work collaboratively to design (engineer), test and reflect on their solutions. STEM tasks are incredibly engaging and provide students with opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of the curriculum focus and also real-world collaborative problem solving skills. In addition to our classroom tasks we will continue to offer a number of fantastic opportunities for students to participate in coding and robotics clubs and competitions like the international robotics competition ‘RoboRAVE’ to be held at USC in May. STEM continues to be a major focus for education around the world as employment opportunities in this area are growing at twice the rate compared to other occupations. To assist schools meet the challenges of implementing the Australian Curriculum Technologies learning area, that forms the key component for STEM, the Queensland Government has committed $81.3m that will be used to provide professional development to teachers and purchase resources like robotics kits. One of the key features of a STEM task is having a real-world context so we are always looking to build partnerships with our community. Perhaps you are working in one of the STEM fields and want to share your work to inspire a new generation. Please don’t hesitate to let your child’s teacher know how you might be able to help. I’m looking forward to another exciting year and can’t wait to share our continued success in 2020. (Andrew Grummitt - STEM Teacher)
News from 6W The children of 6W have made a very pleasing start to their final year in primary school and they are seeing the team teaching environment as great preparation for their high school life. As usual, we have hit the ground running and our days are full and varied. I am proud to say that 6W has four wonderful school leaders in the group and many others are showing that they are embracing the opportunity to be excellent role models for their classmates as well as the other children in our school community, especially their Prep buddies! This term in English, we are focusing on creating our own short stories and in Maths, we are looking at timetables and interpreting data displays to obtain relevant information. In Science, we are looking at natural disasters, while in HASS the focus is on federation, government and citizenship. A huge highlight of this term is our 5-day "Hero's Journey” leadership camp in Week 8 at Tallebudgera on the Gold Coast, which is fantastic opportunity for our Year 6 cohort! There is always something happening for our students in our magnificent school and I urge you to read the newsletter to keep updated on all the events on offer. Mr Burnett and I are looking forward to a great year with your beautiful children and I thank you in advance for your support. (Steve Burnett & Gary Williamsz)

(Ross Naumann) Author Visit – Dr Cameron Stelzer, The Story Doctor On Tuesday 25 and Wednesday 26 February, we have a special visit from Author and Illustrator Dr Cameron Stelzer. Dr Cameron is visiting Coolum State School to run writing workshops with our Year 3 and Year 5 students. Cameron will be engaging students in a workshop to motivate and inspire students with their writing, and help prepare them for their own writing tasks. All students will be exploring techniques to create blockbuster action stories – think gripping suspense scenes, epic action encounters and hold-on-to-your-seat cliff-hangers. Students and teachers are looking forward to a great two days! In conjunction with the Author Visit, Coolum State School families have a special opportunity to purchase signed and personalised copies of Cameron’s books at special prices. There is no obligation to purchase. Individual books are $15 each and there are also exclusive book sets available. Students will receive an order form on the day of the workshops. Forms and payment can be returned the following day to the Library. (Terry O’Brien)

Student Performing in Sport Over the past two weekends Coen (6P) has competed in two regattas at events hosted by the Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association. He competed in the OC6 National Sprint Titles for the Noosa Outrigger Canoe Club in the U14s last weekend, and this weekend he competed in the South-East Queensland Polynesian Va’a-Alo Regatta and won a silver medal with his team in the OC6 U12s. This was a particularly special win for Coen as he has a Polynesian background. (Contributed by Cat Picton) Noosa District Swimming Carnival
On Wednesday 19 February, Coolum State School nominated a squad of 16 swimmers in the District Swimming Carnival at the new St. Andrews College Swimming Pool. As expected, all swimmers gave their best and most were placed in the top four in each heat. Even though some of our swimmers were placed first, second or third in their chosen events, their times did not warrant selection in the District Squad. However, Coolum did receive six invitations to the Regional Carnival. Those selected were Hazel (5P), Amelia (6M), Britney (6M), Harper (5M), Ploy (4B) and Joshua (6G). Special mention must go to Hazel for an outstanding day and winning the Ten Years Girls Age Champion. Congratulations to all competitors on your efforts. You certainly showed the Coolum spirit of never giving up. Overall Coolum finished second with a score of 116 points. Thank you to all parents for giving up your time to transport our swimmers and supporting the Coolum team. (Mark Dwyer and Ben Moody)
