MCC Newsletter 2 Friday, 9 th February 2018 College Opening Mass and Prefects Investiture A very proud College community came together on Friday, 2 nd February for the Opening Mass in the Paul Rafter Centre and included the blessing of all College Student Leadership badges and presentation to our 10 College Prefects and 35 Peer Support leaders. The College Prefects were introduced individually by one of their Year 12 peers, who described the Prefects’ leadership experience and attributes. Aspiring student leaders listening to the speeches, came away motivated to follow in the example of the Prefects. Year 7 students were encouraged by the visible support offered by the Year 11 Peer Support Leaders, who look forward to assisting the Year 7 students in the Peer Support Program this year. College Opening Mass and Prefects Investiture

Thank you to all College students for the respectful and reverent manner in which they conducted themselves at the Opening Mass. Special thanks to Fr Israel and Mr John Swindells for the running and organisation of the mass, Ms Deborah White for organising the event and Ms Fran Christie for conducting our wonderful musicians. A heartfelt thank you to all staff for their help and support of our Opening Mass.

Positions Available

Welcome Year 7 Students Our new Year 7 students have had a fantastic start to their high school journey with two action-packed weeks spent settling into the routine of Year 7. Having learnt about Irene McCormack, toured the College, attended Mass, practised using their lockers and met their Year 11 Peer Support Leader, our Year 7 students are now ready to dive into their academic studies.

Temporary Teacher’s Assistant

We currently have a vacancy for a temporary Teacher’s Assistant role to start as soon as

possible until 21st September 2018, with the possibility of an ongoing position.

Year 7 Parents – Meet the Care Group Teacher On Monday 12th February, the Year 7 Parent Information and Meet the Care Group Teacher Evening will be held in the Paul Rafter Centre. Beginning at 6.30pm, the evening will be an opportunity for parents of Year 7 students to meet the staff who will work closely with the students over the course of the year. The evening is divided into two parts with a short information session followed by a question and answer forum, and then an opportunity to meet your child’s Care Group Teacher. Parent Information Evenings This week we commenced the series of Parent Information Evenings, with Year 8 on Monday and Year 10 on Tuesday. The dates for other year level Parent Information Evenings are Year 7 Monday 12th February. Year 9 Monday 19th February. Year 11 Tuesday 20th February. Year 12 Tuesday 13th February. All meetings commence at 6.30pm at the College. Our Assistant Deputy Principals will email further information to parents. You are welcome to contact them if you require further details. Lynn Scholarship for Year 11 Students The Lynn Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to students who might be deprived of an upper secondary education in a Catholic school because of the economic or social circumstances of the family. This year there will be seven Lynn Scholarships awarded. The intent of the scholarships is to assist with payments associated with school fees, books and uniforms etc. To be eligible, the student must be enrolled in Year 11 at a Catholic School in Western Australia in 2018. The value of the scholarship will be up to $1,500 and is payable in 2018. Mrs White, Assistant Deputy Principal Year 11, has sent the conditions and an application form for the Lynn Scholarship to all Year 11 parents. Applications close on Thursday, 1st March 2018. 2018 Online Interim Reports The 2018 Interim Reports this term will only be available to parents and students online on CONEQT in March. The format of the reports will be the same as previous years, with electronic signatures. All year groups will receive email information regarding online access to the reports by their Assistant Deputy Principal, which can then be viewed and printed on CONEQT. Playgroup The Community Services class will be running Playgroup once again this year, and we would love you to join us. The session is every Monday morning from 8.45am to 9.30am, with the children participating in craft activities, reading, playing and enjoying nutritious snacks.

Moran Contemporary Photography Competition We are excited to see the increased interest in Photography by our Year 8 and 9 students this year, with our very first classes in this subject commencing last week. In addition to the program run at the College, students can choose to enter Photography competitions. A range of prizes are on offer for those who are lucky enough to have their work selected. The first competition is fast approaching, with the Moran Contemporary Photography Competition entries closing at midnight on Wednesday, 7th March. This competition is run across the country and can be entered by students in Years 7-12. We encourage all our Photography students to enter, however all students are welcome to enter their work. The theme for the competition is ‘Contemporary Life in Australia’. More information regarding the theme, previous year’s winners and how to enter, can be found at www.moranprizes.com.au/enter

Swimming Carnival On Monday, 19th February, students will travel to HBF Arena, Kennedya Drive Joondalup for the annual Interhouse Swimming Carnival. This is a compulsory school event and all students are expected to attend. Students will have the opportunity to compete for their house in swimming events, novelty relay events and other court activities. The main focus of the day is participation. This includes students having fun whilst engaging in teamwork and sporting activities. It is an expectation of the College that all students will be actively involved in this worthwhile day. The Carnival will be held in the indoor 50m pool and indoor court area. Students must arrive at the College and attend Care Group by 8.15am for an 8.30am departure. Students will return to the College by 3.05pm. Students will be transported to and from their venue by bus and are required to wear their full sports uniform. They are encouraged to wear bathers underneath. This includes:

• House sports polo shirt

• School sports shorts

• School sports jacket

• White school sports socks

• Sports runners (they may bring thongs to change into at the venue)

• For court activities, students will need dry clothes (House Shirt) and sports shoes. Students are encouraged to wear appropriate swimming attire including:

• Rashies/rash vests

• One-piece bathers

• Please note that College swimming bathers are not compulsory for the Interschool Carnival in Week 4

While students are encouraged to get into the spirit of the day, please be aware the following:

• Strictly no coloured/glitter hairspray

• Strictly no streamers/pom poms made from crepe paper (this stains the tiles)

• Coloured zinc is permitted

• After competing, students will be asked to wear their house polo shirt

• No glass bottles Please ensure that your child brings enough food and drink for the day, as food will not be available to purchase. It is essential that all students bring a water bottle and sufficient nutritious snacks. Parents are most welcome, and are encouraged to attend and support their child on the day. If you wish to take your child home with you from the venue, please send a note to school so that we may confirm by phone. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us at the College on 9562 2400. Please ensure your child’s medical details are up-to-date with the College by Tuesday, 13th February.

Swimming Training Swim training has begun and we are off to a great start. We have had very good numbers for our two sessions, before school on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Training is open to all students who would like to improve their technique, fitness or potentially represent the College at the ACC Carnival in Week 7. The bus departs the College at 6.50am for a 7.30am start at HBF Arena.
