Dining & Entertainment Herald Newspapers November 28 2012 www.CapeMayCountyHerald.com A33 Cape May Stage: Helping to Build a Better Community CAPE MAY - The spirit of giving continues through- out the holiday season at Cape May Stages Robert Shackleton Playhouse. This December, Cape May Stage is offering patrons discounts on theatre tickets to the hi- larious holiday production of A Tuna Christmas in exchange for donated food items for the Community Food Closet of Cape May, which serves families in need in Cape May. Last season, patron generosity was overwhelming and we are thrilled to be host- ing a food drive again this season, said Alicia Grasso, Cape May Stages market- ing director. The Commu- nity Food Closet does an outstanding job providing food and support to Cape May families and were honored to participate in their efforts. Now through Dec. 30, patrons can bring three non-perishable items to the box office and get a $10 dis- count off regular admission prices to see the holiday comedy, A Tuna Christmas. The Food Closet is specifi- cally requesting laundry de- tergent, small jars of jelly, small cans of soup, peanut butter, coffee, toilet paper, small boxes of cereal, and boxed pasta. The Equity theatre company asks that each individual bring a minimum of three non- perishable items or more to the box office to receive a $10 discount per ticket. Simply show up at the box office with your food items and pay for your ticket at the door. Visa/ MC/Discover accepted. Tickets are on a first come, first serve basis and are pending availability. Ad- vance reservations are not available. In these tough times, we all want to do our small part to help those in need, continues Grasso. We encourage the entire community to join us as we make a positive impact on those who need it. 954 OCEAN DRIVE, CAPE MAY, NJ Between GSP & Wildwood Crest on the Bay in Harbor View Marina 609-884-5444 Restaurant and Bar Restaurant and Bar Breakfast Breakfast with with Santa! The performers are the Whittington Family of Port Norris, NJ and the South Jersey Community Men’s Gospel Choir. WheatonArts Folklife Center Director, Iveta Pir- gova, explains that the origin of spirituals can be traced back to the slav- ery period of the African Americans who created these remarkable sacred songs. Although numer- ous rhythmic and sonic elements of the spiritu- als can be traced to both West African and European sources, they are a musical form that is indigenous and specific to the religious and social experience of African Americans in the United States. Many of the spiritu- als are performed in a “call and response” singing style that relates them to the work songs of the early 19th century, while others are known to have carried double meanings associated with the Underground Rail- road practices. Pirgova explains, “Spiri- tuals later evolve into a more sophisticated form called Gospel. There are different types and versions of Gospel and many of them utilize choirs, incorporate distinct musical improvisa- tion, with piano and/or Hammond organ, drums, bass guitar or other instru- mental accompaniment. Earlier forms of Gospel fuse musical elements of both the spirituals and the blues while its more recent developments incorporate elements of Hip Hop, R and B, or Rap. Spirituals and Gospel not only reflect re- ligious, aesthetic and social values of the community, but also have significant impact on other musical genres and have become an integral part of the Ameri- can musical heritage and cultural identity.” The Whittington Family of Port Norris, NJ. Folklorist and author Dr. Rita Moon- sammy of Tabernacle, NJ, states, "Whittington's his- tory and artistry are rooted in a community story that is not well-known outside the maritime towns of the Mid Atlantic region. They have been a significant force in passing on the tradition of singing a cappella spirituals that have been important to the African American com- munities of oyster shuckers in such towns as Crisfield, MD, and Port Norris, NJ. While these songs are sta- ples of African American churches, they hold ad- ditional meaning for oyster shuckers as the music of the workplace. The incorpora- tion of the spirituals into the workplace occurred partly because shuckers work in different styles and at different paces. “Carl’s Kris Kringle” will accept donations at each performance to help Volunteers in Medicine of Cape May County.

Volunteers in Medicine is a free medical clinic serv-ing low income residents of Cape May County with no access to Health Insurance. VIM has served more than 4,000 individuals with more than 24,000 office visits, all at no charge to the patient.

Even the most basic healthcare is often out of reach for the thousands of Cape May County residents without health insurance. Each day, Volunteers in Medicine of Cape May County fi nds a way to help. It costs VIM $495 to care for a one patient for a year. It’s Cape Island Theatre Company’s goal to raise that amount at each of the six performances of “Carl’s Kris Kringle.”

“Carl’s Kris Kringle” will be presented at the Old Grange Restaurant by Tony Clark, 735 Seashore Road, Cape May (Cold Spring), on Saturdays and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. from Dec. 1 through 16. Doors open at 2:30 pm Seating is limited and available on a fi rst come-fi rst serve basis. For information please call the Cape Island Theatre Company, 609-408-6595 or Historic Cold Spring Vil-lage, 609-408-6595.

Historic Cold Spring Village Offers Homespun Holiday Weekends

Historic Cold Spring Vil-lage opens its Homespun Holidays season with Was-sail Day, Dec. 1, from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. The Village paths come alive with the sounds and smells of win-tertime at this free event. Select buildings will also be open where guests can en-joy hot beverages and treats served by historical inter-preters in period clothing. Visitors can meet Father Christmas in the Country Store from 12-2 p.m. and enjoy a horse-drawn car-riage ride throughout the festively decorated Village grounds for a small dona-tion.

Holiday traditions contin-ue each Saturday and Sun-day in December through the 23rd. The Country Store will be open from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. and stocked with unique holiday gift ideas including traditional-ly-processed wool, artisan crafts for the home, books, hand-knit caps, wooden toys and old fashioned candy. Father Christmas will visit the Country Store weekends from 12-2 p.m., taking pictures and meeting with kids of all ages. Guests can enjoy carriage rides throughout the Village and visit the Welcome Center for a model railway exhibit from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.

When the holiday shop-ping and sightseeing is done, families can get into the spirit of the season with Cape Island Theatre Company’s family-friendly play, “Carl’s Kris Kringle.” The play will be presented at the Old Grange Restau-rant by Tony Clark on the grounds of Historic Cold Spring Village at 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays from Dec. 1 - 16. (See page A33 for details).

Historic Cold Spring Vil-lage is a non-profi t, open air living history museum that portrays the daily life of a rural South Jersey community of the Early American era. Its mission includes the preservation of 26 historic Cape May County buildings, history education and promoting heritage tourism. The Vil-lage is a museum for all sea-sons. During the summer months, interpreters and artisans in period clothing

preserve the trades, crafts and heritage of “the age of homespun.” From October to May, the emphasis is on teaching history through school trips to the Village, classroom visits by the education department and interactive teleconferences with schools throughout the United States. The Vil-lage is located on Route 9, three miles north of Victorian Cape May and a mile and a half west of the southern end of the Garden State Parkway. For more information, call (609) 898-2300, ext. 10 or visit the Village website at www.hcsv.org.

pound or gallon, and so each one attempted to go as fast as he or she could. Singing the spirituals helped them keep up their own pace by keeping up their spirits. As Beryl Whittington describes it, ‘One guy over there, say, would start up singing and then up and down the way the others would pick it up. It would help you keep going when you were tired or discouraged.’ Whitting-ton and his children have contributed to preserving their heritage within the community and educating the public in a number of ways.”

South Jersey Community Men’s Gospel Choir. Ac-cording to group member Barry Ballard, "The growing need for men to become more involved as role mod-els in their churches and communities as well as my love for Gospel music inspired me to work to-ward establishing a South Jersey Community Men's Gospel Choir. Currently, the choir has 66 members who represent 18 various churches in the South Jersey community. Our goal is to be more than a group of singers. We currently visit hospitals, nursing homes, and veteran's homes to spread God's Word and to comfort and support those who are shut-in and are less fortunate than some of us. At this time, most of the mu-sic for the SJCMGC is what is referred to as traditional "Black Gospel" music. This is, generally speaking, a

compilation of improvised hymns (Jesus the Light of the World, O Come All Ye Faithful), and revamped Negro Spirituals (Ride on, King Jesus). Some of our musicians are also writing compositions for the choir. This type of music leans heavily on strong vocals, call and response, and hand-clapping. While a cappella music can be included in this genre, we typically rely on the familiar sounds of the Hammond organ, piano and/or keyboards, lead and bass guitars, drums, and a saxophone."
