1989 – VASHON-MAURY ISLAND LAND TRUST IS BORN

In December, a group convenes to save Whispering Firs Bog. Led by Emma Amiad, they form the first board and create the Land Trust as a non-profit corporation. The mission: “Conserving land to protect the natural ecosystems and rural character of Vashon-Maury Island.”

1990 – 1ST STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL BOOTH

The Land Trust sells lemonade and raises $1,940 toward the purchase of Whispering Firs Bog – the first Land Trust preserve.

1990 – “BOG FROG” INTRODUCED

In August, the Land Trust puts out its first issue of the Bog Frog Gazette newsletter to inform islanders of the fledging organization and encourage community support.

1992 – PROFESSIONAL STAFFING

David Warren (here holding daughter, Anna Rose) is hired to staff the organization. In 1995, he becomes the Land Trust’s first director.

1993 – EMMA AWARD

Emma Amiad is named the first EMMA award recipient for “her vision of seeing the Island’s need for an organized natural area protection program and her leadership in creating the Land Trust to fill that need”.

1994 – 1ST FOREST STEWARDSHIP CLASS Island landowners are taught a comprehensive eight-week course on forestry and forest planning. The class, a partnership with King County and the King Conservation District, continues to be offered.

Walking trails, clean water, wild places for birds and animals – these are the things that the Land Trust has conserved since 1989, when founding board member Emma Amiad

had a vision of protecting 1,000 acres on Vashon and Maury. Today, we’re at 1,147 acres and celebrating 20 years of going strong. Here’s to our past and future successes, all made possible through your continuing support and confidence.

1995 – 1ST CONSERVATION EASEMENT DONATED

Robin Hume and Robert “Colin” Manahan sign an easement protecting 15 acres of their beautifully forested property in Christensen Ravine, while then-president Trish Howard watches.

1996 – TREE SALE BEGINS

The Land Trust’s largest on-going fundraiser, the annual native plant and tree sale, has brought tens of thousands of seedlings onto the island over the years.

1998/1999 – SHINGLEMILL CAMPAIGN

Working with the Vashon Park District, the Land Trust launches a campaign to save and restore 122 acres along Shinglemill Creek and its estuary at Fern Cove.

1998 – FISHER POND DONATED

Bill Fisher gives the Land Trust 90 acres containing Fisher Pond and its surrounding forest. This island treasure remains the largest individual donation to date.

1998 – LAND TRUST BUILDING PURCHASED

The Land Trust raises sufficient funds to purchase the building housing its offices, the Carpe Diem school, and the community Heron room, from the Christian Science Society.

2000 – CHRISTENSEN POND CAMPAIGN

In a collaborative effort with Vashon Audubon, a successful Land Trust campaign results in the acquisition of a prime island birding spot.

2002 – MUKAI AND MEADOWLAKE PONDS

Another successful acquisition project nets two wetland habitats adjacent to the “State Lands,” home to a wide range of amphibians and birds.

2004/2005 – ISLAND CENTER FOREST CAMPAIGN

In its largest project to date, the Land Trust works with King County to permanently protect the 350-acre forest, formerly the “State Lands,” containing the island’s most extensive multi-use trail network.

2005/2008 – SHORELINE CONSERVATION

King County, Cascade Land Conservancy, and the Land Trust launch the Maury Island Conservation Initiative to protect Maury’s nearshore habitat. The first success is the Piner Point Preserve.

2006/2007 – SHINGLEMILL CREEK LOG PROJECT

The Land Trust undertakes its first major restoration project by putting 111 logs into the creek to restore healthy spawning habitat for returning salmon.

2006 – SUMMER INTERN PROGRAM

The Land Trust and Vashon Park District welcome their first crew of summer interns, hired through the Student Conservation Association, to work on habitat restoration projects.

2006 – TRAILS PROGRAM INITIATED

The Land Trust establishes a trail plan as a priority focus to encourage passive recreational enjoyment of its expanding array of publicly accessible preserves.

2007 – 1,000 ACRES PRESERVED

Realizing the vision of founder Emma Amiad, the Land Trust crosses the 1,000th acre conserved mark with a shoreline acquisition at Raab’s Lagoon.

2007/2009 – JUDD CREEK CAMPAIGN

Turning its attention to the island’s largest and healthiest salmon-bearing stream, the Land Trust raises $300,000 from the community to secure one mile of Judd Creek in historic Paradise Valley.
