2012 YEAR IN REVIEW

Picked to finish 13th in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll, SaintJoseph’s proved pundits wrong last season as the Hawks finished sixthin the conference standings and earned their first postseason bidsince 2005.

Backed by stellar defense and timely scoring, the Hawks openedthe season with a 3-0-1 record as they set the tone early for their suc-cess. Senior goalkeeper Christine Neal posted two of her sevenshutouts on the year in the opening two weeks, while classmate AliYozwiak and junior Mo Hawkins collected a pair of goals en route towins over Binghamton, Villanova and Fairfield.

Saint Joseph’s bounced back from three-straight losses with twowins in its final three nonconference games to give the team momen-tum heading into conference play.

Having closely missed out on an A-10 Tournament bid the pastfew years, the Hawks displayed grit and determination in its openinggame at Temple. Behind a goal by Hawkins and a shutout perform-ance from Neal, SJU began conference play with a 1-0 win over city-rival Temple.

Hitting the road for games at Duquesne and St. Bonaventure, theHawks’ defense stepped up. In the opening game, Saint Joseph’s andthe Dukes played to a scorless double overtime draw, while a late goalby the Bonnies proved to be the difference in the second contest.

Posting four points in the first two weeks of A-10 play, the Hawkswere among the leaders vying for position in the standings headinginto home matches against Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Tallying the first two goals against the Minutewomen, SJU’sdefense limited the opposition to just one shot on goal it picked upthree points in the win. The Hawks followed with a strong gameagainst the Rams as Hawkins scored early and McHale Perkins addeda late goal, while Neal and the backfield pitched their third shutout inconference play.

The Hawks took to the road for crucial games at Saint Louis andButler. Opening at the Billikens on Friday, Saint Joseph’s got a goalfrom Hawkins and kept the game tight as the teams played to a 1-1double overtime draw.

Looking to keep pace with the conference leaders, it was Nealand the Hawks’ defense that stepped up at Butler. Despite being out-shot 32-4, Saint Joseph’s earned an important point in its 0-0 tie withButler.

Returning home for the final weekend of the regular season, theHawks controlled their own destiny. Saint Joseph’s hosted A-10 lead-ing La Salle to start the weekend and after a scoreless regulation, theHawks headed to their third-straight extra frame. Saint Joseph’s hada chance to win as a ball clanked off the top right crossbar, but itwould be the Explorers who scored in the second overtime to keepthe Hawks from clinching a postseason spot.

Needing a victory over Fordham to extend its season, SJU wouldget an early second half goal from Hawkins and relied on the steadyplay of Neal and the backline to earn a 1-0 win and the sixth seed inthe A-10 Championship.

Making the conference postseason for the fourth time underhead coach Jess Mannella, the Hawks faced third-seeded VCU in thequarterfinals. Despite a valiant effort from the Saint Joseph's, the sea-son would come to an end with a loss to the Rams.

With the success of 2012 still prominent, Saint Joseph’s forgedtheir name amongst the top-tier teams in the A-10. Returning thecore of the roster, Mannella and the Hawks are poised for a returntrip to the A-10 Championship in 2013.

Christine Neal became the first goalkeeper in SJU history to be named to theAtlantic 10 All-Conference First Team after going 9-7-4 with a 1.17 GAA.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant

motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto,“The Hawk Will Never Die”.

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At thattime, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name wasappropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive ofthe aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJUfollowing the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 57-year history. It has been selected as thenation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’sBasketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketballmagazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall ofFame.
