COLLEGE P A L A E R E N T I NEWSLETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL Prefects’ Investiture, The Chapel, Rostrevor College Dear College Community On Friday 31st January, we held the Prefect Investiture Ceremony for 2015. It was a wonderful occasion during which we recognised the importance of student leadership at Rostrevor College. We were joined by the 2005 Deputy Head Prefect, Tom West, who shared his reflections of his time at Rostrevor and post-school with the Prefects and their families during the chapel service. When gathered as a whole community in Purton Hall, our newly appointed Head Prefect, Cristian Di Iulio, gave a brilliant speech about the call to service to which all in our community must be committed. My congratulations to our 15 Prefects for 2015: Cristian Di Iulio (Head Prefect), Ben Jonas (Deputy Head Prefect), Tom Kenny (Head Boarder), Anthony Onofrio (Baron House Captain), Darcy Pisani (Egan House Captain), Ross Pezos (Murphy House Captain), Jack Kayias (Gurr House Captain), Vinnie Barbaro (O’Brien House Captain), Lachlan O’Donnell (Webb House Captain), Dale Haynes, Chris Saji, Marlon Shepherdson-Gore, Anthony Perugini, Darcy Nitschke, and Will Critchley. Our Prefects are an outstanding group of young men and I have every confidence they will lead the College in exemplary fashion. Dear College Community

On Friday 31st January, we held the Prefect Investiture Ceremony for 2015. It was a wonderful occasion during which we recognised the importance of student leadership at Rostrevor College. Extract from Principal’s Address

A well-known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $50.00 bill. In the room of 500, he asked, “Who would like this $50 bill?” Hands started going up.

He said, “I am going to give this $50 to one of you but first, let me do this. He proceeded to crumple up the $50 dollar bill. He then asked, “Who still wants it?” Still the hands were up in the air.

Well, he replied, “What if I do this?” And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty. “Now, who still wants it?” Still the hands went into the air.

“My friends”, he said “we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $50. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless. The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we know, but by WHO WE ARE. You are special - Don’t EVER forget it.”

Years 7-12 Parent Information Evening

It was great to see so many parents at the Years 7-12 Parent Information Evening last Wednesday night. A great deal of information was delivered; therefore I suspect that some parents may have missed a few points. Please note that the PowerPoints are currently available from the Parent Portal by clicking on the “Parents Documents” link on the home page.

When Mr Dash welcomed parents, he referred to the ‘Pyramid’ of school-family partnerships where the student was at the apex. The success of any student at Rostrevor depends entirely upon the strength of the three-way partnership that must exist between student, family and school. This partnership has as its foundation, respect and trust. We all want what is best for the boys and in order for this to happen, the College and its staff must respect the role of parents / caregivers in being the first and most important teachers of the boys. Likewise, the parents / caregivers must respect the teachers and support them in their role and the boys must respect the parents / caregivers as well as the teachers. With over 1,000 people on our campus every day, all with a different set of life’s circumstances, it is critical that this occurs.

Prefect Investiture and Assembly

At the Prefects’ Assembly, the prayer and the Gospel reading were about Servant Leadership. Students are reminded that the servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. This is very different to the servant leader who wants to lead first, perhaps because of the need for power over others, or need for authority.

The servant leader:

•values everyone’s contributions and regularly seeks out opinions and cultivates a culture of trust amongst his peers.

•develops other leaders - this means teaching others to lead, providing opportunities for growth and demonstrating by example.

• ‘sells’ instead of ‘tells’. A servant leader is the opposite of a dictator. It’s a style all about persuading, not commanding.

• thinks ‘you’ not ‘me’. There’s a selfless quality about a servant leader.

•A servant leader acts with humility. The leader doesn’t wear a title or a badge as a way to show who’s in charge, doesn’t think he’s better than

Welcome Back

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all new families and welcome back to existing families.

It is already Week 3 of the term and as is always the case at Rostrevor, life is full of enthusiasm and action. In welcoming everybody to the new academic year, the Year of Opportunities, we hope that all students have set their goals and established their own positive habits at school and at home.

Already we have had a number of wonderful celebrations such as the Opening Ceremony in the Valley, the Prefects’ Investiture, the Parent Information Evening and today, the Dux Assembly. All of these have been full of energy, wonderful messages and extensive involvement from staff and students.

It seems that our Opening Ceremony gets better and better each year and now attracts an even bigger parent audience than ever before. It is wonderful to be able to welcome our new students into our community via a Year 12 Guard of Honour, and led by a bag-piper into the valley where they are greeted by their new House.

At the Opening Ceremony, we also welcomed new staff.

Director of Boarding, Eugene Evans, joins us this year after having served the last 4 years as Head of Boarding at the Catholic Agricultural College in Bindoon. Prior to this he spent 15 years in Narrogin (south of Perth), working at the Narrogin Residential College, and then at the Agricultural College as Head of Boarding for a period of 3 years. We wish Mr Evans well in his new role and we also extend a warm welcome to his wife, Pam, who will be living on campus with him.

Deputy Director of Boarding, Gerrard Doyle, is an experienced teacher and has had substantial experience in both boarding and leadership in schools. He has been associated with Catholic Education for 24 years in South Australia, the Northern Territory, far North Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.

Year 3/4 Teacher, Lucy Centofanti, has taught in many schools including St Francis Xavier, Wynn Vale, St Joseph’s, Hectorville, St Augustine’s,

everyone else, and acts in a way to care for others. Setting an example of service, the servant leader understands that it is not about the leader, but about others.

Our Prefects have been called to be servant leaders and to serve-first in their role as Prefects. I know that they have taken their responsibilities seriously and will represent the student cohort and Rostrevor as Servant Leaders who will uphold the traditions of the College.

Students were encouraged to take advantage of the many leadership opportunities on offer at Rostrevor College. Within the coming weeks we will commence the process for the election House Vice-Captains and we encourage students who have leadership aspirations to nominate.

Dux Assembly

I would like to offer my congratulations to the Graduating Class of 2014 on their success in their final year of schooling. At our Dux Assembly this morning, we acknowledged their achievements and, in particular, congratulated our Merit Winners and students with ATARs above 90.

Year 10 Father (Mentor) / Son Days & Retreat

Next week, on Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th February, we will be holding our annual father (or mentor) and son days and Retreat for our Year 10 students. The program consists of two parts with 3 House groups participating in a Retreat on one day (boys only) and then spending the day with their father or mentor, experiencing a range of activities here at the College on the second day. It works in reverse for the other 3 House groups. Every year this has run we have received numerous messages of thanks and encouragement for it to continue. While it is difficult for some fathers to get time off work it is certainly worthwhile for all those who can attend.

I am looking forward to a very productive and successful year!

The 2015 school year has commenced, with 46 Indigenous students enrolled at Rostrevor College, with a few enrolments still pending.

We welcome eight Indigenous students to the Rostrevor community for the first time: Philip A’Hang (Reception), Kiarn Vandenbergh (Year 8), Kyle Haseldine and Braxton Ahmat (Year 10), Matthew Motlop, Nathan Grant, Liam McDonald (Year 11), and Trae Rigney (Year 12). We also welcome Javadd Anderson (Year 12) returning to our community.

Our Indigenous students are enrolled from Reception through to Year 12, and include 35 boarders; these boarders come from towns and cities throughout Australia such as: Darwin, Alice Springs, Whyalla, Ceduna and Meningie.

The first few weeks of the school year have been busy for staff and students alike, as we finalise courses, organise books and stationery, and generally ‘find our feet’ and settle in again.

I would like to acknowledge the staff and thank them for their support and patience during this busy time.

Congratulations, Dale!

Towards the end of 2014 our Post-Secondary Pathways Co-ordinator, Sandra Mitchell, organised and encouraged one of our students, Dale Haynes, to attend the Australian Engineering Summer School in Canberra. Dale not only described the experience as “amazing”, but was also awarded a $400 ‘scholarship’ from Engineering Aid Australia and ‘The Hon RJL Hawke AC Capacity for Leadership Award’ for his contribution to the Summer School and to community.

This shouldn’t really surprise any of us as last year Dale also received the Rostrevor College Indigenous Student of the Year Award.

Congratulations to Dale and staff members such as Sandra who continue to not only support our Indigenous students, but push them to ensure they realise their true potential.

Welcome back to the start of 2015. I was very privileged to be on Sabbatical during the last part of 2014. I spent this time in Europe where the highlight was a thirty day retreat in the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius. It was a very fruitful time for me personally and I hope to be able to share some of my learnings as the year progresses.

Enculturation Day

On Monday the Year eight cohort took part in Enculturation Day. This day began in the Chapel and was centred around the song, “We are Standing on the Shoulders of the Ones who came before us”. The day took the boys through five different experiences including;

•a session in the Archives room with former staff member, Mr Bernie Tobin, who dressed up in the Black habit the brothers used to wear and showed the students many exhibits from past times in the school.

•discovering the significance of the windows in the chapel.

•an enthusiastic group of old scholar handballers demonstrating the game, with much talent shown up at the courts.

•a mentoring session with twelve Year 11 students who shared what Year 8 was like for them and encouraging the boys to talk about their early experiences.

•a Heritage Trail around the College where the students learnt some of the story of the College.

Finally the whole Year 8 cohort gathered on the oval at the close of the day to learn the War cry and have an inter house competition. Webb House narrowly defeated O’Brien in the final Chant off.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

Opportunities: We Make Them – You Are Invited to Take Them!

It is with great enthusiasm that I welcome all students and families to the new academic year. It seems fitting that 2015 is nominated as a Year of Opportunities. I can certainly identify with the challenges students face as I step into this new and exciting role for the year. Thank you to those of you who attended the Parent Information Evening. It was fantastic to see you there.

Teaching and learning are at the heart of every school’s core business. It is the powerful relationship between teacher and learner that assists students to achieve to the best of their ability. This week evidence of such productive partnerships was celebrated at Rostrevor College with the annual Dux Assembly. This ceremony acknowledges the academic excellence of our 2014 graduates and their outstanding results.

Of the thirty six Year 12 subjects offered last year, 99% of all grades achieved were either As, Bs or Cs. Furthermore 83% of all grades were As and Bs. In total our students achieved 181 A grades. Forty students achieved an ATAR above 85 while twenty eight students, 24% of the eligible cohort, achieved ATARs of above 90. Fifteen of our students accomplished results within the top 5% of student achievement with ATARs above 95.

In addition a total of eight students achieved thirteen A+ grades with Merit. There were thirteen grades of A+ with Merit and one A+ grade awarded. Two of our students achieved an ATAR of above 99. Our Proxime Accessit Ramzy Al-Moughraby achieved a result of 99.7. The Dux of the College for 2014 is Mahendra Chitrarasu with an outstanding score of 99.9. This places Mahendra in the top 0.17% of all South Australian student results. In recognition of this achievement, Mahendra was awarded a Governor of South Australian Commendation. This acknowledgement of academic excellence is reserved for just twenty five students out of more than 13,900.

Marylyn Marshall Acting Director - Teaching and Learning

These results belong to students and each and every learning partnership they have made with their teachers along the way - from their very first year of schooling to their last. I would like to express my gratitude to all teachers involved in all stages of these students’ learning journeys. Results such as these are also testament to the dedication and expertise of our teaching staff. In 2014 the subject areas of Accounting, Biology, Business and Enterprise, Chemistry, Mathematical Studies, Physical Education, Psychology, Research Project and Scientific Studies represented the A+ Merit awards. Of these thirteen grades, six came from Science subjects and special mention must be made of Mr Jeff Fischer who taught the only two students to achieve merit grades for Scientific Studies in South Australia in 2014.

Learning is not just the domain of the students at the College. Teachers’ continuous professional learning and development is a constant focus. This year commenced with phase two of our partnership with Flinders University and a whole school day of learning for our teachers based around quality curriculum design and differentiation. This is a focus for curriculum design and delivery that will be developed throughout this year and beyond.

After initial implementation last year, we have expanded and reinforced the well-received Study Skills Programs provided by Elevate Education. Teachers have already attended a training session and further student programs will take place during the course of the first term for students in Year 7 through to Year 11. A session dedicated to parents for Years 11 & 12 students will be held in the Kelty Theatre on 25 March between 6.00 and 7.00pm. You are encouraged to attend.

I advise parents to use the Parent Portal to learn more about your son’s learning. Attendance data, medical information and students’ achievement by task can be accessed from the site. New parents would have received correspondence containing their username and password, together with instructions on how to access the site.

Access to grades for assignments and comparative data has been available for some time. Parents will also have access to Virtual Classrooms where notes, presentations, worksheets, assessment plans and unit plans are available. Processes have been put in place to ensure that subject information available via the Parent Portal is relevant and up to date.

Finally, Hugh Allen said that jumping at small opportunities may help us to achieve much more than waiting for one big opportunity to come along. In every lesson that teachers design, there are a number of learning opportunities for students to accept so that they can develop their skills and achieve. I encourage our young men to jump at each of these opportunities with enthusiasm and dedication. I wish all of our students a successful academic year of opportunities taken and look forward to overseeing their progress and sharing in their success throughout the year.

Marylyn Marshall

SHUTTLE BUSESThe College seeks to determine if your son has siblings who attend an all-girls College in the area (Loreto, Mary MacKillop or St Peter’s Girls). The purpose of gaining this information is to ascertain whether or not the provision of a shuttle bus service in the mornings and afternoons would be of benefit to the community. Potentially enabling parents to have one drop off and one pick up at the school nearest their home.

The survey will take approximately 2 minutes to complete and can be accessed via the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WSLRR97.

This survey will close 4pm Wednesday 18th February, 2015

In my first Newsletter article for the 2015 Academic year, I wish to extend a very warm welcome to our new families and, of course, the young men that have commenced at Rostrevor College Junior Campus in various year levels. In saying this, I acknowledge especially our new Reception boys as they commence their education that will conclude 13 years from now!

As I commence my third year as Director of the Junior Campus I never cease to be amazed at the energy and excitement of our youngest Rostrevor Men as they adjust to life in ‘big school’. In fact, the ‘health’ of our community is often best tested by seeking out their opinions – something I do each year and have done recently.

I met with four young lads who have commenced this year as new Reception boys after having first seen them at our Transition days last year. Gone now are the anxious and concerned expressions they once carried with them, replaced by comfort and happiness. In speaking with Charlie Ciccozzi, Miles Fotheringham, Samuel Pollock and Fabian Villalta I was inundated with lots of feedback about the first few weeks of schooling. Playgrounds and Ovals were high on the list of ‘things we love about Rostrevor’ and they all reported they loved Mathematics – ‘you know, numbers and stuff like that!’ One had learned how to draw in three weeks, another had been working on tidying up his things and all were proud that they had begun to ‘write like the big boys do’.

Ms Una Petrou, our Reception teacher ‘extraordinaire’ has been working very hard to ensure the boys feel welcome, safe and are open to new learning – in bucket loads. One of the boys told me he feels great to have Ms Petrou as his teacher, ‘…because when I have butterflies flying around in my tummy, she makes them all fly away’. Another of the four stated that Ms Petrou was, ‘… caring, just like my Mum and Dad’ and all of the boys agreed they were having success at play time because Ms Petrou, ‘… helps us a lot and makes sure we have friends around us to help too’.

All of the boys I spoke to wanted to send out a message – ‘We think Rostrevor College is the best school and we are proud Rostrevor boys!’ The future is in good hands!

JUNIOR CAMPUS

Geoff Aufderheide Director - Junior Campus

Medical Information

Can I urge all parents/caregivers to ensure that you have accessed your son’s medical information page via the College Portal. Login details for the portal can be gained by contacting our IT services here at the College – [email protected]. If any of the information is not accurate or has changed in recent weeks/months, please email Meegan Roberts at the junior campus ([email protected]) and we will ensure it is updated. To streamline things this year we will not seek medical information when going on excursions - we will use the information on the Portal for medical advice. Therefore, ensuring the information is up to date and accurate now becomes very important! We will only seek out medical information for aquatic activities or if an external provider requires this information by law.

Pastoral Care

As always we’re here to help! If you have concerns about your son’s progress throughout the year, please contact his classroom teacher. Class teachers see the boys more often than anyone else and get to know them best, so I ask that you contact them in the first instance if you have academic or pastoral concerns.

If you have concerns about something and you feel it is at a College level, please contact me to discuss on [email protected] or 8364 8333.

Road Safety and Drop Of/Pick Up

I remind family members who collect the boys in the afternoon or drop off in the morning to please AVOID PARKING IN THE DROP OFF/PICK UP ZONE. We do this to provide a safe environment for our boys as they enter and exit the College and by not parking in this area we allow our families and local traffic a less stressful environment.

Parent Information & Parking

I sincerely thank all those parents and caregivers who attended our Information Evening last night. A quick count of numbers last night certainly indicates that this evening continues to be incredibly well supported by our families and community members and the message you all give the boys by attending is that their education is very important to us all. Thank you all for your continued participation.

I also mentioned last night our current parking situation and the impact on families. Given imminent building works across Kintyre Road, the ‘Womma’ Oval car park is now for the use of Junior Campus Families and Staff ONLY. This will be the case for the foreseeable future however we have been advised that at some point, access to this car park will be restricted. We will continue to provide information about possible closures and our alternative plans if things change.

Once again, welcome to the 2015 Academic Year.

CO-CURRICULAR NEWS

Fixtures

Please check the Rostrevor website under co-curricular for updated details of fixtures for Term 1.

Reminder that late cancellations due to heat (above 35 degrees for primary teams and above 37 degrees for middle and senior school teams) or wet weather will also be posted on the website under Co-curricular.

Additional weekly information in the form of maps is also be available on the Rostrevor website.

1st XI Cricket

PAC 75 all out from 40 overs (Jon Bishop 4/0, Ayden McGregor-Baptista 2/11, Harrison Rahaley 2/3)

Lost to Rostrevor College 6/76 in 30 overs (Ayden McGregor-Baptista 42, Angus Slack 20)

This was a very pleasing result considering that it was a State Knockout fixture against one of the better teams in the competition. We lost 4/2 late in our innings which turned an excellent win into a good win as some of the gloss was taken off the final result.

PAC won the toss and elected to bat in hot conditions, although the early start made it more bearable. The pitch had plenty of grass on it and it was never going to be a bad toss to lose. Our opening bowlers, Lochlan Roberts and Dylan Smith both bowled superbly and restricted any momentum that the PAC batsmen may have had. After 15 overs, PAC were 1/29 and our first change bowlers of Patrick Thomas and Murphy Short kept up the pressure and took valuable wickets. Ayden McGregor-Baptista and Harrison Rahaley looked dangerous and also managed to take regular wickets whilst conceding very few runs. Jon Bishop was introduced in the latter part of the innings and claimed the spectacular figures of 4/0 with a mixture of flight, turn and bounce. This was a crucial bowling spell and kept the PAC total down. Josh Richards, playing only his second game was tidy behind the stumps and claimed two good catches and a stumping to support the bowlers.

INDIA 20/20 INVITATIONAL

On Monday, the Rostrevor College 1st XI were invited to play against an Indian Dream Team XI which was comprised of school students from various Indian cities including Mumbai and Delhi.

Batting first, the Dream Team XI compiled 9/120 from their 20 overs including some big hitting towards the end of their innings. In reply, although we batted well in patches, we finished at 5/105 in an entertaining match. Best players for Rostrevor were Tom Kenny and Lochlan Roberts with the ball and Anthony Onofrio and Josh Richards with the bat.

Bill Trewartha Head of Egan House

In reply, we lost Edward Greenslade early to an excellent delivery. Angus Slack and McGregor-Baptista batted superbly and their partnership of 54 was pivotal in us winning the game. At 1/55 and 2/69, things were looking comfortable until some inspired bowling saw a mid innings collapse to leave us at 6/71. Harrison Rahaley and Jon Bishop saw us home in the 30th over.

With such a large turnover of players at the end of last year, this was a very pleasing result, especially with such a young team. We look forward to playing Pembroke next week.

I would like to congratulate the following students and Old Scholars for their achievements:

•Rostrevor has a healthy representation in the A league at the moment as old scholars Bruce Kamau and Paul Izzo are playing for Adelaide United and Marc Marino for Melbourne City. Additionally, Adam Piscioneri, Anthony Ture and Terry Theodorou are all in the Adelaide United youth team. We wish them all continued success throughout the season.

•Congratulations to Year 12 Lochlan Roberts who was selected into the Bank SA U17 Shield Team of the Year for his bowling following a successful January tournament where he claimed 10 wickets and finished one match with the impressive figures of 5/13.

The Rostrevor College Himalaya Expedition is planned to depart Adelaide on November 25th 2015.

Over 22 days we will work our way from Kathmandu to Lukla Airport (2840m) then northwards into the Mt Everest Region. While we will not be visiting “base camp” itself, we will summit the significant peaks of Gokoyo (4790m) and Lobuche (6119m) as we trek through the Sagarmatha National Park. Along the way we will take in the sights and sounds of this culturally and spiritually rich place on a journey that will no doubt have a life changing effect on those who participate.

While targeted at students in Year 10-12, the trek is open to all members of the College Community. In particular, the expedition will be a significant bonding opportunity for fathers, mothers and their sons.

If you wish to know more about this exciting opportunity I invite you to attend an information evening on Wednesday, 25th February at 7pm. To register your attendance for this evening or to find out more about the trek please contact Michael Vickery on 8364 8220 or email [email protected].
