After back-to-back, highly convincing losses, we came out and faced a strong Westminster side. Our expectations were high going into the game but, unfortunately, a nail-biting encounter with the Dragons proved too tough, with Rostrevor going down by four points. We started the game well, bringing the physicality to Westminster in the first half, but a lack of height proved the difference with their tall forwards being able to mark inside forward 50 and capitalise on their entries. Xavier Tranfa led from the front, whilst first gamer Beau Baldwin (Year 10) impressed with his ball winning ability and elite work rate. Similar to the previous weeks, we started the second half in a slow manner, making a number of execution errors by foot allowing Westminster to get a run on which proved too large for the boys to come back from. Harry Wright toiled all day down back, Tom Hill played well upon his return to the side and Regan Taheny competed well on debut, whilst Harvey Pedlar provided an option up forward in addition to his massive grab on centre wing. Our talls tried all day, with Macca Best and Year 10 Jack Hodges competing well against a taller opposition. Our key forwards presented well all afternoon, with Zak Lovegrove playing a pivotal role in kicking three majors, whilst Sam Rahaley on debut booted five, bringing the final margin back from 23 points at three-quarter time to four points at full time. Although the loss seemed demoralising due to a number chances to win the game in the final stages, many positives can be taken away from the weekend’s mature performance, with a strong sense of character being displayed through the team’s ability to stay in the battle and fight it out until the final siren. The Second XVIII headed into their third game full of confidence after coming off a hard-fought win against PAC and a nail-biting draw against arch-rivals Sacred Heart. This game was particularly important for the team as they looked to make their mark on the competition and they started off exceptionally in the first quarter.

Jett Boxer played his first game in over two years after suffering multiple setbacks with his knee and kicked the first goal of the game which saw teammates get around him from all over the field in what Coach Footner describes as “inspirational and arguably one of my favourite football moments in 14 years.” Lewis Matsis was exceptional on the wing kicking two goals and was supported by Year 11 midfielders Jesse Trevor and Ethan Langley who seemed to have the ball on a string. Up forward Hamish May made the most of his opportunities kicking five goals straight, three of them in the last quarter. Luca Stepic also used his physical presence to his advantage creating a contest up forward and kicking four goals. Skipper Sam Warren ventured down forward from back pocket to kick a nice goal on his birthday and Year 11 Eric Luppino proved to be hard to beat in the ruck, giving the Rostrevor midfielders first use. The Seconds look to continue their strong form and travel down to Henley this week to take on Saint Michaels at 12:30. (See below for First XI and Second XI Soccer Match Reports)

First XI Match Report vs Pembroke - August 5, 2020 Rostrevor win 3-2 Written by Noah McNamara (First XI Captain) The match against Pembroke was the first round in which three points were up for grabs. After a couple of missed opportunities in the first ten minutes, the Pembroke defence tightened. It took a long through ball from Luke Frangakis to Alessio Melisi who prevailed in a one-on-one against the Pembroke goalkeeper an ultimately chipped and scored. It was 1-0 but still a tight game. Some strong defending from the Pembroke outfit was keeping the Rostrevor attackers out until Gianni Bergamin made an overlapping run from right back to cross the ball and find Oscar Knight’s head and, just like that, it was 2-0. However, just before the break, a rocket of a shot from the Pembroke striker found the top left corner. At half time, the Rostrevor players and staff weren’t happy with their first-half performance, as the lacklustre showing from the Red & Black in the first forty minutes had allowed Pembroke to keep their foot in the door. For the majority of the second half it was a stalemate, nonetheless, the Red & Black outfit continued to push for a third goal which, with 15 minutes to go, was found through a left foot strike by midfield playmaker Noah Blazeka. The two-goal buffer was restored but, in the dying moments of the game, Pembroke found the back of the net again to reduce the deficit to just one goal. The referee’s final whistle brought the game to a close and, although it wasn’t the best showing, Rostrevor got the three points, which means its finals dream is still very much alive. Second XI Match Report vs St John’s Grammar Rostrevor win 2-1 Written by Fabian Di Iulio (Second XI Defender) After a heartbreaking loss against St Peters a week earlier, the Seconds were eager to find their names back on the winner’s board as they lined up against St John’s. An 8:15am kick-off in the unfamiliar territory of Belair saw the team up and moving early for the Red & Black on the freezing winter’s morning. After a brief warm-up, the Gaffer brought the boys in to talk tactics; 4-4-2 set up with a new addition of Erik Palushaj making his debut. From the opening whistle, the Rostrevor men looked very composed on the ball. On a small artificial turf pitch, the boys took the first ten minutes of the game to adjust to the conditions which were vastly different to our home of the Little Mem. However, there was never any doubt that the boys would adjust and conquer. Midway through the first half, after countless attacks on the St John’s defence, an opening from the opposition keeper saw Michael Callisto with an open net. Of course, when Callisto is given an opportunity he will take it and simply placed the ball in the net to gain the 1-0 lead. Due to the substantially smaller goals, the normally prolific strike force struggled to find the net again before the half time break. However, after an impressive half time speech from the Gaffer, who unloaded his vast experience onto his protégés, the fire reignited within the hearts of the Red & Black. Our confidence was brimming and it was only a matter of time before the men secured a second goal. The second half started with fantastic pressing which forced St John’s into playing direct football which was easily read by the wall in defence. Shortly after, Rostrevor’s good team build-up play resulted in a fantastic goal scored by the debutant, Erik Palushaj. With his footwork indescribable, Erik took on a player while nutmegging their captain in defence. The teammates could not help but stop and stare as the masterpiece unfolded. Completing the move with a beautiful finish in the bottom left corner, the boys surely believed it was curtains for St John’s.

However, St John’s had other ideas. Through the tired legs of Rostrevor and a lucky deflection from a corner, our opponents grabbed a goal back to reiterate that the job was not done. Despite their unbelievable attacking pressure, the Rostrevor defence held strong and was ably backed up by Daniel Malatesta with his amazing top corner saves, left and right, trying to keep the Seconds from another result which they did not deserve. After an intense battle for the badge of Palma Merenti on the front of our kits, John Coop’s men returned home to the winner’s column; a passionate win that was well deserved.
