Talent returns, but lack of experience and depthalong the line of scrimmage is a concern forSamford as a new era of Bulldog football begins

It was on Nov. 28, 1992, that a Samford football team lastplayed in the NCAA Division I-AA Playoffs. Despite losing 56-21to perennial playoff participant Delaware, the game marked thesecond straight post-season appearance for the Bulldogs. A yearearlier in the 1991 playoffs, Samford marched past NewHampshire, 29-13, and James Madison, 24-21, setting up amatchup with yet another I-AA power, Youngstown State. The high-powered Samford passing game went cold in the frigid tempera-tures and swirling winds of Ohio, and the Bulldogs fell 10-0 to theeventual 1991 I-AA Champions.

A decade later, first-year head coach Bill Gray begins a newera of Samford football, armed with the goal of restoring theprogram’s winning tradition. The Bulldogs are looking to improveon last year’s 5-5 season, in which they posted a 4-1 mark in thelast five games with Gray as interim head coach. The road won’tbe an easy one, as Gray and his staff begin with some concernsto address, mainly surrounding the lack of experience and depthon the offensive and defensive lines. Plus, the Bulldogs face anambitious 11-game schedule that includes an early road trip to I-A Baylor and late-season trips to future Ohio Valley foes MurrayState and Southeast Missouri State and a finale at perennial I-Apower Youngstown State.

The team is not without strengths to build upon, however, asGray points to his offensive skilled positions and athleticism ondefense to provide a solid foundation.

“We have a very talented group of athletes in our skilledpositions, especially in our receiving corps,” says Gray. “And wehave athletes on defense who can get to the ball and make plays. Our success will begin with our experienced players playing totheir capabilities, but I think some of our younger players whomade strides in the spring will certainly have opportunities to con-tribute.”

A total of 53 lettermen return for the Bulldogs, including 22players who have experience as starters. That list of 22 includes10 on offense and 11 on defense.

The Samford offense sparked the team in 2001, and it couldbe the team’s trademark again this season. As the Bulldogs went4-1 under Gray’s leadership in their last five games, the offensescored 35 points and totaled 419 yards per game.

The concern for Gray’s offense, however, is also his concernfor the defense - who will get it done up front? Only two offensivelinemen, senior Andrew Gunn and junior Mitch Welborn, haveplayed more than one year. Senior transfer Rob DeLoach andsophomore Eddie Mason will likely see a great deal of time, along with converted defensive lineman Chip Adams. Center BradBaker, injured in spring practice, is expected to be 100 percent bythe beginning of fall practice.

If the line can provide time, the Bulldogs have two very capa-ble quarterbacks in sophomore Ramon Nelson and senior JoshKellett. As a true freshman in 2001, Nelson threw for 1,466 yardsand 13 touchdowns in nine games. His 32 completions in the sea-son finale against VMI set Samford’s single-game completion

record and earned him his second I-AA Independent OffensivePlayer of the Week honor of the season. Additionally, his passingyardage was the most by a Bulldog QB since 1997 and his 13touchdowns were the most since 1992.

As for Kellett, his 2001 season was cut short by a broken armin the fifth game of the season. A fifth-year senior, he has started25 games in his career and is seventh in school history in totaloffense with 3,220 yards (2175 passing, 1045 rushing).

Whoever the signal caller, getting the ball to senior receiverAryvia Holmes as many times as possible will be a top priority. AI-AA All-Independent Selection and All-American candidate,Holmes caught 74 passes for 1,042 yards and eight touchdownsin 2001. He also averaged 104 yards per game receiving andnearly 150 yards of total offense per game with duties as areturner on special teams. He holds the Samford single-seasonreceiving records for yardage and receptions and needs 629yards to become the Bulldogs’ all-time receiving leader.

Along with Holmes, much is expected from a deep corps ofreceivers that includes playmakers Efrem Hill, Rob Shaw, DuwanNorthcutt and Adrian Horstead.

In the offensive backfield, Jason Ogletree returns for his thirdseason and second as a starter. The big, powerful back is joinedby the complementary quickness of speedster John Williams, andhopes are that Fred Gilliam and Garrick McCarty will return 100percent from injuries in the spring.

Daniel McClurkin returns at tight end, along with Will Groganand converted offensive lineman Payton Sides. McClurkin caughtseven passes, including two touchdowns, last season, and Grogan’sspeed is expected to benefit the Bulldog passing game.

Defensively, the Bulldogs will be led by a pair of I-AA All-Independent selections, senior defensive back Robert Evans andjunior linebacker Derrick Wheeler. The duo were the top tacklerson last year’s unit that finished 25th in fumbles recovered,Wheeler with 120 tackles and Evans with 91. Wheeler’s total alsoranked him 10th nationally in the NCAA defensive statistics.

While numbers indicate depth at defensive line, experience isthin.

“Coming out of spring, what concerns me most is a lack ofdepth and experience in positions where those two factors arevery important,” says Gray. “Especially on defense, we have toget key contributions up front and up the middle to make us astronger unit.”

Senior ends Blake Hall and converted linebacker DaroldWilliams will be the bulwarks for the front line, with significantcontributions expected from junior Ross Newton and sophomoresThad Henderson and Colby Williamson.

At linebacker along with Wheeler, senior Matthew Foresterhopes to shake off an ankle injury and return to the form thatearned him a starting job as a freshman. The Bulldogs also have aplethora of speedy outside backers/defensive backs that is led byAdam Sallaz, Justin Hale and Russell Delk.

In the secondary, the Bulldogs hope for a quick return ofinjured senior cornerback Tony Tucker. Leo Randall and CharlesWilliams provide stability at the corners along with Tucker, whileseniors Matt Jackson and Blake Roberson will fill the shoes ofdeparted second-team All-Independent safety Jonathan Clark.

Senior Chip Walters returns to handle the place kickingduties, while he and Ty Neil should battle for kickoff responsibili-ties. Gray is looking for a marked improvement from the Bulldogspecial teams, particularly the punting unit this season. The positionwas open for all comers in the spring and incumbent JonathanReynolds may have to hold off others in the fall.

The Bulldogs also lost return man Gary Reed, who finishedseventh in the nation in kickoff returns with 27 per return, and who

helped the team finish 19th overall nationally. There should not betoo much of a dropoff, however, as Aryvia Holmes among otherswill take over return duties. Holmes is also expected to serve asprimary punt returner.
