Leathernecks Continue Four-Game HomestandWestern Illinois hosts Morehead State in game three of a four-game homestand, Saturday at 7 p.m. in Western Hall.

Last Time OutSammy Hunter scored 12 first-half points en route to a career-high 21, as the Western Illinois men’s basketball team fell 77-75 to Utah Valley State, Saturday night.

David Jackson missed a 3-pointer with four sec-onds left that would’ve tied the game at 77, but his shot went wide. After Morris Smith rebounded the miss and hit one of two free throws with 0.3 seconds left, the Wolverines (4-1) escaped Macomb with the two-point victory.

Jackson scored 19 total points and added five rebounds, while freshman Mahamoud Diakite saw his first significant action of the year, tallying 11 points and six rebounds in 26 minutes.

Morehead State’s Last GameMarshall shot a red-hot 58.7 percent from the field, won the rebound battle and held off a determined Morehead State rally in the final moments to post an 81-80 win Wednesday (Nov. 29) evening in Johnson Arena.

Morehead State freshman Maze Stallworth came off the bench to score a career-high 21 points, hitting five of eight three-pointers, and pull down a team-high seven rebounds. Quentin Pryor, the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week, scored 18 points. Brandon Callahan added 17 points, including a shot from beyond mid-court at the final buzzer. Cordaryl Ballard had 11 points.

Marshall had 32 rebounds to 28 for Morehead State. Herd center Jean Francois Bro Grebe led all rebounders with nine. He also blocked three shots.

Marshall led by 10 points, 40-30, at halftime, and spread the lead out to as many as 18 points on two occasions after intermission. The Eagles battled back to within one point on three occasions, including the final margin, but could never take a second-half lead.

Last Time Versus Morehead StateGreg Akers scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds, leading Western Illinois to an 86-79 victory over Morehead State, Dec. 4, 1986.

Akers was helped by Jeff Klinler’s 19 and Eric Chin’s 10 points. Chin also contribued five assists. As a team, the Leathernecks shot 53.2 percent for the game, while holding the Eagles to 35.4 percent shooting from the field.

The win was the third of five straight that opened the 1986-87 season. The 5-0 start was the best since 1957-58, when Western won its first 27 games, and won the IIAC Championship under Leroy “Stix” Morley. The Leathernecks finished 1986-87 season with a 12-16 record.

2006-07 Stats Comparison

Game NotesCloser than CloseThe Leathernecks have lost their last three games by a total of six points. They are the only team in the country to have lost three or more games by less than 10 total points.

More on Tight ContestsWestern has played five games to a 2-3 record this season. The contests have been decided by a total of 17 points, while the last four games have been decided by nine total points. Within the close games have been two overtime match-ups: a 75-72 win over Radford and a five-overtime 97-95 loss to IPFW. Western hasn’t played three overtime games in a season since 2000-01.

Jackson Fitting in with the EliteDavid Jackson was voted to the preseason Mid-Con First-Team, and has shown why in the early season. Through four games, Jackson ranks second the conference in scoring with 20.2 ppg, and is seventh in the conference in rebounding with 6.2 per contest. Defending Mid-Con Player of the Year Caleb Greene is the only other player to rank in the top-seven in both categories.

Sharing the LoadThree different players have led the Leathernecks in scoring through five games. Sammy Hunter has led the team twice, including tying his career-high with 21 against Utah Valley State. David Jackson has topped the Leatherneck scoring column three times, most notably with a career-high 32 against IPFW. Jackson shared the distinction with Louis Johnson, when each scored 17 against Radford.

New SensationsNewcomers to Western Illinois have played 47.3 percent of the team’s minutes, making significant contributions along the way. Junior college transfer Jerryck Owens-Murrey is leading the charge, averaging 10.2 ppg, the third-best average on the team, and 5.2 rpg, good for second with the squad. Owens-Murrey is also playing in an efficient style, converting 55.6 percent of his field goal attempts, a percentage that leads the Leathernecks and ranks eighth in the Mid-Con.

Freshman point guard James Washington is also contributing to the team in a big way. Washington has averaged 32 minutes per game, and is seventh in the conference with 3.40 assists per contest. The freshman has also tabbed a 1.89 assists/turnover ratio, the second-best in the Mid-Con.

Down the Home StretchWestern Illinois’ run of four consecutive home games started with Tuesday’s match-up with IPFW. The Leathernecks will again play four-straight home games from Jan. 11-20. Last time Western played four straight home games was from Nov. 30 to Dec. 8, 2004, when Thomas’ team went 3-1 with wins over Utah Valley State, Harris-Stowe, and Loyola (Ill.).

Western Illinois will play six straight road games from Dec. 22 to Jan. 9. The run is the most consecutive games away from Macomb since the opening of the 2002-03 season, when Jim Kerwin’s team played its first seven games on the road, compiling a 1-6 record along the way.

This week in the Mid-Con...Season NotesChampionship ReturnWestern Illinois advanced to the finals of the Florida International Tournament Invitational by defeating Radford, 75-72, in overtime. It’s the first time the Leathernecks have played in a tournament championship since the 1998-99 season.

Leathernecks Tabbed SixthWestern Illinois was picked to finish sixth in the Mid-Con by the conference’s coaches, sports information directors and selected media members. Voters chose Oral Roberts to finish first in the league, followed by IUPUI, UMKC, Valparaiso and Oakland at fifth. Southern Utah and Centenary filled in the seventh and eighth spots, respectively.

Thomas to Help Select Tourney TeamsHead coach Derek Thomas will serve as the Mid-Continent Conference’s delegate to the Midwest Regional Advising Committee of the 2007 Division I Men’s Basketball Championships.

As a member of the committee, Thomas will vote for the top-15 teams in the midwest region on three occasions during the season. His votes, along with the votes of the 30 other committee members, will be one factor in the head Division I Men’s Basket-ball Committee’s decision of what team’s receive at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament.

Five-OT Loss Yields RecordsWestern’s 97-95 five-overtimes loss to IPFW was the longest game in division-I history, and the extra minutes allowed several players to rack-up career-highs, and school records. David Jackson’s 58 minutes are the most in program history, while his 32 points tied his career-high, and made him the sixth Leatherneck to score 30 twice in a career. He also had career-highs of 12 rebounds, 11 field goals made, and 10 free throws made. Freshman Morris Smith tabbed the most career-highs on the night, with nine.

Still Coaching prosLeatherneck head coach Derek Thomas has continued to coach professional basketball players, five years removed from his job as a player personnel scout.

Three Western Illinois basketball players have signed professional contracts after time under Thomas. The first was Eulis Baez, who signed with Club Basket Vic in Spain after the 2004-05 season. Since the 2005-06 season Eliz Cepeda has signed with a professional club in Puerto Rico, while Eze Samuel is on the roster of American Basketball Association’s Buffalo Silverbacks.

30-point ClubDavid Jackson’s 32-point effort against IPFW, Nov. 21, made him the sixth player in Western Illinois’ division-I history to score more than 30 points twice in his career.

Jackson became the 18th player in Western’s division-I era history to score more than 30 points in a game, and the second player to do so since 2002, when he poured-in 32, Nov. 29, 2005 against Eastern Illinois.

Three Sign-on as LeathernecksDerek Thomas has added three players to his 2007-08 roster on National Letter of Intent Day: Josh Harrellson, a 6-foot-9, 250-pound center, Larry Dumas, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound wing, and Ceola Clark, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound point guard.

Harrellson averaged 18.1 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.4 blocks per game in high school, while Dumas and Clark were tabbed as two of Illinois’ top-30 recruits by chicagohoops.com.

“The best we’ve had”Derek Thomas’ third recruiting class was ranked just that, third in the Mid-Con by recruiting service HoopScoop.com. His first two recruiting classes were placed at the top of the conference, but Thomas is far from discouraged by the low ranking.

“I think this class is the best we’ve had,” he said of his six newcomers. “This last year and a half, we’ve got guys who have a good mixture of all the qualities we’re looking for.”
