Repo t f om England By Morag Marti

I spe t the 2002-03 academic year o leave from Brockport o a research fellowship at the U iversity of Warwick, E gla d. Though the time off was mea t for me to do more research for my book a d to start writi g, I was also u der co tract to teach o e class at the U iversity. I chose to teach a special course called Sweet Ecstasy: The Cultural History of Drugs from 1450-Prese t. It was very popular, a d I will teach it at Brockport i the fall of 2003. I had ever taught i Britai before (though I had bee a stude t ma y years ago at the U iversity of Edi burgh), a d it was quite a eye-ope i g experie ce. I had to adapt to a very differe t way of lear i g, gradi g a d teachi g.

British stude ts o ly take courses i their major (i this case history), the classes last the full year a d the BA is give after three years of study. I lectured to the stude ts o ly o e hour a week, as the professors at Warwick had do e a study a d fou d that the less you meet with stude ts, the more they work. I'm ot sure of this, but it does make the professors' jobs easier. Every other week we also met i small semi ar groups of i e stude ts each to discuss readi g, but there is ot a culture of "talki g" i class i E gla d as there is i the US, so ofte it was like pulli g teeth.

The readi g is very differe t as well. Most professors give huge lists of all the releva t texts for a give subject (up to a page lo g for each semi ar) from which the stude ts are mea t to pick a d choose, readi g as much as possible. There are o graded assig me ts duri g the course of the year, o ly a lo g paper a d three-hour exam i Ju e for which the stude ts get six weeks to prepare. This mea s that overall, the co scie tious stude ts do their work a d are motivated o a weekly basis, but the lazier o es do othi g u til the summer term a d the crackdow . To elimi ate bias, two professors grade the papers a d exams a o ymously. This mea s that professors ca ot mark stude ts dow for abse ces or poor semi ar participatio .

Overall, I i troduced my stude ts to a assig ed text (we could all talk about the same thi g si ce we had all read it) a d a more relaxed lecture style, both i ovatio s they liked. I lear ed to trust stude ts more with their time, expect more broad-based readi g a d grade more fairly. I fou d that the much repeated maxim applies - America stude ts lear very little about a lot of thi gs a d British a lot about very little - yet if both are do e with e ough critical thought the stude ts flourish i to well-educated, well-rou ded i dividuals. A d, whe it comes dow to it, British stude ts spe d just as much time at the pub, procrasti ati g or sleepi g-i as their America peers.

The o e big differe ce is that all British U iversities are public a d practically free, thus very few of stude ts there have to work a full-time job as well as study a d socialize!

"Dr. Leslie, I Presume" By Bruce Leslie

The ew British Library was the u likely sce e for a reu io of a

alum us a d a faculty member. Worki g o the catalogue computer 3,500 miles east of Brockport, I was take aback whe a familiar looki g you g ma came up a d I heard "Dr. Leslie, I presume." Well, at least words close to that. The you g ma tur ed out to be Bob Brow '91.

Iro ically I first got to k ow Bob i Lo do i 1989 whe he was the o ly sophomore admitted to the Lo do Social Scie ce Program based at Bru el U iversity. He retur ed to Brockport to complete his degree, particularly studyi g with Joh Kutolowski. We last saw him at graduatio i 1991.

Brow co ti ued his studies at SUNY Alba y, receivi g a masters i history. His thesis o the social history of radio has bee published as Manipulating the Ether: The Power of Broadcast Radio in Thirties America (McFarla d Press, 1998). It received the Choice Outsta di g Academic Book of 1998 i History of Commu icatio Award.

Next stop for Brow was the Syracuse U iversity doctoral program where he has specialized i moder British history. I additio to his studies, he has taught at SUNY O eo ta a d at LeMoy e College, a d eve directed a graduate semi ar at Syracuse. His dissertatio topic is "Britai a d the Spa ish I flue za Epidemic of 1918-1919." His research has bee facilitated by a fellowship to study at the Wellcome I stitute i Lo do , just arou d the cor er from the British Library. He hopes to begi full-time teachi g i fall 2003, either i Great Britai or the U ited States.

"The Voice of Betty Crocker" (Cont f om Page 2)

"how to do it" America cookbook writte for average middle-brow wome who wa ted to provide healthy a d appetizi g meals for their families. However, the ew medium of radio proved perhaps her most powerful tool.

Husted created the “Cooki g School of the Air,” a 15-mi ute mix of recipes a d homespu philosophy broadcast i itially from half a doze big city radio statio s across the cou try. At the New York City statio of the Red a d Blue Network, Betty Lutz became Betty Crocker i 1927; at that poi t, she was o e of several perso ificatio s of the Ge eral Mills ico .

I 1934, ow married a d amed Betty Bucholz, she was chose to be the si gle voice of Betty Crocker for coast-to-coast broadcasts across the ew NBC Radio Network. For the ext 17 years she broadcast three times a week from Chicago, her lilti g, clear speech patter k ow to wome across America. They se t her up to 5,000 letters a week, a d the Betty Crocker Cooki g School of the Air e rolled more tha a millio members. Bucholz a d her husba d revised a d edited each script the ight before the broadcast, while Betty tried out a d modified the recipes at home. The broadcasts came from her perso al experie ces, a d spoke directly to the mai daily ritual a d respo sibility of her millio s of liste ers. She gave practical, how-to advice a d e dowed the ordi ary task of cooki g with sig ifica ce a d éla d’esprit.

Duri g World War II the Betty Crocker Cooki g School of the Air cooperated with the War Food Admi istratio . Bucholz hosted a radio show with First Lady Elea or Roosevelt which sought to boost America wome 's morale at home a d give them advice o cooki g with ratio ed food supplies. Her daily radio scripts from these broadcasts i corporated war-time values with specific me u suggestio s, such as "Budgeti g the Food Dollar" (Black Mid ight Cake) a d "Food i the Moder Ma er" (Bisquick-Spam combi atio s). Ma y programs quoted specific letters from liste ers, alo g with Betty Crocker's respo se, a d i cluded music from the Ge eral Mills Choir or the playi g of the weddi g march from Richard Wag er's "Lohe gri ."

Duri g her Chicago years, 1934 to 1951, Betty Bucholz was part of the great NBC radio studios i the Chicago Mercha dise Mart. Amo g her a ou cers were Hugh Dow s a d Do Ameche, while her frie ds a d colleagues i cluded the casts of Jack Armstrong: the All American Boy, Betty and Bob, a d Ozzie and Harriet. I 1951 she moved to New York a d took the role of "A e Marshall," Campbell Soup's atio al media voice. She worked for the Eise hower preside tial campaig i 1952, retired from broadcasti g i 1955 a d the devoted herself to the Readi g for the Bli d program o Lo g Isla d a d i Co ecticut. Her radio tale ts co ti ued to serve well; whe the Co ecticut State Library for the Bli d a d Physically Ha dicapped i Hartford evaluated her 1977 auditio tape, the report described her "rich, atural voice timbre, eve cade ce a d clear articulatio ." The auditio report co cluded with the words "do 't lose her"!
