2012 season outlook

rIVerDale, n.Y. – For the third time in as many seasons, the Manhattan women’s lacrosse team will be under the direction of a new head coach. Diane haddeland begins her tenure with the Jaspers after spending the past three seasons as the top assistant at Division III Farleigh-Dickinson.

a strong recruiter, haddeland helped build a team that captured the eCaC Mid-atlantic Championship in 2010. her staff includes assistant coach Courtney Burhans who comes to riverdale after a season at stony Brook where she worked exclusively with the defensive players and goalkeepers.

In 2012, the change surrounding the Jaspers program will be visible by a “return to basics” for Coach haddeland. Veteran scorers and leaders will be relied upon to help the younger group compete on an every day basis while the team as a whole improves the fundamentals in pursuit of a MaaC Championship.

“we have such a raw group of kids that are all sponges and just absorbing a lot,” haddeland says. “If we can get them all on the same page by the time our games get going then I will be very happy with this year.”

goalkeePerthe loss of Julia DiBernardo between

the pipes places a strong burden on the shoulders of freshman Christina Fiorinelli who is the only goalkeeper on the roster. a former all-County performer at Massapequa high school on long Island, Fiorinelli has the strong fundamentals to make an immediate impact on the field.

“It’s a tough spot for her to be in,” says haddeland. “that’s a lot of pressure for a freshman but I think that her attitude will be what carries her this year.”

DeFensesenior captain Breana leonard returns

to lead a group of defensive veterans in 2012. leonard enters the year after finishing second on the team last season in ground balls (24) and caused turnovers (12) in helping Manhattan finish second in the MaaC in ground balls as a team.

“Breana is such a vocal leader and I love that about her,” haddeland notes. “I see her in practice taking that leadership role. sometimes you have to teach that, she does it naturally.”

Joining her will be juniors Maria aloe and amy Branchini. aloe played in 10 games in 2011, making 11 starts, while Branchini saw limited action in four contests as a sophomore.

the defensive unit will also see some youth tossed in to the mix as freshman alex rousseau looks to compete for playing time. rousseau has a knack for the defense earning honors in lacrosse along with playing goalie for wantagh high school on the soccer field.

“they have really been learning a lot and I think we are pushing their minds a bit more than they have been before,” says haddeland. “we have a couple of veteran players that are getting better each day in practice.”

miDFielDthe Jaspers will benefit from a talented

core of veteran players in the midfield. MaaC all-second team member elizabeth Dugan returns after leading all position players with 38 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers in 2011. Dugan started all 14 games last year notching 11 goals in her junior season.

Dugan, one of four captains, will be leading a group brimming with youth.


sophomores lauren Pribetich, Carly eskenazi, Kelsey rehain, and Clare Kerrisk look to improve after each saw playing time as rookies. rehain led the team last season in assists (7) while scoring more goals than any other freshman (11).

new to the team this season will be Brianna rickert who transferred in from wagner after receiving a medical redshirt in 2011. a former member of the new York state U-15 national team in 2005 & 2006, the sophomore will look to provide an immediate impact.

Freshmen duo Caitlyn hynes and Domenica o’Brey will also fight for opportunities in their rookie campaigns in the green and white.

“we have some kids who can run,” says the first year head coach. “there is a great base of freshman that we are really going to look to this season along with our veterans.”

attackanother strong veteran group returns

up top for the Jaspers as senior captains Brieanna spatarella and Chrissy gutenberger return for their final season in riverdale.

gutenberger, the active points and goals leader, led Manhattan with 33 goals and 29 points despite playing in only 11 games. a natural scorer, gutenberger enters the year with 128 career goals sitting 67 behind the program record of

195 set by lori graham (1997-01). sophomore Maria toscano comes

off a rookie season in which she started nine games notching eight goals and ten points. she will be joined by a group of four fresh faces to the program in freshmen Carly Cappello, Donna Jo Dinorcia, Kaleigh howe and samantha nardo.

Cappello will be no stranger to gaelic Park as her high school coach, and aunt, is former Manhattan coach Missi holland. Dinorcia was named part of the 2010 nJgIl all-First team and will be coming off aCl reconstruction surgery in april of 2011. howe and nardo were both all-league honorees in their senior seasons.

scheDulethe 2012 season will begin on Feb.

15 when the Jaspers travel out to long Island to take on stony Brook marking the second straight year Manhattan has begun their campaign against the seawolves. ten days later, the team will open its home slate when they host Bucknell at gaelic Park on Feb. 25. they will then go on the road for two straight contests visiting wagner College on Feb. 29 as well as long Island University on March 3 before returning home on the 4th to play Ivy league foe Brown.

the month of March will also feature the longest road trip for the Jaspers in the 2012 season when they travel to

Central Connecticut state University (3/7), saint Joseph’s University (3/14), Villanova (3/24) and then begin their Metro atlantic athletic Conference season at defending conference champion Canisius on March 31.

“a lot of the teams that we are playing are very good teams and it’s important to play games like that to see where you are as a team,” haddeland says.

the MaaC slate continues with a home game against Marist on april 4, before two more road matches with siena (4/7) and Fairfield (4/11), both of whom made the conference tournament last season. the Jaspers will end their season with two consecutive home games against niagara (4/14) and another 2011 MaaC tournament participant in Iona on april 18 at gaelic Park.

“I’m really excited about the season and the improvements within the program,” noted haddeland. “seeing each individual kid get better in their skills, that will be a successful first season for me.”

the MaaC tournament will take place april 27-29 at the Demske sports Complex on the campus of Canisius College in Buffalo, n.Y., with the top four teams making the playoffs.

Diane haddeland enters her first season as Jaspers’ head women’s lacrosse coach. haddeland had spent the previous three years as an assistant coach at Division III power Fairleigh Dickinson in Madison, nJ. a native of Mahopac, nY, haddeland brings experience in developing programs to compete on a national level.

haddeland recently finished her third season at Fairleigh Dickinson where she was the top assistant to adrienne Booth Carr. In her role, she helped with recruiting and worked with the goalies on the team. she was part of a staff, under Booth Carr, that helped take the Devils from a 1-13 record to a 13-7 overall mark in 2011 and the eCaC Mid atlantic

finals. In 2010, she helped guide Fairleigh Dickinson to an eCaC Mid atlantic Championship as well as being ranked as the second most improved Division III team in the nation by laxPower.

Prior to her time in Madison, she played four years (2005-08) of Division III women’s lacrosse at the College of new Jersey for Coach sharon Pfluger. her college resume includes three final four appearances and two national Championships in 2005 & 2006. she graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of science in health and exercise science before going on to achieve a Masters of sports administration from Fairleigh Dickinson in 2011.

the ability to mold a program did not begin in college either. haddeland attended Mahopac high school where she helped to start the girls lacrosse program and served as team captain her senior season. a passionate member of the lacrosse community, haddeland has spent the last three years working as a coach or director at multiple lacrosse schools and academies including the lacrosse academy at Fairleigh Dickinson, Morris storm lacrosse and working as a volunteer coach for the Mahopac lacrosse clinic since 2000.

courtney Burhans Assistant Coach • 1st season (Loyola, 2010)

Courtney Burhans enters her first season in riverdale as the assistant women’s lacrosse coach. Utilizing her rich Division I experience, she will work specifically with the goalies and defense.

Burhans comes to Manhattan after a season as the assistant coach at stony Brook University where she managed the goalkeeping and defensive players. In her one season in ronkonkoma, she helped groom the seawolves senior goalkeeper into a first-team all-america east player. It was the first such honor for a stony Brook goalie since 2008. her squad of goalies posted a 9.83 goals against

average (gaa) against conference opponents in the 2011 season.

a four year player at loyola University in Maryland, Burhans played goalie for the greyhounds from 2007-10 being named as a captain in both her junior and senior seasons. an emotional and motivational leader, she helped her squad advance to the BIg east Conference tournament for the first time since it joined the league in 2006 during her senior season of 2010.

Prior to her collegiate career, Burhans was a three time letterwinner at locust Valley Central high school in new York

where she served as the captain of both her lacrosse and volleyball teams. she was named all-Conference as a junior and senior.

a native of glen Cove, n.Y., Burhans is the daughter of Jeffrey and Deborah Burhans and has one younger brother, tyler, who is a freshman on the Marquette Men’s lacrosse team.

2011: started all 14 games of the 2011 season... scored 2 goals with 24 ground balls and 3 draw controls...caused 12 turnovers...picked up seven ground balls vs. wagner (3/2)...scored goals in games against sacred heart (3/5) and Iona (3/27).

2010: started all 16 games of the 2010 season... picked up a career-high 40 groundballs, six groundballs and caused 20 turnovers as one of the MaaC’s top defenders... recorded a season-high seven ground balls, caused four turnovers and added an assist vs. UC-Davis (3/8)... compiled four ground balls and caused two turnovers vs. Iona (4/1)... notched lone goal,

picked up two ground balls and created a pair of turnovers vs. siena (4/9).

2009: entered the scene to become one of the top defenders in the conference... named to the all-MaaC second team... collected 33 ground balls and her 22 caused turnovers ranked third on the team... had season high 5 ground balls vs. lafayette (3/4) and had 4 ground balls vs. siena (4/17)... caused a season high 6 turnovers vs. lafayette (3/4) and had 4 caused turnovers vs. siena (4/17)... had her first collegiate assist vs. niagara (4/3).

BeFore manhattan: was all County senior year in high school... named all County honorable mention, all tournament her junior year... all league selectee sophomore year... was also an all-Conference soccer player in high school.

Personal: Born May 2, 1990... majoring in elementary education... parents are Brian and Michele... has sister alyssa... was a peer aIDs educator in high school and also a service honor society member 10th-12th grade.

2011: another incredible season for leading scorer Chrissy gutenberger, with an impressive 33 goals and team high 39 points...finished the season ranked second all-time in goals (128) and third all-time in points (156)...started 8 of 11 games played she picked up 9 ground balls with 12 draw controls...54 of her 68 shots were on goal...reached the 100-goal plateau with a 5 goal effort against Central Connecticut (3/10)...scored in all but one game she played, had multi-goal efforts in nine of 11 games played...netted six goals in 19-8 win over long Island (3/23)...scored four goals in back-to-back games against siena (4/8) and Bucknell (4/12).

2010: one of the most prolific scorers in program history, she will enter her third season needing just five goals to join the illustrious 100-goal plateau... started 12 of the 14 games she appeared in during the 2010 campaign... named an all-MaaC second team member after registering a team-high 41 goals to go along with eight assists, 24 draw controls and 15 ground balls... finished the season

with 87 shots, including 73 on goal to lead the lady Jaspers attack... averaged 3.50 points per game and 2.93 goals per contest... compiled nine multi-goal games out of 14 played... recorded five goal efforts vs. sacred heart (2/21), lIU (4/13) and niagara (4/20)... scored four goals in four different contests: wagner (3/6), UC-Davis (3/8), siena (4/9) and Fairfield (4/18)... notched a season-high eight points (5g, 3a) while collecting 10 shots vs. lIU (4/13).

2009: Came on the scene and instantly became on of the top players in the region... was named the MaaC rookie of the Year and was named to the all-MaaC First team... was named MaaC rookie of the week three times during the season... led the MaaC with 4.33 points per game and was second in the conference in goals per game with 3.40 per contest... had team-leading 54 goals and team leading 14 assists for 68 points... scored 3 game-winning goals on the season... was third on the team in draw controls with 25... was second on the team in caused turnovers with 23... picked up

with 10 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro atlantic athletic Conference is in its 31st year of competition during the 2011-2012 academic year.

the MaaC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.s. Military academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with members competing in the sports of men’s cross country and men’s soccer. on January 2, 1982, army traveled to Iona for the first MaaC men’s basketball game and the MaaC story had begun.

today, Conference members include: Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, loyola University Maryland, Manhattan College, Marist College, niagara University, rider University, saint Peter’s College, and siena College. In addition, associate members include the University of Detroit Mercy, Jacksonville University and Virginia Military Institute in men’s lacrosse. st. Francis (n.Y.) College, Villanova University, VMI and wagner College are all associate members of the MaaC women’s water Polo league. Drake University, robert Morris University and sacred heart University compete in women’s rowing, while the University at albany, Boston University and the University of hartford began competition in women’s golf in the spring of 2010. the MaaC will support 24 sports and championships during the 2011-2012 academic year.

the MaaC Basketball Championships move to springfield’s MassMutual Center to host the 2012-2014 championships. By having an excellent working relationship with various facilities, the MaaC has been able to attract a number of nCaa Championship events. Most recently, the MaaC and rider co-hosted the 2011 nCaa Division I wrestling Championships at the wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. the MaaC, Canisius College and niagara University successfully hosted the 2010 nCaa Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First and second rounds at the hsBC arena in Buffalo, new York. all three parties hosted the event in 2004 and 2007. the MaaC and rider University co-hosted the 2009 nCaa Division I women’s Basketball Championship regional at the sovereign Bank arena in trenton, n.J., after recording the third highest attendance figure for the women’s championship with the First and second rounds in 2006. the MaaC and rider will work together to co-host the 2012 nCaa rowing Championships at Mercer lake in west windsor, new Jersey.

maac associate sPortsIn June of 1995, the MaaC continued to develop opportunities for student-

athletes as the conference announced the formation of the MaaC Men’s and women’s lacrosse leagues. the men’s league began competition in the spring of 1996, while the women’s league commenced in the spring of 1997. the men’s league consists of four MaaC schools -- Canisius, Manhattan, Marist, and siena – and three associate members – Detroit, Jacksonville and Virginia Military Institute. the women’s league consists of MaaC institutions Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, niagara and siena.

In 2002, the MaaC added the MaaC women’s water Polo league. the league is currently made up of three MaaC schools – Iona, Marist and siena – as well as four associate members, st. Francis (n.Y.), Villanova, VMI and wagner.

sacred heart started participating in MaaC women’s rowing in the spring of 2008. Drake University joined the league for the 2010 MaaC Championship, while robert Morris began competition in the spring of 2011.

In the summer of 2009, the MaaC added three associate members – albany, Boston University and hartford – to women’s golf, with the programs starting competition against MaaC members Fairfield, niagara and siena in 2009-2010.

acaDemics anD athletics

the MaaC prides itself on the accomplishments of its student-athletes in the classroom, as well as on the field. Mary Beth riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first recipient of the nCaa woman of the Year award. In the fall of 1998, erin whalen, a member of the Iona women’s rowing team, was awarded one of the nation’s 32 rhodes scholarships for academic achievement and civic leadership. Jose Vargas, a loyola student, was also awarded a rhodes scholarship in 1999.

First-class facilities are the rule with MaaC schools, as teams regularly play in top-notch arenas,

such as Madison square garden, the IZoD Center, hsBC arena, times Union Center, the arena at harbor Yard and the sun national Bank Center. the other MaaC championships boast their share of outstanding locales as well, such as the reverend harold ridley, s.J., athletic Complex at loyola, where the women’s soccer championship will be contested in the fall of 2011, and Joe Bruno stadium in troy, new York, home of the 2012 MaaC Baseball Championship. this year, the MaaC will take its men’s championship to orlando, Florida, where it will conduct its post-season event at the esPn wide world of sports Complex. the MaaC Men’s and women’s golf Championships will be held at Disney’s Magnolia golf Course.

In the past several years, a number of the MaaC schools have also enjoyed success in nCaa Championships. MaaC schools have made a total of 77 nIt appearances and 47 nCaa appearances. In addition, Iona and rider participated in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason tournament, with the gaels advancing to the championship game. the Manhattan women participated in the women’s Basketball Invitational, reaching the semifinal round of the tournament. the MaaC currently possesses 13 automatic bids to nCaa Championships in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and women’s water polo. In 2007, the Marist women’s basketball team advanced to the sweet 16 before falling to the eventual national Champion, the University of tennessee. In the fall of 2009, the no. 11 Iona men’s cross country team finished tied for eighth place at the nCaa Championship race, extended the gaels’ streak to eight straight top 10 national finishes. Iona softball, Manhattan track, Manhattan baseball and loyola lacrosse have also flourished on the national stage.

the MaaC has also been a leader in the forefront of technology, expanding the notoriety of the league into cyberspace. In 2007, the league reached an agreement with JumptV, Inc., now neulion, Inc., to design the MaaC web page. MaaCsports.com has been a great success, providing fans with up-to-date contest results, live and on-demand video and an online merchandise store. the MaaC, in conjunction with neulion, launched an iPhone app in February 2011. the league is looking to expand its offerings with android and iPod apps, scheduled for release during the 2011-12 academic year.

the MaaC President for the 2011-2012 academic year is rev. Jeffrey von arx, s.J., the President of Fairfield University. the Vice-President is Dr. eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., the President of saint Peter’s College. Jim Paquette, Director of athletics at loyola University Maryland, will chair the Committee on athletic administration, and theresa Berg, associate athletic Director/senior woman administrator at niagara University will serve as Vice Chair.

Dr. Brennan o’Donnell is the 19th president of Manhat-tan College, having assumed the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2009.

Dr. o’Donnell comes to Manhattan from Fordham Col-lege at rose hill, Fordham University’s oldest and larg-est school. as dean of Fordham College, he was the chief academic officer of a College of arts and sciences enrolling about 3,200 students under a faculty of more than 200.

Before coming to new York, Dr. o’Donnell spent 17 years at loyola College in Maryland (now loyola University Mary-land), where he served as a professor of english and, from 1999-2004, as director of the university-wide honors Pro-gram. an active scholar, his teaching and research interests focus mainly upon poetry, especially of the British romantic period, and on religion and literature, particularly contem-porary american Catholic writers. he has authored two books on the poetry of william wordsworth and co-edited the work of andre Dubus, a collection of essays published as a double issue of religion and the arts. In addition, Dr. o’Donnell has published articles, essays and reviews in some of the leading journals in his field. at Manhattan, he will continue to hold a faculty appointment, as he had at Fordham and loyola, as professor of english.

as the first president of the College not to be a member of the Brothers of the Christian schools, Dr. o’Donnell is treading new ground at Manhattan College. he has experi-ence in such transitions, however, as he was also the first layperson to serve as dean of Fordham College at rose hill.

his publications and lectures demonstrate a keen engage-ment in issues of faith and education, specifically Catholic higher education. From 1994–2000, he served as editor of the national magazine Conversations on Jesuit higher education, and he was a member of the national seminar on Jesuit higher education from 1993–2000. In addition, he has served as a board member for the lilly Fellows Program and for Collegium, a consortium of Catholic universities that strives to strengthen faculty understanding of and participa-tion in the mission of Catholic higher education.

a native of Pennsylvania’s wyoming Valley, Dr. o’Donnell earned his B.a. with highest distinction and honors in english at the Pennsylvania state University in 1981, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. he earned an M.a. and a Ph.D. at the University of north Carolina at Chapel hill in english and american literature and language. he is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, awards and honors.

Dr. o’Donnell is married to angela o’Donnell (formerly alaimo), a poet and writer who teaches at Fordham, where she serves as associate director of the Francis and ann Cur-ran Center for american Catholic studies. the couple has three sons: Charles (a graduate of saint John’s University, Minnesota, and a teacher in the st. Paul, Minnesota, public schools), Patrick (a 2009 graduate of Columbia Univer-sity, currently pursuing graduate studies in philosophy in leuven, Belgium), and will (a senior english major at Fordham).


a 1968 graduate of Manhattan College, Byrnes en-ters his 24th year as director of athletics.

since his arrival back to riverdale in May of 1988, Byrnes has presided over a renaissance period in Manhattan College athletics. During his tenure, the men’s and women’s basketball programs have earned eight nCaa tournament bids (four women, four men). additionally, the Jaspers have appeared in five postseason and preseason national Invitational tournaments (nIt). women’s soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse began competition at the Division I level under Byrnes, and 14 different teams have won conference championships-men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s outdoor track, men’s and women’s basket-ball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, volleyball, men’s tennis, softball and baseball. In addition, to date, 26 student-athletes have received all-america honors for both athletic and academic achievements.

Before returning to Manhattan, Byrnes spent 13 years with the Morrison-Knudsen Company, one of the largest engineering and construction firms in the nation.

a native of garrison, new York, Byrnes earned his undergraduate degree in physical education with a minor in biology. he also holds an M.B.a. from City University in seattle, washington.

as an undergraduate, Byrnes was a member of the Jaspers’ club football team. Byrnes served as team captain and played both defensive tackle and offensive

end. he spent one season as an assistant coach and helped guide Manhattan to a 6-2 overall record in 1969.

Upon graduation, Byrnes began a teaching and coaching career at Queen of Peace high school in north arlington, new Jersey. he also served as the school’s director of athletics from 1970-73. Under his leadership, Queen of Peace registered state tourna-ment appearances in baseball and basketball, while also capturing the Parochial “B” state Championship in football (1972).

In addition to his responsibilities at Manhattan, By-rnes served two stints (1997-99, 2004-06) as president of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball associa-tion, at one time the sponsoring body of the nIt. he also served on the nCaa Championship Committee in 1999-2000. he is currently the chair of the Metro atlantic athletic Conference (MaaC) Men’s Basketball Committee and the Committee on athletic admin-istration, as well as a member of the eCaC officials negotiating Committee. In recognition of his years of outstanding contributions to Jasper athletics, Byrnes was inducted into the Manhattan College athletic hall of Fame in 2004.

Byrnes resides in Croton-on-hudson, new York, along with his wife, rosemary. he is the father of five children: Bob, Carolyn (Manhattan ’97), Brian (Man-hattan ’99), Darren and Brigid.
