WThe ScheduleWestern’s 2010 schedule gets off to a quick start as the team will have just one exhibition match at Northern Illinois on Aug. 20 before kicking off the regular season with it’s first ever matchup against future Summit League foe South Dakota in Macomb on Aug. 22.

A trip to the Austin Peay Invitational in Clarksville, Tenn. awaits the Leathernecks on the second weekend of the season. Western will face tournament host Austin Peay on Aug. 27 for the first time in its history before squaring off with Miami University on Aug. 29.

Western will hit the road twice more, taking on Grand View on Sept. 3. before a second matchup with South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D. on Sept. 6.

The team will return home for a match against SIU-Edwardsville on Sept. 10 before traveling to Davenport, Iowa to take on St. Ambrose on Sept. 12.

The Leathernecks will play their next two matches at home, taking on Green Bay on Sept. 16 before squaring off against in-state rival Eastern Illinois on Sept. 19.

The team’s non-conference schedule concludes with a trip to Northern Iowa on Sept. 29 before Summit League play begins on Oct. 1 with a match against UMKC. The remainder of the schedule takes place against Summit League foes and includes three home matches and five away.

The Summit League Tournament takes place in Brookings, S.D. on Nov. 5 and 7. The top four teams in the final regular-season standings will qualify for the league tournament.

The TeamThe Leathernecks return nine of 11 starters from last year’s squad, including All-Conference selections Jenny Green, Laura Atkinson and Kellie Julius.

Green was a First Team All-Summit League selection and led all Leatherneck defenders with three goals last year. Atkinson was a Second Team All-League selection after leading the league and finishing 23rd in the nation with a .859 save percentage. Julius was the team’s leading scorer, netting 11 points on four goals and three assists while earning All-Newcomer honors.

Western also returns its leading goal scorer in Ali Smyth, who tallied five goals and led the team with 42 shots in 2009. Nora Potempa and Jill Kevorkian both return after scoring three goals each last year while Abby Davis and Katie Condon return after scoring two apiece.

The Leathernecks will also welcome back two upperclassmen in Lauren DeWolf and Jessica Walsh. Both players missed the 2009 season with injuries but are at full strength after making offseason recoveries.

Western will be led by captains Green, DeWolf and Caitlin Barrett. Barrett appeared in 17 of the team’s 18 matches last season, scoring one goal and picking up one assist.

A total of eight incoming freshman will bolster the roster. The 2010 class consists of players from Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota.

Overall, the Leatherneck roster consists of six seniors, four juniors, eight sophomores, one redshirt-freshman and eight true freshmen.

As The Summit League concludes its third decade as an NCAA Division I athletics conference, the ascending level of performance among the 10 member institutions and over 3,000 student-athletes in 19 championship sports continues.

Now in its 29th year, The Summit League is in the midst of a renaissance, both on the playing field and in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, the League produced a national champion, 11 All-Americans, eight Academic All-Americans and 33 Academic All-District honorees.

During the 2009 campaign, IUPUI set a new league record with 17 wins on the season and five of the league’s 10 teams finished .500 or better. The league saw four of its teams finish with 10 or more wins for just the second time in league history

Academically, six Summit League teams were bestowed with the NCAA Public Recognition Award, an honor given to teams that have a Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. IPFW led with three teams on the list, including men’s cross country, women’s golf and volleyball, while another trio of teams, UMKC volleyball, North Dakota State women’s golf and Oakland women’s golf, also received accolades.

Originally formed in 1982 as the Association of Mid-Continent Universities and later known as the Mid-Continent Conference, The Summit League is in its fourth year of a rebranding that followed its 25th anniversary and coincided with the Summit Plan, a strategic plan that places a renewed emphasis on improving the academic and athletic performances of all league student-athletes.

Included in the plan was the league’s new name, the creation of a new image and the addition of three member institutions.

The Summit League has a combined enrollment of over 125,000 at 10 member institutions: Centenary College of Louisiana, IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne), IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis), UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City), North Dakota State University, Oakland University, Oral Roberts University, South Dakota State University, Southern Utah University and Western Illinois University.

In April 2009, the University of South Dakota accepted an invitation to join the league with full membership beginning in 2011-12 and currently serves as an

associate member for swimming and diving. The League has one additional associate member in Eastern Illinois University, which currently competes in swimming and diving and will join in men’s soccer in 2011.

These member institutions pride themselves on providing quality athletic, academic and social experiences for their

student-athletes.

The Summit League sponsors 19 championship sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. The league champion receives automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament in all applicable sports.

2009 Season Recap

After missing The Summit League Tournament in 2008, the 2009 Western Illinois women’s soccer team made a late season charge that sent them back to the postseason for the fourth time in five years.

The Fighting Leathernecks began the season with a 3-0 loss at Butler on Aug. 30 before picking up their first win against Southern Indiana the following week.

After a picking up a tie against Northern Iowa on Sept. 11, the Leathernecks dropped two straight matches to Iowa State and Drake before raking a 3-0 victory from St. Ambrose on Sept. 20.

Another setback came just four days later as Western fell to Eastern Illinois by a 1-0 score in overtime. A 7-0 win over Grand View on Sept. 26 gave Western a 3-4-1 record heading into Summit League play.

After a 2-0 home loss to IUPUI to open conference play, the Leathernecks got a goal from Jenny Green in the 80th minute to notch a tie on the road against Southern Utah on Oct. 8.

The positive momentum continued for Western as it defeated conference foe UMKC, 2-1, in overtime on Oct. 10 for its first league win of the season.

The Leathernecks would hit another bump in the road the following week with two straight conference losses at home. The Leathernecks fell to South Dakota State, 2-1, on Oct. 16 before dropping a 2-1 decision to North Dakota State just two days later.

The team finished with a flurry, picking up consecutive double-overtime wins at Centenary (10/23) and Oral Roberts (10/25) to improve to 6-7-2 overall and 3-3-1 in The Summit League.

Despite winning two straight road matches, the team’s work wasn’t done yet as a 3-2 home win over IPFW on Oct. 30 set the stage for a dramatic season-finale against Oakland on Nov. 1.

With a spot in The Summit League Tournament on the line for both teams, the Leathernecks struck first, taking a 1-0 lead on Ali Smyth’s penalty kick in the 59th minute.

The Golden Grizzlies would tie the match at 1-1 on Sarah Lynch’s penalty kick in the 84th minute and take momentum back in the closing minutes of regulation but Western’s season was extended by a pair of freshmen when Kellie Julius found Katie Condon with for the game-winner in the 85th minute.

The Leathernecks finished the regular season with an 8-7-2 overall record and a 5-3-1 mark in conference play, good for a fourth place finish in the final league standings.

Western’s fourth-place finish set up a showdown against top-seeded and defending league champion South Dakota State in the first round of The Summit League Tournament on Nov. 6.

The Leathernecks hung with the Jackrabbits and took the defending champs into overtime despite a 23-8 deficit in shots during regulation.

Neither team could capitalize on a scoring opportunity in the first overtime period and the match moved to a second overtime.

With just under three minutes remaining in the period, South Dakota State’s Kaitlin Justice fired a shot past Leatherneck goalie Laura Atkinson, avoiding a shootout and ending Western’s season in dramatic fashion.

Despite the loss, the 2009 Leathernecks finished the season with the second-best single season conference record in school history and the third largest win total in the program’s 13-year existence.

Awards and Recognition

In addition to the team’s accomplishments on the pitch, several individual players excelled on the field as well as in the classroom.

The Leathernecks had two players, Amanda Wright and Jenny Green, selected to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.

Green was also named as a First Team All-Summit League selection and was named to the league’s All-Tournament team. The Palatine, Ill., native led all Leatherneck defenders with three goals on the season and was one of three players to start all 18 matches.

Western had a total of four players receive All-League honors in addition to Green. Keeley Murray was named as an aAl-Summit League second team selection after recording two assists on the season. Murray ended her career as the school’s all-time leader in minutes played (5,712) while fourth in career assists (14).

Freshman goalkeeper Laura Atkinson was also named to the All-Summit League second team and the league’s All-Newcomer Team after compiling a 5-4-1 record along with a 1.18 goals against average. The Oregon, Wis., native finished the year ranked 23rd in the nation in save percentage (.859) and was named as The Summit League’s Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 26. Atkinson was also named to the league’s all-tournament team.

Joining Atkinson on the All-Newcomer Team was fellow freshman Kellie Julius, who led the team with 11 points on four goals and three assists on the season.

The Leathernecks were led in goals and assists by two players from overseas. Northern Ireland natives Ali Smyth and Demi Vance finished as the team leaders in goals and assists, respectively.

Smyth finished the year with five goals on the season, including the game-winner in double-overtime against Oral Roberts. Vance ended the season with four assists and one goal on the season for a total of five points.

As a team, the 2009 Leathernecks finished the season ranked fifth in school history for points (73), goals (27) and assists (19) in a season. Western’s goalkeeping duo of Atkinson and Megahn Tyk combined for a 1.15 goals against average, the second best season mark in the team’s history.

W2009 Season Recap

Dr. Al Goldfarb President

Board of Trustees

Since Al Goldfarb, Western Illinois University’s 10th president, officially took office July 1, 2002, the University has outlined goals and values within the framework of a strategic plan, expanded the University’s operations in the Quad Cities through a gift from Deere and Company of facilities and land which will become a riverfront campus, which is scheduled to open in Spring 2012, and designated the southwest section of the Macomb campus as a fine arts quadrant and location for a new Performing Arts Center.

Under his leadership the University has expanded its Cost Guarantee program to include graduate degree students, making Western the only public university in the state which guarantees tuition, fees, and room and board at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Goldfarb oversees the University’s current comprehensive campaign, “Set the Standard: Higher Values in Higher Education,” which to date, has raised just over $30 million of the campaign’s $60 million goal. University fundraising efforts resulted in $8.2 million in Fiscal Year 2009, the highest annual total on record.

Dr. Tim M. Van Alstine Director of Athletics

The competitive nature and success of most athletics programs is measured and evaluated on a daily basis, primarily on the scoreboards, newscasts, and newspapers. Often times the basis of a sport program’s competitiveness and ultimate success extends behind the headlines deep into the support offered by its administration.

In nine years at Western Illinois, Dr. Tim M. Van Alstine has instilled a commitment to developing a broad-based gender-

neutral, yet competitive NCAA Division I athletics program.

Western has won 23 conference championships under Van Alstine, winning three Mid-Continent Conference Commissioner’s Cups, 2003, 2004, 2005 and finishing second the following three years.

Twenty Western Illinois teams have advanced to NCAA postseason competition and 58 student-athletes have competed as individuals representing Western at the NCAA’s. Further, since 2001, Western coaches have earned 26 “Coach of the Year” accolades.

Football attendance during the 2003 season reached a total of 77,426 - the highest attendance figure in school history - and an average of 12,904 fans per game - the second highest mark in the program’s 108 years. Each of the average football attendances during Van Alstine’s first three years rank among the top 15 marks.

Van Alstine has increased the academic expectations as well. For the first time in program history, Western Illinois student athletes exceeded the 3.0 grade point average in consecutive semesters (spring 2009 and fall 2009) with a then-all-time high 3.15 GPA after the 2009 fall semester. In spring 2010 athletics had its third-straight semester with at least a 3.0 GPA as the student-athletes achieved an unprecedented 3.19 GPA. Student-athletes have had a steady 76 percent graduation success rate (1999-2002 cohort).

ILITIES

The national and regional yardstick by which a program’s support base is measured is in its facilities. The coaches and staff at Western Illinois are vigilant in monitoring the successes, failures, resources, and facilities of their peers and rival institutions. These comparisons are provident because in intercollegiate athletics, just as with other components of the University, most often there is a direct relationship between the facilities and resources and the competitive success of the program.

• Colonel Rock III made his Leatherneck debut on May 15, 2010, ending a 37-year hiatus of a live bulldog mascot at Western Illinois. The English bulldog is the traditional mascot of the U.S. Marine Corps.• A costumed version of Rocky was developed in 1973. He has received three “groomings” since his first appearance, the most recent on Feb. 15, 1997. Rocky was immortalized in the form of a 900-pound cement statue in

1971, which now sits at the entrance of Hanson Field.

• In July 1977 a county-wide nickname contest was held to establish an identity for Western’s female student-athletes. From more than 100 entries, women athletes and coaches voted for the nickname “Westerwinds,” helping fuel an increasingly popular national climate of women’s intercollegiate athletics.• Western Illinois began competing in women’s soccer in 1997 and joined the Mid-Continent Conference (now The Summit League) in women’s soccer in 1999. • After the turn of the century, with the number of sports offered for men and women being equal, attention turned to creating a gender neutral athletics environment. Significant improvements have been made in recent years to marketing and publicity efforts, salaries, facilities and other resources. In 2009, the men and women again began using a unified nickname, “The Fighting Leathernecks.”

• Western Illinois University holds the distinction of being the only non-military institution to officially have its nickname derived from a branch of the military service. • The school began use of the Marine Corps’ official nickname, “The Fighting Leathernecks,” in 1927 when then-athletic director and head baseball, basketball and football coach Ray “Rock” Hanson was granted permission by the U.S. Navy, based on his status as a Marine hero, to use the Marine’s official seal and bulldog mascot along with their nickname.• Hanson coached Leatherneck football for 16 years (1926-41) and was Western’s all-time winningest coach until 1998. In 1950, Western’s football stadium, Hanson Field, was dedicated in his honor. Rock retired in 1964 after serving at Western Illinois for 38 years. He passed away in 1982, at the age of 86.
