2012 season outlook

In his 14 seasons, Manhattan head Coach tim McIntee has been focused on staying the course in the MaaC and keeping the Jaspers towards the top of the standings. In the 2012 season, “moving ahead” will be the main theme; moving ahead from a difficult 3-13 season, moving ahead with a veteran group and a talented new crop of players.

“We have four senior captains, four guys who have been to the MaaC playoffs and the MaaC Championship game,” says McIntee, who is entering his 15th year at the helm in riverdale. “For us to move ahead, we are going to need the leadership of those guys.”

2011 saw a streak of three-consecutive conference tournament appearances snapped as the Jaspers fell one goal short in the final contest of last season. “I think that we have what it takes but our parts have to stay healthy,” McIntee noted. “leadership has to be what it needs to be. there has to be that hunger. It’s a new year and my mentality is focused on developing our kids. It’s more about us than anybody else.”

goalkeePerCompetition will breed excellence in the

cage for the 2012 Jaspers. the return of starting goalkeeper rich akapnitis brings depth and experience to Manhattan but he will be tested early on with the emergence of freshman Michael Wiatrak. akapnitis saw time in 12 games last season making 10 starts. Both players will compete in games this season as they continue to battle close with one another for the opening day starting spot. William Murphy, who returns to riverdale after a semester at suffolk County Community College, will also be in the mix.

DeFenseMainstays return for the green and white

in the defensive unit, giving Manhattan a balance of veterans and fresh faces. “I think that a lot of parts are back from last year defensively, so we should be a year better,” says McIntee.

senior captains Mike Brooks and steve harvey will provide stability and leadership in front of the cage. Juniors Jeff Mohr, evan Potter, and Dan sweeney add an extra bit of depth and experience in the fight for the starting lineup while sophomores Dan Mcgreevey, and sean McMahon will also compete for time as long-stick Defensive Midfielders.

“We have the depth right now with guys getting better every day,” McIntee said. “We

just need to find that third and fourth guy in the rotation.”

other players who will battle for minutes on the field include a core of freshman centered around Max Kerber, and stefano Costa. Fellow freshmen taylor skaggs, Chad steinetz, and Connor Bishop will look to see time.

miDFielDas the lineup works up the field, the

pressure put on by newcomers does the same. Four year contributors will be joined by wide-eyed freshman looking to make immediate impacts.

the short-stick Defensive Midfielders will be led by a pair of seniors in captain Chris spillane and leader Jordan sherman. spillane missed all of the fall season with an injury but played every game in 2011. they will be joined by junior alex grandal and Brian lenskold, who will also see time at the face-off X.

on the offensive side, captain tyler sabens will have a group of veterans in fellow senior Jonathan Bourne, junior tyler Jarvis, sophomores Mike Casson, Brett Madarasz, and Marcel godino. Jarvis enters his third year as the top returning goal scorer, netting 16 goals in 2011.

a plethora of youth joins the battle-hardened core of Jaspers as freshman Mike Chilvers, James Collins, tyler eidel, erik Kelly and Christopher ottati will all battle for


playing time in their first years in riverdale.at the face-off X, Manhattan will look to a

trio led by junior Jon Crean to improve upon a .398 team percentage in 2011. Crean will be joined by freshmen lenskold and Kevin Cox to help control time of possession.

“It’s going to be an interesting year in the midfield for us,” said McIntee. “I really feel like we are going to have a lot of youth playing in that position.”

attackDespite losing their top scorer from a year

ago, the Jaspers will have a group of players with proven ability. top returning scorer Brendan rogers (12 goals and 12 assists) returns for his senior season along with juniors Paul Moreau and Brian Mcgrath (13 goals).

sophomores ryan Payton and greg smith join crafty scorer levi radbourne for their second tour of duty with Manhattan. radbourne, who red-shirted last season, will have four years of eligibility beginning in 2012. they will also be pushed by two freshmen in andrew hurst and Matt thistle.

“I think a big part of our team will be finding the adjustments,” explains McIntee. “Can we move a kid from midfield to attack or attack to midfield? We’re feeling pretty confident that we have that here.”

scheDule highlighted by dates with two preseason

top-20 opponents, the 2012 Jaspers fourteen game slate features six home contests at gaelic Park.

“I think last year, we bit off more than we could chew playing eight teams that played in the nCaa tournament,” said Coach McIntee. “this year we have done something different adding programs that match us better.”

Past rivalries with national powers Villanova, Denver, and hofstra have been replaced with rising contenders lehigh, Providence, and Binghamton. the Friars return to the schedule begins a “home-and-home” series with the BIg east foe along with similar plans with Mercer, and Princeton.

the season begins with two consecutive road games as the Jaspers travel to Bethlehem, Pa. on Feb. 25 to face lehigh before traveling to meet their first of two national title contenders in the Princeton tigers, who are ranked #16 in the country in the UsIla preseason polls, on Feb. 28.

Manhattan will play their first home game of the season on sat. March 3 when they host Providence at gaelic Park. three days later they will travel to homewood stadium in Baltimore, Md. to face off with UsIla preseason #2 and 2011 nCaa tournament participant John’s hopkins in a game that will be nationally televised on tape-delay on esPnU.

the year’s longest road stretch continues with contests at sacred heart (3/10) and Mercer (3/13) before coming home to take on Binghamton on March 17.

“the non-conference schedule for us is filled with heavy hitters,” said the 15th year head coach. “there are teams that are top 30 programs in the country which will be good for us.”

Metro atlantic athletic Conference play starts off on March 24 on the road in Buffalo, n.Y. when they take on Canisius. Following that contest, the Jaspers begin their longest home stand of the season with a conference game against 2011 conference tournament participant Detroit Mercy on March 31 before stepping outside of MaaC play to host Wagner on april 3.

Virginia Military Institute (VMI) will come to gaelic Park on april 7 on a night where the Jaspers will honor their 2002 MaaC Championship team for their ten year reunion. Following will be two consecutive home games against 2011 MaaC tournament players Marist (april 14) and Jacksonville (april 21) in the programs first ever conference game in the state of Florida. the final game of the year will be played at home against defending conference champion siena at 7 p.m. on april 28.

“We finished last season beating a playoff team in Jacksonville and then one-goal games with Canisius and Marist,” McIntee said. “at the end of the season we finished 3-13 and that’s what we are coming back in to this year until we make change. and we feel we will make change.”

the MaaC tournament will be played in tenney stadium at leonidoff Field on the campus of Marist College in Poughkeepsie, n.Y. beginning May 4 with the Championship game on May 6. the top four teams in the league will make the conference tournament.

now in his 15th season as head coach, tim McIntee has been at the forefront of the successful turnaround and development of the Manhattan men’s lacrosse program. the all-time winningest coach in program history, McIntee has an 88-125 record as mentor of the Jaspers, including a 58-53 mark in MaaC games.

having inherited a fledgling program in the fall of 1997, McIntee wasted no time in establishing the Jaspers as a perennial contender in the Metro atlantic athletic Conference (MaaC). In the spring of 1998, the head coach’s first season on the Manhattan sideline, McIntee’s team started its MaaC run with conference wins over siena and Providence. Under his guidance, the team has qualified for the four-team MaaC tournament seven times (2000, 2002, 2004-05 and 2008-10).

McIntee’s work came to complete fruition in 2002, as his men’s lacrosse squad went on to accomplish a feat never before reached by any other Manhattan team-the Jaspers went undefeated (9-0) in conference play en route to capturing the program’s first-ever MaaC Championship. Manhattan posted a thrilling 9-8 win over Mount st. Mary’s in the MaaC Championship game to earn the conference’s first-ever automatic bid to the nCaa tournament. In the first round of the nCaa tournament, Manhattan dropped a 12-7 decision to a powerful georgetown squad. For his efforts, McIntee was named MaaC Coach of the Year in 2002. the 11 victories that season were the most in team history.

the 2004 team finished the regular season at 7-6 and entered the MaaC Championships with a 5-3 conference record and the number four seed in the four-team tournament. In the semifinals, he Jaspers stunned top-seeded Marist, which entered the postseason with a perfect 8-0 mark during the MaaC regular season. Despite falling to Providence in the final game, Manhattan concluded a season in which they made the playoffs for the second time in three years, a first for the program.

after reaching to the MaaC tournament again in 2005 (its second straight appearance and fourth in six years), Manhattan returned to the tournament in 2008 following a three-year absence. after losing their first two conference games, the Jaspers rallied to win five of their last six and clinched a postseason berth with back-to-back double-overtime home victories over saint Joseph’s and VMI to end the regular season.

the 2009 season was one of the best in program history. the Jaspers qualified for the MaaC tournament for the second straight year and knocked off Mount st. Mary’s in the semifinals to advance to the MaaC Championship game for the first time since 2004. Despite a loss to siena in the title game, Manhattan’s 10 wins in 2009 were the second-most in program history. In 2010, the Jaspers made program history again by qualifying for the MaaC tournament again, marking the first time Manhattan reached the postseason three straight times.

McIntee was honored as MaaC Coach of the Year for the first time in

2000, as the Jaspers qualified for the MaaC tournament for the first time and advanced to the finals, where they lost to saint Joseph’s. the Jaspers finished that season with an 8-9 overall record after going 5-4 in the MaaC during the regular season.

In the summer of 2002, McIntee was selected as a coach for team Ireland at the 2002 World games. he was the offensive coordinator and man-up coach. the Irish team went 6-2 with key victories over Korea, new Zealand, hong Kong and Italy.

McIntee joined Manhattan after a stellar playing and coaching career on the collegiate, professional and international level. While at C.W. Post, McIntee was a three-time nCaa all-american and a four-year letterwinner in lacrosse as a midfielder. McIntee went on to play with team Usa in the 1990 World Championships. he starred in the professional ranks as a member of the new York saints of the Major Indoor lacrosse league. In seven seasons with the saints (1990-97), McIntee recorded 97 points (46 goals, 51 assists), which ranks him among the all-time leading scorers in franchise history.

Prior to Manhattan, McIntee was an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at st. John’s University from 1993-96. he also coached the boys’ lacrosse team at syosset high school in 1996 and 1997, and coached east Islip high school from 1994-1997.

McIntee currently lives in the Bronx with his wife, Deirdre, and two-year-old daughter, emily.


Bryan Wynne Assistant Coach • 1st season (Manhattan, 2008)

Former Manhattan lacrosse player Brian Wynne enters his first season on the Jaspers coaching staff. his primary duties will be working as the offensive coordinator.

a prominent scorer and leader in his playing career (2005-08) Wynne was named team captain in his senior season. that year, Wynne led the team

in assists (16) and points (28) as the Jaspers advanced to the Metro atlantic athletic Conference semifinals. he was named second team all-MaaC for his efforts that season.

Wynne was a member of two MaaC tournament teams in 2005 and 2008. he graduated from Manahttan College in ‘08 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical

education.Prior to returning to riverdale, Wynne

spent two seasons as a coach with Bay shore high school on long Island (2010-11) as well as a year at east Islip (2009), his former high school. he is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in special eudcation.

spencer WrightAssistant Coach • 2nd season (Syracuse, 2002)

Wright enters his second season with Manhattan after spending six years as an assistant at the Fieldston school in riverdale, n.Y., where he helped aid the eagles to two state championships in 2005 and 2007.

a winner at every level, he played an

integral part on two Division I national Championship teams (2000 and 2002) as a midfielder for syracuse University. Following the 2002 nCaa season, his outstanding play earned him 2nd team all-american honors. In 2003, Wright was drafted by the rochester rattlers of

Major league lacrosse and played five seasons professionally.

a Physical education teacher at Fieldston, Wright will serve as a volunteer coach with the Jaspers. he currently resides in Brooklyn, n.Y.

Justin Jensen Assistant Coach • 1st season (Manhattan, 2011)

one of the more prolific offensive threats in Manhattan history, former Jasper Justin Jensen returns to riverdale as a volunteer coach. Jensen was a part of three MaaC tournament teams during his time and ended his career as one of the top scorers in program history.

Jensen currently ranks in the top ten in goals, assists, and points. his 94 total points ranks eighth all-time while his 58 career goals is tenth in Manhattan history. Jensen was also a three-time conference all-academic selection.

an impressive athlete, Jensen was a all-division quarterback at Bay shore high school on long Island.

Dr. Brennan o’Donnell is the 19th president of Manhat-tan College, having assumed the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2009.

Dr. o’Donnell comes to Manhattan from Fordham Col-lege at rose hill, Fordham University’s oldest and larg-est school. as dean of Fordham College, he was the chief academic officer of a College of arts and sciences enrolling about 3,200 students under a faculty of more than 200.

Before coming to new York, Dr. o’Donnell spent 17 years at loyola College in Maryland (now loyola University Mary-land), where he served as a professor of english and, from 1999-2004, as director of the university-wide honors Pro-gram. an active scholar, his teaching and research interests focus mainly upon poetry, especially of the British romantic period, and on religion and literature, particularly contem-porary american Catholic writers. he has authored two books on the poetry of William Wordsworth and co-edited the Work of andre Dubus, a collection of essays published as a double issue of religion and the arts. In addition, Dr. o’Donnell has published articles, essays and reviews in some of the leading journals in his field. at Manhattan, he will continue to hold a faculty appointment, as he had at Fordham and loyola, as professor of english.

as the first president of the College not to be a member of the Brothers of the Christian schools, Dr. o’Donnell is treading new ground at Manhattan College. he has experi-ence in such transitions, however, as he was also the first layperson to serve as dean of Fordham College at rose hill.

his publications and lectures demonstrate a keen engage-ment in issues of faith and education, specifically Catholic higher education. From 1994–2000, he served as editor of the national magazine Conversations on Jesuit higher education, and he was a member of the national seminar on Jesuit higher education from 1993–2000. In addition, he has served as a board member for the lilly Fellows Program and for Collegium, a consortium of Catholic universities that strives to strengthen faculty understanding of and participa-tion in the mission of Catholic higher education.

a native of Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Valley, Dr. o’Donnell earned his B.a. with highest distinction and honors in english at the Pennsylvania state University in 1981, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. he earned an M.a. and a Ph.D. at the University of north Carolina at Chapel hill in english and american literature and language. he is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, awards and honors.

Dr. o’Donnell is married to angela o’Donnell (formerly alaimo), a poet and writer who teaches at Fordham, where she serves as associate director of the Francis and ann Cur-ran Center for american Catholic studies. the couple has three sons: Charles (a graduate of saint John’s University, Minnesota, and a teacher in the st. Paul, Minnesota, public schools), Patrick (a 2009 graduate of Columbia Univer-sity, currently pursuing graduate studies in philosophy in leuven, Belgium), and Will (a senior english major at Fordham).


a 1968 graduate of Manhattan College, Byrnes en-ters his 24th year as director of athletics.

since his arrival back to riverdale in May of 1988, Byrnes has presided over a renaissance period in Manhattan College athletics. During his tenure, the men’s and women’s basketball programs have earned eight nCaa tournament bids (four women, four men). additionally, the Jaspers have appeared in five postseason and preseason national Invitational tournaments (nIt). Women’s soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse began competition at the Division I level under Byrnes, and 14 different teams have won conference championships-men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s outdoor track, men’s and women’s basket-ball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, volleyball, men’s tennis, softball and baseball. In addition, to date, 26 student-athletes have received all-america honors for both athletic and academic achievements.

Before returning to Manhattan, Byrnes spent 13 years with the Morrison-Knudsen Company, one of the largest engineering and construction firms in the nation.

a native of garrison, new York, Byrnes earned his undergraduate degree in physical education with a minor in biology. he also holds an M.B.a. from City University in seattle, Washington.

as an undergraduate, Byrnes was a member of the Jaspers’ club football team. Byrnes served as team captain and played both defensive tackle and offensive

end. he spent one season as an assistant coach and helped guide Manhattan to a 6-2 overall record in 1969.

Upon graduation, Byrnes began a teaching and coaching career at Queen of Peace high school in north arlington, new Jersey. he also served as the school’s director of athletics from 1970-73. Under his leadership, Queen of Peace registered state tourna-ment appearances in baseball and basketball, while also capturing the Parochial “B” state Championship in football (1972).

In addition to his responsibilities at Manhattan, By-rnes served two stints (1997-99, 2004-06) as president of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball associa-tion, at one time the sponsoring body of the nIt. he also served on the nCaa Championship Committee in 1999-2000. he is currently the chair of the Metro atlantic athletic Conference (MaaC) Men’s Basketball Committee and the Committee on athletic admin-istration, as well as a member of the eCaC officials negotiating Committee. In recognition of his years of outstanding contributions to Jasper athletics, Byrnes was inducted into the Manhattan College athletic hall of Fame in 2004.

Byrnes resides in Croton-on-hudson, new York, along with his wife, rosemary. he is the father of five children: Bob, Carolyn (Manhattan ’97), Brian (Man-hattan ’99), Darren and Brigid.
