Longwood University became the 12th member of the Big South Conference on July 1, 2012.Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in collegeathletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growingpresence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on thenational stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quali-ty athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leader-

ship development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The 2012-13academic year features the Big South’s largest membership (12) and sponsored sports (19) in its 29 years of existence.

The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwelland Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, CharlestonSouthern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner andcontinued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more thanthe required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status.

In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, hashad more than 280 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’ssoccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individualselected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship seven times in addi-tion to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the firstwomen’s golf program advance to the national finals, had the No. 1ranked men’s golfer in the country, had the nation’s top scoring men’sbasketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men’s bas-ketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in theFootball Championship Subdivision in 2006, has had six NFL Draftpicks, and has had two institutions finish in the top 10 in the NCAAMen’s Golf Championships -- including the Conference’s highest-everteam finish in an NCAA event (fifth in 2007).

The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics”was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25thAnniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Bestof the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with LibertyUniversity’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in theclassroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-ath-letes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintain-ing a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had morethan 100 Academic All-Americans in its 28 years of existence.Furthermore, the Big South has recorded double figure totals in NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last three years.

The wait is over. No longer is Longwood an Independent without conference affiliation. The Lancers became the 12th member of the Big SouthConference on July 1. Longwood women’s soccer will compete during 2012 for an opportunity to win a league championship and the accompany-ing qualification into the NCAA Tournament. Veteran head coach Todd Dyer, a 1993 graduate of the school entering his 19th year at the helm, returnsseven starters among 18 letterwinners from a year ago, and has added 10 freshmen to the roster. Dyer has an overall record of 193-119-20 as thesport's only head coach, including 14 winning seasons, and his program has already experienced some success against Big South schools since becom-ing Division I eligible in 2007 – posting a 14-8-3 record against the league’s members over the past five years.

“We've been waiting a long time for this and now that this tremendous opportunity has arrived we're going to do everything within our power tomake the most of it,” said Dyer.

Longwood expects to be led by senior captain and three-year starting forward Lindsey Ottavio|Fairfax (W.T. Woodson), who enters her final sea-son ranked fifth in career goals with 22, along with senior captain and three-year starting defender Natalie Massey|Virginia Beach (Landstown), whohas anchored the squad’s defense. Ottavio was fourth in scoring a year ago with three goals and two assists for eight points, but she will look to enjoya similar campaign to that of her sophomore effort when she posted a team-best 16 goals that ranked seventh in Division I during 2010.

“Our two senior captains realize just how fortunate they are to have a shot at a championship in the final season of their careers,” said Dyer. “Themoment our Big South affiliation became public they were brainstorming and really showing the initiative in bringing this team together during thespring and summer months, and focusing on a common goal.”

The Lancers will also look to senior and two-year starting keeper Kyra Byron|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) and junior and two-year starting mid-fielder Kelsey Pardue|Henrico (Hermitage). Byron played 1429 minutes in front of the net during 2011, allowing only 14 goals for an impressive 0.88goals against average, while making 55 saves for a .797 save percentage, along with six shutouts. She ranks second in career goals against average(0.81) for keepers at Longwood, yielding just 23 goals while playing 2563 minutes. Pardue led the Lancers in scoring a year ago with six goals andsix assists for 18 points. She led the team in every offensive category, including goals, assists, points, shots (43), shots on goal (20) and game-win-ning goals (2, tied with Ottavio).

“It gives us all a little peace of mind being able to have a senior in goal because that experience goes a long way in such a critical position,” saidDyer. “On the attacking side of things, Pardue can be pretty dynamic and creative for us at times so we want to try and let her play with as muchfreedom as possible this season.”

Other returning starters for Longwood include senior Nikki Glisson|Mechanicsville (Hanover) as well as sophomores Kelsey McDonald|KennettSquare, Pa. (Unionville) and Rebecca Soares|Virginia Beach (Kempsville). A midfielder, Glisson was third in scoring last season with three goals andthree assists for nine points. A forward, McDonald was fifth in scoring as a freshman with two goals and two assists, totaling four points. A defend-er, Soares added an assist a year ago.

“Nikki can help us in a variety of positions, but most of her work for us will be in central midfield this fall,” said Dyer. “Mac started in the backfor us most of last year, but since then she's really settled into the forward position and her pace and athleticism should create some good matchupsfor us in the front third of the field. Beks brings pace and a tireless work rate to our back line and we'll give her the green light to push forward fromthe outside back position throughout the season.”

Though finishing an unchar-acteristic 5-4-1 at home last season, Longwood has an impressive 33-13-1 record at the Athletics Complex since becoming DI eligible for the 2007season.

“The key to any season is getting the most out of your opportunities at home and being a team that's really tough to beat on the road,” said Dyer.“In the end, we have to show up mentally and physically for every single game and if we do that, we’ll give ourselves a real shot at a successful cam-paign in 2012.”

“We've been working hard for this opportunity for a many, many years, and now it's time to put up or shut up,” said Dyer. “We have a great dealof respect for everyone on our schedule, especially in the Big South, so now it's just a matter of doing all the hard work and see where it takes us. GoLancers!”

With a legacy of learning dating back more than 170 years,Longwood University has developed a meaningful learning environmentthat extends far beyond the classroom. Founded in 1839 as the FarmvilleFemale Seminary Association, the school was a pioneer first in privateand later in public education. The state of Virginia acquired the school in1884 and renamed it as the Normal School, the first state institution ofhigher learning for women in Virginia. Over the years, the schoolexpanded its curricula and had a succession of names, becomingLongwood College in 1949 and fully coeducational in 1976. On April24, 2002, history was again made at Longwood when Gov. Mark Warnersigned legislation that designated Longwood as a university, effectiveJuly 1, 2002.

The legacy that began in 1839 continues today as LongwoodUniversity offers more than 100 majors, minors and concentrations tomore than 4,800 students. Given its historical roots, LongwoodUniversity enjoys an enviable reputation for teacher preparation. But theexcellence has expanded throughout the university with strong programsin the liberal arts and sciences, business, and professional and pre-pro-fessional programs. Today the coeducational, comprehensive state uni-versity comprises four separate colleges: the Cook-Cole College of Artsand Sciences, the College of Business and Economics, the College ofEducation and Human Services and the College of Graduate andProfessional Studies. The graduate college offers programs in education, communication sciences and disorders, English and sociology, as well asan MBA degree.

Under the leadership of Interim President Marge Connelly,Longwood is committed to developing citizen leaders and provides ameaningful learning environment. Students get an excellent groundingin theory then translate their newly acquired knowledge into action bydoing research, internships, fieldwork and community service.Recognizing the value of experiential learning, Longwood is one of thefew universities in the country to require all students to complete aninternship or similar learning experience before graduation.Additionally, Longwood was the first institution in Virginia to requirethat every freshman have a laptop computer. Technology is integratedthroughout the learning process—an essential element for preparing theleaders of tomorrow.

The Greenwood Library supports Longwood’s mission of develop-ing citizen leaders through a comprehensive array of services andresources. It is a learning-centered environment that fosters intellectual

exchange, scholarly communication, cultural enrichment, lifelong infor-mation literacy and creative expression. In addition, the library providesmore than 343,000 titles, 8,000 DVDs, 5,100 CDs, 900 print journal sub-scriptions, and 160 electronic databases with access to more than 51,000full-text electronic journals. The library also provides integrated tech-nology for information retrieval from libraries throughout the world. This state-of-the-art facility is named in honor of Longwood’s 22ndpresident, Dr. Janet Daly Greenwood who served from 1981 to 1987.

Longwood provides a range of business services to the region andstate through the Longwood Small Business Development Center, whilethe Longwood Center for the Visual Arts serves as an important andinnovative study center and cultural resource for the Commonwealth ofVirginia.

Longwood University also has a tremendous economic and cultur-al impact on Farmville and the surrounding communities. A study con-ducted by the Longwood Small Business Development Center estimatesthat university employees, students and visitors spent more than $90 mil-lion in 2007—with 66 percent of that amount being spent in Farmvilleand the eight surrounding counties.

The Longwood campus, located in the heart of historic Farmville,Va., provides excellent facilities while reflecting the charm, beauty andcharacter associated with its long heritage. The campus community wasenhanced with the opening of Brock Commons, a beautiful pedestrianpromenade that provides a central focal point for the Longwood campuswhile eliminating traffic congestion and safety hazards. Fountains, walkways, outdoor sculpture and beautiful landscaping contribute toBrock Commons, creating a parklike atmosphere for students, faculty, staff and the public.

Longwood’s signature building, Ruffner Hall, was rededicated onApril 23, 2005, and replicates the university’s most beloved building andits beautiful rotunda, dating to the 1880s, which burned on April 24,2001, while undergoing a $12 million renovation. The original eightpaintings on the interior of the rotunda dome, created in 1905 by theItalian-born artist Eugene D. Monfalcone of Richmond, have beenreturned to the dome following an extensive restoration that was underway prior to the fire. The historic Joan of Arc statue, known affection-ately as “Joanie on the Stony,” was also restored recently and returned toits place of honor on the main floor beneath the rotunda. The larger-than-life sculpture is a reproduction of the famous 1870 original created byFrench sculptor Henri-Michel-Antoine Chapu. The statue was a gift ofthe Class of 1914 and symbolizes Joan of Arc as the patron saint ofLongwood.

Ruffner Hall was reconstructed in the classic style based on theoriginal blueprints and drawings from the state archives in Richmond.

The 83,143-square-foot building houses 22 classrooms, four aca-demic departments, the offices of the Vice President for AcademicAffairs and the deans of the College of Graduate and ProfessionalStudies and the Cook-Cole College of Arts and Sciences, named forbenefactors Dr. John R. Cook (Class of 1952) and Dr. Waverly M. Cole.

Between Ruffner Hall and Blackwell Hall, a sunlit hallway formsthe Cole Gallery, which features a collection of more than 500 pieces of19th-century Bohemian glass, Meissen porcelain and English potterydonated to the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts by Dr. Cole.Standing guard over this rare collection of decorative arts, with hersword held high, is the recently renovated equestrian statue of Joan ofArc, or “Joanie on the Pony,” by Anna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington.

Adjoining the Cole Gallery is Blackwell Hall, opened in 1920 asthe campus dining hall. This historic facility, which survived the GreatFire of 2001, was named in the mid-1970s in memory of Dr. Herbert R.Blackwell, professor of English and dean of the college. Today, follow-ing a recent renovation and conversion, Blackwell Hall has a new roleproviding space for social, cultural and educational events for the cam-pus and community. Along with Blackwell Hall, the extensive renova-

tion included the adjacent Virginia and Prince Edward meeting rooms. The Chichester Science Center opened Dec. 6, 2005. The 70,822-

square-foot facility includes 23 classrooms and laboratories, 47 facultyoffices and additional research space for both undergraduate and gradu-ate research projects. The building, which was named in 2007 in honorof John H. and Karen Williams Chichester (Class of 1974), features astate-of-the-art, climate-controlled environment with safety ventilationsystems and hazardous materials safeguards, as well as a high-tech infra-structure for classrooms, laboratories and distance-learning facilities. Agreenhouse and herbarium, housing the world’s largest collection ofVirginia plant specimens, are located on the roof.

More recently, a multifaceted Health and Fitness Center opened inAugust 2007. Located on Main Street adjacent to Frazer Residence Hall, the 74,683-square-foot, 2-1/2-story facility features a wide range ofamenities including an indoor track, basketball and racquetball courts, aclimbing wall, workout rooms, juice bar, and the latest weight, exerciseand training equipment. The building received a Gold CertificationRating in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) fromthe U.S. Green Building Council.

One of the more popular buildings on campus is the two-story,60,000-square-foot Dorrill Dining Hall located on Brock Commonsacross from the Lankford Student Union. Named in honor of Dr. WilliamFranklin Dorrill, Longwood’s 23rd president, this multipurpose facilitywith its curved, colonnaded portico overlooking Iler Field was the firston campus to utilize geothermal heating and cooling. The flexible inte-rior design provides space for banquets, meetings and special eventsalong with a Grand Dining Room seating 500 and an arcade seating anadditional 700.

In fall 2009, the Center for Communication Studies and Theatreopened a new era for one of Longwood’s fastest-growing programs. Thethree-story, 41,983-square-foot building is home to the Department ofCommunication Studies and Theatre and Longwood Theatre produc-tions, and is situated between the south end of Bedford Hall and FranklinStreet across from the Hull Education Center. The new building featuresa highly flexible 174-seat “black box” theater, in which the seats andstage can be moved around. A studio theater, of about 80 seats and alsoflexible, will be used for student productions. There is also a scene shop,a costume shop and a drafting lab. The center also houses the JackBlanton Gallery, which features more than 160 of the 230 pieces of art-work donated by Jack Blanton to the Longwood Center for the VisualArts.

Nearly 1,000 students reside in three campus-managed apartmentcommunities: Longwood Landings at Mid-Town Square, LongwoodVillage and Lancer Village. Some of the amenities and features of theapartments are private bedrooms (some with private baths), full kitchens(most with dishwashers), washer-dryer units, large living areas, high-speed Internet and cable television. Two of the three communities havefitness rooms, and one has a swimming pool and a game room. On cam-pus, Wheeler and Cox Halls recently reopened following complete ren-ovations. These residence halls now include elevators, air conditioning, bathrooms with ceramic tile and new fixtures, contemporary studyrooms with modern amenities, and common areas with outside terraces.

Longwood Landings at Mid-Town Square, which opened in August2006, is a residential village that includes four four-story buildings withthe top three floors dedicated to student housing and the ground floordevoted to leased retail space. Longwood students occupy 96 four-bed-room and 24 single-room apartments. Retailers include Barnes & Noble, which operates Longwood’s bookstore and includes a Starbucks Café,and a Chick-fil-A and Moe’s Southwest Grill operated by LongwoodDining Services (ARAMARK).

Willett Hall, named for former Longwood President Henry I.Willett Jr., is a health, physical education and recreation complex locat-ed on Brock Commons. It has a gymnasium with 1,807 seats; a complete

weight-training laboratory; a 25-meter pool with a 1-meter board, under-water lighting and observation window; a 350-seat natatorium; a moderndance studio with a floating floor and staging capacity; and one of thestate’s best-equipped laboratories for the study of human performance asit relates to exercise, sports, health and the arts. A 3,000-square-footaddition to Willett Hall houses a sports medicine/rehabilitation facilityfor the health, recreation and kinesiology programs.

Not far from campus students can enjoy the facilities at LongwoodEstate, which features a complex of athletic fields for field hockey, lacrosse and soccer, along with a nine-hole golf course. The president’shome, Longwood House, is situated on the estate.

The Commonwealth of Virginia is one of the original 13colonies. Named for the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I of England,Virginia was England’s first successful overseas colony and the siteof the first permanent English settlement in America. West Virginiawas part of Virginia until 1863.

Virginia’s rich political heritage helped shape the democraticprinciples on which the United States was founded. Virginia played

an important role in the American Revolution (1775-1783), and itentered the Union as the 10th of the original 13 states on June 25,1788. During the American Civil War (1861-1865) the state’s capi-tal, Richmond, was also capital of the Confederacy. The state haslong been nicknamed Old Dominion.

George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, andJames Monroe, all Virginians, were founding fathers of the UnitedStates and were among the first five U.S. presidents. Virginia is alsothe birthplace of U.S. presidents William Henry Harrison, JohnTyler, Zachary Taylor, and Woodrow Wilson.

Virginia is the 35th largest state in the United States, boundedon the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the north and east by Marylandand the District of Columbia, on the west by West Virginia andKentucky, and on the south by Tennessee and North Carolina.

According to the 2010 national census, Virginia’s populationwas 8,001,024, ranking it 12th among the states. Virginia Beach(435,619) is one of the most popular resort destinations on the EastCoast, as well as Virginia’s largest city. Richmond (192,913) is thestate capital and a center of banking and insurance, and of both retailand wholesale trade. The Naval Base at Norfolk (229,112) and theNaval Shipyard at Portsmouth (101,377) employ thousands of civil-ians and military personnel. Hampton (145,017) is important for itsaviation activities such as Langley Air Force Base and a NationalAeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) facility. In NewportNews (178,281) is a shipyard that builds naval ships, including air-craft carriers. Alexandria (136,974) is part of the Washington, D.C.,metropolitan area. Lynchburg (67,720) is the site of light industries.Roanoke (91,552) is the largest city in western Virginia.

Civilian and military employment, mostly with the federal gov-ernment, is an essential part of the Virginia economy. The Pentagon, which houses the Department of Defense, is located in Virginia andis the leading federal employer in the northern part of the state. Thereare also important military bases in Virginia, particularly the massivecomplex of army, navy, and air force bases in the vicinity of Norfolk.

Average January temperatures range from less than 32°F in thewest to more than 42°F in southeastern Virginia. Average July tem-peratures range from more than 78°F in the southeast to less than68°F in the western mountains. Total precipitation ranges fromabout 35 to more than 50 inches. Snowfalls are moderate, except inthe mountain regions.

Besides Virginia, three other states - Kentucky, Massachusettsand Pennsylvania - use the term commonwealth as part of their offi-cial names. The delegates to the convention in Williamsburg, whenthe first Constitution of Virginia was adopted on June 29, 1776, usedcommonwealth as the name for the new form of government. It isvery likely they had in mind the Puritans’ rebellion against theCrown in England more than 100 years earlier.

Pennsylvania and Massachusetts also chose to be called com-monwealths after independence from Great Britain. The other 10former colonies took the name “state,” the term used in theDeclaration of Independence. Kentucky was once part of Virginia. When Kentuckians joined the Union as the 15th state in 1792, it alsokept the name commonwealth.

Longwood University will present The GAME 3.0 (Greatest Athletics March Ever), a special commu-nity event to take place on Sunday, August 19, involving a women's soccer home match against VCU at theAthletics Complex in Farmville. The festivities will get under way with a spirit carnival and tailgating inthe Grand Dining Room of the Longwood Dining Hall beginning at 4:30 p.m., a pep rally to feature theunveiling of the new Longwood Fight Song in Willett Hall at 6 p.m., and a 6:15 p.m. march from campusup Fourth Street and Longwood Avenue to the soccer facility on Johnston Drive for the opening kickoff at7 p.m. This is the third consecutive year for the event, a collective effort among the Athletics Department, the Office of First Year Experience, and the Town of Farmville, as last year's The GAME 2.0 was playedbefore a raucous and record-crowd of over 1,800.

“All great institutions have traditions that take on a legendary status,” said Steve Brdarski, Longwoodwomen's soccer associate head coach. “The GAME has become one of Longwood's newest great traditions, unifying our campus and creating the kinds of memories that we will all talk about for a long, long time.Students, faculty and staff, alumni, and friends have come together to celebrate being a Lancer, showing ourspirit, and starting the school year in style with our Longwood Scarves.

“A big 'thank you' goes out to the Office of First Year Experience and Family Programs, along with thePeer Mentors. They have been a big part of the foundation of this event and their work has been a key part to the success.”

Longwood student leader Brian Reid '13 (New Lancer Days Coordinator) will open the pep rally for Interim President Marge Connelly, and willbe assisted by scarf committee members Moriah Elmore '14, Molly Monaghan '15, Ben Miethke '13 and Darrien Drummond '14. A limited numberof the commemorative Longwood Lancers' scarves will be distributed at the pep rally. The rally will serve as motivation for everyone to march to theAthletics Complex where they will cheer on the Lancers in their home opener against the visiting Rams. The grand Marshall will be Rob Blankenship'00 who is the creator of the new fight song 'Hail to Longwood U.' which will be released at the rally. Farmville Town Manager Gerry Spates is expect-ed to speak and march as well, as this event welcomes all new students to both the Longwood and Farmville communities.

“I'm excited again this year for The GAME 3.0,” said Stacey Wilkerson, Longwood Assistant Director for First Year Experience & FamilyPrograms. “I think it will be even more spirit driven than last year. The scarves have a little different look this year and I think the students will likethem. I look forward to seeing everyone in a few short weeks. Go Lancers!”

Transportation will be provided to students who want to participate in the event but choose not to march. There will be concessions sponsoredby ARAMARK, and a shuttle service back to campus will be available beginning at 8:15 p.m.

The GAME came about during the spring 2010 after Brdarski and Wilkerson, along with former SGA President Ben Brittain '11 brainstormedideas to incorporate athletics into New Lancer Days (NLD), Longwood's extended four-day orientation experience for all new students leading up tothe start of the fall semester. NLD provides new students an opportunity to meet classmates, develop friendships with upper-class student leaders, learn about valuable resources available on campus, and explore a variety of issues that they will undoubtedly face during their time at Longwood.
