Under the direction of first year head coach Alex Kahoe, the Hawks will embark on a new era of Saint Joseph’s women’slacrosse this season. SJU returns 18 letterwinners, including sixstarters, and welcomes nine newcomers for the 2015 season.

“We are looking forward to getting on the field this sea-son,” said Kahoe. “We are excited for the depth, athleticism, and versatility in every position. We have a wide range of bal-anced experience mixed with new faces, and we look forwardto seeing it all come together and seeing the hard work in theoffseason translate to our play on the field.”

OFFENSEThe Hawks return SJU’s top three goal scorers from last

season in senior midfielder Julia Falcone, junior midfielderKelly Phelan, and sophomore attack Nora McCallion, a trio thatcombined for 49 percent of SJU’s total goals (72-of-148) and 42percent of SJU’s total points (91-of-217) in 2014.

The veteran duo of Falcone and Phelan will lead SJU’s mid-field unit this season. Falcone and Phelan have found successon the field and, with their speed, athleticism, and experience, will be expected to lead the younger group and to help thenewcomers adjust to the new systems. Both exhibit a drive, passion, and heart that will lead the Hawks throughout the2015 season.

Entering her fourth year on Hawk Hill, Falcone owns ateam-best 63 career goals in 43 appearances. She scored ateam-best 28 goals on 48 shots and was SJU’s only offensiveplayer to start all 16 games last year.

Breaking into a starting role at the start of the 2014 season,Phelan registered a team-best 33 points on 25 goals and eightassists en route to ranking in SJU’s top three of every offensivecategory. Phelan was the Hawks’ top FPS performer, nettingeight goals on 13 attempts.

A 2014 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie selection, McCallion led allSJU freshmen in every offensive category last season andreturns for her second season as an experienced leader on theattacking unit this year. McCallion broke into a starting role onthe attack during the final nine games of the 2014 season enroute to totaling 30 points on 19 goals and 11 assists.

A trio of juniors will round out the returning attacking unit, led by tri-captain Bianca Angstadt. Angstadt has been consis-tent in her first two years on Hawk Hill, averaging 9.5 goals perseason. Classmates Emily Bowers (11G, 20A) and BonnieMcShane (4G, 7A) can also be expected to contribute on theoffensive end of the field.

The depth of SJU’s midfield unit is substantial as the Hawksbring back a core group of six sophomore midfielders who allearned minutes on the field last season.

Sarah Smith and Taylor Dachowski comprise a pair ofoffensive performers that has the ability to impact SJU’s mid-field unit this spring. Smith (3G, 3A) plays with an intensity andpassion that will help drive and inspire the Crimson and Graythis season while Dachowski’s ability to provide bursts of quick-ness will be a welcomed spark to propel the offensive unit.

Katelyn Ambrose and Becky Daub will be contributing fac-tors from the defensive midfielder standpoint. Ambrose (5GB)will be involved in the draw while Daub’s physicality, tough-ness, and solid game sense will provide the sophomore theopportunity to be in the mix for ground balls.

Megan Tracy and Maura Monti will round out SJU’s return-ing midfielders in 2015.

Saint Joseph’s coaching staff sees extreme potential in itsseven offensive additions in freshman attacks Rena Carabases(Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape), Kristen Kelbon (Mount Laurel,N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep), and Morgan Lamey (Hockessin,Del./Charter School of Wilmington) and midfielders DanaGarbinski (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy), BrittHazard (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham), Taylor Jacobs(Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial), and Kate Payne(Hockessin, Del./Archmere Academy).

Of the incoming attacks, Carabases can certainly be expect-ed to make an impact in her first year. The 2014 South JerseyCoaches Association Attack of the Year, Carabases is quick

around the goal, has a solid shot, and can make plays happen. The rookie did a remarkable job of working on her role in theattack and fitting into the attacking system during the offsea-son and will certainly be called upon to contribute this season.

Of the incoming midfielders, Garbinski could be an extremefactor on SJU’s scoring unit. The two-time Academic All-American is a speedy player with a solid understanding of thegame who, even as a freshman, understands defensive andoffensive concepts fully. She has proven to be an all-around,solid player throughout the offseason and will be expected toutilize her versatility to be a strong playmaker for the Hawksthis spring.

Kelbon’s speed adds another dimension to SJU’s attackwhile Lamey could also make an impact for SJU. Payne has astrong sense of game awareness and has already proven her-self to be a young leader among her teammates while Hazardand Jacobs will round out SJU's new midfielders.

DEFENSEAlthough the graduation of 2014 Atlantic 10 All-Second

Team selections Britt Hanrahan and Kaitlyn McSwiggan leftholes in SJU’s defensive unit, Saint Joseph’s back line hasworked its way to being a strength of the squad, led by a coretrio of junior tri-captain Courtney Emanuele, junior MalloryGrey, and sophomore Maggie Egan.

Emanuele (3G, 5A) saw minutes in every game last seasonto earn 10 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers in 16 appear-ances, and the tough, hard-working junior will lead the defen-sive unit this season.

As a rookie last year, Egan was SJU’s top defensive fresh-

man off the bench and earned 11 ground balls and seven

caused turnovers in 15 appearances. Although limited in min-

utes last season, Grey can also be expected to make an impact

with her speed, as the junior owns SJU’s fastest 40-yard sprint

record (4.87) of all time.

The returning defensive unit will be rounded out by junior

Caroline Hagan, who is SJU’s only returning member of last

season’s starting back line. Hagan was good for 26 ground balls

and 21 caused turnovers in 16 starts last season.

Freshmen Aly Gormley (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) and

Catie Vivian (Slingerlands, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names)

will bring new talent and excitement to the defensive end of

the field.

GOALKEEPERS

Senior tri-captain Nora McGeever and junior Genevieve

Giblin will compete for the starting spot between the pipes

come opening day. McGeever exhibits solid leadership and

presence in net while Giblin owns two seasons and 29 starts

worth of experience.

In five career appearances, McGeever owns a 9.77 goals-

against average and .263 save percentage in 86:24. Giblin start-

ed all 16 games in net last season to post a 10.39 goals-against

The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughoutevery basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will NeverDie."

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks”since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the stu-dent body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” win-ning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typ-ified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aeri-al attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontin-ued at SJU following the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It hasbeen selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, SportsIllustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball maga-zine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

Sweeney Field, formerly known as Finnesey Field, has beenhome to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University inover 80 years of use. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU footballsquad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years andis the current home of the men’s and women’s soccer teams and themen’s and women’s lacrosse teams.

The field was renamed Sweeney Field in Fall 2013 upon comple-tion of an extensive expansion project. The venue has significantlyincreased the seating capacity for SJU’s varsity lacrosse and soccerprograms. The new name recognizes the contributions of Sean S.Sweeney ’94 (MBA), a member of the University’s Board of Trusteesand the lead benefactor to the renovation project. Sweeney Field wasblessed in conjunction with Hawktoberfest on October 12, 2013 whilea formal dedication will be held this spring

The current expansion includes the addition of 1,200 permanentseats to the hillside nearest to the University’s iconic Barbelin Hall aswell as the addition of 1,100 portable seats on the opposite side ofthe field, increasing total seating capacity to 3,000. In addition, thefacility will includes a new state of the art press box and enhancedsound system.

Opened in 1929 and planned as the centerpiece to a 70,000-seatfootball stadium, SJU was forced to eliminate the field’s originalgrandstand and hillside seating in 1960 due to the construction ofVilliger (now Post) Hall/Bluett Theater. Since 1990, the field hasundergone a number of upgrades and enhancements designed toexpand usage and functionality, including installation of AstroTurfartificial surface prior to the currently TigerTurf surface, lights, andbleachers. Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber mate-rial in 2009 to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons.

Currently the home of SJU men’s and women’s varsity soccer andlacrosse teams, Sweeney Field has also served as the home venue forHawk baseball, field hockey, football and softball, in addition toperipheral usage by the men’s and women’s track teams, along withcountless club, intramural and recreational activities. Legend has itthat a 1777 Revolutionary War skirmish took place on the site.

Finnesey Field had been named after the late James T. Finnesey.A native of Wyncote, Pa., parishioner at the Gesu and president of alocal auto manufacturer, he was a member of the Saint Joseph’sFoundation Committee which was established in 1922 to raise sup-port for the College’s relocation to Philadelphia’s Wynnefield neigh-borhood. Finnesey was a lead donor to the stadium project in 1927.

Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Sweeney homeuntil 1959, and the Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer program was startedin 1958 and played every season but except 1960 at Sweeney. Thesquad has compiled an overall mark of 165-192-31 in 53 seasons atHawk Hill, the most victories of any program on Sweeney Field. SJUopened its playing grounds with a 6-0 victory over Rutgers-SouthJersey in October 24, 1958.

In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Sweeney a trulymulti-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered the

use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next toMandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadi-um.

The field hockey team played on Sweeney Field until 2007 andnow practices and hosts games on the new Ellen Ryan Field on theMaguire Campus. The location has also been home to women’s soc-cer since 1996 and the field hockey team wrapped up its last seasonon Sweeney Field in 2007.

The women’s lacrosse squad is 74-104 in 21 seasons on HawkHill. The best season came in 2009 when the Hawks went 10-8 andplayed their way to the Atlantic 10 championship game. The firstgame was played on March 23, 1993 when SJU defeated GwyneddMercy, 18-4.

The men’s lacrosse team has compiled an overall 66-88 mark in21 seasons on Hawk Hill. SJU’s 5-1 regular-season home record in2014 marked the best winning percentages in program history. Alsoin 2014, the Hawks earned their first win over a nationally-rankedopponent in program history with a 9-7 victory over #12 Bryant onApril 5, the day that Sweeney Field was officially dedicated.

Overall, the site has seen 1,259 games entering the 2014-15 aca-demic year, and SJU teams put together a total record of 570-633-56.

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what isnow the Atlantic 10 Conference was con-ceived. What started as an eight-school,men’s basketball-only affiliation has growninto a 14-university, 21-sport league that isuniversally hailed as one of the best confer-ences in the country.

That growth and prominence is a directresult of the ideals and commitments of themember institutions of the Atlantic 10 –Davidson College, The University of Dayton,Duquesne University, Fordham University,George Mason University, The GeorgeWashington University, La Salle University,University of Massachusetts, University ofRhode Island, University of Richmond, St.Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph'sUniversity, Saint Louis University and VirginiaCommonwealth University.

The Atlantic 10 was proactive in navigat-ing sweeping conference realignment, adding George Mason University for 2013and Davidson College in 2014. The additionsfollow a very successful first year by VirginiaCommonwealth University, which began fullmembership on July 1, 2012. The league con-tinues to draw national praise for its deci-sions during conference realignment inselecting institutions driven by academicsand basketball. The league was deemed the“winner” of conference realignment in 2011-12. The three additions were guided by thefive-year Strategic Initiative Plan that wasadopted during the 2010-11 academic year.

The 14 member institutions of the A-10are united and strengthened by their diversi-ty. Each is extraordinary in its educationalmission, whether of a Catholic faith, a privateuniversity or a land grant institution. Thevaried pursuits of each member prove thatthere are many threads that weave the fab-ric for a great conference.

The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a totalpopulation of over 76.5 million people with-in its geographic footprint of eight states andthe District of Columbia, will crown champi-ons in 21 sports this year: baseball, men'sand women's basketball, men's and women'scross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women'sindoor and outdoor track & field, women's

rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball,men's and women's swimming & diving,men's and women's tennis, and women'svolleyball.

The presidents and chancellors ofAtlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction withAtlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V.McGlade, have made a strong commitmentto making the academic and athletics equa-tion a successful one. Over the years, theleague membership has strived to better rec-ognize the academic accomplishments of itsstudent-athletes. The Commissioner's HonorRoll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or bet-ter, recognized 2,653 student-athletes in2013-14.

The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports andhonors two student-athletes as the A-10Student-Athletes of the Year. Moreover, theAtlantic 10 provides 10 postgraduate schol-arships with $7,000 grants to selected stu-dent-athletes. In 2013-14, nearly 200 stu-dent-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition.

The Atlantic 10 Conference annuallyearns high marks in the NCAA Academic met-rics. This includes ranking fifth among all 32Division I Conferences in the AcademicProgress Rate (APR) and in the GraduationSuccess Rate (GSR) in the past year’sannouncements.

Success on the playing field has mirroredthe A-10’s classroom prowess, with theleague earning NCAA postseason bids in eachof its 21 sports, including two men’s soccerbids and a record 13 men’s and women’sbasketball bids. Men’s basketball in theAtlantic 10 saw a record six teams earn NCAATournament berths and for the seventhstraight year an A-10 team advanced to thesecond weekend of play when Dayton madea run to the Elite Eight.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCESaint Joseph’s nationally-recognized aca-

demic reputation is confirmed by ongoingacknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News &World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tra-dition of intellectual inquiry and personalconcern manifests itself in small, challengingclasses taught by a caring faculty. Graduateassistants do not teach, so undergraduatescan be sure they are receiving the very besteducational experience from trained experts.One-on-one interaction between studentsand faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s.

A solid liberal arts curriculum providesacross-the-board learning for every student.Supporting that curriculum are comprehen-sive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that preparesstudents not only for employment and grad-uate school, but for life itself.

In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which hous-es the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, theCenter for Food Marketing and the region'sfirst "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms."An 87,000-square-foot international academ-ic center featuring state-of-the-art distancelearning technology, it is located near thecorner of 54th Street and City Avenue.
