Raiders loosen up offense, tighten up 'D' in win Tue, Nov 28, 2006

ANKENY — The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter boys basketball team got the season started on a winning note as they captured a 46-23 win at Ankeny Christian Monday night.

Down 10-9 early in the first quarter, the Raiders rattled off 10 straight points to end the quarter including five points from Jake Pyle, two each from Danny Samson and Josh Garrison and one from Pat Findlay.

The run continued into the second quarter as the visitors put up the first six points thanks to two Pyle buckets and one Garrison score. The Garrsion two gave CMB a 25-10 advantage over the host Eagles with just over five minutes to play in the second quarter.

With a comfortable lead in their pocket later in the game, the shots started falling more frequently for the Raiders.

The Raiders settled unsuccessfully for outside shots early against a packed-in Ankeny Christian zone but were able to get to the hoop later in the game.

"Not shooting the ball well we tried to get some penetration to either get some easy shots or get to the free throw line," said CMB coach Matt Carter. "The kids did a nice job of adjusting and trying to attack the basket a little more."

Carter also noted the shooting success was a result of moving the ball around on offense.

"We just had to be more patient and in the second half we were," Carter said.

As the CMB offense loosened up the defense tightened up allowing just five total points to the Eagles in the second and third quarter combined.

Pyle led CMB with 13 points and Samson, Findlay and Garrison had eight points each.

Samson came off the bench to lead the Raiders with 12 rebounds.

"He's a strong kid," Carter said of Samson. "He doesn't shy away from physical play and has a nose for the ball."

Garrison had eight rebounds for CMB. The Raiders open Heart of Iowa Conference play with a road girls/boys varsity doubleheader tonight at South Hamilton (Jewell).

Zach Deo led Ankeny Christian with 12 points including two 3-pointers.

Madrid basketball teams win, lose By: 12/04/2006 The Madrid High School basketball teams took the measure of East Greene at Madrid Thursday but then, on Friday, the Tiger girls lost a 52-46 decision to CMB, Collins-Maxwell-Baxter at Baxter while the boys became a 42-41 victim. The Tiger boys posted a 50-48 win and the Tiger girls were victorious, 52-40 in the East Greene games. In that tough Madrid boys loss, 42-41, to CMB, the Tigers were outgoaled, 15-12, but Madrid had five three-point successes to none for CMB. At the free throw line Madrid was 12 of 21 and CMB 10 of 16. CMB took a 6-2 first period lead but it was Madrid 13-12 at the intermission. Madrid then went up, 27-19 after three periods but CMB outscored the Tigers, 23-14 in the final period. Christensen had 15 points for Madrid, Van Dyke added 11, Simmons seven and Matthewson two. Van Dyke hit three three-pointers while made a pair from long range.

MADRID - A determined second-half effort helped the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter boys' basketball team rally past Madrid, 42-41, Friday at Baxter. The Raiders rallied from a 24-14 deficit in the second half to win the game on a putback by Danny Samson with three seconds left to get off to a 1-0 start in the Heart of Iowa Conference and improve to 2-0 overall. Madrid led 41-38 and had T.J. Van Dyke at the foul line shooting two free throws with 45

seconds left. But Van Dyke missed both shots, CMB got the rebound and then Josh Garrison pulled down an offensive board off unsuccessful 3-point shot by teammate Jake Pyle and put the ball in the hoop to pull the Raiders within one. The Raiders called timeout following the basket and then they caught a huge break when the Tiger player inbounding the ball stepped over the line to turn the ball over with 28 seconds left. On its ensuing possession CMB was initially unable to convert the go-ahead shot, but the rebounded bounced off Garrison and landed in Samson's hands. The sophomore then took one dribble and calmly put the ball through the hoop to give CMB the lead. "I just got position and luckily the ball bounced off of Josh and into my hands," Samson said. "Then I just looked real quick, cooled down, made that one dribble and put the ball where it needed to be." Madrid still managed to get a good look in the final seconds as leading scorer Taylor Christenson fired a pull-up jumper from short range as time expired. But the shot fell short and CMB remained undefeated. "It's the first time in three years we've been 2-0," Garrison said. "I feel pretty good right now." Garrison was a dominating force that ignited CMB's comeback in the second half. The Raiders were hurt during the game by a shooting performance that mirrored the freezing temperatures outside. With his team's shots not falling, Garrison took matters into his own hands as he began to dominate on the inside, especially on the offensive glass. "Coach said that someone needs to step up and take control of the game," Garrison said. "That's what I did." Garrison scored 15 of his team-high 17 points in the second half. Four of his eight baskets came off of offensive rebounds. "He's a calm kid, he doesn't get flustered," Carter said. "You know if he gets the ball he's going to know what to do with it." Pyle and Derrick Hansen also came through with some valuable baskets for CMB down the stretch, putting up seven points apiece for the Raiders. Christianson paced Madrid with 18 points. Carter said he was pleased with his team's ability to contain the Tigers' top offensive threat late in the game as the Raiders held him to two points in the final 3 ½ minutes. "We got out of our zone because we didn't want him to get off," Carter said. "We went to a box-and-one and Danny did a nice job making him work." Van Dyke ended up with nine points and Jared Simmons added eight for Madrid in a losing cause. Raiders can't copy first half, fall to conference favorite Norse Mon, Dec 11, 2006

By ANDREW POTTER

NDN Sports Writer

BAXTER — Though it was a 60-35 loss to state-ranked Roland-Story, there were plenty of reasons the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter boys basketball team had to be proud Friday night.

CMB coach Matt Carter said his team's play in the first half could have been the best basketball it has played in his four years as coach in the Heart of Iowa Conference game.

The Raiders seemed confident with the ball and found the bottom of the hoop often as they took a 24-23 lead into halftime.

"That's by far the best we've played this year and probably since I've been here," Carter said. "We came out and were aggressive and took care of the ball."

The Raiders shot 50 percent (11-of-22) from the field in the first half.

The run couldn't keep up for the home team as R-S started pulling away in the third quarter thanks to the play of big man Jack Bruns. The R-S junior scored nine of his game-high 20 points in the third

and R-S headed into the fourth quarter with a 43-33 lead.

"We tried to be aware of Bruns but they are so good from the perimeter too that we didn't want to put so much effort on him," Carter said. "Jack is a special player and they are as deep in talent as any team in the conference."

The visitors kept it up, outscoring the Raiders 17-2 in the fourth quarter for the comfortable win.

Carter said one reason for R-S being able to pull away were the 13 Raider turnovers in the second half.

Josh Garrison and Danny Samson each led the Raiders with eight points each and seven rebounds apiece.

"Night in and night out you know what they are going to get you," Carter said of Garrison and Samson. "They are going to play hard and get to the boards."

Pat Findlay grabbed six rebounds and Samson led CMB with four assists.

Carter hopes his team's play in the first half will give the Raiders (2-2, 1-2 in conference) confidence as the season goes on.

"The thing we talked about is consistency," Carter said. "If we can play that well for four quarters then the wins will start coming against anybody in the conference."

The Raiders are next in action when they host Ogden Tuesday in Maxwell.

Mustangs burn it up in Baxter Mon, Dec 18, 2006

BAXTER — Despite being fresh off a big one-point win over Roland-Story, PCM boys basketball coach Fred Lorensen was looking for his team's shooting to get on track against Collins-Maxwell-Baxter Saturday night on the road. He found it as the Mustangs erupted for 24 points in the first quarter on their way to the 66-37 win over the Raiders in Heart of Iowa Conference play.

"We haven't been shooting the ball very well, so it was nice to see us do that," Lorensen said. "Hopefully that will be a sign of things to come for us."

Gabe Gilson and Bradley Norwood scorched the nets early as each Mustang was 4-of-4 from the field in the first quarter. Three of Gilson's first quarter buckets were 3-pointers.

"They just came out on fire," CMB coach Matt Carter said of the Mustangs. "They've got a lot of great athletes over there and it didn't matter who, they were all knocking down shots."

Three straight points from Norwood gave the Mustangs a 14-2 lead with just over four minutes left in the first quarter. The Mustangs built a 24-6 lead after the first quarter and took a 38-20 lead into halftime.

Zach Myers had seven points in the third quarter for PCM. Danny Jennings hit a fade-away 3-pointer late in the game to send the PCM crowd home with a smile.

Norwood finished with a team-high 14 points and Gilson scored 13 for PCM to lead a balanced offense that also included 11 points from Myers and nine from E.J. Peterson.

"We like it that way," Lorensen said of the offensive balance. "They all need to chip in to do their part."

PCM's Wes VanWyngarden and Cole Van Ryswyk each had five assists and Peterson led the team with seven rebounds.

Lorensen credited the team's passing that spurred the effective offense.

"Our kids are really unselfish they do a good job of looking for each other," he said.

Junior post player Josh Garrison led the Raiders with 17 points.

"Josh has been pretty solid," Carter said of Garrison who had 11 points in the second quarter.

Carter is looking for the same consistency from the rest of the Raiders.

"They are just not sure of themselves and don't have the confidence in themselves," Carter said. "It's a matter of consistency."

Danny Samson and Pat Findlay led CMB with five rebounds each and Samson dished out five assists.

The Mustangs improved to 4-3 overall and in the conference and the Raiders are now 3-4 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

The Mustangs were down by nine with six minutes left against the state-ranked Norsemen Friday night before scoring the last 10 points of the game for the win. Peterson scored the go ahead bucket with 10 seconds left. He led the team with with 11 points and eight rebounds.

"It was a really big win for us," Lorensen said.

Comet boys edge Raiders in defensive battle, 37-31 By Joe Randleman, The Times 12/28/2006

ALLEMAN - A great stretch of defense in the second half lifted the North Polk boys' basketball team to a 37-31 victory over Collins-Maxwell-Baxter at home Dec. 19. Thanks to a tough defensive effort CMB lead most of the first half before a late putback by Paul Brown gave North Polk a 20-19 lead going into the locker room. But the second half saw North Polk take over defensively. The Comets held the Raiders without a point until the final minute of the third quarter to build a 27-21 advantage. "That was the biggest thing," CMB head coach Matt Carter said. "If we could've got a few baskets that third quarter it could've been a different story." Aaron Anderson provided the energetic lift North Polk needed in the third. The senior power forward scored the first two baskets of the quarter to give North Polk a five-point advantage and he was a monster on the boards all game, finishing with 15 rebounds to go along with eight points. "Aaron is a rock for us," North Polk head coach Tron Scott said. "The guy hasn't played basketball in two years and he comes in this year and plays with a steadiness about him that's important for our team to have." Anderson said his strong showing on the glass against CMB was evidence that practice makes perfect. "We work hard in practice on rebounding and defensive drills," Anderson said. "We didn't play our best game tonight, but we're going to continue to work hard to improve in practice." Despite its shaky play on offense CMB did find a way to make a late run at North Polk. Adam Carr scored off a break to give the Comets a 33-23 lead midway through the fourth quarter, but following a timeout Jake Pyle stepped up and drilled two 3-pointers to pull the Raiders within four. "He's been due," Carter said. "He started off the season cold, so it was nice to run a couple of sets and have him knock a couple down."

But CMB was unable to keep the momentum going down the stretch. A pair of Derrick Hansen free throws accounted for the only points the Raiders managed to score in the final two minutes of play as North Polk hit four foul shots down the stretch to hold on. For the game North Polk shot just 36 percent from the field and the Comets were 0 of 7 from 3-point land and just 5 of 12 from the charity stripe as a team. CMB hit only 27 percent of its attempts from the field, including 3 of 12 3-pointers, and the Raiders attempted just seven foul shots, making four. CMB focused much of its defensive attention on Carr, who averaged 20.2 points per game entering the contest. The Comet center ended up with 10 hard-earned points to lead his team in scoring and he also pulled down nine rebounds. Jesse Godfrey chipped in seven points for the Comets while Brown and Eric Hall each scored four. Jon Carsten contributed five rebounds, three assists and two steals for North Polk in the win. Pyle finished with eight points to pace CMB offensively while Hansen and Josh Garrison each scored six points and Eric Moses and Pat Findlay each finished with four. Late lead vanishes for CMB Mon, Jan 8, 2007

By ANDREW POTTER

MAXWELL — The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter boys basketball team couldn't hold on to a late lead and a last-second shot didn't stay down as the Raiders fell, 46-44, to Colo-Nesco at home Friday night in Heart of Iowa Conference play.

CMB went up by four points when two free throws by Pat Findlay gave the hosts a 44-40 lead with 47 seconds left in the game. C-N's Chad Phares next connected on a 3-pointer and also scored a layin seconds later off a Royals steal to give C-N a 45-44 lead with 14.1 seconds left.

The Raiders turned the ball over yet again with under 10 seconds to go, and the Royals' Dane Kaufman hit 1-of-2 free throws with 3.9 seconds left for the 46-44 C-N lead. CMB senior Eric Moses then saw his halfcourt shot attempt at the buzzer rim in and out as the Raiders lost a heartbreaker.

CMB coach Matt Carter said his team hasn't had much experience holding on to close leads late in the game.

"We panicked and the last few years we haven't been in a lot of games and hopefully this experience will help us next time it happens," Carter said.

Tied 8-8 near the end of the first quarter, the Raiders got a bucket each from Pat Findlay and Sean Wheat — each assisted by Danny Samson — to build a 12-8 lead after one quarter. The Raiders didn't let up into the second quarter as they scored the first three points of the frame via a Derrick Hansen free throw and a Moses fast break layin.

The Moses basket gave the Raiders a 15-8 lead with 6:15 left in the second quarter. The Royals then came alive going on a 14-2 run to close the quarter and head into halftime with a 22-17 lead.

A physical second half led to three technicals being called on the Royals and plenty of opportunities at the free throw line for the Raiders. But the Raiders were 13-of-24 at the free throw line in the second half as it proved to be a back-and-forth game for the final two quarters.

"Those missed free throws can come back and bite you," Carter said.

A basket inside by Hansen gave the Raiders a 40-38 lead with 2:20 left to play in the fourth quarter. Hansen later hit two free throws to extend the CMB lead to 42-38. Kaufman then hit a basket setting up the two free throws by Findlay and the late run by the Royals for the win.

"We just weren't mentally tough enough and that cost us down the stretch," Carter said.

Josh Garrison and Hansen each had 12 points to lead the Raiders and Garrison led the team with seven rebounds. Samson led the Raiders with four assists and Moses had four steals.

Chandler Eley led the Royals with 14 points before fouling out with just under two minutes left in the game.

The Raiders fall to 3-6 overall and 2-6 in the conference while the Royals are now 5-4 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

Collins-Maxwell-Baxter’s Derrick Hansen squeezes through two Woodward-Granger defenders while looking for an open teammate during the Raiders’ 50-47 victory over the Hawks Friday at Maxwell.

MAXWELL The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter boys basketball team wasn’t about to let another Heart of Iowa Conference game slip through its fingers Friday night in Maxwell. The Raiders had blown a

late lead in dropping a 46-44 decision to Colo-Nesco at Maxwell on Jan. 5, but on Friday they came through with enough timely defensive stands against Woodward-Granger to fend off the Hawks in a tense 50-47 affair. The game was a classic battle that saw junior center Josh Garrison control the low post for CMB and senior guard Ben Heasley carry Woodward-Granger with his deadly shooting stroke. In the end it was the more efficient inside game of the Raiders that prevailed. CMB had built a 48-42 lead heading into the final minute of the fourth quarter thanks in large part to the outstanding play of Garrison. The Raiders had trailed 38-36 entering the fourth quarter, but Garrison scored eight points as part of a 12-4 CMB run to give his team the edge going into the final minute of regulation. Right there in the fourth we decided it was time to go to him, CMB head coach Matt Carter said. Its been awhile since he’s had a hot night and we thought the match up was good so we ran some sets to get the ball into his hands and he did a nice job of finishing. But things nearly slipped away from CMB in the last 60 seconds. Heasley, who finished with 24 points on the night, canned his third 3-pointer of the second half to pull Woodward-Granger within 48-45 in the final minute and then the Hawks got a steal off the ensuing Raider inbounds play. Nick Geneser scored off the turnover to cut the Raider lead to 48-47 and then CMB turned the ball over again with just 36 seconds left to give Woodward-Granger a chance to play for the winning basket. It was too much of a flashback to last week, Carter said. We were in the exact same position in the Colo game up four with 45 seconds (left) and then they hit a couple big shots and we just gave it away. The Raider immediately responded to the adversity on defense, forcing a turnover with 25 seconds left. However, they gave the ball right back to the Hawks after illegally running the baseline on the ensuing inbounds play. The CMB defense stood tall again, however, forcing the Hawks into two missed shots before regaining possession with 11 seconds remaining. Garrison then came through with another huge basket for the Raiders as he got the ball down low and put it in the hole with just three ticks left on the clock. Heasley attempted to tie the game with a desperation 3-pointer from 35 feet out, but it was off the mark and CMB survived to earn its fourth win of the season, the most victories the program has achieved in three years. It was good to see the kids react differently or not remember the Colo game, Carter said. They kept their heads up and finished off the game; I’m proud of them. Defensively CMB managed to hold Heasley to three points in the fourth quarter. The star Hawk had put up over 40 points in a game on more than one occasion thus far on the season and Carter wanted to make sure the Raiders did everything within their power stop Heasley from beating them. We knew we were going to come out in a box-and-one, but we also worked on trapping him with two guys and taking our chances with their other guys, Carter said. He’s just too good that if he gets on a roll he’s going to take you right out of the game. We did everything we could to make him work hard to get his shots, Carter added. There at the end we just put two guys on him and said if were going to lose this game somebody else is going to have to hit a game-winning shot because its not going to be him. Garrison provided the answer to Heasley for CMB on the offensive end. He ended up making 13 field goals and totaling a game-high 26 points while also pulling down 12 rebounds on the night. I was hoping for another double-double, Garrison said. I just had to work hard and they got me the ball. Jake Pyle added 10 points and Eric Moses chipped in six for the Raiders. The win put CMB at 4-7 on the season and 3-7 against conference competition.

Ogden's fourth quarter rally sinks Raiders Mon, Jan 22, 2007

By ANDREW POTTER

NDN Sports Writer

OGDEN — Host Ogden outscored Collins-Maxwell-Baxter 15-6 in the fourth quarter to pull out a 51-38 Heart of Iowa Conference win in boys basketball action Friday night.

Ogden was led by 6-foot-6 senior forward James Chapline, who scored 12 of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter.

"He did a good job of being patient (Friday night), and he is a dangerous offensive player and very active," CMB coach Matt Carter said of Chapline.

The Raiders got a boost off the bench early from Jake Pyle. The senior came into that game and sank his first four shots and had six points in the first quarter.

"Jake did a nice job of knocking down some shots in the first half," Carter said.

Ogden took a 13-10 lead into the second quarter. CMB tied up the game at 13-13 when Pyle's fourth straight shot went through the net with 5:20 to play in the second quarter.

CMB stayed close but the Bulldogs took some momentum into halftime when Chapline hit two shots within the final 25 seconds of the second quarter for a 25-20 Ogden lead heading to the break.

CMB closed the Ogden lead to one point in the third quarter when Josh Garrison hit two free throws after being fouled after getting an offensive rebound. The Garrison free throws cut the Ogden lead to 29-28 with 3:20 left in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs would go on a 16-6 run from there to extend to a 45-34 lead midway through the fourth quarter and hold on for the win.

"The kids were getting upset with themselves and a little bit with things going on on the floor, and they let their emotions make them do things they didn't normally do and didn't do in the first three quarters," Carter said.

Pyle and Pat Findlay scored eight points each to lead the Raiders while Findlay led the team with nine rebounds. Derrick Hansen and Eric Moses had three assists each while Moses and Garrison each swiped three steals.

Garrison, the leading scorer for the Raiders, didn't get a shot attempt in the game until the third quarter.

"We ran a lot of sets trying to get him the ball. They did a nice job of sagging down on him," Carter said.

CMB falls to 4-8 on the season and 3-7 in conference action and Ogden improved to 5-9 overall and 4-8 in the conference.

BAXTER - The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter boys' basketball team struggled to keep pace with the quickness and outside shooting of Bondurant-Farrar Friday at Baxter as the Raiders dropped a 67-36 decision to the Bluejays. Bondurant-Farrar made six 3-pointers for the game and the Bluejays received many easy scoring opportunities during a game they controlled from start to finish. The Bluejays raced out to a 21-5 lead by the early part of the second quarter and by the half their lead was 24 points. CMB head coach Matt Carter said Bondurant-Farrar's zone defense gave his team fits all game. "Their match-up zone is tough and when you lack the perimeter shooting like we do it makes it tougher," Carter said. He also said the Bluejays' quickness bothered his team throughout the contest. "The one thing we wanted was to stop dribble penetration," Carter said. "Sometimes we helped too much and they kicked it out for 3-pointers and you can't help it when they don't miss." But the lopsided final didn't prevent Carter from finding positive results out of his team's effort against the traditional Heart of Iowa Conference power. "I don't think we came out and played that bad," Carter said. "The kids weren't afraid when we started." Josh Garrison had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for CMB despite being the focal point of the Bluejay defense. Sean Wheat also scored 10 points for the Raiders in the loss while Grant Pinkley netted a game-high 22 points to lead Bondurant-Farrar. With the loss CMB fell to 3-11 in the conference and 4-11 overall.

Mustangs sock it to CMB Wed, Feb 7, 2007

MONROE — PCM picked up the tempo against Collins-Maxwell-Baxter to power to a win Tuesday night. The Mustangs got going so fast that one player, Cole Van Ryswyk, lost his shoe on the offensive end in the first half and had to play a possession on defense with the shoe off of his left foot.

Shoes on or shoes off, the Mustangs topped the Raiders, 59-23, in the Heart of Iowa Conference contest at Monroe.

PCM held a 7-5 lead after one quarter but the Raiders were able to tie it up at 7-7 early on in the second quarter with two free throws from Derrick Hansen.

The Mustangs then went on an 11-0 run in the second quarter which included four points each from Bradley Norwood and Joel McCalester to take an 18-7 lead.

"We switched and tried to trap a little bit and got some offense out of our defense to get us going," said PCM coach Fred Lorensen. "After that, we loosened up and made some shots."

After one Jake Pyle free throw for CMB made the score, 18-8, the Mustangs went on another run late in the second quarter.

PCM scored nine straight points including four from Van Ryswyk, a 3-pointer from Gavin Burns and a basket by E.J. Peterson.

The Mustangs took a 27-9 lead into the halftime break.

Norwood scored six points and teammate Chad Harper also scored six in the third quarter which saw the hosts outscore the Raiders, 18-3.

CMB coach Matt Carter said his team's offensive woes resulted from being too tentative with the ball.

"The kids were afraid to shoot the ball from the outside and you have to shoot the ball from the outside to open up the inside," Carter said. "If you pass up open shots, at some point you are going to turn it over or force up bad shots, which is what we were doing in the second and third quarters."

PCM closed out the game with a 14-11 advantage in the fourth quarter for the win.

"We made it tough on them to get many good looks," Lorensen said of his defense. "We did a nice job of having intensity and making it tough on them."

Norwood and Van Ryswyk led PCM with 14 points each as both found success taking the ball to the basket.

'They were aggressive and it was nice to see them do that," Lorensen said.

McCalester stepped in with six points and five boards as he saw more floor time with a couple of Mustangs out sick.

CMB did its part on defense as well, limiting the Comets to 40-percent shooting, including 0 of 4 from 3-point land, and forcing 19 turnovers, but in the end the Raiders couldn't shake their offensive woes in falling to 3-13 in the conference and 4-13 overall. BAXTER — A junior and a sophomore helped send the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter seniors on the boys basketball team out with an emotional 49-46 Heart of Iowa Conference win on senior night Friday at home.

The CMB Raiders outscored the Colfax-Mingo Tigerhawks 14-7 in the fourth quarter for the win.

Junior Josh Garrison led the Raiders with 19 points and sophomore Danny Samson got a key steal late and hit two free throws with 3.1 seconds left.

"The kids came out with a purpose and from the tip to the last shot they played really well," said CMB coach Matt Carter.

The Raiders opened up with Garrison scoring nine points in the first quarter as the hosts took a 14-9 lead after one period of play.

"He was just finding his way to the ball," Carter said of Garrison.

The Tigerhawks laid claim to the second quarter, outscoring the Raiders 14-5 thanks to eight of Jason Lowry's game-high 24 points in the frame.

The Tigerhawks took a 23-19 lead into halftime and kept a four-point lead after the third quarter at 39-35.

The fourth quarter opened with two straight baskets by Samson, the last off an offensive rebound to tie the game at 39-39 with 6:45 left in the quarter. It was back-and-forth for the next few minutes until CMB scored four straight points via two Garrison free throws and one Jake Pyle jump shot in the lane midway through the quarter gave CMB a 44-41 lead. Later with CMB up 46-45 Derrick Hansen hit 1-of-2 free throws for the Raiders before Lowry did the same to make the CMB lead 47-46. C-M's chances down the stretch didn't pan out and a Samson steal and his two free throws with 3.1 seconds left would seal the win for CMB.

"I just relaxed and put them through," Samson said of his free throws. "We really wanted to win it for the seniors."

C-M coach John Borts thought his team lacked the focus they've had in previous games this season.

"I don't think our kids approached the game the same way we have some of the others," Borts said. "I don't think we worked as a team at all. You've got to credit CMB. They hung around and knocked down shots at the right time."

CMB improves to 5-14 overall and 4-14 in conference play and C-M drops to 8-11 overall and 7-11 in the conference.

Dunk gets Trojans on course, past CMB Raiders Tue, Feb 20, 2007

By ANDREW POTTER

NDN Sports Writer

BAXTER — An alley oop dunk brought life to the West Marshall boys basketball team right when it needed it.

The Trojans, down, 28-23, to Collins-Maxwell-Baxter in Class 2A district quarterfinal game, got a dunk from Tyler Shipley on a lob pass from Tyler Rabey, which helped ignite a 20-4 run the rest of the third quarter.

The Trojans advanced with a 55-41 win over the Raiders to take on North Polk in Thursday's district semifinal at 7 p.m. in Baxter.

"We kind of needed a little boost and that kind of gave it to us," West Marshall coach David Shipley said of the dunk.

After coming out of halftime tied at 23-23, the Raiders scored the first five points of the third quarter on a 3-pointer from Sean Wheat and a 2-point basket from Josh Garrison.

That's when Coach Shipley called for the alley oop, which energized the Trojans, who outscored CMB 20-9 in the third quarter.

While the Trojans were heating up, the Raiders' offense cooled off in the second half.

"We were taking the same shots (as the first half) and we couldn't get them to fall," said CMB coach Matt Carter. "In the second half, we let their defense dictate where we were going with the ball."

Rabey caught fire near the end of the third quarter for the Trojans, hitting a fade-away baseline shot with 20 seconds to go in the third and then nailing a 3-pointer at the third quarter buzzer.

"There's not much you can do about that," Carter said of Rabey. "He knocked down some tough shots."

Rabey had seven of his game-high 17 points in the third quarter.

West Marshall took a 43-32 lead into the fourth quarter and the Raiders couldn't get back within striking distance after that.

The Raiders had a strong start to the game, building a 10-4 lead with 4:20 left to go in the first quarter when Danny Samson hit a driving shot off a pass from teammate Eric Moses.

West Marshall cut the Raider lead to 12-10 heading into the second quarter. West Marshall built a 21-16 lead midway through the second quarter before five straight Raiders points — one from Derrick Hansen, two from Garrison and two from Jake Pyle — tied the game at 21-21.

The two teams traded baskets within the final two minutes of the first half for the 23-23 score at the break.

Josh Garrison led CMB with 10 points and Hansen and Pyle each scored eight. Samson led the Raiders with five rebounds and six assists.

Garrison grabbed four rebounds and Pyle and Wheat each had three boards.

The Raiders end the season with a 5-17 record, but Carter noted the most important step was being competitive in more games this year.

"We won five this year but more importantly we were in more games," Carter said. "Things are getting better and now the younger kids have to take what the seniors have built and improve on that in the offseason."

Coach Shipley said a key to his team's second half success was the defense that stepped up off the bench.

"Some of those kids that come off the bench are pretty good defenders," he said. "I credit some of our younger kids for stepping up and doing the job defensively."

Joe Disney contributed 10 points for West Marshall, which improved to 16-6 on the season.

In the night's opener in Baxter, the Comets used key offensive rebounds down the stretch to advance to take on the Trojans Thursday night. Adam Carr led North Polk (11-10) with 14 points.

BAXTER - It was a tale of two halves for the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter boys' basketball team against West Marshall in Class 2A district quarterfinal competition Monday in Baxter. The shots were falling for the Raiders in the first half as they hung right with the Trojans, but CMB went ice cold over the final two quarters in dropping a 55-41 decision. "We just couldn't get shots to drop," CMB head coach Matt Carter said. "We got some good looks, we just couldn't knock them down." The game was tied at 23-23 through the first half. CMB was playing well on both ends of the court and it kept up the strong play to start the third quarter. Sean Wheat drilled a 3-pointer from the corner and Josh Garrison canned a 15-foot jumper to give the Raiders a 28-23 and force West Marshall coach David Shipley to call timeout. But the Trojans came out of the break fired up and an allyoop dunk from Tyler Rabey to Tyler Shipley started a 20-4 Trojan run. "They just picked up the pressure," Carter said. "Their intensity may not have been where coach Shipley wanted it and when they came out of that timeout they definitely came out more fired up." Jake Pyle hit a jumper and Garrison converted a floater to cut an 11-point Trojan lead to 43-36 early in the fourth quarter. But that's the closest the Raiders would get the rest of the way as they ended the season with a 5-17 record while West Marshall improved to 16-6. Even though his team came up short, Carter said he was happy with the effort the Raiders gave in defeat. He also said he was proud of the progress the team had shown throughout the season. "I told the seniors they didn't win any games as a freshman," Carter said. "We've gotten better each year." Garrison had 10 points and Derrick Hansen also tallied 10 in his final game for CMB. Jake Pyle chipped in eight points and Wheat added seven in his last game for the Raiders while fellow senior Eric Moses chipped in four. Rabey paced West Marshall with 19 points.
