    Automatic $ampling

Doedijns b.v. in the Netherlands has been

designing and building pipeline samplingsystems since 1995, using probes and samplersfrom FM !td "#$.%. &n December '((',Doedijns ac)uired the sampling activities of

FM. Doedijns no* manufactures the FMsampling devices itself plus complete automatic

pipeline sampling systems to the customer+sspecifications and in accordance to international

    standards, e.g. &-1/1 and 0M D.1//.

For our systems *e can offer fi2ed or retractableprobes, in3the3line or fast3loop samplers andfi2ed or variable volume receivers. amplereceivers *ith high3energy internal mi2ing areavailable for handling high vapour pressuresamples *ithout loss of light ends.

    s a supplier of in3line mi2ing systems, Doedijns

has e2tensive 4no*ledge of selecting systemsre)uired to condition the pipeline contents topermit representative sampling.

    (ntroduction to sampling

utomatic sampling allo*s the )uality "e.g. *aterand sediment content% of a pipeline transfer to be

established. 0his together *ith the metered)uantity is used to calculate the product volume

for commercial and fiscal transactions. 0hedominant application is for crude oils, *hichcommonly contain *ater and sediment.

Four steps essential to achieve an accurateanalysis of the pipeline contents are as follo*s

    13 6ipeline conditioning7mi2ing to ensure free

*ater and sediment are evenly distributed acrossthe pipeline diameter before entering the sample

or ta4eoff probe. 8orrect positioning of sampleprobe is essential for a representative sample.

'3 2traction of small samples "grabs% atflo*7time related intervals under all conditions"changing pressure and temperature%

3 Maintaining the integrity of the receiver

    contents by ade)uately mi2ing before sub3samplee2traction

3 ccurate analysis of the sub sample.

    0he t*o basic techni)ues for ta4ing samples from

pipelines are the fast3loop system and the in3the3line system. :oth are described in &-1/1 and0M D.1//. Doedijns offers both types.

    Fast loop or Bypass$ampling

0he fast loop uses a cell sampler mounted in a

bypass loop "typically 1;N:% through *hich arepresentative portion of the pipeline product ispumped. 0he cell sampler e2tracts a successionof small samples "grabs%, typically 1 ml andpumps these into sample receiver. relativelysmall pump is re)uired to drive the fluid through

    the loop.

0he fast3loop sampling system has a number ofadvantages over direct inline sampling especially

    for *et and dirty oils

3 &nlet area of the ta4eoff probe isappro2imately < times larger than an in3the3line sample probe. 0his means that thedemands on pipeline mi2ing are lessstringent.

3 !arge bore sampling probe and flo* line are

less prone to bloc4ages3 0he loop pump provides e2tra mi2ing

3 &mproved accessibility of the sampler forservicing

0o obtain &so4entic flo* in the fast loop line aflo* control valve, bypass system or motor

    fre)uency controller is used.

application.3 6robe isolation valves as specified by user.

    $ampling probes

&n order to ta4e samples at an optimum position

in the pipeline a sample probe of some form or

other is re)uired. 0his may be for bypasssampling systems, for gas sampling systems orfor ta4ing manual samples.

Doedijns manufacture a standard range of probesbut can also offer custom3designed units to suitthe customer+s individual needs e.g. pipeline si>e,pressure rating, no>>le inlet si>e, high pipelinevelocities, fi2ed or retractable, number and style

of inlet ports, *ith or *ithout sample returnconnection.

    $ampler

&n both fast loop and inline sampling the sampleris actuated by a solenoid valve *hich in turn is

driven by a controller, generating either a flo*

proportional or time based signal, depending onthe process.

ampler actuation is usually air driven ho*everin many circumstances *here air is not availableor is undesirable, a hydraulic driven actuator is astandard alternative.

    $ample receivers

amples collected *ith theautomatic fast3loop or in3linesamplers are transferred to asample receiver for storage.
