11-12 SEASON Preview This off-season has seen a lot of changes in the Randolph College men’s lacrosse program, mainly the departure of the program’s inaugural head

coachinScottKetcham.Ketchamledtheprogramthroughthefirstthreeyearsofitsexistence,butfirst-yearheadcoachAndySinclairwashiredasthenewhead

mentor as the WildCats push forward.

Sinclair is no stranger to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), as he was a four-year player for cross town rival Lynchburg College. His experi-

ence in the conference as both a player and an assistant coach will be vital to the improvement of the WildCat men’s lacrosse team.

“It’s been a great start to the year so far,” said Sinclair. “Things haven’t been that much different from my experience as an assistant and as a head

coach at the high school level. There’s no trick to it really, it’s about working hard, gelling together as a group which will get us to where we want to be.”

The hard work has been evident early on, and the results are also apparent. In the team’s preseason scrimmage, Randolph held its own with York

College of Pennsylvania, falling by only one goal on a shot at the buzzer. The notion that the hard work is turning into results has not gone unnoticed by the players.

“CoachSinclairismakingsurethatwe’reworkinghardnomatterwhat,”saidsophomoremiddieJohnGrundy(Gainesville,VA/Battlefield).“We’re

running every day after practice, getting our conditioning in and building that mental toughness for the fourth quarter that we’re going to need to succeed.”

While Ketcham was one loss that the WildCats had in the off-season, two more are also apparent when looking at the roster. Last year’s leading goal

scorer TJ Story is gone, as is All-ODAC second team defender Gage Anderson. While those losses will certainly sting early on, the players think it’s time for other to

shine. One of those players who should answer the call will be junior middie Jon O’Hara (Yorktown, VA/Grafton).

O’Hara returns as a junior after scoring seven goals and dishing out six assists as a sophomore. His dodging skills and ability to create for himself and

others will be vital to the WildCats attack this year. “Offensively, I think a guy like Jon O’Hara will really come into his own this year and start scoring a lot of goals,”

said junior pole Ryan Blackwell (Ashburn, VA/Briar Woods).

Continuing to focus on the attack, one has to look at fellow junior Stephen Allman (Goodview, VA/Roanoke Catholic) as the top returning player for

Randolph. Allman had a team-best 23 points as a sophomore, and also dished out 12 assists on the season. “He’s (Allman) someone to look out for this season

forsure,”saidSinclair.SophomoreBobbyCrosby(Bethel,CT/Bethel)isbackforhissecondseasonwithRandolphafternotching11goalsasafirst-yearplayer.He

is also going to play behind the net more, and will look to facilitate a lot of what Randolph is doing.

Junior John Croney (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) has had a nice camp, and should get a lot of time in the attack, while another face to look for is

sophomore Colton Wood (Chula Vista, CA/Otay Ranch). Wood is extremely athletic and has a howitzer for a shot, but struggled with injuries last year. He will play

attackandmidfieldfortheWildCats,somethingCoachSinclairisexcitedabout.

“He’s someone that can really shoot it, and he should have an opportunity to get looks as both a middie and attack this season,” said Sinclair.

First-year Clay Orshoski (Elkwood, VA/Eastern View) will get some opportunities to score this season for Randolph, while Josh Borgelt (Greenville, SC/Mouldin) has had a nice camp and will look to have a breakout cam-

paign as a sophomore.

Moving to the defensive side of the ball, you have to start with senior goalkeeper Kevin McCracken (Annandale, VA/Annandale). Though not the most athletic of keepers, he is a fantastic ball stopper that

has been between the pipes for every game since the program’s start in 2008. In front of him, the WildCats should have a strong set of defenders, led by Blackwell and sophomore Ryan Pearson (Asbury, NJ/North

Hunderdon).

“I expect a lot out of our defense this season,” said Sinclair. “We have a lot of athleticism on D at the current time and these guys are very intelligent. We’ve taught them an entirely new system than what

they’re used to and they’ve picked it up very nicely.”

Blackwell and Pearson each played all 13 games a season ago, and both have beefed up to handle the rigors of a full ODAC slate. Blackwell was second on the team in caused turnovers with 14, while

Pearson was right behind with 11. Also back this year after starting nine games a season ago is Justin Baker (New Orleans, LA/Jesuit). Baker was out during the fall, and will need time to adjust to the new system.

Senior Greg Herrick (Mt. Airy, MD/Linganore) played in 12 games last season, and is a veteran player that will play a lot defensively, as is sophomore Matt Bray (Woodstock, VA/Claremont). Bray played

mostly during man-down situations last season, but started to get the feel of the college game late last season.

Speelman should spell Grundy here and there, and has shown some ability early in his career. Speelman will also serve as the back-up goalkeeper this season.

In the end, the WildCats understand that it is still a work in progress but that doesn’t mean that the goal isn’t still to win. “We’re looking for wins, and wins quickly,” said Blackwell. “These next couples of

weeksaregoingtobedefinitiveforourprogram;wehavealotofopportunitiescomingup.”

Randolph has a schedule that features 15 games, the most in program history. Randolph will play out of conference games against Christopher Newport (Feb. 19), Piedmont College (Feb. 22), Ferrum

College (Feb. 25), Greensboro College (Mar. 3), Mitchell College (Mar. 10) and Albright College (Mar. 13) before opening conference play Saturday, March 17 at Guilford. Playing in ODAC, Sinclair knows the challenge of

The home slate in conference features battles with Virginia Wesleyan College (Mar. 28), Washington & Lee University (Mar. 31) and preseason ODAC favorite and 11th-ranked Lynchburg College (April 4).

ODAC CONFERENCE

Celebrating its 36th year of operations, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference

(ODAC) is one of the nation's largest Division III conferences. The 14-member ODAC,

including one associate member, stands as the second-largest multi-sport NCAA Divi-

sion III conference in the country.

The league was formed on May 18, 1975 as the Virginia College Conference

and began operations in September of 1976. (The name chane to Old Dominion

Athletic Conference became effective January 1, 1976). Charter members were eight

colleges located in the state of Virginia: Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite Col-

lege, Emory & Henry College, Hampden-Sydney College, Lynchburg College, Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College and Washington and

Lee University.

From its initial year of operation through the 1981-82 academic year, the ODAC sponsored competition in 10 men's varsity sports,

CITY OF LYNCHBURGLynchburg is a scenic city located near the eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia. The area has an extensive history beginning with its founding on the James River in the 1760's by John Lynch as "Lynch's Ferry." Today the city has an urban population of over 96,000, including the suburbs of Madison Heights, Timberlake, and Forest. Lynchburg's economy is based on the many high-tech manufac-turing companies located here including cellular communica-tions, nuclear energy, and machinery. This manufacturing and research orientation represents a shift from the mill-based econ-omy of the past, which included foundries, shoes, and textiles. Educationiswell-representedwithfiveareaprivatecollegesanda public community college. Health care includes two hospitals, one of which, Lynchburg General, has been recently renovated into a state-of-the-art facility for the next century. Lynchburg is sometimes referred to as "A City Unto Itself", in part due to geographic and cultural isolation, but mostly in reference to the city's historical avoidance of State and Federal entangle-ments. The phrase was the title of a history book by columnist Darrell Laurant.
