Year 7 On Monday, 5th February our Year 7 students began their Secondary School journey with a day of nervous excitement. There were a significant number of introductions to be made as they met staff and peers, who will play a significant role in their lives, in the coming years. Their roles and responsibilities were established, as well as the seemingly endless opportunities they will have to develop spiritually, academically and physically. They met their Care teachers and classmates, and got off to a great start with their organisation. Thank you to all Year 7 Care Group teachers as well as the executive team, the Senior school Peer Support leaders and all of the staff who spoke to our Year 7 students about the positive experiences and opportunities available to them, as members of the College community. On Tuesday, 6th February the Year 7 group had their first mass at St Andrew’s Parish. It was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the Eucharist together as a year group. Thank you to Fr Marion for conducting the Mass and to Ms Christie for organising. Thank you also to our readers who volunteered and our students for participating in the service with such dignity. Mr Mat Davis Assistant Deputy Principal Year 7

Class of 2018 High Achievers Assembly On Wednesday, 13th February the College held the special award Winners assembly to congratulate those members of the Class of 2018 who achieved SCSA and State Awards. It was an excellent assembly with Anders Christensen, Dux and Victoria Pang, Proxime Accessit, speaking very well about their experience, and giving suggestions to the Year 10, 11 and 12 students on how to approach reaching their potential.

All staff and students involved thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to congratulate and celebrate the successes of the members of the Class of 2018 who attended.

Japan Tour The 2019 Japan Tour was filled with amazing experiences. After 18 months of planning, 36 students and 6 teachers embarked on a ten-day tour to one of the most beautiful countries on earth, Japan. The first sight of snow en route to Hakuba made all students and staff excited for what was to come for the next five days on the slopes. Hakuba Goryu was the first of two resorts where the group enjoyed skiing and snowboarding. Students had two-hour lessons at the beginning of the day where they were taught the skills needed to shred the amazing powder that we were fortunate enough to have. Over 30cm of snow fell throughout the five days, making ideal learning conditions. Two days were spent at Happo One, where the views from the top of the mountain were spectacular. By this time the students were confident with their riding abilities, allowing them to explore the mountain. The trip also included night skiing, a traditional Japanese drumming show, karaoke, Snow Monkey Park, and Tokyo Disneyland. We also experienced a full day tour of Tokyo which included the Meiji Shrine, Imperial Palace, Harajuku, Ueno Ameyoko, and Asakusa. Students not only learnt how to ride, but were exposed to such a diverse culture, and interacted with the beautiful and friendly Japanese people.

All students are to be congratulated on their exemplary behaviour throughout the trip and their constant positivity. A huge thank you to the staff members who organised the trip, Mrs Karolina Lasscock and Mr Neil Bright, Ski Trip Coordinators, and to staff who attended the trip – Miss Billam, Mr Boylen, Mr Davis, and Mrs Mungall. The memories that we have will never be forgotten.

Student Uniform and Grooming Thank you to all parents for supporting the College with the good standard of students’ uniform and grooming. Our Assistant Deputy Principals and Care Group Teachers consistently monitor standards as we believe that high standards of grooming is a reflection of the manner in which students undertake their academic work. In the coming weeks there will be a focus on:

• Students wearing College Jumpers to school on the cooler days, and not tracksuit tops or windbreakers.

• That boys with longer hair have it tied up above the collar and off the face.

• Boys shirt tucked in including to and from school.

• Correct black leather school shoes. It is important that students have all uniform items labelled with their name. We have significant lost property with no name labelling and hence it is not able to be returned to the owner.

Irene’s Service Learning

A huge thank you to Sidney Blake-Stanbury for the design of our new journals for 2019 and Khloe Seitz for the fabulous image on the back cover. They look wonderful. Service opportunities already available for our students, so it’s very important to check the daily notices, or contact the Campus Ministry Team for further information.

ATAR Visual Arts Excursion

On Tuesday, 12th February, the Year 11 and 12 ATAR Visual Arts class left the confines of the art room and experienced on-location drawing in Perth City. After riding the train from Butler to Elizabeth Quay, students noted observations of the world around them, which is the theme for their first semester’s project. Students gained inspiration from their experiences on the excursion and were able to put perspective drawing into practice, which they had learnt about the week before. The excursion involved drawing and photographing a number of locations including Elizabeth Quay, London Court, Forest Chase and Yagan Square. They witnessed the juxtaposition of old and new buildings, marking a significant development in our city and the interesting references to nature in recent building precincts. Overall, the group established a range of preliminary drawings and photographs as reference to assist with developing their idea for their final artwork and for their folio assessment. It was a highly enjoyable day with a fantastic group of students and we were blessed with stunning 28-degree weather.

Drama Club

Drama Club resumed this week for another thrilling year learning circus tricks and acrobatics with workshops from Yip Yip Circus Company. With over 50 students at Drama Club this term, students will be developing their circus skills to create fun skits for incoming audiences at Sounds of Sunset later this term. Drama Club has already been a huge success after its first session and we are looking forward to seeing our student skills develop.

The workshops gave students the opportunity to have a go on instruments they have never played before with our instrumental tutors, who are professionals in their field. Many thanks to the students who took part in the program. Each workshop was met with great enthusiasm and a willingness to have a go.
