Welcome to Halifax and to Countdown 2004 –the CIAA’s 41st Annual conference.

When we started planning this conference way back inOctober 2003 I had high expectations of what wecould offer members. I’ll be candid – the conference hassurpassed what I was hoping for and I have mycommittee members to thank.

Everyone went full throttle and we’ve ended up with agreat program, the best ever sponsorship participationand excellent registration numbers. Special thanks to Karen Byrne, Geoff Shields, Annette Pohle, SandraTaylor, Catherine Fleming and Pat Ristich.

Our keynote speaker is Dr. Roberta Bondar, a trueCanadian hero who has excelled in so many fields. She’llshare her observations with us in her talk – PersonalFulfillment through Growth, Change and Challenge.

Doug Hogan, Vice-President and Chief Financial OfficerThe Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company

Doug joined The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company in 1992 after spendingfive years in public accounting with Price Waterhouse. He was appointed to his currentposition in 1997.

A long-time member of Insurance Bureau of Canada financial committees, Doug is alsoactive in the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants’ Task Force, which is monitoringthe Insurance Project of the International Accounting Standards Board.

Doug holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto and obtained his C.A. designation in 1989.

Joel Baker, PresidentMSA Research Inc.

Market-Security Analysis & Research Inc. (MSA) was founded in 2004 and is a Canadian-owned, analytical research firm focused on the Canadian insurance industry. MSA’s missionis to provide Canada’s insurance professionals with comprehensive financial information,analytical tools and rigorous research.

Joel has extensive experience in the analysis of insurers, having followed the Canadian p & c and life/health industries for over eleven years. He also maintains a keen understanding

of U.S. and global insurance and reinsurance dynamics. Prior to launching MSA Research, Joel served as GeneralManager of A.M. Best’s Canadian office, and before that, as General Manager of TRAC Insurance Services Ltd.

Joel is a Chartered Insurance Professional, holds an M.Sc. (1991) and a B.Sc. (1989). Joel is a Level III candidate inthe CFA program and is a member of The CFA Institute, The Toronto Society of Financial Analysts, The InsuranceInstitute of Canada and the Canadian Insurance Accountants Association.

Grant Kelly, Director, Policy Development and Assistant Chief EconomistInsurance Bureau of Canada

Grant began working in IBC’s Policy Development department in 1994. He has beeninvolved in a wide range of issues, including bank retailing of insurance products, reducingthe impact of natural disasters on Canadian communities, financial reporting, tax, insuranceavailability and auto insurance reform across Canada.

He helped create the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction, including tripling the industry’sfunding by securing partnerships with the Ontario Government and the University of Western

Ontario. Grant’s current responsibilities at IBC include developing a co-ordinated framework to support auto reformefforts across the country. He also acts as Secretary of the Financial Affairs Committee.

Grant holds a graduate degree in Economics from Wilfrid Laurier University and is a Chartered Financial Analyst(CFA). In September 2004, he received the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation. Grant lives inGeorgetown with his wife and two sons.

Thomas is the Global Co-ordinating Partner for one of the firm’s largest global financialservices clients and one of Canada’s largest public companies. Prior to rejoining Ernst &Young in 1998, Thomas was involved in venture capital/investing activities.

Robert Landry, President & Chief Executive OfficerZurich North America Canada

Robert Landry serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of Zurich’s Canadian operations.

Robert joined Zurich in 1971 as a claims adjuster and eventually held the position ofbranch manager for the London, Ontario, office. His senior management positions includethat of Zurich Canada’s senior vice president for field operations and President of the company’s Personal Financial Solutions division. He was appointed to his current positionon January 1, 2002.

Robert is a Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP).

Sharon M. Ludlow, Vice President, Finance & AdministrationLiberty International Underwriters Canada

Sharon has worked in the life and property and casualty insurance industries for more than10 years, primarily in the finance area. She is responsible for the financial, tax andregulatory compliance at Liberty, a commercial property and casualty insurer for corporateCanada. She is also responsible for financial, tax and regulatory compliance for the Libertygroup in Canada. In her previous experience, she played a key role in the demutualizationof a major life insurance company and launched a consumers’ on-line insurance quotationservice company.

Sharon graduated from the University of Toronto, with a Bachelor of Commerce and earned her CA designation in1992. She also holds an FLMI designation. Sharon has actively volunteered for Junior Achievement of Canada and has held Treasurer and President and Chair of the Board positions for Life-Bridge Childcare Centre and VON.

Dave has over 15 years experience in the taxation area. He is a partner, heading upKPMG’s Sales and Local Tax practice for Eastern Ontario.

Dave advises a broad range of clients on sales tax issues, with a strong focus on financialinstitutions. He has performed sales tax reviews for insurance companies and has advisedthem on many technical issues related to the GST and financial services. He has developedseveral tax planning opportunities for insurance companies and other financial institutions.

Geoff Shields, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial OfficerChubb Insurance Company of Canada

Geoff joined Chubb in 1994 after obtaining his Chartered Accountant designation and gaining four years auditing experience articling with a public accounting firm. He has beenChubb Canada’s senior finance executive for nine years. During this time he has successfullyexpanded the Finance department’s breadth of responsibilities from its base in corporateaccounting to accommodate the company’s growth to a $700-million dollar corporation.

Geoff is responsible for all traditional finance functions for Chubb Canada, includingaccounting, tax, cash management, reinsurance, and planning and budgeting. He also manages other operationalareas, including actuarial and travel and facilities management, and acts as primary advisor to the CanadianBoard of Directors and its various committees.

He is a member of several industry associations, including the CIAA and the Treasury Management Association.His hobby of Barbershop singing has led to his participation on the boards and committees of many charitableorganizations.

Diane joined Peace Hills at its inception in 1982 and was appointed to her position in 1990.

Diane has held many positions on various boards and committees. Currently she is adirector of the Alberta IBC Committee, the General Insurance OmbudService, the Board ofProperty and Casualty Insurance Compensation Corporation, the Board of Governors ofGrant MacEwan College, the Insurance Institute of Canada, and a member on the AlbertaFacility Committee. In the past Diane was Chairman of the Alberta IBC Committee, aDirector of the Edmonton Police foundation and a member of the Alberta Facility Committee.

The Canadian Association of Insurance Women presented Diane with the Insurance Woman of the Year Award in 1992and in 1995 the Edmonton YWCA awarded her the Woman of Distinction in Business, Management and the Professions.

Bob is also Vice President of Allstate Canada Group.

He joined the insurance industry in 1978 but has continued his education – CIP (1982),FCIP (1984); Certificate in Business Administration from Ryerson (1985), CRM (1989) andhis MBA from Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland (2001).

He has been honoured by the insurance industry with the James Richardson Award and theCentennial Award. Bob is currently Vice Chair of the Facility Association; Chair of the

Mark Tonnesen, Vice-Chairman and Chief Financial OfficerRBC Insurance Holdings Inc.

Mark is responsible for financial strategy, business development, marketing, mergers andacquisitions activity and investments management. Prior to this assignment, Mark wasexecutive vice-president of cards and e-business, personal and commercial banking.
