TheHawkWillNeverDie!

Saint Joseph’s University

The Saint Joseph’s men’s lacrosse team is excited for the2011 season as it enters a new era in its first season in theColonial Athletic Association. Returning 31 letterwinners, including seven starters, to go with a talented group of 18 new-comers, head coach Pat Cullinan is confident his team is readyfor the challenge the new conference brings.

“The team is excited about this opportunity and the atti-tude and work ethic has been fantastic,” said Cullinan.“Collectively, the fall and preseason practices, lifting and con-ditioning sessions, and the classroom efforts have been excel-lent and will positively impact the 2011 season.”

The Hawks open their season on Saturday, February 12 atLehigh and will seek out revenge after falling to the MountainHawks last season in a hard-fought 7-6 battle.

Leading the pack will be tri-captains senior Rob Saraceniand juniors Trevor Dougherty and Griffin Ferrigan. Saraceniwill lead the defense with Ferrigan backing him up in net whileDougherty will manage the midfield.

“Trevor has a solid work ethic and a great knowledge ofthe game,” said Cullinan. “His lacrosse IQ allows him to lead byexample and we will look to him to shore up the midfield thisseason.”

Saraceni, a two-year captain, returns after suffering hissecond season-ending injury last year. In 2009, he received theteam’s “Most Improved” award after picking up 20 groundballs, tallying 28 caused turnovers, and scoring a goal ondefense.

“Rob is working hard to return from his injury,” saidCullinan. “He is a great communicator and we will look for himto anchor our teams defense.”

Ferrigan will look to lock things down between the pipesagain this season and be more of a vocal leader behind thedefense. The returning starter led the Metro Atlantic AthleticConference in saves per game last year averaging 12.5 andtotaling 150 saves on the season.

“Griffin has a strong presence in goal and has been work-ing hard to expand his communication skills,” said Cullinan.

Although the Hawks graduated last year’s leading scorer,Sean Evans, the squad returns two attackmen who accountedfor 23 percent of the team’s offense in senior Scott Cullinanand sophomore Kyle Williams.

Cullinan, who scored 12 goals last season, was a 2009Inside Lacrosse Magazine All-MAAC Pre-Season selection andas a freshman was named to the 2008 All-MAAC Second Team, scoring 21 goals and dishing five assists.

Williams, the team’s 2010 Rookie of the Year, was third onthe team in goals (13) and assists (9) last season and, alongwith Cullinan, will lead a talented group of returning veteranson offense.

Junior attack Matt Dougherty and sophomore midfielderSteve Dunn, who combined for 13 goals and six assists last sea-son, will look to make a bigger impact on the Hawks scoringthis year.

“We have a strong, veteran attack unit, with Kyle, Matt,Scott, and Kyle Mahoney all being key contributors returningthis season,” said Cullinan.

Behind the leadership of Dougherty (Trevor) and Dunn inthe midfield, will be a group of athletic veterans in senior KevinWadach, juniors Augustus Quinzani and Bobby Hurley, andsophomore Mark Anton.

“They have been working hard on their ability to attackand put consistent pressure on defenses,” said Cullinan of theveteran midfielders.

At the faceoff, junior Chris Jenkins is joined by sophomoreKeith Preston and freshmen Will Abbott and AnthonyCognetti.

Newcomers looking to make an impact in the midfield willbe freshmen Patrick Townsend and Johnny Simanski, whilejunior transfer from Bryant Ian Correia and freshman BillyAnnesley will compete for time in the midfield.

Defensively, Saraceni and senior Pat Harner will lead aclose defensive unit featuring Matt Germain, Bill Bonner,Shawn Mowry, and Noah Weaver.

At the defensive midfield, short sticks Daniel Lieb and PatSinnott return to join Dougherty (Trevor) while returning longstick midfielders are Justin Rogers, Keith Belson and ColinRoemer.

Freshman Jack Moran and Army transfer Ted Hospodarwill compete for minutes on the Hawks’ defense.

Backing up Ferrigan in goal will be sophomore Chris Moffa, who saw action in six games last season and tallied 17 saves, while transfers Pat Kurowski and Chris Stoken will providedepth behind the veterans.

Saint Joseph’s faces a challenging schedule as it enters theCAA, but Cullinan and the Hawks are excited about the oppor-tunity.

“We will face the toughest schedule in school history,” saidCullinan. “We are preparing physically and mentally to meetthis challenge.”

The Hawks' tough slate consists of six teams ranked in theUnited States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association coaches'preseason poll, including fourth-ranked Maryland and Brown(20) in non-conference play and four conference opponents -Hofstra (9), Massachusetts (16), Delaware (17), and Drexel(18).

“We are looking forward to continuing our rivalries withDelaware, Drexel and Penn State, as well as establishing newcompetitive relationships with Hofstra, Towson andMassachusetts,” Cullinan said.

After the Hawks’ season opener at Lehigh, they returnhome to host Bryant (Feb. 19), one of five teams SJU will facefor the first time this season.

In March, Saint Joseph’s will play Rutgers at home before aseries of road games at Drexel (March 9), Brown (March 12),Maryland (March 20), and Penn State (March 26).

The Hawks return home in April to host Massachusetts(April 2), Hofstra (April 9), Delaware (April 16), and Penn (April20) before closing out the season at Towson on April 30.

With a tough schedule ahead of them, the Hawks have onegoal in mind.

“We will compete each day to the best of our abilities, strive to make daily improvements, both individually and as ateam and battle through adversity as one,” said Cullinan.

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flappingits wings for 55 years.

The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying inconstant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing theSaint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die."

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929.At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a sym-bol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers”by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crim-son and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football teamfamous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 55-year history. It has been select-ed as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids,Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated forthe Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

Finnesey Field, currently inits 82nd year, has been home to10 different varsity squads atSaint Joseph’s. Opened in 1929as home to the SJU footballsquad, the field has undergonenumerous changes over theyears and has been home to overa thousand SJU varsity games, matches and track meets.

The most recent upgradehappened in 2008 when theAstroTurf, laid down in 2001, wasreplaced with new, state-of-the-art TigerTurf.

Home to the men’s andwomen’s lacrosse teams, men’sand women’s soccer teams, thefield has seen other modifica-tions since its inception in 1929.The prospect of a 70,000-seatbowled stadium for football wasdashed when the sport was dis-continued following the 1939 season.

Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Finneseyhome until 1959. Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer began in 1958 andplayed every season but one (1960) at Finnesey. In 1960, the orig-inal grandstand as well was the hillside seating near OverbrookAvenue were eliminated as Villiger (now Post) Hall and the BluettTheatre were built. In the process of the 1960 construction, thefield’s elevation was raised five feet to its current location.

In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Finnesey atruly multi-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights fur-thered the use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 onthe hill next to Mandeville Hall were another touch of renovationto a historic stadium.

The men’s lacrosse team has compiled an overall 53-68 markin 18 seasons, the best of which was a 6-2 campaign in 2000. SJUopened its playing grounds with a 9-2 loss to Wesley College onMarch 3, 1993.

The women’s lacrosse squad is 56-80 in 18 seasons on HawkHill. The best season came in 2004 when the Hawks went 5-2 enroute to an 8-6 campaign. The first game was played on March23, 1993 when SJU defeated Gwynedd Mercy, 18-4.

The location has also been home to men’s soccer since 1958and women’s soccer since 1996 and the field hockey teamwrapped up its last season on Finnesey in 2007.

Overall, the site has seen 1,129 games entering 2011, andSJU teams put together a total record of 518-564-47 in 81 years.

TheHawkWillNeverDie!

Saint Joseph’s University

The 2010 Saint Joseph’s men’s lacrosse season was a yearfor rebuilding, giving younger players a chance to step up andgain experience and create a strong bond for the future.

The season began with a rough start, as the Hawksopened their season on a cold and snowy Finnesey Field andhad to reschedule two more games because of immensesnowstorms. The rescheduled games were played at Penn andDrexel and were followed by three more road games beforethe Hawks finally returned home, only to play in heavy windsand rains as the result of a nor’easter.

After a season-opening loss to Delaware, the team facedoff against Lehigh on a snow-plowed Franklin Field where theMountain Hawks retaliated from the previous season’s 9-8SJU victory with a 7-6 win. The Hawks saw two scores apiecefrom senior Charlie Gorman and sophomore Matt Doughertywhile sophomore Griffin Ferrigan had a career-best perform-ance in net with 23 saves.

Despite falling to Bellarmine and Drexel on Vidas Field,Ferrigan totaled 27 saves in the two games, accumulating 66saves in just the first four games before getting injured.

The Hawks closed out non-conference play with losses toRutgers and Penn and suffered a loss at home to 14th-rankedBrown on a flooded home field. Freshman Artie Marrapesestepped up his play against Penn and Brown to be namedMAAC Player of the Week for March 15. He assisted threegoals, netted one, picked up 11 ground balls, and won 17-of-35 in faceoffs in the two games.

The Hawks dropped their conference opener to 2009MAAC Champion Siena, and fell to Marist, but things lookedup for squad as it headed into April.

SJU hosted Canisius in an overtime thriller on the firstSaturday in April. After being down 8-5 at the end of the thirdquarter Marrapese and senior Sean Evans each scored to put

the Hawks within one. After another Golden Griffin goal, bothscored again in the last two minutes to knot the game andsend it to overtime. Unfortunately, Canisius scored 37 sec-onds into the first overtime period to steal the 11-10 win.

The heartbreaker left the Hawks hungry for a win as theyhit the road and earned their first victory 11-5 over VirginiaMilitary Institute. Freshman Kyle Williams had a career-highthree goals and two assists while Marrapese and ScottCullinan each added four points in the win.

Saint Joseph’s returned home to celebrate Senior Day andits seven graduating seniors with another victory, this timeover Detroit. After being down 6-4 in the beginning of thefourth, Evans and Williams sparked a 7-1 SJU run to take thewin, 10-7. Evans tallied four points on his Senior Day, as didWilliams.

Meanwhile Ferrigan returned to good health, making hispresence in net known as he stopped 18 shots against VMIand 15 against Detroit. He tallied 36 saves in the final threegames, including losses to Mount St. Mary’s and Manhattanand the Hawks’ 9-8 victory over Wagner in which he totaled17 saves with six in the fourth quarter and a key save in thefinal minute.

Overall, the squad finished the 2010 season out strongand looks to be a tough competitor in its first season in theColonial Athletic Conference in the 2011.

Janet Greder, in her seventh year as the univer-sity’s director of educational support services forstudent-athletes, directs a multi-faceted program ofacademic support that affords student-athletes theopportunity to succeed both in the classroom andon the field. In addition to overseeing the program

for all of SJU’s student-athletes, she works directly with the men’s basket-ball program.

Greder came to SJU after three years as an academic coordinator atthe University of Iowa. From 1997 to 2001, she was the assistant academ-ic coordinator at Creighton University. A native of North Platte, Neb., shereceived her bachelor’s degree in education from the University ofNebraska-Kearney in 1986 and a master of science degree in counselingfrom Nebraska-Omaha in 1997. She resides in Drexel Hill, Pa.

Janet Greder and Ken Krimmel monitor academic progress of thestudent-athletes in compliance with SJU and NCAA rules and regula-tions. The office is a liaison between the athletic department and thefaculty, while serving as a secondary academic advisor to the stu-dent-athletes, helping with registration, among other issues.

The office also assists student-athletes in career developmentand runs time management and study skills workshops throughoutthe academic year.

All freshman student-athletes, along with select upperclassmen, are required to attend study hall four nights a week. The office, locat-ed in the Science Center 113, has eight individual study rooms, eachequipped with a computer.

Coordinated through the Office of Educational Support Servicesfor Student-Athletes, Saint Joseph’s student-athletes utilize numer-ous support programs available through the University. Those pro-grams include the Learning Resource Center, Career Services, theCounseling Center and the Writing Center. The services available tostudent-athletes; career choice assistance, academic skills work-shops, individual tutoring and personal development, allow for suc-cess in the present while preparing for the future.

The office is aware of the challenges today's student-athletes faceboth on and off the playing field. To prepare them, the Office ofEducational Support Services for Student-Athletes organizes andfacilitates a Life Skills Program. This is designed to provide student-athletes with educational experiences that will assist them in bridg-ing the gap from high school to college and from college to profes-sional life. The program is designed to reach each student-athletebased on his or her individual needs. The Life Skills Program focuseson the individual as a whole – academically, athletically, and emo-tionally – and on the changing needs and skills of that individual inthe years during and after college. Among the wide range of topicscovered are time management, stress management, resume writingand interviewing, alcohol and drug awareness, and financial plan-ning.

The office also oversees the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee(SAAC), which acts as liaison between the University community andthe student-athlete body. Members are selected by respectivecoaches or team members at the beginning of each academic year.SAAC works to encourage and promote student-athletes to be stu-dent leaders that represent individual varsity teams and the entireathletic department as a vocal, integral part of the greater SaintJoseph's community.

Ken Krimmel is in his third year as assistantdirector after serving an internship in the depart-ment in 2008. A 2003 graduate of Penn State with adegree in elementary education, he received hismaster’s of education degree from Temple in 2008.
