SEASON PREVIEW

2012 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE2

For the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team there is one goal forthe 2012 season, make the Atlantic 10 Championship. With the fieldextended to eight teams this year with the addition of Butler and VCU,the Hawks are poised to return to the conference playoffs after bare-ly missing the past few seasons.

"Everything we have been working on since the end of last sea-son has been how can we get back to the Atlantic 10 Championship,"said head coach Jess Reynolds. "We have a good core group ofreturning veterans and the incoming class gives us the most depththat we have had."

Amongst the returning starters, reigning A-10 Midfielder of theYear, junior Mo Hawkins, comes off a season in which she led theHawks in points and tied for the team lead in goals. In just two years,Hawkins has proven to be one of the top offensive players in team his-tory, entering the year fifth all-time in points (42) and poised to addto her impressive resume.

With Hawkins play shifting between midfield and forward attimes, Reynolds believes a trio of upperclassmen will help fill startingspots. Senior Ali Yozwiak and juniors Megan Duffy and ShannonFarrell proved a knack for scoring and should contribute greatly to theHawks' attack.

Adding to that, sophomores Cailyn Alfieri, Alicia de la Rosa andKersten Formento and freshmen Shannon Westhead, Erica GraziosiAshley Volm, Olivia McEachern and Morgan Michon will challengefor playing time.

Gaining valuable experience, junior co-captain Emily Irons iscoming off a career-best 17 games played, and teamed with sopho-more transfer Jill Root should solidify the Hawks' midfield. An NEC All-Rookie Team honoree, Root comes to Hawk Hill after starting 11games at Mount St. Mary's and tallying two goals and four assists.

The pair, with Hawkins, junior Devin Griffin and rookie JoySantarelli should provide Saint Joseph's flexibility to adjust theiroffense and maintain its relentless pursuit.

Possessing the most veteran of position, the Hawks' backlinereturns several key players, led by graduate student and co-captainKayleigh Summers. Appearing in all 18 games, Summers helped theHawks to a combined seven shutouts last season.

The only rookie to start every game in 2011, sophomore McHalePerkins joins senior Taylor Mallory, juniors Nicole King, MorganCirce, Lindsey King, sophomore Carly D'Esposito, Katie Beattie,Kelsey Marchesano and freshman Lindsay Horst in giving SJU its mosttalented defense grouping in years.

In net, senior Christine Neal and Lauren Jancuska will battle forthe starting time. The duo shared time in goal in 2011 and a 0.94 goalsagainst average. Freshman Allison Ebling will compete for time in theHawks' most competitive spot.

With the goal of making the postseason set for this year's Hawks,Reynolds believes the work ethic and desire to win makes this year'sclub on the verge of accomplishing that goal.

"Our team is very focused and they are going to play a relentlessstyle. We're going to fight for every loose ball and give ourselves theopportunity to succeed," said Reynolds.

Reigning Atlantic 10 Midfielder of the Year Mo Hawkins begins theseason fifth all-time in career points with 42.

Senior goalkeeper Christine Neal enters the season tied for third all-time in career shutouts with eight.

Several Hawks posted career years in 2010, whilethe team fought hard despite several key injuries.Hawkins became the third player under Reynolds’gudiance to earn both A-10 All-Rookie Team and All-Conference honors in the same season, while MaggieLupinski was named an All-Conference HonorableMention. Additionally, Pfeiffer helped lead a SJUoffense that increased its production in goals-per-game, assists and points from the previous year.Hawkins and Pfeiffer also became the first pair of SJUteammates to finish amongst the conference’s top 10in scoring.

In 2009, Reynolds pushed her team to the brink ofa postseason berth as the Hawks remained in con-tention for the postseason heading into the regularseason finale. Having graduated the Hawks’ top scorer and goalkeeper, Reynolds’ coaching ability shined in2006 as Saint Joseph’s fought into the final weekend for a playoff spot. Despite falling shy of theprogram’s fourth-straight postseason appearance, Reynolds coached the Hawks to a single-sea-son best 33 goals, while helping Ali Wean become the squad’s first ever A-10 Offensive Player ofthe Year. 2011 YEAR IN REVIEW

The Saint Joseph’s women’s soccer team boasted one of its mostformidable scoring tandems in recent history in 2011, while itsdefense and goalkeeping kept the Hawks in contention for an Atlantic10 postseason berth heading into the final weekend of the season.

After a slow start to the season that included losses at Villanovaand Binghamton, Saint Joseph’s bounced back with a 1-1 tie atDelaware. Mo Hawkins tallied the Hawks’ goal in the draw and helpedSJU gain momentum.

Backed by a 1-0 shutout win at Mount St. Mary’s, Saint Joseph’swould go on to win five of its next seven games as both the offenseand defense stood tall.

Jen Pfeiffer began her quest to break the Hawks’ all-time goalrecord with her first of the season at Mount St. Mary’s, whileChristine Neal posted the first of seven shutouts for SJU on the year.

The Hawks would post a 1-1 tie against Drexel and dropped ahard-fought 2-0 contest at Penn, but rebounded with four straightwins that saw SJU allow just one goal over that stretch.

Pfeiffer and Hawkins controlled the pace of the game in a 2-1 winat UMBC. Saint Joseph’s posted its most dominant performance ofthe season to date the following game with a 4-0 win over FairleighDickinson, in which four different Hawks scored.

Pfeiffer and Morgan Circe combined for all three SJU goals, whileNeal and Lauren Jancuska split time in net for their second straightshutout. A two-goal performance from Hawkins and another sharedshutout at NJIT lifted the Hawks’ record to 5-3-2 heading into Atlantic10 play.

Saint Joseph’s defense continued to play well to open conferencecompetition, but the offense stalled as losses to La Salle andRichmond and double overtime draws to Fordham and GeorgeWashington gave the Hawks just two points after the opening twoweeks.

Hawkins and Pfeiffer led an offensive outpouring against Templeas SJU topped its city rival, 7-1. The pair combined for five goals, whileMaggie Lupinski and Kersten Formento tallied a goal each.

A critical road stretch at Dayton and Xavier hindered the Hawks’postseason hopes as they picked up one point and needed winsagainst St. Bonaventure and Duquesne in the final weekend to gain apostseason bid.

Nicole King put SJU up early against the Bonnies, but the Hawkscouldn’t hold the lead as their postseason hopes came to an end witha 2-1 loss.

Playing their final game at SJU, the Hawks' six seniors made amajor impact as they led SJU to a 4-0 victory over Duquesne. Pfeifferbecame the program’s all-time leading scorer with a pair of first halfgoals, while Hawkins and senior Sandra Mackey tallied the final twogoals and Neal made a pair of saves for the shutout in the seasonfinale.

Additionally, Hawkins’ play garnered her All-Mid-Atlantic FirstTeam honors as well as A-10 Midfielder of the Year and All-Conference First Team recognition, while Pfeiffer was named to theA-10 All-Conference Second Team.

With nine goals in 2011, Jen Pfeiffer set Saint Joseph’s record for goals in acareer with 33.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant

motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto,“The Hawk Will Never Die”.

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At thattime, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name wasappropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive ofthe aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJUfollowing the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 56-year history. It has been selected as thenation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’sBasketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall ofFame.
