The Hawks will play their first home game onWednesday, February 24, the first of nine home games to beplayed on Sweeney Field this spring. Under the direction of sec-ond-year head coach Alex Kahoe, Saint Josephs returns 18 Hawks, including nine starters, and welcomes eight newcomers for the2016 season. Senior midfielder Mallory Grey and junior attackerNora McCallion were selected captains for the 2016 season.

We are looking forward to building off of the success of lastseason while continuing to make improvements every day, saidKahoe. The team is really excited about this year and is workingvery hard. The returners have a very committed mentality, and thefreshmen bring a new energy and intensity to practice. Putting thistogether helps push the competitive nature of our team, whichwill help everyone moving forward.

The Hawks will embark on their 17th year in the Atlantic 10Conference this spring, opening league action at home againstMassachusetts on Friday, April 1 on Sweeney Field. Saint Josephswill see a five-home, four-road game schedule for conference play. The Hawks were voted eighth in the A-10 preseason poll, theleague office announced on February 4.

ATTACKERSThe Hawks return two of last seasons three leading scorers,

who combined for 40 goals and 18 assists, in juniors Sarah Smith(24g, 10a) and Nora McCallion (16g, 8a). This veteran duo will beexpected to lead the Crimson and Gray on the offensive end of thefield this spring.

Turning in back-to-back seasons of 15+ goals and 20+ points,McCallion enters her third year as a starting attacker this season. She turned in a trio of hat tricks last season, including in wins overAmerican and Monmouth, and posted a career-high six-pointeffort (2g, career-high 4a) in SJUs win over Longwood.

Nora has the ability to quarterback our offense this year, said Kahoe of her junior co-captain. She has a great lacrosse IQand excellent field vision.

Smith was one of four Hawks - and the only non-defensiveplayer - to make all 16 starts last season en route to leading thesquad in assists (10) and free position goals (6) and ranking secondin points, goals, shots (58) and shots on goal (47). She scored in thefirst nine consecutive games of the season and posted a career-high seven-point effort (career-high 5g, 2a) in a win at Monmouth. As a result of a committed work ethic, Smith averaged 3.6 pointsper game and 3.0 goals per game in SJUs five wins last year. Thejunior will be expected to be a scoring threat once again this year.

SJUs only senior attacker, Bianca Angstadt turned in back-to-back10+ point seasons over her freshman and sophomore campaignsand has made her way back into the rotation after coming off ofan injury that sidelined her for all of last season.Redshirt freshman and 2014 High School All-American MorganLamey and freshman Francesca Donato (Langhorne,Pa./Neshaminy), a three-time All-Suburban One Conference FirstTeam selection, will add to the attack.

MIDFIELDERSWith her outstanding speed and raw talent, senior Mallory

Grey transitioned from the back line to the midfield unit this off-season and will be called upon to lead the Hawks this spring. Oneof four Hawks to make all 16 starts last season, Grey ranked sec-ond on the squad in draw controls (33) and tied for third in causedturnovers (17) but will be utilized on both the offensive and defen-sive ends of the field in 2016.

With her speed, we need her in the midfield to be a two-way,dynamic player, said Kahoe. She has been more confident on theoffensive end of the field and has been playing really well with theattack. We are looking forward to her stepping up this year onboth ends of the field.

An exciting addition to SJUs midfield comes in the form ofrookie Rebecca Lane, out of Victoria, Australia (MaribyrnongCollege). This past summer, Lane co-captained the 2015 U-19Australian National Team at the World Championships, where sherecorded 24 points (13g, 11a) and 20 draw controls through sevengames en route to being named to the All-World Team.

With Bec playing in two U-19 world cups, she has the experi-ence we are looking for to take us to the next level, said Kahoe. Her dynamic play will make an impact both offensively anddefensively in the 2016 season.

Junior Maggie Egan was outstanding on both the offensiveand defensive ends of the field last season, ranking in SJUs topfour in points (22), goals (15), and assists (7) and adding 19 groundballs, 17 caused turnovers, and 17 draw controls, and will return inthat capacity in 2016.

Maggie is a great defender, said Kahoe. She is athletic, dynamic, and explosive. She has the ability to be a strong, two-waymidfielder, and we are excited for her potential.

A core group of sophomores will also be in the mix to make animpact this spring in draw control specialist Dana Garbinski, scor-ing threats Aly Gormley and Kristen Kelbon, and defensive stand-out Kate Payne.

Injuries limited the playing time of both Garbinski (6g, 18 drawcontrols) and Payne (12 ground balls, 7 caused turnovers) last sea-son, but both have worked hard and stepped up this offseason.

Gormley (9g, 5a), a 2015 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team selec-tion, and Kelbon (7g) will also be called upon to make contribu-tions on SJUs offensive end. Both started more than half of SJUsgames last season and made all 16 appearances.

Junior Megan Tracy, who recorded an impressive 6 groundballs and 6 caused turnovers to go with a goal and an assistthrough five appearances last season, and junior TaylorDachowski bring additional depth and experience while four-time

All-Bayside Conference selection Ally Beck (Ocean City,Md./Stephen Decatur), two-time All-Inter Ac First Team pickSinead Brierley (Oreland, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill Academy),2013 3A/4A state champion Michaela Cassidy (Annapolis,Md./Broadneck), and two-time High School All-American FirstTeam selection Hayley Sabol (Londonderry, Vt./Burr and BurtonAcademy) will add to SJUs midfield unit.

    DEFENSE

Senior veteran Caroline Hagan will anchor SJUs defensive

unit in 2016. A two-year starter who has played in 45 career

games, Hagan is a solid defender that makes a significant impact

for the Hawks on the back line. Last season, Hagan led the squad

in caused turnovers (20), which moved her up to seventh on SJUs

list of all-time career caused turnovers (54). She has recorded 20+

ground balls and 20+ caused turnovers in back-to-back seasons,

including 26 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers last year.

Returning as our anchor of the defense, Carolines speed and

defensive awareness will make an immediate impact in her final

    season, said Kahoe

Classmate Courtney Emanuele is one of three returning

Hawks to have made all 16 starts last season en route to ranking

second on the squad in both ground balls (27) and caused

turnovers (19). Against the 13th-best team in the nation,

Emanuele turned in three ground balls and three caused turnovers

against Penn and added a career-high four ground balls and a

career-high four caused turnovers at St. Bonaventure.

Junior Becky Daub made eight starts, including in the final

seven games of the season, as a defender last year and turned in

12 ground balls and nine turnovers in 15 appearances.

Graduate student Ashley Alden (Ivyland, Pa./William

Tennent) enters her first season with the womens lacrosse pro-

gram after two seasons with SJUs varsity softball squad. Her ath-

leticism and versatility combined with the leadership and experi-

ence she brings day in and day out has made for an exciting addi-

tion to SJUs defensive unit. Alden, junior Maura Monti and soph-

omore Catie Vivian will round out SJUs back line.

    GOALKEEPERS

Senior Genevieve Giblin (12-19) returns for her fourth season

between the pipes for the Crimson and Gray in 2016. Giblin made

32 appearances with 29 starts in her first two seasons on Hawk Hill

and turned in the fifth-best all-time, single-season goals against

average (8.82) as a sophomore in 2014. She currently ranks sixth

all-time in career saves (216) at SJU and owns a 9.84 goals against

average and .410 save percentage in 1897:13.

She is the leader of our defense, said Kahoe. She has a pos-

itive attitude and has stepped up a lot. She has made a lot of

changes and has found that she is able to make more saves and be

    more effective for us.

Freshman Jenna Ansell (Hunt Valley, Md.), who won two high

school national championships at McDonogh, will back up Giblin in

    net.

    ASSISTANT COACHTHE HAWK

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has beenflapping its wings for 59 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughoutevery basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will NeverDie."

Saint Josephs athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname Hawkssince 1929. At that time, the schools yearbook editor initiated a contest among the stu-dent body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with Hawks win-ning out over Grenadiers by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typ-ified the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aeri-al attack which has made our football team famous. Football, ironically, was discontin-ued at SJU following the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It hasbeen selected as the nations top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, SportsIllustrated for Kids, Street & Smiths Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketballmaga-zine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

    THE HAWK

  • Sweeney Field, formerly known as Finnesey Field, has beenhome to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Josephs University inover 80 years of use. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU footballsquad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years andis the current home of the mens and womens soccer teams and themens and womens lacrosse teams. The most recent upgradeoccured this summer, as the TigerTurf that was laid down in 2008 wasreplaced with FieldTurf and Saint Josephs track was resurfaced.

The field was renamed Sweeney Field in Fall 2013 upon comple-tion of an extensive expansion project. The venue has significantlyincreased the seating capacity for SJUs varsity lacrosse and soccerprograms. The new name recognizes the contributions of Sean S.Sweeney 94 (MBA), a member of the Universitys Board of Trusteesand the lead benefactor to the renovation project. Sweeney Field wasblessed in conjunction with Hawktoberfest on October 12, 2013 whilea formal dedication was held on April 5, 2014.

The current expansion includes the addition of 1,200 permanentseats to the hillside nearest to the Universitys iconic Barbelin Hall aswell as the addition of 1,100 portable seats on the opposite side ofthe field, increasing total seating capacity to 3,000. In addition, thefacility includes a new state of the art press box and enhanced soundsystem.

Opened in 1929 and planned as the centerpiece to a 70,000-seatfootball stadium, SJU was forced to eliminate the fields originalgrandstand and hillside seating in 1960 due to the construction ofVilliger (now Post) Hall/Bluett Theater. Since 1990, the field hasundergone a number of upgrades and enhancements designed toexpand usage and functionality, including installation of AstroTurfartificial surface prior to the currently TigerTurf surface, lights, andbleachers. Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber mate-rial in 2009 to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons.

Currently the home of SJU mens and womens varsity soccer andlacrosse teams, Sweeney Field has also served as the home venue forHawk baseball, field hockey, football and softball, in addition toperipheral usage by the mens and womens track teams, along withcountless club, intramural and recreational activities. Legend has itthat a 1777 Revolutionary War skirmish took place on the site.

Finnesey Field had been named after the late James T. Finnesey.A native of Wyncote, Pa., parishioner at the Gesu and president of alocal auto manufacturer, he was a member of the Saint JosephsFoundation Committee which was established in 1922 to raise sup-port for the Colleges relocation to Philadelphias Wynnefield neigh-borhood. Finnesey was a lead donor to the stadium project in 1927.

In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Sweeney a true-multi-purpose facility. In 1994, the installation of lights furthered theuse of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next toMandeville Hall added another touch of renovation to a historic sta-dium.

Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Sweeney homeuntil 1959, and the Saint Josephs mens soccer program was startedin 1958 and played every season but except 1960 at Sweeney.Leading up to the 2015 season, the squad had compiled an overallmark of 171-199-37 in 57 seasons, at Hawk Hill, the most victories ofany program on Sweeney Field. SJU opened its playing grounds witha 6-0 victory over Rutgers-South Jersey in October 24, 1958.

The field hockey team played on Sweeney Field until 2007 andnow practices and hosts games on the new Ellen Ryan Field on theMaguire Campus. The location has also been home to womens soc-cer since 1996 and the field hockey team wrapped up its last seasonon Sweeney Field in 2007.

The womens lacrosse squad is 78-110 in 23 seasons on HawkHill. The best season came in 2009 when the Hawks went 10-8 andplayed their way to the Atlantic 10 championship game. The firstgame was played on March 23, 1993 when SJU defeated GwyneddMercy, 18-4.

The mens lacrosse team has compiled an overall 72-91 mark in23 seasons on Hawk Hill. SJUs 5-1 regular-season home record in2014 marked the best winning percentage in program history. Also in2014, the Hawks earned their first win over a nationally-ranked oppo-nent in program history with a 9-7 victory over #12 Bryant on April 5,the day that Sweeney Field was officially dedicated.

Overall, the site has seen 1,298 games entering the 2015-16 aca-demic year, and SJU teams put together a total record of 589-650-59.
