Credentials should be used for professional use only and individuals who abuse the use of their credential may be removed from the facility and will lose their future privileges.

Interview PolicyAll player and coaching staff interviews must be made through Sports Information Director Matthew Kifer at least one day in advance. Players and coaches are not available for pregame interviews. Interviews may be conducted after the game, following a 10-minute “cooling off” period. Every effort will be made to accommodate your requests, but players will not be asked to miss class, study hall, practices or medical treatment to conduct interviews. Players’ cell or home numbers will not be released by the Sports Information Office.

Fresh off a historic 2011 campaign, the Vulcans will feature a new look this season. First-year head coach Gene Smith, who was an assistant with the program the last two years, returns only three starters from last year’s PSAC Championship team that registered the first undefeated regular season in program history. Entering spring practice, scoring offense appeared to be the strength of the team with NSCAA First-Team All-American Carley Work and PSAC Freshman of the Year Chelsea Crockett both returning. However, Work suffered a season-ending injury and will miss the entire 2012 season after tying the single-season school record and leading the PSAC with 19 goals last year. Crockett ranked among the league leaders as a freshman with 23 points and seven assists despite starting just seven games. Crockett will likely be joined in the starting midfield this season by sophomore Megan Politowski and junior Stephanie Thompson. A captain on this year’s team, Thompson enters her first season as a starter after playing 15 games in career and Politowski gained significant experience last season by appearing in 16 games as a true freshman. Sophomore Haley Henderson will also provide experience depth to the midfield, as she also played 16 games last year. Sophomores Jordan Gray and Erin Hogan, along with junior Kelsey Russo, open training camp as the projected starters at forward. Hogan was an All-PSAC selection last year after leading the league and ranking among the national leaders with 12 assists. A veteran player, Russo has scored nine goals while primarily playing as a reserve in 48 career games. Gray tallied five points while playing on a limited basis last season. The forward position features quality depth in sophomores Taylor Scurci and Bethany Smyda, the 2010 PSAC Freshman of the Year. Smyda registered

43 points, including a league-leading 11 assists, as a freshman before missing all of last season due to injury. Scurci gained valuable experience last year, playing in 16 games as a true freshman. The Vulcans return only one of four starters on defense that helped limit opponents to just 10 goals during the season. The departed trio of Kelsey Fisher, NSCAA Third-Team All-American Kayla Klimasko and Capital One Academic All-American Kristen Orrett combined to start 236 games over the last four years. Senior Kayla Fransko will anchor the back line after starting 22 games last year. She has registered 37 points in her career, including 11 points on two goals and seven assists last season. Fransko looks to be joined on defense by sophomore Nicole Mayers, redshirt freshmen Danielle Macleary and freshman Taylor Piovesan. Mayers appeared in eight games primarily as a reserve last season and Macleary redshirted in 2011 after being an all-state selection in Delaware. In addition to three new starters on defense, Cal U will feature a new goalie this season following the graduation of three-year starter Paula Jackson. An NSCAA Third-Team All-American in 2011, she shattered the single-season and all-time school records for wins, shutouts, goals-against average and minutes. Sophomore Ashley Magruda will garner the starting role after an impressive spring practice. She played in five games last year, highlighted by a shutout in her first career start. Junior Ashley Smyda and redshirt freshman Kristin Baierbach provide depth to the position.

After serving as an assistant coach with the program the previous two years, Gene Smith enters his first season as head coach at Cal U in 2012. While on staff, the Vulcans have compiled an impressive 38-2-6 overall record (.891) and a dominating 24-1-3 mark (.911) in conference play. Cal U also earned berths to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two seasons after previously reaching the post-season only once prior to 2010. Last season, Cal U established the school record with 20 wins behind the program’s first-ever undefeated regular season. The Vulcans also captured the first league championship in program history and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament, losing on the road to the eventual-National Champions. In 2011, Cal U led the PSAC and ranked among the top 10 in the country in both goals and goals-against average (GAA). Smith helped coach a trio of NSCAA All-Americans and a pair of Academic All-Americans last season. In 2010, Smith helped coach the Vulcans to an 18-1-4 record with a second-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. That year, Cal U also advanced to the title game of the PSAC Tournament for the first time in program history. The Vulcans featured the highest scoring offense in the league behind the play of PSAC Freshman of the Year Bethany Smyda.

Smith previously served five seasons as the head women’s soccer coach at Plymouth State, an NCAA Division III program in Plymouth, N.H. While with the Panthers, he guided the program to 30-46-10 overall record (.407) with four-straight appearances in the Little East Conference Tournament (2005-08). In his second year at Plymouth State, Smith guided the program to a three-win improvement before finishing with an 8-9 record in 2007. During his tenure, he coached two-time, all-conference forward Lauren Lavery, who finished her career among the Panthers’ all-time leaders in goals, assists and points. A native of Connecticut, Smith finished his playing career as a two-year starter at NCAA Division III Norwich (Vt.) after originally playing at Xavier. He has also competed and coached for several premier teams in his home state. Smith also enjoyed success in semi-professional and professional settings with various teams in the United Soccer League (USL) and abroad. In addition to his collegiate experience, he served as the Director of Coaching

for the New Hampshire Classics and was the head coach of the under-17 Olympic Development Program (ODP) team. Under Smith’s direction, the team advanced to the regional finals in back-to-back seasons – a first for New Hampshire Soccer. He also served with the US Youth Soccer ODP in Connecticut and Vermont. Smith currently holds a “B” license from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF). He earned his undergraduate degree from Norwich in 1998 before completing a master’s degree from Northeastern (Mass.) in 2009.

A former four-year starter at NCAA Division III Emory (Ga.), Laurel O’Neal enters her first year as a coach with the Cal U women’s soccer program in 2012. O’Neal played with the Eagles from 2003-06, starting 71 games and tallying eight points on one goal and six assists in her career. She was named a team captain and earned All-University Athletic Association (UAA) First-Team honors as a senior. O’Neal earned All-UAA honorable mention in 2003 and 2004 and helped Emory post a combined 49-22-4 overall record (.680) during her career. While with the program, the Eagles made NCAA Tournament appearances in both 2004 and 2005.

A native of Chapel Hill, N.C., O’Neal holds a “C” license from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and a national certification from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). She has coached with current Cal U head coach Gene Smith at the club level with the Beadling Soccer Club. O’Neal has also coached youth soccer in West Virginia and Georgia. O’Neal completed her undergraduate degree from Emory in psychology before earning two master’s degrees from West Virginia.

To advance our mission of building the character and careers of students, Cal U relies upon committed faculty, motivated students, challenging programs and exceptional facilities. We have more than 150 undergraduate programs that will jumpstart your intellectual development in a variety of fields, from business to education to science and technology. Our graduate school programs provide you with an opportunity to further develop your academic experience at the graduate or post-graduate level. Cal U Global Online offers convenient and state-of-the-art classroom delivery of quality academic programs. Work at home, in the office, on vacation, in the early morning or late at night, wherever and whenever you want. Our Character Education Institute provides character education to Cal U students, faculty and staff, and corporate training to regional organizations and businesses. The institute serves as a resource center for education majors, and assists school districts and local organizations in advancing character development. American Democracy Project (ADP) is focused on producing graduates who are committed to being active, involved citizens in their communities. The project helps engage students in activities and projects designed to increase their intellectual understanding and commitment to participate in the civic life of the United States.

For 12-straight semesters, Cal U athletic programs have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher.

The Vulcans led NCAA Division II and ranked sixth overall among all institutions with a school-record 13 Capital One AcademicAll-Americans during the 2011-12 academic year.

A record total of 246 Cal U student-athletes, representing all sports were named to the Spring 2012 edition of the Cal U Athletic Director Honor Roll.

A record of 175 student-athletes from Cal U, representing all sports, were named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Scholar-Athletes for the 2011-12 academic year.

The Vulcans rewrote the record books in 2011, setting the school record for wins, posting the first undefeated regular season in school history, winning the program’s first conference title and advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years. Led by NSCAA Atlantic Region and PSAC Coach of the Year Al Alvine, Cal U finished the year with a 20-1-2 overall record after compiling an undefeated 15-0-2 mark during the regular season. The Vulcans finished the year ranked No. 6 in the final NSCAA Top

25 poll after reaching as high as No. 2 twice during the regular season. Touting the second-highest scoring offense in NCAA Division II, the Vulcan offense was led by the tandem of the junior Carley Work and senior Breeanna Robinson. Work and Robinson each tallied 44 points behind 19 goals, with both marks equaling the single-season school record. In her only year with the program, Robinson finished second in the nation with eight game-winning goals. Work was an NSCAA First-Team All-American after garnering Daktronics Atlantic Region and PSAC Player of the Year honors. The Cal U defense allowed only 10 goals on the season and tied the school record with 14 shutouts. An NSCAA and Academic All-American, senior goalkeeper Paula Jackson led the conference with a 0.457 goals-against average, an .870 save percentage and 1,968 goalie minutes. Classmate Kayla Klimasko garnered NSCAA Second-Team All-America honors after starting all 23 games

for the Vulcans. Fellow senior defender Kristen Orrett set career highs with seven goals and 15 points and was also selected an Academic All-American. For the first time in school history Cal U swept all three PSAC postseason awards, as forward Chelsea Crockett was named PSAC Freshman of the Year. Crockett finished the season with 23 points on eight goals and seven assists. Following the season, Alvine became the head coach at Duquesne and assistant coach Gene Smith was elevated to head coach.

HISTORY With the growth of soccer in the United States during the 1980s, California University of Pennsylvania saw the opportunity to enter the women’s college soccer game early on in its development, while conforming to Title IX gender- equity regulation. Due to the relative infancy and lack of quality women’s soccer programs across the country, the Vulcans were able to attract several top players and put together quality seasons early on, despite relatively little amount of support from the general university population. The first season that Cal U fielded a women’s soccer team was 1990 and the first head coach was Rob Kettle, who was also in his first season as the men’s soccer head coach. That season, the Vulcans posted a 7-8-1 record as Kristie Strunk collected a then-school record 18 goals. The next season, the man who was instrumental in the founding of both soccer programs at Cal U, Dennis Laskey, returned to the university to take over both soccer teams. In 1992, Cal U registered its first winning season with a 12-5-1 record and 2-1-0 mark in league play. In 1993, the team finished 10-10 and had the first all-region player in program history as freshman Teresa Ribar earned second-team honors after compiling 37 points on 15 goals and seven assists. The 1994 campaign marked one of the most successful in school history, finishing 12-5-1 and out-scoring their opponents 57-21 during the first year that the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) sponsored women’s soccer. That season, the Vulcans placed two players on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-America teams and set several single-season individual records that remain today. Cal U Hall of Famer and second-team all-region player Sherry Valera led the team in scoring that season with school records of 19 goals and 44 points, which still rank as the top figures in program history. Two players registered another school record that season, as Caroline Acome and Kim Kottmeier each posted 14 assists. That season also marked the first accolade in the career of three-time all-region player and Cal U Hall of Famer Audrey Dawson, who finished third on the team with six goals, nine assists

and 21 points. From the mid-90s to the early 2000’s, Laskey led the program with several top players. In 1998, Kelly Giardetti led the team with 12 goals and 30 points, while goalkeeper Heather Powelson made a school-record 248 saves, which was the highest total in NCAA Division II that year. In 2002, Nicole Bartkus took

over the coaching duties as Laskey moved over to focus on the men’s program full-time. Bartkus would lead the Vulcans for five years, with her best finish being a 9-9-0 mark in 2002. Cal U took a big step forward in 2007 when it brought in head coach Al Alvine to oversee the women’s soccer program. Under Alvine’s guidance, the Vulcans have raised the standard of excellence for Cal U women’s soccer. In 2009, led by Amanda Heister who tied the single-season school record for goals with 19, Cal U made its first appearance in both the PSAC and NCAA Tournaments. That season Alvine and Heister earned PSAC West Coach and Player of the Year honors, respectively, as the Vulcans set a then-school record with 19 wins. In 2010, the success continued as the Vulcans made their first appearance in the PSAC Championship before earning a second-straight NCAA Tournament berth after being ranked as high as No. 4 in the NSCAA national poll. Cal U placed a school-record seven players on the All-PSAC teams as Bethany Smyda earned conference Freshman of the Year honors as well as Regional Player of the Year laurels from Daktronics after recording 16 goals, 11 assists and 43 points. Goalkeeper Paula Jackson tied her s i n g l e - s e a s o n school record for wins with 18 and established a new record with a 0.34 g o a l s - a g a i n s t average. Cal U reached even greater heights last season, posting an

undefeated record in the regular season, claiming the first PSAC Championship in school history and breaking the school record with 20 victories. Featuring the highest scoring offense in team history, the Vulcans advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years and reached as high as No. 2 in the national polls during the season. The trio of Jackson, Kayla Klimasko and Carley Work were each selected NSCAA All-Americans, while Jackson and Kristen Orrett became the first Academic All-Americans in school history. The Vulcans also debuted a state-of-the-art soccer complex in 2011. Cal U posted a perfect 13-0-0 record at the new facility, highlighted by a 2-1 victory over Kutztown in the PSAC Championship. Following the season, Alvine became the head coach at Duquesne after guiding the Vulcans to over 70 wins in five years. While the history of Cal U soccer is bright, the future looks even brighter with new head coach Gene Smith and a premier facility.

The Vulcans reached the post-season for the first time in 2009, winning 19 games andadvancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.

Amanda Heister was a four-time All-PSAC West selection andwas named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year after scoring 19 goals in 2009.

In 2011, the Cal U men’s and women’s soccer programs started playing their home games at the Phillipsburg Complex which is just three blocks from main campus. The facility features a ProGrass artificial turf field with a walking track around the perimeter and seating for 500 fans with a press box for media. There are newly renovated locker rooms for the Cal U men’s and women’s soccer teams, visiting teams, coaches and officials and a light system that maximizes on-field action while minimizing light spill into the surrounding neighborhood. The Phillipsburg Complex also serves as the practice home for both soccer programs and is utilized during the summer as the Vulcans host their annual middle and high school camps.

PSAC Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into

NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s

estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly

Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division

I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000

who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

ACTING PRESIDENT On May 16, 2012, Geraldine Jones was named acting president of California University of Pennsylvania. Jones graduated from California State College in 1971 and began her career in education as a second-grade teacher in the Albert Gallatin School District, in Uniontown, Pa. She returned to California in 1974, serving as program director for Upward Bound for 20 years and as chair of the Department of Academic Development Services for 11 years. She was associate dean of the College of Education and Human Services for two years before serving as dean from 2000-2008. In July 2008, she was named provost and vice president for academic affairs. A member of the Cal U Alumni Association board of directors, Jones has received numerous honors, including the Cal U Alumni Association’s John R. Gregg Award for Loyalty and Service, the Black Alumni Association’s Outstanding Service Award, and the Community Service Award given by the Minority Students Association at Penn State Fayette. In 2010 Jones was one of 50 Women of Excellence honored by the New Pittsburgh Courier, one of the oldest and most prestigious black newspapers in the United States. Jones is a lifelong member of Mt. Zion AME Church of Brownsville, Pa., where she has been the church pianist since age 14. She has been married to Jeffrey B. Jones for 37 years; they have two adult daughters and a granddaughter.
