Head Coach Bobby Petrino

2004 Louisville Football Prospectus • 6

Head coach Bobby Petrino brought bigdoses of offensive experience, enthusiasm, leadership and discipline when he was namedhead coach at the University of Louisville onDecember 23, 2002.

In 2003, Petrino brought all that to thetable and more, guiding the Cardinals to a 9-4 record, the school’s sixth-straight bowlappearance and winning season and led anoffense that set numerous records.

Petrino’s nine wins were the most-everby a first-year head coach at U of L, butmore importantly, he gave fans anentertaining product that brought them totheir feet. Louisville was 5-1 at home, averaging a staggering 36.2 points per gameand 489.2 yards of total offense.

In his first season as a head coach,Petrino’s no-nonsensestyle and emphasison teaching hascatapulted the

Cardinal programinto the

nationalspotlight.

TheCardinalsraced outto one oftheir fastest

starts inschool

history, runningto a 7-1 start thatgave theprogram its firstnational rankingsince openingthe 2002 seasonat No. 17.Known as one

of the topoffensive mindsin the country,

Petrino upheld hisreputation, as theCardinals ledConference USA intotal offense, rushingand scoring.Nationally, the Cardswere just as high, finishing fifth in totaloffense, 10th inrushing and 15th inscoring offense.

Petrino and hisoffense also re-wrotethe record book, setting 10 schoolrecords. The Cardinalsscored a school-best 450 points, rushed for ateam-record 2,966 yards and totalled a schoolmark for total offense with 6,355 yards.

Petrino oversaw an offense that set sixConference USA marks, including the recordfor most total yards in a season and game, average yards per play, yards per carry, rushing touchdowns and all-purpose yards.

In a win over Houston on November 22,the Cardinals amassed a school record 779yards of total offense, which was also thesecond-highest total in the country.

Several individual accolades were alsoaccomplished in 2003, as Stefan LeFors, J.R.Russell and Ronnie Ghent were each firstteam All-Conference USA selections.

A new chapter in the proud history of

The Petrino family: Kelsey, Katie, Becky, Bobby, Bobby and Nick

Cardinal football and the beginning of whatis sure to be a memorable second run forPetrino at U of L was kicked into high gearon December 23 when Jurich introduced theoffensive mastermind as the 19th headfootball coach at the University of Louisvillebefore a capacity crowd in the press box atPapa John’s Cardinal Stadium.

Petrino’s first priority when hired was tosign players and assemble a staff. Hired lateDecember, Petrino managed to land atalented recruiting class to join the Cards in2003, and a young, but experienced staff thatwill help the Cardinal football program reachtheir ultimate goals.

The 43-year-old Petrino is no stranger tothe Derby City, having served as the Cards’

offensive coordinator during the 1998season when U of L led the nation in scoringand total offense.

During that season, Petrino’s high-octane offense rewrote the Cardinal recordbook, establishing school records for scoring, scoring average, touchdowns, passingtouchdowns and total yards while helping theCards post the top turnaround (six games)among Division I-A schools.

The 1998 squad scored 444 pointsand reached 60 or more points on threedifferent occasions. U of L defeatedCincinnati, 62-19, Western Kentucky, 63-44,and East Carolina, 63-45.

“This is an exciting time for theUniversity of Louisville,” said U of LAthletics Director Tom Jurich on the dayPetrino was hired. “When Bobby left us fouryears ago I sat him down and told him thathe’d make a great head coach some day ... I

did not know it would happen so fast or thatit would happen here. He is one of thenation’s finest young football coachingtalents and we are confident that he will beable to build on the foundation laid by JohnL. Smith and his staff and take this programto the next level.”

Petrino returned to U of L after afour-year hiatus in which he spent twoseasons coaching the quarterbacks andanother as the offensive coordinator for theJacksonville Jaguars of the NFL.

During his tenure with the Jaguars,Petrino tutored Mark Brunnell to three of hisbest passing seasons in his illustrious career.Brunnell threw for 3,640 yards in 2000,which was the second-highest total in teamhistory, and 3,309 yards in Petrino’s onlyterm as the offensive coordinator with theJaguars in 2001.

After his three seasons in the NFL,Petrino took over as the offensivecoordinator during the 2002 season atAuburn University.

It did not take long for Petrino toput his stamp on the Auburn offense as theTigers improved to No. 31 nationally inscoring average (31.25 ppg) and No. 38 inscoring offense (396.67 ypg) after ranking

No. 86 nationally in scoring offense(22.18 ppg) and No. 73 in totaloffense (358.82 ypg) during the2001 campaign.

The Tigers finished the 2002season with a 9-4 mark and led theSoutheastern Conference in passefficiency and third downconversions while also ranking thirdin the league in scoring offense, rushing offense and total offense enroute to 13-9 victory over Penn Statein the Capitol One Bowl.

Before taking the reigns of theCards’ offense in 1998, Petrinoserved as the offensive coordinatorat Utah State from 1995-97,transforming a program whichaveraged a little more than 300 yardsper contest into an offensivejuggernaut which established a USUrecord with 468.5 yards of totaloffense per game during the ’96season.

Prior to joining the USU staff,Petrino spent the 1994 season at theUniversity of Nevada as offensivecoordinator and quarterbacks coach. His one season with the Wolfpacksaw his unit rate second nationally inpassing and total offense, averagingmore than 330 yards passing and 500

THE OFFENSE#3 J.R. Russell #17 Stefan LeFors #23 Lionel Gates

Heading into last season, there wereplenty of question marks surrounding theUniversity of Louisville offense as three-timeConference USA Player of the Year DaveRagone had graduated, leaving the reins to anuntested Stefan LeFors.

What transpired was one of the bestoffensive seasons in the history of the school.Behind the left arm of LeFors and a potentrushing attack, the Cardinals set the schooland conference record for total offense(6,355) and finished fifth nationally with anaverage of 488.0 yards per game.

As the Cardinals prepare for their secondseason in head coach Bobby Petrino’soffensive system, the scary thing is that theCardinals could even be more potent, as ninestarters and 20 letterwinners return on theoffensive side of the football.

QUARTERBACKSAs has been true in recent years, the

Cardinals enter the 2004 spring campaignwithout a question mark at quarterback.LeFors was an All-C-USA first teamselection, his first as a starter, throwing for3,145 yards and 17 touchdowns. His 3,145passing yards was the third best in schoolhistory, while his touchdowns were tied forninth.

The 6-0 left-hander rose from obscurityto become the focal point of the Cardinalattack. The native of Baton Rouge, La., ledthe league in total offense (273.1 ypg) andwas second in passing efficiency (145.46).But more importantly, LeFors completed 61.3percent of his throws and tossed just 10interceptions. Teamed with standout seniorwide receiver J.R. Russell, LeFors helps formone of the most dynamic quarterback-receivercombinations in the country.

LeFors also showed an ability to use his

legs to get out of trouble, setting the schoolrecord for rushing yards for a quarterback, running for 405 yards and three scores.

Sophomore Justin Rascati earned theprimary backup role as a red-shirt freshmanlast season, playing in five games. He’s astrong-armed accurate passer, who sawlimited action in 2003. Rascati completed 14-of-24 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 57 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown scamper against UTEP.

RUNNING BACKSThis group will definitely be one of the

strengths of the 2004 squad and should be oneof the positions of interest as the springseason unfolds.

The Cardinals return its top three rusherswho helped set the school mark for the mostrushing yards in a season (2,966). Afterfinishing near the bottom in the nation inrushing in 2002, the Cardinals placed 10th inthe country with an average of 228.2 yards agame. The trio of senior Lionel Gates, juniorEric Shelton and sophomore Michael Bush

combined to run for 2,110 yards and 27touchdowns.

Gates, a big, powerful runner withbreakaway speed, headlines a talented groupof backs. Gates led the Cardinals in rushingwith 817 yards and 11 touchdowns, andaveraged 5.8 yards a carry. In a possiblepreview of things to come, Gates capped the2003 season with an 88-yard touchdown runand 128 yards in the bowl loss to Miami, andalso rushed for a career-best 140 yards andfour touchdowns in a 66-45 win overHouston.

Shelton, in his first season with theCardinals after transferring from FloridaState, was the power back for the Cardinals.Despite missing three games with a neckinjury, the 6-3, 245-pounder still managed790 yards and 10 scores. The native ofLexington, Ky., recorded four 100-yardgames, including a 151-yard performance inthe season opener at Kentucky.

The wild card in the backfield is Bush, who lined up at quarterback, wide receiverand running back last season. Used mainly as

a running back late in the season, theversatile Bush managed to run for 503yards and six touchdowns andaveraged 6.2 yards a tote. Out of thebackfield, the former Mr. KentuckyFootball caught 17 passes for 240yards and a touchdown.

With a mixture of power andoutstanding speed, Bush is one of thetop athletes on the team. He showcasedsome of that ability last season, running for 137 yards against Houstonand 125 versus Cincinnati, includingan 81-yard burst for a score against theBearcats.

Sophomore Kolby Smith isanother talented player that PetrinoMichael Bush

2004 Louisville Football Prospectus • 12

must find time for in a crowded backfield.Playing at the fullback position last season,Smith ran for 131 yards and a touchdown andaveraged 7.3 yards a carry. He had surgery inthe offseason and will stay out of contact.

Red-shirt freshman Reggie Bradshawdidn’t see game action last season, but is ahard-runner with sprinter’s speed, who willget a long look this spring.

D.J. Kamer and Smith split time atfullback last season, but Kamer has graduatedand Smith will play more running back.Senior Adam McCauley was moved tofullback last season and will get a lot of repsthis season, while James Jackson, whoplahyed linebacker last season, will make themove to offense this spring.

WIDE RECEIVERSThe Cardinals are blessed at wide receiver

with some of the best talent in the country.Fortunate to have everyone back from lastseason, the Cardinals add the likes of a majorcollege transfer and a top-flight red-shirtfreshman to a stable of outstanding passcatchers. The Cardinals have so much talentand depth at this position that the onlyproblem facing the coaching staff is figuringout how to get so many talented athletes onthe field at once.

Senior J.R. Russell, an All-Americacandidate, returns after posting one of the topseasons in school history. The 6-3 seniorrecorded 75 catches for a school-best 1,213yards and eight touchdowns, closing theseason with three straight 100-yard games. Heended the 2003 campaign with a seven-catch,144-yard and three touchdownperformance against Miami in the bowl game.Russell enters his final campaign with 113catches for 1,651 yards and 12 touchdowns inhis remarkable career.

Senior Joshua Tinch is another talentedreceiver, who looks to improve on disappoint-ing numbers last season. One of the fiercestcompetitors on the team and never afraid tomake the tough catch over the middle, Tinchcaught 26 passes for 401 yards and a score. He will miss spring practice due to hiscommitments on the men’s basketball team.

Junior Broderick Clark hopes to usethis spring to get healthy and improve as awide receiver. Nagged by a high hamstringinjury last year, Clark caught 23 passes for313 yards, but seemed to be slowed down latein the year due to the injury. Clark, one of thetop kick returners in the conference, is healthyagain and hopes to regain his freshman formthat saw him rank in the top five nationally inkickoff returns.

Petrino found a way last season to utilizejunior Robert Haskins into the offense, andthe 5-6 wideout didn’t disappoint. Arguably

one of the fastest players on the team, Haskinsmade big plays, catching eight passes for 115yards, but also rushed seven times for 93yards, including a 64-yard touchdown run ona reverse against Houston.

Senior Tiger Jones is a possession-typereceiver who has plenty of game experienceand has shown through the years that he’scapable of making plays.

The Cardinals red-shirted a talentedgroup of wideouts in junior Montrell Jonesand red-shirt freshman Harry Douglas.

Jones transferred last year from Tennes-see and worked with the scout team. Thecoaching staff is excited about getting Jonesout on the field with the first unit and gettinghim involved in the offense.

As a freshman with the Volunteers,Jones, caught 22 passes for 306 yards in2002, and is an explosive, big-play receiver, who will no doubt give the Cardinals one ofthe deepest units in the league.

Douglas posseses sprinter-type speed andowns great hands. He had a solid red-shirt

season, and is ready to fight forplaying time.

The big loss for the Cardinalscomes at tight end where four-timeAll-C-USA performer RonnieGhent and Richard Owens havegraduated, leaving the Cardinalswith one tight end with gameexperience in sophomore WayneRiles. Used mainly in a blockingrole and in certain short-yardagesituations, Riles must be a factorin the Cardinals precision passinggame.

OFFENSIVE LINEMENThe biggest question mark and problem

area for the Cardinals heading into the 2003season was the offensive line. However, askthe coaching staff what the biggest surprisewas, and they would say the offensive front.

After yielding 46 sacks in 2002, theCardinals front five allowed just 13. Thisgroup also helped the Cardinals set the schoolmark for rushing yards in a season andaverage yards per carry (5.7).

The Cardinals lost two starters in thetrenches in center Dan Koons and guard JerrySpencer, and will have to make some changesthis spring.

However, the good news is the Cardinalshave two All-Conference performers on theline to build upon. Junior weak tackle TravisLeffew and junior Jason Spitz each earnedsecond team All-C-USA honors and are twoof the most talented linemen in the league.Leffew has made 26 straight starts and is oneof the most athletic linemen on the squad.Spitz has started 14 straight at weak guardand is one of the toughest and most skilledplayers upfront.

The other returning starter is also a solidplayer in sophomore Renardo Foster. At 6-6,Foster is a mammouth specimen who made asuccessful transition to the offensive side ofthe football to start 13 games at tackle. Aformer defensive tackle, Foster was named tothe All-C-USA Freshman squad.

Junior Kurt Quarterman, who weighsin at 360 pounds, will take over at strongguard and junior Bubba Marshall will alsocompete there for playing time. Junior-collegetransfer Jeremy Darveau is another 300-pounder who’ll get time at tackle, but couldother positions if needed.

Former offensive guard Will Rabatinwill move this spring to the center positionafter spending most of his career at guard.Rabatin is a technically-sound lineman andwill compete with sophomore P.J. Tavarczkyfor the starting nod this spring. Red-shirtfreshman Danny Barlowe is a hard workerand will likely backup Spitz at the weakguard.

THE DEFENSE

#48 Bobby Leffew #56 Marcus Jones #54 Robert McCune

The Louisville defense, which struggledas the season progressed last year, returnseight starters and 23 letterwinners to a unitthat needs to improve if the Cardinals haveaspirations of a Conference USA title.Louisville allowed an average of 428.0 yardsper game and 27.8 points, but yielded anaverage of 44.7 points per contest in the finalthree games of the year. This unit is a yearolder and a year stronger and is expected torebound from a disappointing second half ofthe season.

DEFENSIVE LINEThe defensive line lost just one player on theline in defensive tackle Scott Lopez and havea great deal of talent and potential upfront, and could be a much improved unit.

Heading this group is senior defensiveend Marcus Jones, one of the top passrushers in Conference USA. Jones, a secondteam All-Conference honoree, led the team insacks with 10 and had 17 tackles for loss.Jones is a high-energy player who providesrelentless pressure on opposing quarterbacks.Jones was fifth on the team in tackles with 62and could be in for a big season in newdefensive coordinator Mike Cassity’s scheme.

Junior Elvis Dumervil is an athletic defensiveend who is coming off a 28-tackle season andcould be even better as he enters the spring. He also added six tackles for loss and twosacks. Chad Rimpsey played in a reserve rolein 2003, but is expected to be a consistentperformer along the line this year. Playing in12 games, Rimpsey registered 23 tackles andtwo tackles for loss. Red-shirt freshmanShane Bailey is a gifted youngster whoexpects to compete for playing time and willuse this spring to learn the defensive system.Senior Bobby Leffew will also be at tackle, but will likely miss spring drills due tooffseason surgery. Converted tight end ChadJorgensen is a quick rusher off the edge andshould use the spring to continue hisdevelopment.

Junior Montavious Stanley, who startedthe year at defensive end, was moved todefensive tackle in the bowl game and willlikely stay there for spring practice. The 6-4,290-pounder might be more efficient insidewith his size and speed.

Senior Tyrone Saterfield needs torebound from a disappointing second half ofthe year. At 311 pounds, Saterfield could be amajor factor upfront to reverse the fortunes ofthe Cardinal defense. Last season, Saterfieldrecorded 31 tackles and four tackles for loss, and failed to record a sack.

Sophomore Amobi Okoye, who was theyoungest player in football last season, will bea player to watch this spring. Having had afull season and a winter workout session, the6-1, 317-pounder could be a player to watchout for after a year of maturity. Playing in 13

games, Okoye tallied 17 tackles playinglimited time.

LINEBACKERSIf Louisville is going to improve this

year on defense, the Cardinals need thelinebackers to step up and have a big season. This unit lost one senior starter in Rod Day,but returns two other starters in senior RobertMcCune in the middle and junior BrandonJohnson at outside linebacker.

McCune, a third team All-C-USAselection, posted a career-high 143 tackles in13 games. He posted eight games of 10 ormore tackles, including 19 in an overtime loss

Brent Johnson

Tyrone Saterfield

2004 Louisville Football Prospectus • 14

to USF. McCune is one of the strongest andfastest players on the squad, and will need tohave another big year for the Cardinals.

Johnson’s a tall-lanky backer who wasused a lot as an outside rusher a year ago. Herecorded 50 tackles, but was also third on theteam in sacks with three.

The weakside linebacker spot will bewide open with a pair of youngsters compet-ing for time this spring. SophomoreDeriontae Taylor was a factor last season onspecial teams as a freshman, but will get along look this spring to win a job at line-backer. The coaches are extremely high onconverted quarterback and red-shirt freshmanPreston Smith. Recruited to play quarter-back, Smith was moved to linebacker mid-way through the season and will see a lot ofaction this spring. Senior JonathanJackerson and red-shirt freshmen WillieJohnson and Matt Sanders will use thisspring to compete for playing time next fall.

SECONDARYLouisville boasts a solid nucleus in the

secondary with three starters returning to thelineup.

Senior Antoine Harris, who convertedfrom wide receiver last season, emerged earlyin the season and played well in his first goround on defense. Boasting excellent speed,Harris posted 51 tackles, had six passbreakups and tied for the team lead ininterceptions with three. Still learning theposition, Harris will benefit from having a fullspring at that position and could be ready toemerge at this spot when fall camp begins.

Sophomore William Gay received a lotof experience last season and has the potentialto be a dominant corner for the Cards for thenext three seasons. The native of Tallahassee,Fla., played in 11 games, including four as astarter, recording 33 tackles and one intercep-tion. Transfer Antoine Sharp, who workedout at wide receiver last year, will make theswitch to corner this spring. An excellentathlete with good speed, Sharp could throwhis name in the mix and add depth to this unitwith a good spring. Sophomore Gavin Smartopened the season as a starter, but playedmainly in nickel situations after suffering ashoulder injury that cost him his startingposition. Playing in nine games, Smartrecorded 17 tackles, but helped the Cardinalsopen the season on a positive note by

returning an interception 41 yards that helpedset up a Cardinal touchdown in a 40-24 winover Kentucky. Smart will likely miss springpractice due to injury. Senior J.T. Haskins isa valuable special teams player, but also filledin on nickel and dime situations a year ago.Red-shirt freshman Early McCray is alsosomeone to keep an eye on this spring. Atalented youngster from Douglas, Ga.,McCray is an intriguing prospect and has thepotential to step right in and be a very solidcover cornerback.

Safety was a big question mark for theCardinals heading into the 2003 season withyouth and experience fogging up the picture. In 2004, this group looks to be pretty solidwith both starters returning and a key playerreturning from an injury.

Senior Brent Johnson emerged lastseason, leading the club in tackles with acareer-best 116 stops. A hard hitter, Johnsonclosed the year in impressive fashion, averaging 14.0 tackles in the last four games, including 14 in the loss to Miami. Johnsonwas also third on the team with eight tacklesfor loss and also added four pass breakups.

Senior Kerry Rhodes posted a career-high 82 tackles in his first season as a starter.Rhodes recorded three interceptions, returningone for a touchdown. Rhodes, at 6-3, is a bigtarget in the secondary and had a solid year.

Sophomore Abe Brown is built in thesame mold as Rhodes and could see moreaction this year, especially on special teams.Brown playedsparingingly in2003, but willneed a good springto crack therotation.

Red-shirtfreshman MalikJackson is a hard-hitting strongsafety that thecoaching staffexpects big thingsfrom in 2004.Jackson showedon the scout teamlast season thathe’ll deliver a bighit on anyone, andis expected to be afactor this spring

for playing time. Junior Jon Gannon isanother talented player, who is trying torebound from injuries. Gannon sat out all oflast year, but will go full go this spring to seewhere he is physically. If healthy, Gannon’stoughness and knowledge of the game will bea welcome addition in the secondary.

SPECIAL TEAMSThe Cardinals will have to replace one of

the school’s and conference’s topplacekickers with the graduation of NateSmith. Spring practice will be an opencompetition for the kicking job between fourplayers with no game experience.

Arthur Carmody is an untestedyoungster who red-shirted last season, but hasplenty of potential. Carmody is an All-Stateperformer who is one of the team’s mostaccurate kickers, and will use the spring togarmer much-needed experience.

Todd Flannery is another player withpotential, and will get a long look this spring.Flannery is valuable because he can kickoff, kick field goals and handle the puntingchores. Rob Zarrilli is also in the mix, whichwill create a competitive battle this spring.

Sophomore Brent Moody will resumehis duties at punter after a solid first season.Kicking in 12 games, Moody averaged 39.5yards a punt and placed 12 inside the 20-yardline. Flannery will also compete at punter thisspring.

Clark will continue his role at kickreturner. Slowed byinjuries last season,Clark’s numbers dippedto 19.5 yards a returnafter finishing second inthe nation in thatcategory in 2002.

Douglas, MontrellJones, Bush, Bradshaw,Gates and Antoine Sharpwill each get a lookreturning kicks thisspring.

Robert Haskinstook over the punt retunduties and did a solidjob, averaging 7.7 yardsa return. Petrino and hisstaff will also look atMontrell Jones, Gay,Harris and Douglas thisspring as punt returners.
