Blind people playing baseball? Kids oncrutches sprinting on a track? Kids inwheelchairs trying a slalom? Impossible, you say? Well, you're wrong. All of theseactivities and more go on annually at the18th Annual Empire Games for thePhysically Challenged, this year atMitchel Athletic Complex in EastMeadow. Youngsters, ages 5 through 21,competed in track and field, swimming, archery, table tennis and slalom. Medalswere awarded to competitors in first, sec-ond and third place in their events.

The games started on Thursday andended Saturday. The weather was ideal. On Saturday, after an evening of thunder-storms, the air was clear and the sun wasso bright it was blistering. But it didn'tphase the kids and their parents. It didn'tstop the most unusual game of softball 1°have ever seen.

Beeper BaseballTwo teams of adult men, one group

blind, the other sighted, opposed each otheron the diamond. The game approximatedsoftball, but with its own special equip-ment and its own set of rules. First, to evenout the playing field, so to speak, the sight-ed team wears goggles obstructing theirvision. The ball has a beeper in it so the bat-ter can hear it coming. The pitcher, stand-ing about 20 feet from the batter, precedeseach pitch by shouting, "Ready, Pitch."Standing so close, the pitcher wears a foot-ball helmet for protection, because whenthese batters connect, they really "paste thepelota," as one announcer used to say.

Other variations: The batter gets fourmisses and can let three pitches go by. A"run" means reaching one base safely. Justto .complicate matters a little, the battermust run either to first base or to third baseafter he hits the ball, depending on whichone is buzzing. The buzzer on each basehas a different sound. "Let me hear thebases," one batter called out as heapproached home plate. Incredibly, a blindleft fielder caught a smash just from the

sound of the ball coming. It's quite a game.Dana Wedin, 25, a Hofstra University

student from Levittown cheered on theyoung runners on the track from the stands, with her red dress billowing in the lustybreeze. The special education and an ther-apy student said she had come to see thechildren and how they were enjoying theevent. "Everyone seems to be having somuch fun," she added. "I'm glad to haveshown up to have seen these unbelievablekids participating in great games."

The red flag came down and the youngwheelchair athletes crossed the startingline. One of them had a "Standing wheel-chair," or a walker on wheels. When therunners raced, one of them was held up byan assistant, but the athlete was using herown feet to move forward.

"I'm very emotional about the wholething," said Joseph Patti, 70, of Bellerose,Queens, about his first visit to the Games."You can see all the heart that goes into it.Look at all the effort! The energy that'sbeing expended...After every race, I'm intears." He pointed out six people runningout onto the track to encourage a runner."This place is steeped with love, care andcompassion. People should come out andsupport it. It's a neighborly thing to do.[Disabled athletes] have the same needsthat all of us have to be loved, cheered andsupported."

Mr. Patti's late wife was in a wheelchairin her later years. "To be here as a specta-tor has touched me very deeply," he said.

Mr. Patti said he had attended the eventbecause a woman in his prayer group wasa volunteer at the Games and her son hadbeen an athlete in prior years.

Colm Cullen of Dublin, a wheelchair-bound official of the Irish team, .said the17-member team included "kids from allover Ireland," north and south. The oldestathlete is 19, the youngest 14. The team isstaying at Hofstra University untilTuesday^ Traveling here with the teamwere four police officers, two volunteersfrom the Irish air force, and one formermember of the air force.

Before embarking on my reportingcareer more than a decade ago, I was theassistant principal assigned to the uppergrades at PS 107. Built in 1927 or there-abouts, the five-story edifice was probablythe most handicapped-inaccessible build-ing ever designed. You had to =walk upthree steps just to get into the lobby. About three years before I left, since theelementary school population>in the areawas declining, a decision was made toretrofit the building to make it handi-capped-friendly. All of the oval doorknobswere replaced with handles. The doors tothe toilets were widened to accommodatewheelchairs and grab-bars were installed. And, it may be hard to believe, but it istrue, a brick shaft was built (it went rightoutside my "fourth-door office window)and an elevator was installed.

It seemed at the time that this was a typ-ical bureaucratic boondoggle, because, quite obviously, we had no physicallyhandicapped children, and I was just aboutthe only one who used the elevator. However, here I am after all these years, and I meet Jane Turetsky, who has been the

Some amazing dadsYou have always admired your father, just as those

around him have. No one else in the world could ever beas wise, brave and caring. No one else could make youfeel so much responsibility for your actions.

Your husband, too, is an amazing dad; so much aboutparenting you learned from him as the two of you builta family together. Each day brings some new surprise;you learn to treasure the small joys together.

Your brother is another example to follow, keeping afamily tradition of hiking and camping together. Yourcousins are fine coaches in the game of life, teachingmuch more than how to make a ball do what you wantit to.

But the most mind-blowing experience is to watchyour son become a dad, first by being a loving olderbrother, then by building a teamship with his wife.

You watch them working hard to build careers and ahome, fighting against reverses with determination. Youadmire their patience, intelligence and dedication andlove to see the happiness their child can give in return.

To see your tall, grown son take his little one by thehand is such a wonderful thing. He has become a mostamazing dad, and you admire him so much.

Santino holds town meetingby Courtney Allison

Anthony J. Santino, HempsteadTown Councilman, held a Baldwin/South Hempstead Town Meeting onMonday, June 3.

The meeting provided a forum forthe townspeople to express their ideasand concerns about the town's affairs.Santino holds these meetings with thetown and the representatives of eachdepartment three times a year in aneffort to hear what the community hasto say. Meetings are designed to helpimprove the quali ty of life ' inBaldwin. In a welcoming address,Mr. Santino shared his pride in thetown, praising the recent improve-ments in the town, such as BaldwinPark, the addition of a skateboardingarea and the overall infrastructure ofBaldwin's community.

Issues raised by the townspeoplehad to do with pollution in the canal, parking lot concerns, safety issues inBaldwin Park, dangerous driving onGrand Avenue, waste managementand the dredging of local waterways.Mr. Santino addressed each of theseor referred the question to a depart-ment head who could respond more

adequately.One concern that the residents

seemed to feel particularly stronglyabout is pollution in the BaldwinCanal. One resident made very clearhis disapproval when he angrilypleaded for the canal to be cleaned up.Councilman Santino expressed regretover pollution, but said that since it isprivate property, the Town ofHempstead cannot spend public tax-payers' money to clean it up.

"I think the town meeting went verywell,-" said Gert Bauer, of Baldwin. "Ijust wish they would settle that canalissue."

"Santino is doing a heck of a goodjob," said Peter Mietenkorte ofBaldwin, while also praising the townmeeting. "This is the only way for thedepartment heads to hear what wehave to say."

Mr. Santino was pleased with themeeting as well. "It went .great.These meetings are a great opportuni-ty for the town to present their con-cerns. We have a very good trackrecord of getting right to the heart ofthe matter and discussing it produc-tively. I'm very proud of that."

Honors were handed out to some verydeserving senior athletes at the annualsports award program last Thursday.

The Saunders Award is given annuallyto the senior boy and girl who have beenmost dedicated to his or her sport. Theclass of 2002 has been such an outstand-ing group that the coaches ended up'witha double lie for the Saunders awards.

Marissa Trachtenberg's goal was toscore 100 goals and earn a college schol-arship. To do this, she knew she needed to

lose weight, and work on her upper bodystrength because division 1 collegelacrosse is very demanding. She workedout all summer, lost 35 pounds, and didweight training with Coach Brown. Sheplayed first home on the lacrosse team, scored her 100th goal in the semi-finalgame and will be on a full scholarship inthe first division 1 class at Stony Brooknext fall. In addition, she made thenationally-ranked cheerleading squad.atFHS during the fall and winter seasonsand earned membership in the Nationalhonor Society. "Marissa is truly a hard

Sheattended volleyball camp and played on aoutside team to improve her individualskills and sharpen her competitive edge.A member of the National Honor Society, peer tutor, and an athlete-helping-athletesparticipant, she has shared her talentswith many. She will be attending SUNYBuffalo in September.

A free safety on the football team and

He is a super dedi-cated and hard-working young man whois always first on the field. "He is alwayslooking to improve some aspect of hisgame," reflected Coach Cellan. Pineyro says thanks

To The Leader:On Tuesday, May 21 I was elected to

the Freeport Board of Education. Thiswas a landmark victory since I will bethe first Latino to serve in this capaci-ty. My success in this election was notan easy task but one that was neces-sary. It is my intent to add a newdimension and voice to our schoolcommunity.

I realize that there are and will bemany obstacles interfering with theprocess of educating our children. Myagenda is quite clear; it is to provide

the children of Freeport with the verybest educational system. With yourhelp and support this can and will beaccomplished. I would like to thankyou for your votes and your support ofthe budget.

In the words of President AbrahamLincoln, "a house divided cannotstand." Therefore, let us put our houseback in order and stand united for thesake of our children and our communi-ty-

I look forward to serving you andtrust that collectively we can make thedifference for the future of our chil-dren.

Dodd students make 9/11 quiltStudents at J. W. Dodd Middle School in

Freeport found a way to heal the pain of theSeptember 11 tragedy by creating a quiltthat honors our heroes, cries for lives lost, and celebrates the strength of our greatnation.

The quilt, which is dedicated to the res-cue workers and civilians that lost theirlives, was unveiled in a special ceremonyat the Middle School on May 22 at 2:15p.m. Guest speakers included FreeportMayor Bill Glacken and RaymondMaguire, executive director of the FreeportFire Department. The school presented Mr.Maguire with a plaque that said, "You areour heroes. Thank you for all your acts ofkindness and bravery."

Each of the 130 students in CarolynJimenez's ten art classes created one squarefor the quilt. Then Ms. Jimenez sewed all

the squares together. Students used pastels, colored pencils, cloth iron-ons, glitter andstars to express what the tragedy meant toeach of them. Images of American flagswaving, eagles crying, and hands held outin healing friendship were sewn together toform one powerful image of gratitude, hope and healing. Across the center, fourhands sign the words "I love you," eachhand bearing the number of one of the fourplanes downed that day.

"Everyone who sees the quilt is over-whelmed by the amount of talent and workand caring and love that went into it," saidPrincipal Mike Campbell. "It will be some-thing'that is here and part of the Dodd tra-dition long after you are gone."' Ms. Jimenez plans to take some studentrepresentatives on tour, bringing the quiltto firehouses throughout New York City. .

coordinator of children with special needsat PS 107 for the past 17 years. She waswith Bob Bricker, a special educationteacher at the school, with 57 children, some with crutches, some with canes on arunning rack, having just completed a raceafter which I, sound of limb, would havebeen winded.

The entire event is rhost user-friendly.Huge flys, shading tables and chairs, wereset up all over, for groups'from as far awayas Westchester County. Several BOCESwere represented, as was a large groupfrom Massapequa. Motorized wheelchairswent whizzing by constantly. Some of theyoungsters driving them seemed moreadept than I do behind the wheel of my car.

Climbing a wallCan you imagine a child with a physical

disability climbing a wall? I spoke to~Ruthie, a seventh grader who had just done

it the second time. "It was scary at first,"she said, but now it's OK. "Each child isfitted out with a harness to which a rope isattached that goes through a pulley at thetop of the four-sided 25-foot high wall pro-vided by LIPA. As the child climbs fromfoothold to foothold and handhold to hand-hold, an adult gently maintains the tensionon the rope so that should the child slip, heor she does not fall, but can regain footingand keep on going. As in every venue, theadult is encouraging and assisting. At thetop, the child can push a red button, and asiren goes off. What a thrill for a child whomay barely be able to walk to make thatsound for all to hear!

Sponsored by the New York State Officeof Parks, Recreation and HistoricPreservation, the Empire State Games forthe Physically Challenged include a clubthrow, a precision throw, a shot put and adiscus throw. Swimming events andwheelchair basketball were on Friday atthe Nassau Community College gym.

The games grew out of the 1984International Games for the Disabled (nowknown as Paralympics). In 1984, theGames were held here. In 1985, New Yorkbecame the first and only state to offer afree program of competition. Participantsare blind, visually impaired, deaf, hearingimpaired, spinal cord injured, amputees, have cerebral palsy and muscular dystro-phy, dwarfism, arthritis and others. Thegoal is to provide a means to develop con-fidence and a positive self-image byachieving one's personal best.Approximately 2,000 children participatedat three venues in 2001.

Perhaps the spirit of the participants isbest summed up by the newspaper distrib-uted at the games, which is, as its banner

states, "for, by and about the disabled." It iscalled, "Able."
